Bob Schaffer, running against Mark Udall in Colorado, has big Jack Abramoff problems -- and he's making them worse:
In a Denver Post profile, he pointed to the Marianas as a model for the kind of guest worker program he'd like to see adopted nationally to help fix our broken immigration system. That set the scribes to researching the 1999 trip, complete with travel arrangements handled by Abramoff's firm, free accommodations for Bob and his wife Maureen at a beach resort, meetings with Abramoff clients like the Saipan Garment Manufacturers' Association, and some lovely parasailing lessons. The textile factory owners told Bob that labor conditions were peachy keen and all the reports of workers imported from China and Bangladesh under false pretenses, housed in barracks surrounded by barbed wire, laboring 12 hours a day, seven days a week, desperately trying to make their quotas, were just a smear campaign cooked up by union bosses. And so Bob dutifully reported back. Mission accomplished.
Upon his return, as part of the House Resources Committee Schaffer turned oversight hearings into an attack on the Interior Department's Office of Insular Affairs, which was pushing for reform:
Schaffer was one of the key players in the hearing, grilling a young worker who had been called before the committee to talk about the desperate conditions faced by some laborers, suggesting instead that he was agitating in exchange for money and came to Washington to seek political asylum.
In addition to the Abramoff trip valued at $13,500, Schaffer also took $10,000 from factory owners and politicians in the Marianas. Probably just a big coincidence.
Campaign Money Watch is pushing for Schaffer to give that money to charities which benefit the people exploited in the Marianas. More here.

OT Should the Democrats end the War? Here is a quick poll you can take part in! From Democrats.com
What stevebos said in 1 and 2.
Must be pretty lively downstairs, it’s so quiet up here.
((((JANE!))))
FunnyDiva
The backstage folks are quick - they already fixed it…
No one could have anticipated… That takes too long to type. How about NOOCHA?
Will the domestic “model” for guest workers include the forced prostitution and forced abortion? Because those were really cool features of the Marianas “model.”
That they are, i was gonna mention the typo too…!
Udall appears to be leading by a bit- that would be a GREAT takeover in the fall.
I am sure that Schaffer was able to get a great view of all the stuff happening in the islands while paragliding along the coast.
Landrieu in La. holds a surprising lead- and Sununu looks to be in the Su doo doo.
Warner KICKING ASS in Virginia.
Dems should pick up two or three senate seats.
So Judeo-Christian.
OT- BBC has an article on facebook security problems.
FWIW, I disagree.
Dems should pick up 8 to 10 seats.
Abramoff…the gift that keeps on giving. I bet more of this stuff will show up as the down-ticket contributions by Abramoff and his firm are assessed. And given that I don’t think the FBI hass yet started revealing tgheir second round of Abramoff investigations yet (the ones from his “cooperating” interviews with the FBI) there are sure to be many “off-the-books” contributions to be made public. Unless of course the Bush Appointed US Attorneys decide to bury thesse. But that’s getting risky…as it sets them up for criminal prosecution once the Republicans are out of the WH.
IIRC, Al Franken’s Lying Liars book has a chapter on the the Mariana Islands and Saipan. Forced abortions were a topic as was Tom Delay’s instrumental efforts there, Delay’s blatent hypocrisy, Levi’s and other products with made in USA labels (made in Saipan sweatshops by Chinese, Philippinos and other brown people - Saipan is an American commonwealth like Puerto Rico). Delay was a big deal maker there with Jailbird Jack Abramoff.
8-10 would be running the table—would be great but not likely in my opinion- there are 10 gooper seats that are in at least a bit of danger- and 2 dem seats…
Still- it’s early and the tide seems to still be moving in a dem direction….
OT Interesting campaign in Indiana seems to be having divergent and unexpected effects.
Hillary partisans going after “defecting?” Super Delegates
This seems nonsensical IMO since it not only makes a sitting Congressman (who hasn’t even committed to Obama) not only pissed off…but also puts his seat at risk. It hurts the party, by making a legal supportive contribution to his campaign appear illegal.
And this is the consequence…A Major Indiana Super Delegate Defects
Can you imagine if this guy had to answer any pointed questions? I mean the type he has to answer under oath?
The GOP is defending 22 seats this year I believe it is. Even the most “secure” seats deep in red states aren’t all that damn secure. Landrieu is far and away the most (maybe only) vulnerable Dem seat.
Even folks like Box Turtle John Cornyn, Miss Mitch McConnell, and Inhofe can be taken out if things fall correctly.
Not only forced abortion, but female workers were compelled to have Devo-Provera inserted into their arms to temporarily sterilize them while they were there. And there were brothels established for the male contract workers.
From Law.com
Well it would be great if you are right. The other endangered Dem seat is SD.
FRom TPMuckraker:
GOP Rep. Arrested for Drunk Driving
From The Washington Post:
Rep. Vito J. Fossella (R-N.Y.) was arrested overnight in Alexandria and charged with driving while intoxicated, court records showed today.
Fossella is scheduled to appear in Alexandria General District Court on May 12 for an advisement hearing, the records said.
it’s better than that -
did you see Wolfson’s response to the reporter’s question’s about the defection to the Obama camp ?:
sure am glad they got rid of Penn /s
Why am I getting e=mails from John Cornyn? Can’t figure it out and I certainly don’t want them.
Are you a secret Republican? Maybe in a past life?
Do you now or have you ever owned a Box Turtle?
This on the first public figure - Diane Benson - to expose the extent of Don Young’s ties to Jack Abramoff.
I think in both SD and LA, the GOP wound up with their fourth or fifth string candidates. So Landrieu and Johnson are vulnerable but not really so vulnerable as a lot of the Rs.
In fact, IIRC from the WaPo0’s The Fix, Landrieu is sitting about number five or so and Johnson is not on the top ten list (where McConnell is 10)
afternoon driveby,Ot (sorry)
Dockworkers Protest Iraq War
Published: May 2, 2008
Thousands of dockworkers at West Coast ports stayed off the job on Thursday in what their union said was a call for an end to the war in Iraq.
The International Longshore and Warehouse Union said more than 25,000 members in 29 ports stayed off the job. The action came despite an order issued Wednesday by an arbitrator directing the union to tell its members to report for work as usual in response to a request from employers.
“Longshore workers are standing down on the job and standing up for America,” Bob McEllrath, the union’s president, said in a statement. “We’re supporting the troops and telling politicians in Washington that it’s time to end the war in Iraq.”
And, take a moment to read Dan Froomkin:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/.....01728.html
Today’s Froomkin:
Really the Clinton smears of Obama are dispicable. I agree with the Hoosier: Obama showed a ton of character by not backing the stupid gas tax when it would have been easy to do so. Tons of leadership.
AZMatt and JoFish
Never ever ever been a repub. and I never owned a box turtle. The e-mails just started appearing last week. Sorta makes me ill.
Yes I thought Landrieu would be in bigger trouble than she is- she’s currently running up four or so- but of course the campaigns haven’t really started yet. Johnson was only barely in trouble to begin with apparently so hopefully he can pull it off…
The “barely endangered goopers include Collins- who is way ahead at the moment, Smith (Oregon)- don’t know how he’s doing- Hegel’s opens seat in NE and Wicker’s in Ms.
Ms and Ne are damned tough for dems- I wouldn’t write em off- but TOUGH.
The other six endangered gooper states seems VERY good for dems-VA, Alaska, Colorado, New Hampshire and NM.
I figure dems should pick up half or more of those….
I think that Travis Childer’s near victory over Republican Greg Davis in Mississippi’s 1st Congressional District has really opened a lot of eyes.
Special Election Heading To Run-Off
This is a solid Red District in Ole Miss. The Republican’s have a solid machine and, although there was some opposition to Davis in the run-off he had the parties backing. But he only got 45% onf the vote! This in a District where the prior Republican Congressman and Bush got almost 70% of the vote in the last two elections.
I should point out as well that this wasn’t because there was an Obama-Clinton primary. In fact, turnout should have been depressed as it followed closely on the heels of the Primary. Clearly there is an energy in the Democrats in these areas that hasn’t been seen in decades. It’s a sense of the “possible”. And many of those that have changed Registration to Democrat are staying that way for down-ticket races, and many new registrants are coming out to vote even when they may have registered to primarily support a Presidential candidate.
Repugs should be quaking with fear!
And the cherry on top.
McCain Says Banner not Bush’s Fault
Yeah, it’s not like it wasn’t the most incredible Bushalicious photo op evah…
From the link:
“Both groups reportedly asked to meet with Schaffer, who declined.”
I love the understatement when a public figure “declines” to meet with a group.
This is what it really sounds like: “Fuck that! I’m not meeting with those assholes. They can go fuck themselves!”
Yeah—it’s shaping up to be another bad year for goopers- it’s a question of “bad” or “catastrophe”.
So it’s only left-wing nuts, like myself, who are displeased with Dems!
They always hold out for a cruise with lots of chicks and drinks, then
maybehell yeah!Congressionally, the 2008 wave election will make the 2006 wave election look like a ripple. People everywhere are fed up with GOPs, and the registration advantage built up during our “divisive” presidential primary will be very favorable down-ticket in November.
wag
they stopped the EFFFFFFING SHIP and turned it around so ya couldnt see shore, whosssssssssssssssssse told em too…i say the COMMANDER inCODPIECE
MN should be on your list as a possible pick-up
And TX, OK, and KY are not at all beyond the Dem reach
Much has changed…and much hasn’t. Bush promised the crew of the USS Abraham Lincoln that they wouldn’t be involved in further “major combat operations” in Iraq. I suspect that he may explain the combat operations they now embark upon as “I said Iraq, I never said anything about IRAN!”
Childers is extremely well-liked and they are running ads against him saying that he is endorsed by Obama.
My cousins think that is hilarious that anyone would think that Obama would even know who Childers is.
Childers is a friend of the cousins.
Did you guys see a linky recently with a citizen group confronting Waxman? I mean, people are pissed that he will not support impeachment! I’ll try to find it.
Blame Bill Clinton, McCain…it was clearly the Democrats who put up the “Mission Accomplished” banner for President Cod Piece!
Oops- yes Mn was on my list and I forgot to type it in.
The other three would be “bonus points”.
Heh.. o/t (sorry Jane) but worthy of note. Yet another failure of one of Beloved Glorious Leader’s “pet” programs:
You know a lot of other stuff was pushed through with this piece-of-crap legislation, just like with the “PATRIOT” act. One has to wonder if the real intent was getting all those other provisions (like mandatory access by recruiters to your kids personal information) not “Leaving Any Child Behind”.
No, actually one doesn’t wonder about that at all… one Sadly, Knows.
nope, missed that one.
here it is:
We Are Change
Unfortunately- Mn is leaning for Coleman at the moment- but that may very well change.
I want McCain to continue to repeat sentences that begin, “President Bush should not be held responsible….”
They are surefire winners for him in the fall. Please continue making excuses for Dear Leader, St Kept Flyboy. That’s what Americans want to hear.
Over and over.
I blame Jeremiah Wright. more fashionable.
i’m actually not very enthusiastic about Udall. He talks a good game, but esp’ly on war issues has been very much in hiding. But, he appears to be the dem candidate and i’ll vote for him.
it’s too bad because we’re one degree separated from him socially. I think he’s one of those guys who has just compromised a lot for power. All with good intent for later, just too easy to give up on any given issue. sigh …
McBush is really between a rock and a hard place with regard to his current presidential hero- notice that now he’s tryin ta say something BAD everytime he says somethin GOOD about him- and somethin GOOD everytime he says somethin bad.
The media is uninterested- but McBush has Huge and INTERESTING political problems- he is being forced to take both sides of every issue.
You know, it was rather a delicious moment when Jane repeated McCain’s 100 years quote to the Cindy Lookalike.
We’ve got Udalls all over the friggin place out west.
Thought I read recently that Al had closed the gap.
I will spare you all one more viewing of our county Dem caucuses of a few weeks back, but
once scarlet red Williamson County had over 800 attend - am tellin’ ya pups, couldn’t get 30 of them together for a union action two years ago
neighboring Bell County - home of Fort Hood went blue on 3/4 as well - congressional candidate outpolled current gooper congressman by 11,000 votes
Yee Haw!
Impeach 08!
Seems like a lot of “left-wing nuts” migrated down there after Katrina, probably those bleedin’ hearts who helped with the relief and reconstruction because our “boys” were busy “fightin’ ‘em over there, so they wouldn’t have to fight ‘em over here”.
But them “terrerist” sympathisers have now taken over. It’s a plot of course, they move into these areas for the election and to get “gay marriage” laws passed and then move into Alabama, next.
Best Emily Litella voice: I thought you said U-Hauls. Never Mind.
Down by eight in the latest Pollster.com poll averages.
interesting turn of phrase, to your point:
I assume you know that Gordon Smith, R-Oregon is a member of the Udall family?
If Smith wins in Oregon, Mark Udall wins in CO and the Udall wins in NM, would this be the first time 3 cousins served in the Senate together?
you dolls. *g*
Maybe he should resurrect his old line, “The only thing I care about is, how does it affect me, Al Franken?”
On second thought, maybe not.
I still think it’s funny, though.
yup, indeed.
Nancy Pelosi: Impeach Oh Wait!
Did you like it? I know it was a january meeting, but timeless!
Campaign commercial idea - all of Bush’s great photo ops then him hugging McCain.
Is TSF still here?
Are the ships bobbing around on the bay, gunwale to gunwale, as in Gold Rush days?
Ü
Does WaPo publish a ‘large type’ edition?
I’m getting Cornyn e-mail, too. Maybe because I’ve e-mailed him a few futile times regarding bills I liked or loathed. It would be the thrill of 2008 if Noriega could sink the box turtle.
OT, but nifty. Our oh-so-pious State Representative (R-Smugness) got a DWI.
http://www.statesman.com/blogs.....en_dr.html
Yeah, “maddening” even tho i think the controled demolition idea is the weak link of the theory.
That the dems put impeachment off the table for presidential asprirations is unconscionable. I full support impeachment of the next unitary executive.
depends on what the meaning of “should” is — halfhearted *g*
Marking a gloomy day hereabouts. EPU-ed a comment at the end of LHP’s thread, today a soldier’s remains return home to ND from the Korean War. It just gets you right in the gut…how many more families, how many more lives, how many more years to feed the egos of those who will not acknowledge their corruption–in the Marianas, in Iraq, in the WH.
Lost track of which spring, but I wrote a comment here at FDL pre this format about seeing a procession escorting the remains of a Iraq casualty home. If anybody can guide me back to that with a link, would really appreciate.

Thanks for the linky. I was going to comment on the great photos and like the one you picked!
Good job longshoremen!
Interesting. Wasn’t it Hillary who trashed Senator Brooke in her commencement address at Wellesley?
Oh yeah, and the tapdancing. Always a nice touch to tapdance when someone’s lost their job and can’t afford food or gas.
When Hillary was graduating, I mean. (My retired neighbor was a few years ahead of her and most of the alumnae still don’t forgive her for that.)
You mean the Senator that defended commies but wants to know what Obama was doing hangin with old weather people. . .that one?
Bestest Fifth Anniverary (Wood) Present for our Preznit:
Articles of Impeachment engraved cedar plank.
Yup.
The only reason they are now saying the banner is a bad idea is because they don’t like being laughed at. And BTFW, Dana Perino, the “President” says it was the end of major combat operations in the first part of his speech. Hello? He was not waxing all democratic freedom because of one ship. Jeez what a twit.
The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th Friedman Unit.
Time to end the war.
Like it matter what that bow-head says.
I remember that comment - you had me cryin’
believe it was 06 - see what I can find
I’d laugh at your comment if it weren’t so: 1) true and 2) depressing.
Pretty sure your soldier returning home was spring one year ago.
Waxman is quite a piece of work. In his opinion ‘Impeachment’ is off the table’ because the Republicans won’t vote for it.
Does Mr. Waxman not consider the possibility that Impeachment has an educational component, and that sheer self-interest/self-preservation might just affect even Republicans? How about Democrats. Whom do they ALL work for? Perhaps they all have forgotten?
General question:Is Waxman a lesser weevil or just a little weevil?
Watch the video dosido remarked upon @54 before answering, please …
1,829 DAYZ AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND…
Citizen Hamsher and the Firepup Freedom Fighters:
I jest got up all depressed about this 5th anniversary of the nightmare in Iraq and our Congress when I saw the news flash that the “DC Madam” had been found dead of “an apparent suicide”. Now, does anyone else see the entire corrupt machine of Enron to the stock market scandal to the war profiteering thru the Abramoff syndicate comin’ apart here in the garage of a DC whorehouse manager?
I gotta believe that our secret police and intelligence apparatus have been given the mission to stop the bleedin’ and get rid of the bodies before a new administration comes in with a real Attorney General and special prosecutors.
Tell me why I’m wrong and I’ll go quietly back ta sleep…shit, this is gettin’ ta be like sumpthin’ out of a bad Sartre play!!
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNITION BEFORE THE DOTS GET CONNECTED RIGHT AROUND OUR NECKS!!

Requiem At Twilight
Let’s not forget that at this point in the ‘06 Mid-Terms, the Goopers were Seriously Talking about George Allen being Groomed for President.
IIRC, we ‘flipped’ six Senate Seats - which wasn’t even really considered possible going into the Election - to get the Majority last time.
What We want this time is a Super-Majority - 60 Solid, Honorable Seats - Without Counting Joe Traitor.
It’s Likely two Supreme Picks hang in the balance, so let’s Take the Prize!
Will a Net +10 Senate Wins give US 60 Seats?
It does seem a rather ‘convenient’ demise.
One suspects there might well be several of those, if truth be told …
Thanks, cbl2 and eg. Much appreciated.
Looks as if Hillary is going to win Indiana by eight or so- and Obama will have a bigger victory margin in North Carolina…Where does that put us?
