By refusing to listen to John McCain's feeble pleas not to run racist attack ads against Barack Obama, the North Carolina GOP is making him look weak, impotent and too lacking in political muscle to control the extremists in his own party. But the excuse they're using is that at bottom, "it's a North Carolina issue."
Who's the most senior member of the NC GOP? Well that would be Liddy Dole. NC Democratic Party Chair Jerry Meek has sent a letter to Dole saying "without a doubt, you could halt this ad with a simple telephone call."
Dole is up for re-election this year (and will be running against either Kay Hagen or Blue America candidate Jim Neal). But where is she? She's never in the state, she lives at the Watergate in DC, she rarely makes public appearances in NC. It seems she's gone Washington -- because once again, she's nowhere to be found when it comes to a North Carolina issue.
She can stop the racist attack ads against Obama, and we're asking her to send this letter:
Dear Chairwoman Linda Daves,
I disapprove of the content of the North Carolina Republican Party's recent advertisement "Extreme". I feel that it resorts to a type of negative politicking that betrays the best interest of North Carolinians.
I call on you, as Chairwoman of the North Carolina Republican Party, to immediately stop airing this advertisement. Failure to do so will reflect negatively on all North Carolina Republicans, and would necessitate that I return the Party's contributions to my campaign to disassociate myself from the vitriol which you appear to embrace.
We'll be working with NC bloggers (including Pam Spaulding) to deliver the petition to Dole's office. You can cosign here.

The state Republican Party says it will air an ad linking two Democratic candidates for governor to Barack Obama’s controversial former minister, despite objections from Sen. John McCain.
The ad shows video of the Rev. Jeremiah Wright and then slams Lt. Gov. Beverly Perdue and state Treasurer Richard Moore.

Well, it’s nice to see political advertising return to the golden age…of 1954.
“Obviously this advertisement was run by a third-party organization and has nothing to do with Senator Dole’s campaign,” Dole’s campaign said in a release with Stephens’ letter. “However, Senator Dole does want to avoid issues like this from occurring in the U.S. Senate race.”
The N.C. Democratic Party responded in a statement saying that Dole “should stop trying to change the subject and start telling the truth.” The release said that if Dole has the clout to pull together such an agreement within GOP ranks, she “should use that influence to stop the dishonest ad the NCGOP plans to run.”

Gone Washington? Elizabeth Dole is the Hillary Clinton of the Republican Party in terms of being a carpetbagging Senator At-Large. The only reason she maintains a domicile in North Carolina (Bob’s from Kansas) is because Kansas already has two Republican senators. At least Sen. Clinton shows her face in New York State once in a while, and not just Manhattan, either.
I understand tactically why you want to pin this on McCain on the national level (and call him “impotent” in the bargain) but at the NC level I’m skeptical whether complaining of racism doesn’t serve Republican aims just as well as just letting the ads air unrebutted. I’m ambivalent about decrying these racist insinuations. It is, after all, a free country and people are free to vote on their prejudices; you have to appeal to their better angels, and, barring that, to their real interests. If the Democratic Party actually champions “populist” policies and spends more energy making “class war” less whites will feel they have the luxury of succumbing to these prejudices. In the long run it’s worth being optimistic, but in the short run, in North Carolina, I wouldn’t be.

I think it’s more a matter of the factions in the RP doing whatever they want to do. No faction in the RP supports McCain - they’d rather see him with the nomination than another faction’s candidate, but they’re happy to see him lose, because it’s no reflection on their faction. He’s the Designated Loser. So they don’t care if what they’re doing to fire up their own faction members makes McCain look weak or wimpy.

Yep - I can testify that our Senator goes to the State Fair almost every year(in the hinterlands of Syracuse)and actually breaks bread with the locals. I’m not sure she has had to show her prowess at milking a cow, but she definitely has spent a good long time in Upstate New York — certainly way more time than D’amato, Schumer or even St. Monahan.
Actually, neither of our (NC) senators are particularly visible. At least Burr sends replies to my messages on telecom immunity and such - even if they are boilerplate drivel. I get nothing from Dole.
IMO Jim Neal is by far the best challenger - I’ve heard him speak and answer questions extemporaneously. He did waffle a bit on my question about what he would do about criminal behavior in the present administration, but I realize that he can’t say anything too radical if he actually wants to get elected.

Actually, Yes! We had same in our house. Spec.Ed/Gifted all crammed into the same young brain. Happily, he turnout out a compassionate, highly competent and respected, AND happy adult, but it wasn’t easy. Best thing you can do: stay in close touch, school and parent must work together. Teachers, especially in this age of school budget cutbacks, crowded classrooms, etc., are stretched to their limits, as are you, I’m sure. So be watchful to make sure they don’t cut corners in ways that short-change what he needs. Good luck. Give him a hug from your network buddies, and tell him to do the same for you.
