Statehood was a big deal to us. And we were even taught a relatively accurate version of Hawaiian history. Some of the nastier elements of the coup d’etat were glossed (the looting of I’olani Palace, some of the Kiplingesque attitudes of the planters weren’t given much play, for example), but all-in-all we got a more accurate version of our State’s history than California or Texas students get of their State’s histories.</p> <p>But perhaps attitudes have changed since I left. I attended HS in California and have only been back for vacations.
