Medicare is complicated in that people can choose “pure medicare” in which the govt. administers the system–true single payer- or they can opt for plans through private insurance companies.

By definition, though, “single payer” implies that the insurance companies are out of the action.

Excellent point, perris, and I’d add that it’s good biz–for everybody but the healthcare industry–not only for productivity, per your comment, but also consumerism.
