FT: Can we move on to Iran at this point, just sticking with the Middle East? I mean, Iran clearly on the way to developing its nuclear capability. In broad terms, what should the policy response be? Is your broad inclination now that the next step should be to toughen sanctions, or do you think that the emphasis should be more on finding some kind of other diplomatic solutions which bring Iran into a deeper conversation with the West?
DM: Well, I think that’s a false choice, would be my instinct on that. Iran has every right to be a secure, rich country. It doesn’t have the right to set off a nuclear arms race in the Middle East, and it doesn’t have the right to undermine the stability of its neighbours. And that’s why I think the E3 plus three approach, and you can choose your own metaphor, but it makes a very clear offer to the Iranians with big gains for them, as well as having sanctions if they defy the international community.
And I think that part of the answer to one of the first questions I was asked, which was the nature of our alliances, those are multilateral alliances that we take very, very seriously, and that I take very, very seriously. FT: However, Iran has, despite the fact that the sanctions have been agreed, despite that the US and EU are united with Russia, despite the fact that the Iranian economy is hurting, Iran is continuing with this programme. And people expect at some point this year, it will have 3,000 centrifuges. ElBaradei said this on a number of occasions, it’s been adding centrifuges throughout this year, it started from none in the main facility operating it, it now has got 1,300. If it had 3,000 centrifuges, it could conceivably get enough nuclear material for a bomb within a year. Are you not worried that we need to re-look at the balance between the stick and the carrot in our current approach, given that nothing that we’ve done so far, has slowed them down. We’ve made them hurt, but nothing we’ve done so far has made them reconsider the longstanding strategic decision to go for the nuclear option.
DM: Well, there’s a separate discussion to be had about the extent to which, what has it slowed down, and how has it slowed down, and what effect has it had since 2003, and while we can get into that, I don’t particularly want to. I don’t want to leave on the record that it’s necessarily 100 per cent correct what you’ve said, but leave that to one side. We are ready to work with our partners on a third resolution, we think it’s very, very important that the international community remains clear and united on this issue, and I think there’s a very clear offer on the table for the Iranians.
FT: What do you think of Iran’s complicity in attacks on British soldiers in Basra?
DM: Well, I think that any evidence of Iranian engagement there is to be deplored. I think that we need regional players to be supporting stability, not fomenting discord, never mind death. But it does not have the right to be a force of instability.

Evening friends. I am back, for stupid reasons.

Here’s why I am awake.

I have a spinal ablation scheduled for Thursday. They are working on nerves at four different disk levels. I found out yesterday that I may need a full 48 hours for recovery and may even need some assistance at home.

This afternoon I was feeling pretty good, having spent all of my work time in the wheelchair. So …. I decided to do enough cooking this evening to last for TH, F and SAT.

Texteen likes potatoes in all forms, but most especially oven-baked, seasoned, potato slices. So, standing, I peeled 5 potatoes and cut them into the right size for my mini food processor. Also stood up to season the chicken, chop broccoli and zucchini, and then rinse all my tools and cutting boards.

So now, 6 hours later, my back is in agony. But, every time I am feeling good, it seems silly to ask for help. To ask a friend to help cook or to wait until Texteen is here and cajole him to peel and cut the potatoes.

I do remember my zippo… guaranteed to light so long as you fill it with lighter fluid and your flint was not too worn out… but the dam things would work for years if you did the maintenance :>) and as the little lady tells me “Older Than Dirt”

Unless you have a very deep desk, you should stick with the 20″. The 24″ is nice, but it’s so damned much screen real estate that you need some distance from it.

So I’d go with the 20″ 2.66ghz stock config. 2gb RAM, 320 SATA hard disk, dual-layer SuperDrive, Radeon HD 2600 PRO, all the wireless options are now stock, iSight, and AppleCare.

I maxed out the RAM and it’s a beast. Frighteningly fast with native apps, acceptably fast in Rosetta.

Suze: You might consider a laptop, if you don’t need a huge screen. The 15.4″ Apple-refurbed MacBook Pro is a damned nice box. I maxed out the Ram for less than and extra $100 and I’m busy building the expansion (USB2 and Firewire) system but you probably don’t need that. I’ve always been a desktop guy until now. If you need portabillity, the MacBook Pro is the way to go.

The Enterprise was supposed to be the fastest of the supercarriers, but it is getting OLD. Friends who have served on nuclear carriers have told me that they very seldom bring the reactors close to their true margins of stress in the same way you would your car or a conventional aircraft carrier or cruuiser. They all go several knots faster than their listed “30 knots plus” speed. But only insane people like Dick Cheney would push our miitary to such limits, so I’m sure nobody’s going to push those magnificently evil machines to that max.

Pricey… you can spend a lot less and get more ram, more drive and faster dual processor.

i don’t pay for the apple on the box. i pay for the customer support, and i pay for equipment that lasts 6+ years (the imac i’m replacing) and most of all, i’m paying for an operating systems that won’t kill me with frustration.

Better way to go, assuming that you can suffer through rebooting, is Boot Camp. No emulation at all, and the machine will absolutely scream.

The real problem is with the hardware drivers and not the operating system it self… the security features alone are a big improvement and the next gen networking is great.

Whatever floats your boat. I am stuck with a Lenovo Stinkpad for a work computer and it’s a total dog. Rowrf. My MBP runs circles around it and doesn’t even get that hot doing it.

there is a 20in imac (previous generation) in the apple refurbished store that i would consider. but i’m not interested in a 15in laptop – that’s too big to be very portable (my ibook is 12in), and too small to be desktop.

The other way is to buy the best BOX you can and install Ubantu… I like to play in that world also… Newest version doesn’t need all that partitioning just download and run it … it does all the rest…. and it is free!!

re: ram. crucial is my friend. looks like the 4 GB kit is $124.

re: parallels – i just bought it bundled with a lot of other goodies at the macupdate promo – for $65. (promo just ended, i think though).

That’s definitely the right price. And another telling thing about Apple’s refurbished store – AppleCare warranties are priced the same there as the retail store, and for the same terms (3 years), so the machine is very much the same as new. Just behind by one model cycle.

I run Parallels and it’s a processor and memory hog, as you’d expect. But I’m running XP Pro/sp2 under it – can’t say if Vista is any easier on resources.
