My six-year old son is addicted to the Berenstein Bears. One of his first
successfully read books: Ready, Get Set, Go which teaches adjectives and suggests that no one is best at everything. How many times read between us? 10? 25? Maybe 50? As any parent can tell you, a favored book like that becomes imprinted in your brain.
"Good, Better, Best ..." is the tag line in Ready, Get Set, Go. Well, in the past few days, we've seen an example of this in reverse, something more from the film world. When it comes to politics and energy, we've had a display of Dumb, Dumber, Dumbest.
Clinton, McCain, Bush.
Energy Dumb. Energy Dumber, Energy Dumbest.
Energy Dumb ..
As has been getting much play, Hillary has hopped aboard the McCain wagon for a temporary lifting of the gas tax.
Hillary Clinton yesterday criticized Barack Obama for opposing the concept of suspending the gas tax ..a plan both she and John McCain have endorsed.
My opponent, Sen. Obama, opposes giving consumers a break, I understand the American people need some relief."
The idiocy of the moratorium, how it will be counterproductive
on virtually every single reasonable measure other than crass tactical politics, has been laid out by many others and doesn't need to be laid here other than to emphasize that this is simply ENERGY DUMB! Even with taking the money from oil company profits in windfall profits, any reduction in gasoline prices simply will foster more use of gasoline in the economy in the face of Peak Oil and Global Warming. And, at the end of the day, this could actually lead to increased gasoline prices due to even more strain on supply. (And, by the way, what happens come September, two months before the election?)
What we require on energy is leadership and paths toward a better tomorrow. I've praised Presidential candidate Clinton's energy plan, which has many strong points that should become part of the next Administration's energy policy. This pandering to near-term concerns over gas prices and the attacks on Presidential candidate Obama do that plan a serious disservice.
What is particularly sad is that Hillary Clinton, circa 2000, understood exactly how dumb this type of idea really is. As Senate Candidate Clinton said:
Clinton, meanwhile, lashed out at [the] plan to repeal 4.3 cents of the gas tax, calling it "a bad deal for New York and a potential bonanza for the oil companies ...
"[O]ne of my fundamental disagreements during this campaign with my opponent was when he called for the repeal of the gas tax. Now, the gas tax is one of those few taxes that New York actually gets more money from Washington than we send. And we are totally reliant on it to do things like finishing I-86 in the Southern Tier, or the fast- ferry harbor works up in Rochester, as well as the work we need to do here in the city. So you can count on me to support infrastructure."
Yes, I am aware that Hillary Clinton has proposed taxing oil companies to make up for the missing tax revenue. Hmmm ... and any thoughts as to whether the companies would simply pass that additional cost along to their customers? Or, that Congress is unlikely to pass such a tax and George wouldn't sign it?
Maybe, on this issue, Energy Dumb Presidential Candidate Hillary Clinton should be listening to Energy Smart Senate Candidate Hillary Clinton.
Energy Dumber ...
John McCain's has been known to
talk some serious talk when it comes to energy and Global Warming issues. As to why there hasn't been progress on global warming,
Special interests. It’s the special interests. It’s the utility companies and the petroleum companies and other special interests. They’re the ones that have blocked progress in the congress of the United States and the administration. That’s a little straight talk.
When it comes to action, however, Senator McFlip's Straight Talk Express turns to Senator McFlop's Dirty Energy Twisted Action Delay Machine. When given the opportunity to fund renewable energy, multiple times, via funds from the five largest oil companies, Senator McCain was absent. Oh, by the way, the votes: 59 to 40 to 1 (McCain). Being there and voting for the measures would have placed $billions into renewable energy. So much for McFlip's assertion that "We need to do green technologies."
So, what about Energy Dumber?
John McCain is the originator of this discussion of a potential gas tax moratorium, to this pandering to near-term concerns over longer term requirements. Unlike Ms Energy Dumb, Mr Energy Dumber wouldn't worry about the costs: no path to make up for the lost revenue to the highway fund.
Another chip in America's crumbling infrastructure?
Energy Dumbest ...
The Bush-Cheney energy policies have been a disaster for the nation, for the globe, for the future. Fact.
Mr Energy Dumbest held
a press conference yesterday which competed with his recent Global Warming speech for reckless truthiness. As AP reported,
President Bush put politics ahead of the facts Tuesday as he sought to blame Congress for high energy prices
"Politics ahead of the facts". From George W. Bush? Well, I never ...
Americans are concerned about energy prices, and I can understand why. I think the last time I visited with you it was like -- I said it was like a tax increase on the working people. The past 18 months, gas prices have gone up by $1.40 per gallon. Electricity prices for small business and families are rising, as well.
Oh, yes, how much during your Presidency? Over $2.50 in increased gasoline prices. Who is responsible for this?
I've repeatedly submitted proposals to help address these problems. Yet time after time, Congress chose to block them.
Those nasty Congress-Critters. Keeping George from helping the poor working Joe (and Josephine ...).
Congress has blocked drilling in ANWR. Congress has blocked new refineries. Congress has blocked "clean, safe nuclear power."
What is George's solution to our problems? Pumping ANWR.
if Congress is truly interested in solving the problem, they can send the right signal by saying we're going to explore for oil and gas in the U.S. territories, starting with ANWR.
Unrestricted construction of refineries.
I proposed, you might remember, taking some
abandoned military bases and providing regulatory relief so we can build new refineries. I mean, if we're generally interested in moving forward with an energy policy that sends a signal to the world that we're not -- we're going to try to become less reliant upon foreign oil, we can explore at home,
Biofuels to worsen the competition between food and fuel. (Should we put pictures of starving children at ethanol pumps?)
as well as continue on with an alternative fuels program.
Nuclear power plants ...
As electricity prices rise, Congress continues to block provisions needed to increase domestic electricity production by expanding the use of clean, safe nuclear power.
Note to honesty: Congress already has enacted many measures to enable more nuclear power plants, George. And, these new plants won't be on line for many years and are unlikely to contribute to lower electricity costs (even if they reduce carbon emissions).
As policy to deal with our real requirements, topping Energy Dumb and Energy Dumber, showing himself (yet again) to be Energy Dumbest.
Nothing here about Negagallons (demand destruction). No mention of Peak Oil. No mention of the relationship of energy use and global warming. No mention of meaningful policies to deal with the fact, according to George's own words, that America is "addicted to oil." (And, as evidently George the alcoholic well knows, the best way to deal with addiction is by focusing on getting more product.)
Energy Dumb. Energy Dumber. Energy Dumbest.
Unlike the Berenstein Bears: Ready, Get Set, Go, Dumb, Dumber, Dumbest doesn't switch positions with as much ease. Sort of like Papa Bear, who couldn't beat his kids at anything (until exhausted sleep), Hillary ain't going to come close to outdumbing McSame McCain and Bush on her worst days. McSame McCain has to work hard to outdumb Bush, but he does make it a race to the finish in too many arenas.Good, Better, Best ...
It really is sad that we need to be talking about Energy Dumb, Dumber, and Dumbest. When it comes to energy and global warming issues, we had actually seen strengthening of Presidential candidate positions through 2007 and into 2008. And, both Obama and Clinton have reasonably good energy programs in their campaign positions. But, in the face of Global Warming, good isn't enough. We must be working hard to make the plans and coming programs better, because the perfect storm of Peak Oil and Global Warming will require the best for navigating the nation and the world community to a prosperous and climate-friendly future.
Sigh ... we can't afford to be talking dumb, dumber, dumbest when so much rides on moving from good to better and striving for best.
When it comes to the Oval Office, next January won't be too soon for some Energy Smarts.

The Oil Companies had also testified they didn’t want or need new refineries!
hey there, A
Time for Energy Smarts, that’s for sure.
We need some takebacks after the past eight years. Need to tell BigOil the party’s over. Get ready to get nationalized, or at least start paying some serious windfall profits taxes.
We should be striving for Smart, Smarter, Smartest …
Instead, this week was Dumb, Dumber, Dumbest …
Hillary has been pilloried but the media seems to have excused McCain his idiocy and George’s display received minimal attention …
corporate, corporate corporatist?
I’d use Berenstein Bears as readers in primary grades over anything we’ve been offered in 10 years. These stories have lots to them. Morals, rhyming, fun, phonics…all of it. But Bush determined to make kid hate school, and all of the texts are fer crap. He and the permanent republican majority people want an uneducated, compliant, and Fox news watching and believing citizenry.
Remember the old days when he was just worse than Nixon?
Bernstein Bears are a tad sexist. Mom and Sis don’t ever get to actually do anything important or interesting.
Are the lady bears lazy bears?
Just passive.
I gave ya a belated H/T in the comments for the ‘gift’, ES! ;-)
Another excellent post, A Siegel …
President Obama will, hopefully, recognize that the environment and our specie’s relationship to it, especially as regards the effect of ‘energy’, its sources, and its efficient usage and the production of food are THE central issues facing humanity; and therefore, base his fundamental policies on those issues AND human justice, generally.
It’s been a while since I was reading BB, but that’s now the way I remember them.
Baking is important.
And I remember mom being kind and thoughtful. Also important.
But, as I said, it’s been a while.
It’s been a while since I was reading BB, but that’s
nownot the way I remember them. For years the oil depletion allowance has been a license to steal. If it takes, say, a million dollars to develop a well, the oil companies continue deducting the depletion allowance till the well runs dry, maybe two hundred million dollars later. It would be reasonable to cap the depletion allowance at the cost of the well, much like depreciation stops at the cost of the building.
The oil companies know how to work their way around Congress and no doubt will continue to do so. Perhaps an overwhelming Democratic victory this November will change things, but it is unlikely.
I forgot all about it! Thanks, CT.
Ummmm, not sure how to say this….but….is John McCain grabbing Georgie’s lemon drops in the picture above? LOL! Oh boy.
What are we going to do about the biggest scam evah - corn/sugar based ethanol? Short of calling in the ELF to take on the ethanol refineries I don’t know where to start. How do we convince the public, and the farmers in particular, that this is a really bad idea? I understand farmers are getting top dollar (that ain’t sayin’ much) so how do we wean them off selling to the refiners?
That, clearly, requires a certain form of ‘fortitude’ …
Better than my ‘Pet Goat’? Speaking of which, did ya’ll see that the Southern Methodists overwhelmingly rejected Shrub’s Prez Liebary at SMU…? Bwhahahaha…!
Bush is an oil promoter: ‘If you drill, it will come.’
He never takes into account the dry wells or the time it takes to do the drilling or get the oil into and out of refineries.
That’s not his job. His job is to get wealthy investors to hand over lots of money in return for a promise of a share in the profits … which are unlikely to arrive, ever.
(If you said to him, here’s a field that can produce X barrels a day, and it contains Y barrels of oil, he probably couldn’t figure out how long the oil would last - but I’d bet that he could tell you exactly how much those Y barrels would be worth at Z dollars per barrel.)
Active lady bears
Good point. He has none. Must be a “mistake”. ;-)
Thank you, ES! ;-)
Perhaps he’s an ‘artful’ codger …
Off Topic, but, in case you missed it …
U.S. Importing 6,700 Tons of Radioactive Sand From Kuwait
http://www.tdn.com/articles/20.....559743.txt
everything about Georgie is lemony.
I like Obama’s response to the ‘Gas Tax Holiday’… It’ll get ya a half tank of gas…! ;-)
The F*ckers know the hazards of DU and are burying the facts and the evidence… It’s a sore subject with me, since I’ve been around it and they’re denying/covering up the use of it here on my Isle…!
serves us right, eh?
hell.
Which specific ‘F*ckers’ are you referring to, CTut?
and it sure beats getting your scarce and only water out of barrels that are radioactive.
http://www.commondreams.org/he.....624-09.htm
but then again, the admin and FDA and the EPA don’t give a poo ’bout anything.
Mission Accomplished.
This Maladministration… and EPA…!
Woo Hoo.
Here’s the link to the Methodist’s Say No to Bush Library:

This rejection overwhelmingly passed 844-20.
Well, their motto is Open Hearts, Open Minds, Open Doors.
Just not an open door to George and Karl.
Oops, sorry I didn’t provide a linky…! ;-)
Clinton’s promotion of a gas tax holiday is bad economics. Hopefully, it is also bad politics.
Ah, that portion of the usual suspects, but I wonder just whom it is, which ‘experts’ or ‘contractors’ are actually doing the moving. Would the military be involved in any fashion?
ECON 101: Prices are a function of supply and demand ONLY. Specically, they are not a function of tax rate; if you decrease the tax rate, the prices stay the same, the oil companies make more profit, and the road and bridges don’t get maintained. In short, Clinton and McCain are FULL OF SHIT! They are ignorant of the most fundamental notions of economics or they are shills for the oil companies. Not the folks anyone in their right mind wants running our government.
Jumping on any McCain idea is really, really bad politics.
Hopefully, people will see through this, with Obama’s help: it’ll get you a half-tank of gas at best, and Big Oil will raise prices to meet any new demand created by the holiday.
May have been mentioned on an earlier thread, Obama’s on Meet the Press Sunday and their website invites questions. As I noted at my homeblog, this is a good opportunity to let Russet know what questions we have, how repellent we find the guilt-by-association media drumbeat right now.
Not in regards to the movement of the sand to Idaho, but, the military transports DU ammo daily, globally, and expends it globally… They originally denied ever using it here on the Big Isle, then, after being refuted, the EPA came in and issued a highly dubious report saying that only negligible traces are present…! F*ckers…!
Thanks for this great post, A.
Dugg
Clearly McCain admits to some economic ‘deficiency’, but what might HRC’s excuse be?
Other than blantant pandering to the perceived ignorance of the ‘people’?
Rather insulting, it is, actually …
MAGIC NUMBER: per TPM: “The Obama camp says he’s 283 overall delegates from winning the nomination.” And, of course, Hillary is 130 more away. And as those gaps shrink at nearly equal rates, she’ll stay 130 votes away. The arithmetic — it ain’t math — is relentless.
I can cut McCain no slack for his ignorance, of which he seems actually proud.
Do you suppose the military personnel, as individuals, understand what they are about? Or that they are adequately, ahem, ‘protected’?
President Obama certainly would wish to deal with these goings on, don’t you think?
Oh I wouldn’t suggest cutting HIM slack, just pondering his more-compatible opponent’s ‘reasoning’…
There’s no relief in sight, until and unless we actually get serious about how we get and use our energy.
It’s sort of like this: we each have our won bodies and our own organs and any one can fail at anytime, no matter our good intentions and use of same.
It’s called prevention, preservation and care. Eventually (unless you are the undead as some in this admin seem to be) something gives up, out or fails completely. We are finite and so are the fuels we rely on to keep all of our stuff going.
We need to find another way to sustain life as “we know it” and it is not fossil fuel at an enormous environmental, humanitarian and political cost.
We are being held at the mercy of corporatists who are making money at the expense of the desperate.
“the world’s greatest superpower” indeed.
Actually, yes … “traditional” roles. Although, Sister plays baseball, etc … And, the morality is quite direct. The BBs are not (by any means) the only books around, but they are favorites. And, don’t want to be stopping a 6-year old from reading …
wonownahem.
Clinton’s promotion of a gas tax holiday is bad economics. Hopefully, it is also bad politics.
it’s DooDoo economics.
No worries.
I know how to google.
And, I’m not saying the Methodists are perfect. Far from it. I’m one.
I fear that they may fracture, again, over the Gay Issue.
There’s just too many in the South who Don’t Get That Part about Love. :(
Good luck with that. *g*
I have never seen any evidence that Russert is in any way influenced by questions submitted on the website. It interferes with his prime directive: Dick Cheney controls Tim Russert.
As revealed in sworn testimony in federal court.
ROFLMAO since part of that was a nickname from waaaaaaaaaaaay back.
(nothing offal, just ’cause)
can do.
Interestingly, I didn’t receive any briefing or training as to the hazards of DU ammo until ‘98 long after the proof had started to percolate within the Pentagon and the VA is still fighting claims based on DU exposure…!
IMHO, both McCain and Clinton are “pandering” to the the American voters, whom they consider to be “rubes.” They think that the voters will buy the notion that, if the government cuts taxes by so much, then gas prices will come down by that amount. The public has been through this shit too mcuh. IMHO, a counter-attack by Obama would be very effective. Instead, he is laying back and, god bless him, Bloomberg is carrying the ball: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/.....99698.html
I did like this response from them…
I wish I could supply a funny, understanding response, but I’m mostly outraged that we are all treated in such a cavalier fashion CTut and I sincerely hope you suffer no ill consequence …
Sadly, Ethanol — as bad as it is — is not “the worst scam ever”. Scary to contemplate, no?
Now, I think skyrocketing food prices are taking a little off the shine of ethanol. And, there are more studies/discussion of the very questionable global warming benefits of ethanol.
I totally and completely agree.
Where and when did you serve, CTuttle.
(if I may be so bold as to ask)
Sadly, media is focusing on criticism of Clinton, and Energy Dumber McSame McCain is getting very little of the discussion, almost footnoted.
His policies are no different that Boosh’s, “my friends”.
Not one iota.
Why is this not getting any traction at all?
I’ve not suffered from any ailments personally, but, I know individuals who have and have fought the VA… It’s still being litigated in court about the usage here on the Big Isle…
Bloomberg really is strong on this, you’re right.
Clinton (and, to lesser extent, Energy Dumber McSame McCain) are being heartedly criticized for the gas tax moratorium idiocy. No expert is supportive. What is impressive is how Bush’s idiocies simply disappeared off the radar map. Is this a sign of Shrub’s imminent irrelevancy?
Many commercial airliners in the U.S. have ~1250 lbs. of DU in the wingtips …
Maybe Dubya needs someone to read “The Long Emergency” to him? I’m halfway through it … scary! (Takes a while for Amazon shipments to get to the land of oz!) Just happened to think: it was 1953 when Admiral Rickover wrote “Education and Freedom” and predicted ‘the oil will be gone in a hundred years’.
One thing about nuclear plants: mining the uranium, transporting it, and processing it, is hellish expensive — plus the oil price of actually building a new reactor.
How ‘wise’ to the media do you think the ‘public’ to actually be A.?
Any speculation?
I think they are learning, but the curve needs to be steeper …
A bit more ‘reality’ and I think they’ll ‘get’ it.
what would Husker DU?
I drive a compact car. Today I paid $36.94 for a tank of gas. I believe that is the most I have ever paid with this car (I know many people are paying much more to fill their tanks).
I would rather have a portion of that payment be comprised of a tax to support our transportation infrastructure than have it go straight into the pockets of an oil company that would feel no compunction to lower the total price per gallon.
plant more corn.
You get no argument from me on this. But having read Peter Drier’s commentary over at HuffPo, methinks we need to make some strong presence against the likely barrage of smear-by-association “questions” from the Clintonistas.
Why, why, why, ah was just overwhelmed with people wantin’ me to ask about Revvvvvvvrund Wright and did you know Obama and Ayers once rode in an elevator together….
Wrote about this at my place because it’s starting to seem like dominoes…Carl Bernstein’s references to Clinton campaign tactics, and the Joe Andrews announcement, and then reading Drier…it’s like the tap’s been opened and the contaminated water’s starting to flush thru the faucet.
Shrub has always been irrelevant. Cheney is the puppet master. Bush wouldn’t understand an energy policy if you did it in crayon.
aw, shrub wants his own hoover institute. or condi wants her own personal think tank.
Thank you. Compliments always taken. Sometimes even graciously. :-)
Now, as for Obama, his energy plan is reasonable and might even rate ‘good’ (weaknesses include “clean coal”, for example) and he has some top-notch people advising him re energy. But, ‘good’ isn’t good enough for the challenges we face. Obama has shown a willingness/ability to learn and his energy positions are getting better in many ways. (He often forcefully speaks to the need for 100% auction for any cap program, for example. Not a position he held a year ago.) We need to help him move from reasonably good, to better, and help him strive for best …
that’s what Karen Silk would have said.
Heh, I served from ‘85 to ‘05, and, I’ve helped build part of the Border Wall near Tecate, CA and blown up log cribs in Deep Woods, ME, I did tours of duty in both Korea and Germany… And I was stationed in various stateside posts…! I was fortunate enough to not have fired a weapon in anger, tho…!
Gas in Sierra Leone is $18.42/gallon …
It is my firm hope that Obama is educable … we don’t have much else going for us …
Which (even more so) makes it really, really bad politics.
Why join up with the presumptive GOP candidate on anything, particularly something this panderish? What’s her general election campaign gonna be, “oh me too, John, me too — great idea you have!” And by making the contrast between her McCainish policy and Obama’s, she insulates McCain from criticism, since the media is focused on the Dem horse race.
It’s as if her political instincts aren’t working. It’s really odd. It puzzles me.
Me too …
Although, I would prefer even more tax that would be used to foster a move toward a cleaner energy future.
The 0.0143% Solution.
blessings to you and thank you.
(I’m grateful that you never had to fire a weapon in anger– I’ve known many who did and have never forgotten /forget)
I have heard that he was once an advocate for Nuclear power, tho…!
Here in ethanol country *g*, the argument is made that corn-based ethanol is merely the first step toward cellulose-based {?} ethanol, using such products as switchgrass. But we’ll never get to that if we don’t start with the more readily achievable. From a pragmatic standpoint, growing corn is hard on the land, so farmers/producers would be in the vanguard of wanting the most effective crops.
Big Oil has a vested interest in demonizing ethanol, just as the timber industry had a vested interest in demonizing hemp that had nothing to do with its supposed drugginess.
Evening, Bobby, hope everyone reads this.
Hey, punaise, you’re sublime this eve.
YUP. NO on telecom immunity, for the love of banana cupcakes. (I’d give a banana cupcake hat tip, I believe to KayinMaine, but not sure…)
Well, I was bein’ a little dramatic.
Many of my friends have seen the horrors, I was fortunate under Pappy in GW1 they tasked me to train up units, and, my retirement papers precluded my deployment under Dubya’s fiasco…!
Hi. Thanks.
Just got back from the nursing home. Sippin’ the Shiraz at the moment.
I see biofuels as a part of the solution path, but a part that requires very careful pursuit. Sprouting ethanol plants and moving from other crops into corn to fuel McSUVs in very questionable EROEI (energy return on energy invested) and CO2RFEI (CO2 Reduction For Energy Invested) at reasonable high cost (including rippling impact on food supplies globally) is not that ‘careful pursuit’.
There are other ways to pump up the corn belt financially with a greater impact on CO2 emissions. See the discussions / work at Stranded Wind. We will, I hope, have some serious announcements in the next several months.
why, thanks
Tecate’s in Mexico, no? Is there a Tecate, CA?
Nice discussion, well put together. You might be interested in eliminating coal from the electricity equation …
I think that if we could get the government to subsidize solar installations for every home it would have many rewards for all. Just in the area of jobs alone, we could put many people back to work with good jobs, help the environment and most of all it would help the regular people with their high home energy costs. Dam what a concept!
Teddy, I am so pissed at Hillary, I can’t …..
All I remember was the Brewery…! ;-)
There’s a glitch in your link
How’s your mom doing?
I visited my dad in one of them for the two years before he passed this last summer.
It wasn’t always that great. :(
But, I’d give a lot to go there again right now to see him.
How about not a single point solution?
But, building energy efficiency (execute Architecture 2030), electrify transport, distributed power generation (of all sorts), etc … Not ‘just’ solar on rooftops.
