Gomorrah, a book about the Italian Mafia, describes how they dump toxic waste all over southern Italy. They contaminate soil and water. The crazy part is the Mafia bosses live there and suffer the ill effects of the process. The asbestos industry installed asbestos throughout the society long after it knew asbestos presented a health hazard. The asbestos chiefs damaged themselves along with everyone else, but it seemed a fair trade since it bought them country club memberships and McMansions. The problem is systemic and won’t be cured until we understand the reason behind our desire for inequality and hierarchy. Sadly, have to disagree about scale issue. At this time, there is a much more cost-effectiveness in terms of KWH per ton steel / KWH per dollar / etc with large, industrial wind. Rooftop / localized / distributed has (real) value, but we shouldn’t simply ignore those differences. (And, if you think that NIMBY goes away with small-scale, you don’t live in neighborhoods like where I’ve tried to make it happen.)

Finally, while I would love Mag-Wind to work as well as claimed, I have only seen the claims to date. On this, I’m from Missouri: “show me”.

I sat his ass in 1st class, and had to go pee myself at ATL before takeoff. When I came back to our seats, he had this big grin and a large cup of coffee he’d obviously asked the flight attendant for.

I thought “man I am so fucking screwed.”

I can just imagine, and I have to say that I’m glad not to have had that PARTICULAR experience …

For me the hardest deal was to tell my father that he couldn’t drive anymore, even though my mother assured me that SHE would tell him what to do …

He dearly loved his cars and was an ace driver …

He was always gracious when I was young and wanted to drive one of his cars, he didn’t bat an eyelash when I got a Triumph 500 at the age of fourteen, just said he liked bikes and that I should be careful and never, ever tell my mother.

He was in WWII, an engineer assigned to Patton, he was a forward scout and determined where the pontoon bridges should be placed to get the tanks across …

He was also one of my best friends.

Man, when I flew my Pop here from Florida last last May — you ain’t lived till you flown a 91 yr old WWII amputee disabled vet with dementia on Delta from MLB to LAS via ATL — he asked me the same half-dozen questions over & over for 11 hours.

And then, of course, he “gotta PEE” bad halfway to Vegas outa ATL.

My father thought that I was his brother occassionaly (well, pretty often) but I went along with it and when I took him out for drives, when we still could do that, because I placed him in a ‘home’ near where he grew up, I actually got to re-live some of his youth with him. It was a privilege I cherish. I’m pretty lucky, all in all …
