No guest today– and no Blue America endorsement. Or, let’s put it another way. Both candidates running in the Oregon Democratic primary are so excellent– and so much better than the rubber stamp incumbent– that Blue America is eager to get behind either one. We’re happy to leave that up to Oregon Democrats to decide. Normally, the only time we feel comfortable inserting ourselves into a primary is when there is a truly progressive Democrat fighting a reactionary one– like our latest pick, Ed Fallon in Iowa. (Meet him here May 10.) Fallon is going up against a Bush Dog/Blue Dog, Leonard Boswell, who has been almost as supportive of the Bush-corporate agenda as he has been of Democratic congressional initiatives. And soon we’ll be hearing more about Georgia state Senator Regina Thomas’ campaign to win in Georgia’s 12th CD, a seat currently held by someone far to the right of even Boswell, John Barrow.
Oregon is a very different story. The Republican incumbent, Gordon Smith, although– like many Republicans– claiming to be a "moderate" and an "independent," has a voting record that is extremely right wing and in almost total lockstep with the extremist Bush agenda– on everything. Both Democrats, Jeff Merkley and Steve Novick are incredibly good progressive alternatives. If either one of them winds up in the U.S. Senate, it will mean a giant step forward towards a more progressive America.
Their positions on all the big issues are virtually identical– identical to each other and identical to the Blue America ideals. Each has endorsed the Responsible Plan to End the War in Iraq and both will support efforts to end the occupation as fast as can be done safely. Both of these guys have strong and exemplary plans on the environment, health care, the economy and education. And both are strong supporters of civil rights and have come out against Bush’s telecom immunity plans. Each also has a history of working for progressive issues and candidates– Jeff Merkley as Oregon House Speaker and leader of FuturePAC (which helped flip the Oregon House from red to blue in 2006) and Steve Novick as an effective political consultant and advisor to many of Oregon’s prominent progressive candidates for office and organizations (including Governor Kulongoski, SEIU and AFL-CIO).
Oregon bloggers are extremely impassioned about the primary, and partisans on each side make the Clinton-Obama contest look like a garden party. It’s really a shame and benefits no one but the execrable Gordon Smith. There’s an hour-long "debate" between Merkley and Novick (and two minor candidates) at the Willamette Weekly editorial office and now available at BlueOregon. It’s about an hour long but if you have the time and interest, it will be well worth your while.
We plan to invite the winner of the May 20th primary to come over to Blue America and talk with us about the race against Smith. But if you’ve got some spare change in your pocket this week and want to do a good turn, please consider sending some toward Kentucky progressive Greg Fischer, our guest here a few weeks ago. Earlier today I posted a new video that could help Greg against the reactionary shill Bruce Lunsford at DWT and I’m hoping we can help him put ads like this on the air. It’s either that or a sure-fire victory for Mitch McConnell in November. (And if you believe me when I say Gordon Smith is no good… there are barely words to describe how awful McConnell is.) Anyway, I have 5 autographed copies of Al Franken’s book, The Truth for the first 5 people who donate at least $30 to Greg’s campaign here.

About Firedoglake
Hi. I LOVE Oregon. Would love to live there sometime. I’d be very tempted to move that date up if it became a Progressive state!
I get the feeling that Portland and some of the towns like Eugene and Ashland are already among the most progressive place sto live in America. And Oregon is fairly blue politically.
I know the eastern part of the state tends to be a little reactionary
right. i heard/read that too, Howie. and I THINK Oregon is doing more toward environmental responsibility than other states as well, if memory serves me, which it oft does not.
:)
Hi Howie,
how cool is that!?
both Senate candidates are good.
< insert smile here >
Hi Howie,
I don’t know who I’d vote for in the Oregon primary. Thankfully, I don’t live there.
Meanwhile, there is some hopeful news out of PA. Sam Bennett polled way more than Charles Dent in the 15th legislative district. I don’t take this as proof she’ll win, but it’s at least a sign that she could.
Hey Howie! Sounds like a great win-win for progressives.
Howie, how do we fight against an opponent who talks about smaller government, but increases the size of government more than any other administration in history. From $1.9 trillion in 2000 to $2.9 trillion in 2007 and of course the war is off budget useing supplementals, a smart way to hide the cost.
my older son and his son live in Bend. i lived in McMinnville ‘05-’06. one of the great bookstores of the world is in Portland and some really fine wine is made in the Willamette Valley (even the French are checking it out).
i’ll be visiting Bend and Portland in July.
I’m registered to vote in Michigan but i’ll sure check out how Merkley and Novick are doing. Good on ya both!
Wow, excellent!
Hi Elliot!
Couldn’t there be some creative way to get both of these guys “in”, in WashDC? Wow, so many places starving for good representation and here are 2 in one local!
Oregon is like many western states where sections are very blue and others have been ignored and turned very red….. Washington State is similarly split….. As a former Oregonian am watching this race with interest….
Gordon Smith is such a flip-flopper that McBush looks pretty mild…. one minute Smith is crying on the senate floor about the Iraq War and the next he is voting in lock step…… Only when it came closer to his need to run and seeing that he was going to face REAL competition that he started the pancake turning on every issue….
AND he is another GOP beauty queen…… part of the good hair club….
I was only there once. We spent Halloween night, 2004 in downtown Portland in the “square” there and then toured around the state for a few more days. I’ve wanted to go back ever since we passed the “You Are Now Leaving Oregon” sign! I missed it for days thereafter. I just loved it there, loved the energy!
got a glimpse of her election night, definitely the preferred alternative to Dent.
Dam Bennett is ROMPING. While I was in DC, she was staying at Jane’s house and meeting lots of good people. She is giving Dent the most difficult time he’s ever had. Sam is a savvy fighter and she knows how to stand up for progressive principles and values. I have really high hopes for her in Congress.
I have a feeling that anyone here who watches that Willamette Weekly debate at Blue Oregon (linked above) will come out with fairly strong feelings that as good as these two are, one is a bit better. One took a really positive stand on bloggers and the other… oy.
*sigh*
does seem like an embarrassment of riches compared to most couple other states.
Dent was whining that all her cash came from out of the district.
waa waa
I Love Powell’s Books. Don’t get here often but have spent 4-5 hours browsing through it.
All his cash comes from lobbyists and he has a voting record to prove that their investment in him has paid off royally.
That, somehow, begs that question of where Dent gets his cash.
I would love to get a feel for which House candidate and which Senate candidate on the Blue America list people like the most. It’ll help us with our planning.
Here is my list and reason….
Darcy Burner – she will represent my son and grandchildren
Charlie Brown – he will represent my cousins
Donna Edwards – she will represent boyfriends family…
Eric Massa just because he kicks ass
Howard Shanker – AZ -01 because we need an environmental attorney in congress
I like Andrew Rice, but mostly because I would like to defeat James Inhofe.
katymine is always smart and reminds me that Howard Shanker has worked hard for the environment and we need that in congress.
I’ve got sister in North Bend and let me tell you, that is on economically depressed place. The local sawmill is at fraction of capacity, mainly proccesing lumber barged in from BC. The biggest employers in the area are the local hospital and the indian casino. If they didn’t have a ban on self-service gas the employment picture would be even worse.
I was impressed that she was one of the original sponsors of the Responsible Plan To End The War In Iraq. That’s such a far cry from Dent’s record of protesting a little before he votes with the Bush Administration that I think that alone should carry her over the top.
I don’t like to just go by who gets the most money to get a sense of who the community likes most and wants us to help most
Alan Grayson – HOwie explains it – we need him in congress to BRING THE CHARGES: As a no-nonsense attorney prosecuting war profiteers in Iraq, Alan Grayson has already accomplished more outside of DC than the hapless and corrupt incumbent could ever imagine. Alan would be the worst nightmare Insider criminals could ever imagine. He literally knows where all the bodies are buried. And he’s not shy about discussing impeachment. With Alan Grayson in Congress, no one will be sweeping the crime of the century under the rug.
Steve Cohen – because he’s as good as Darcy Burner but doesn’t get as much press/attention from the grassroots
Vic Wulsin – because she has a real chance to rid us of Mean Jean Schmidt
Massa and Edwards were also co-signers of the RP2EWI, and Burner the instigator. Except for Massa, whom I’ve just not learned enough about yet, all are on Slobber and Spittle Blue.
True. More often than not money takes the sense out of politics.
we’ve had a flood of money lately for Sam Bennett, Andrew Rice, Larry Kissell, Alan Grayson, Jim Neal… some of the others
I don’t have the funds to give much more than I already have but as a native of the Bluegrass, I very much appreciate your keeping the light shining on Greg Fischer and his race against Lunsford and then McConnell.
I have met everyone on my list, talked to them personally, heard their positions and know that what they will bring to congress will be what we all need, more and MUCH much better Democrats…… and also Democrats with a spine…. I would pay admission to watch Eric Massa during an investigation.
The Lunsford people asked a friend of mine if there was any way to shut me up. He laughed.
Right now, the folks at the top of my list are
Tom Allen (ME-Sen) — Susan Collins must go, and making her friend Short Ride Joe look weak and ineffective is an extra bonus.
Jim Neal (NC-Sen) — The NC GOP needs to be taken down a few notches, and Jim is just the guy to do it.
Donna Edwards (MD-04) — If you want to make Bush Dogs and their K Street corporate contributors squirm, just whisper two words in their ears: “Al Wynn.”
Charlie Brown (CA-04) — strong progressive voice in a district growing more progressive every day.
I’m so with you on that. Eric will just kick their asses. He’s not afraid of anything. I would love to see Boehner weeping some more. I need new pictures for my music clips!!
Well, obviously, I’m not one for religion but I have to say, after listening to the full sermon, I understand Wright’s position and do support his message.
omg, HEAR HEAR! to getting rid of Inhofe. I’ve thrown some money at Rice just because i can’t stand that idjit and I live in Colorado!
707!!!
Sounds like you’ve struck a few nerves!
I whispered “Al Wynn” in Rahm’s ear a few weeks ago in a bar in DC and I thought he was going to spit at me or something. Jane came over and snapped a picture with her cell phone, which diffused the situation.
oops, wrong thread, sorry for off-topic.
I’m not in OR, so won’t be voting in this race, but I sure would like to see Smith tossed out of office. His approval ratings aren’t very good according to the poll at BlueOregon so either Novick or Merkley have a good shot at winning this seat.
The Portland area is very, very blue, but the rest of the state is rather conservative. Kerry won OR in 2004, but not by much.
:>
Bwahahaha! Is Jane gonna post that picture?
We were both so pissed off that it didn’t come out. He hangs out in dark bars.
yeah, would love to see that :)
Rahm’s another guy we could do without. That crack about the Iraqis not having enough skin in the game managed to be both stupid and insensitive to an epic degree. Where do we find people like him?
Why does this not surprise me at all?
Wall Street
And why are Blue Dogs like Rham Democrats?
Howie…. Question….. would Blue America get interested in the Maricopa County race for Sheriff to unseat our famous pink underwear Sheriff Joe the media hog?
Dan Saban is running and he is in the mold of Eric Massa….
If we cannot tank Sheriff Joe in the national media I see a future for him as a talking wingnut head on cable…..
Is anyone else having trouble accessing ActBlue? I can’t get it to open and I want to check to see if all the autographed Al Franken books are accounted for
I don’t know anything about this guy. Where is the race?
Got a link handy?
PEAK?
roots run deep
I got ActBlue and BlueAmerica to open. They seem fine.
http://www.actblue.com/list/blueamerica08
loads fine here!
Both BlueAmerica and my ActBlue page opened fine for me.
Arizona – Maricopa County which is the Phoenix Valley the 4th largest and most populous county in America …
Dan Saban for Sheriff
DFA of Maricopa county have endorsed him….
Big issues with current activities of Sheriff Joe with his rounding up brown people demanding immediate verification of citizenship, ACLU and the Civil Rights division of the DOJ are getting involved…. can send you all the dirt… ;)
Hiya Howie!
I tried to make a list of my top Blue America candidates, but I failed. You’ve done such a terrific job, they are all my favorite.
But I am particularly fond of Sam Bennett, Vic Wulsin, Howard Shanker, Martin Heinrich, and Andrew Rice. Also Jon Powers and Jim Neal. And Charlie Brown and Darcy Burner. Plus Tom Allen, Greg Fischer, and Alan Grayson — also Joe Garcia. And Eric Massa! Also Leslie Byrne and Dan Maffei.
And, of course, Larry Kissell.
See, I can’t choose!
Thanks for all your hard work, Howie, and best of luck to the progressive Democrat who wins the Oregon nomination. We need to call these “moderate” GOPs on their shit.
That reminds me. I did not cast a primary vote in PA-03 for AG because I did not know the candidates. Any information ITR would be welcome.
And we have some more good ones coming. Jane just had lunch with Judy Feder (VA-10) a few days ago and came away very impressed/ And next week we have the Mayor of Huntington Beach, Debbie Cook, who’s taking on everyone’s favorite member of the Taliban, Dana Rohrabacher. And wait ’til you meet Ed Fallon and Regina Thomas!!
Howard Shanker cuz he is in the district next to me.
Larry Kissell cuz I think he will really serve his rural district in very positive way.
Charlie Brown cuz I always hated John Doolittle(I remember when he was first elected) and Charlie can speak out on the war.
Vic Wulsin cuz I just like her and fact that she is a doctor who has seen the world I think she is a person we really need to work on health issues.
Donna Edwards cuz she is not going to be a wallflower but will speak up.
ANd katymine is right Joke Arpio has to go down the sewer.
Howie, do you know who assigns new congressmen their staff?
I see my congressman has some staffers that are shared by several of the Blue Dogs. Is this because they’re all new, or all Blue Dogs, or just of no consequence?
thanks Matt on reminding me on Vic Wulsin…. she also on my list…
They pick their own staffers. Is your congressman Bill Foster? He’s 100% in the pocket of Blue Dog Melissa Bean and she has been calling every single shot for him.
Howie,
I can’t the blue america page to load up properly, seems like less than half of the material is loading.
It’s been going on and off for me too. It’s working for me right now
We saw some blue dog bend with Harry Mitchell from AZ CD-05 at first and what we did is ask his local staffer to join our local DFA group, take him along to events to see and hear what his district is saying and did see a turn to the progressive views he had as a state senator….
The local groups are meeting with the local office on a regular basis and they now do not see us as left wing loons but actually concerned citizens who vote and can get out the vote for them…
thanks for your perservering efforts howie and jane…..
vic wilson’s district is right next to boehner’s, it really needs to go blue…..would be a huge deflating thing for the gop….huge…..once there’s a hole in the dam, you know what happens….and i like dr. vic.
i’m from boehner country, family and friends there….
howie, any books left?
and cbl2 gave me a link the other day that is spectacular–can pull up govt funding by rep, by district, by state, by institution, by govt department or use the search engine, also gives info on grant funding. a gold mine of info.
http://www.fedspending.org
(jane, please bring back the calendar : ) )
No Oregonians posting?
Hmmmm
There is a difference between Merkley and Novick worth mentioning. One, Schumer seems to be leaning towards Merkley, (not confirmed) and two, the first meeting I attended when Merkley announced, his answer to impeachment was the Blue Dog response practically verbatim!
The Blue portion of Oregon lies west of the Cascade mountains. Eastern Oregon is quite Red, and also the coast, leaving basically the Willamette Vally the blue portion. Inasmuch as the bulk of the population lies here, blue carries, but not always.
Some eastsiders want to form the 51st state. That tell you something.
Merkley is a fine candidate, so is Novick. We have had good Senators from the Republican side as well. Mark Hatfield is one. Wayne Morse was a maverick, starting Republican then switching to the Democrats. Morse and Gruening of Alaska were the two dissenting voices in the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution.
So, we have a fine history of sticking out and standing for something. Well, most of the time!
That’s great. Mitchell has been a huge disappointment. His voting record is putrid. But I’ve talked with him and I wouldn’t write him off entirely. I think local citizens working with these Blue Dogs and bringing them along slowly is terrific. Jane and Glenn are even going to sit down and try to talk some sense into Carney.
howie, any books left?
Yes
1,824 DAYZ AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND…
Citizen Howie Klein and the Firepup Freedom Fighters:
How are Smith’s approval numbers is he still over 50%?
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNITION, ALL A THESE BASTARDS’VE GOTTA GO!!
Carney?
Sense?
Hahahahahahaha
ok howie at 75, mark one for me, takes a while on dial-up……..
thanks, will be a present for someone special.
Even given my low expectations of him, Carney’s been a disappointment. All I really expected was that he’d be critical of the Iraq War and toward the progressive end of the spectrum in the rather conservative district he represents. Low expectations, but apparently they weren’t low enough.
I always start with ….. Mitchell is light years from old JD Hayworth….. anything is better that blowheart bigot Hayworth…. who is now the drive time radio talk show host on a local 50,000 watt clear channel radio station.
Just keep pushing…. never stop…… call and talk to Doug…..let him know how I feel on an issue….. asking if the congressional health plan now covers spine transplants or do they need to grow one of their own?
As of March 27, Bush had a disapproval rating in Oregon of 66% (75% among women amd 93% among people who care about the environment). The last poll on senators shows Gordon Smith with a 50% approval (Wyden had a 60% approval). A 50% approval at this point in the cycle has usually meant defeat for the incumbent.
Nope, see my link @42 for details. Smith’s approval was at 48% when the poll was taken. He can be beaten.
This has to be part of our thinking. Carney was a disappointment, but Webb and Tester have (mostly) lived up to expectations. I don’t expect flaming liberals to come from the states they represent.
Howie! Because I greatly appreciate the work you are doing I just donated $20 to each of the candidates I listed above – Wulsin, Shanker, Edwards, Brown and Kissell.
Keep up the great work!
Well, I expected Carney would keep his word and vote for the Mathew Shepard Hate Crimes Bill, but nooooooo. First chance he got, he broke his word.
Throwing vulnerable people under the bus after they make an effort to garner you support is the worst kind of pandering. He also used all the horrid right-wing frames about “creating special classes of victims” to excuse his vote.
He is a liar and a cad. I never, ever root for a Democrat to lose a House race. But this is one seat I won’t mind seeing turned red.
Thanks Matt! That’s fantastic and I’m sure it will make each one of them feel appreciated while they’re out slugging it out with some right wing imbecile. Poor Vic Wulsin; can you imagine what she has to go through fighting with that Schmidt character?
Quick drive by and OT. My books The Real McCain and Glenn G’s Great American Hypocrites came today, earlier than expected.
One look at the cover of McCain and I immediately made a book cover for it. The cover is pretty, but it is just a veneer.
I’ll be back later; no time to read now. Back to you Pups. (Love you all.)
Like dealing with a nails screeching over a chalkboard I imagine.
Even with those numbers, the Democrats seem so ineffective that Bush’s low numbers are neutralized. The Democrats have no message and seem to be always on defense. They’ll probably even be easliy blamed for the economic problems that are clearly the Republics’ fault.
And Nancy ‘Obstruction of Justice” Pelosi need to have photo copies of our checks supporting her opponenet. She is complicit in the war crimes by putting up a firewall to protect the White House perps from IMPEACHMENT. Please keep that in front. It will help win the White House back when the crimes are put on cspan. What do you think Howie and all?
.
Howie – what do you know about the guy Childers running for Wicker’s seat in MS? I am getting a big kick out of his success but is he a nut?
I was educated in Eugene at U of O. The red part is real redneck red. Loggers and farmers seem to view bike riders and joggers as hood ornaments.I had many close calls as a distance runner.
This week the GOP tried blaming them for the high gas prices but the Dems hit back hard and effectively.
I hope he wins but he’ll be a Blue Dog and we’ll be LUCKY if he votes with the Republicans only half the time (on substantive matters)
dakine, made a donation in honor of your being kentucky blue through and through.
and made another small one for vic wulsin.
howie, would it be possible/feasible to be able to opt out of regular mailings from candidates when you contribute? vic wulsin’s stuff i use, i pass it on to people in her area, even left one on a table once….
but the others, it’s just a waste of paper and money to mail it….email from them is plenty.
Thanks for the reply – I figured as much. But the NRCC must be pissing their pants over this one – too, too, funny
Did any of this penetrate with the MSM and where middle American can see it?
Thanks dmac!
The whole country winds up better off if we can get rid of McConnell and replace him with a progressive.
We should ask ActBlue to add that opt-out option. Next week we take on Dana Rohrabacher. Should be fun.
Sorry Howie, had to do an errand.
My congressman is Zack Space.
dakine at 98–you’re welcome, i always donate in honor of someone, you deserve it!
mcconnel, ohhhhh, we could go on all day……i’ll just say he has always given me the ’creeps’……
bbl
What a good idea. Thanks, I’ll see if we can do that here.
howie at 99–others have mentioned it too, so, isn’t just my idea…..
was going to contact all of the campaigns to not mail me things, but just never have done it….
next week, then!
(and howie, mom and dad’s 80yr old neighbor is still wearing the ’impeach cheney’ hat, even to the country club to play golf..he’s in boehner country remember?….funny..so thanks again for the giveaways you have, i use them as presents….)
surprised not much input from oregonians here. both candidates are highly progressive, but there are differences.
1) novick (who i support) has been very forthright with his economic populism and anti-poverty platform, he wants to repeal nafta, he wants to lift the cap on SS taxes, he wants to tax capital gains just like income (among other things). merkley is still mostly progressive on economic issues, but on those three issues, for example, he wants to restructure nafta, keep the SS tax the way it is, and is comfortable with differences in cap gains and income tax rates.
2) merkley was recruited and partially bank-rolled by the dscc, and charles schumer. most non-merkley partisans believe this is why he has taken some muddled positions, rather than staking out strong, clear stances like novick (on gay marriage, impeachment, nclb, single payer helthcare)–he is expected by us to run to the center if he wins the primary. he has also been reluctant to criticize fellow democrats, and has made this a big focus of his campaign attacking novick for disloyalty when novick makes such criticisms. in fact, that has been the bulk of the merkley campaign lately, obfuscate and attack.
3) the split amongst supporters is fairly clearly mostly identity based: for people active within party party politics (the establishment, if you will), merkley is their guy; he lead strong house session in ‘07 and helped pass some good progressive legislation (though his recrod in ‘08 was not so strong). for the progressive wing of the grassroots, and more dems who are more independent (perhaps used to be green or unaffiliated) but not necessarily active within party politics, novick is their guy; the candidate who is not afraid to speak the truth, even if it means criticizing fellow dems, or possibly even alienating more conservative primary voters.
there you have it. so while they do share many similar positions, you have differences of populism vs reformism, style, tone and caution, and identity within party.
Oregon is still a backwater state to the east coast, petrichor.
Merkley was tapped because nobody back east knew about Novcik, so the plan was to engage Merkley and see if Novcik can beat him. If so, he’s our man, if not it’s Merkley.
A business decision, that’s all it is.
Howie, Good post but the title (”Blue America Takes a Peak at the Oregon Senate Race”) needs fixing. You are taking a “peek” not a “peak.” Someone may already have pointed this out (haven’t read all the comments).
starbuck,
is that right? i mean, you said “the plan was to engage merkley and see if novick can beat him”; whose plan? do you have some inside information that we don’t know about here in the backwater? (trust me, i don’t know a lot). what you say makes sense in a strange way.
overall, even though this primary has pretty much been a pie fight rather than a battle over progressive ideals (for which i think the merkley camp takes most of the blame), i think we’ve learned a lot here and will be better prepared to take the fight to smith.
4 hours and over 100 comments but apparently some of us are still clearing the sleep from our eyes.
It’s fixed, and thanks for the heads up.
That’s what I was told by a person who ought to know. However, I never could check it out.
So, it’s hearsay. But it troubles me (as if I should be troubled by anything political these days. Or maybe all of it!)
Jeff Merkley is ideally suited to dethroning Gordon Smith. People can say what they want about the DSCC, but the fact of the matter is that Merkley has racked up far more endorsements from OREGON unions, organizations and individuals than anyone else in the race. They range from the SEIU and AFSCME unions to the Sierra Club to Basic Rights Oregon (LGBT rights organization).
For those who live in or near Portland, former Senator Max Cleland, who has endorsed Merkley, will be in Portland on Tuesday April 29th to hold a morning Town Hall meeting with Jeff Merkley at Portland State University. Later in the afternoon they’ll hold another one in Eugene at the University of Oregon. The topic at both will be two-pronged: 1. Iraq and 2. taking (better!!) care of veterans once the military has used them up and spit them out.
I invite those who care about our military veterans to check out the websites of every candidate from every party running for this Senate seat. Merkley alone has a visible and growing cadre of veterans openly supporting him for the Senate. Perhaps the two most famous veterans backing him are General Tony McPeak – who is national co-chair for Obama – and the Special Forces guy that John Kerry saved in Vietnam, Jim Rassman. Another, Colonel Jon Zall, is not well known but he was one of Howard Dean’s veterans advisors in 2004. So that gives you some idea of the kind of veterans support Merkley enjoys.
Gordon Smith can run but he cannot hide from Oregonians any longer.
Change is coming!
Definitely listen to them both (Merkley and Novick).
Listen carefully to the entire message. We absolutely need people in Congress who are elected holistically, not for one or two things that happen to be dear to one’s heart.
Actually, I really liked Merkley’s response on impeachment. Merkley has called for vigorous investigations of war profiteering and torture and said that impeachment should never be taken off the table. I’d also like to mention that even though the DSCC is backing Merkley, Novick also tried to get their support but they decided to back Merkley.
Whoa! Novick isn’t for single payer health care! Merkley has also called for investigations into torture and war profiteering and said that impeachment should never be taken off the table. Novick tried to get the support of the DSCC but they decided to back Merkley, so I”m not sure why that is a reason not to like Merkley. Both candidates are for full marriage equality, and it should be noted that Just Out, Equality Giving and Basic Rights Oregon endorsed Merkley for his work in the House. He championed and fought like hell to pass domestic partnerships legislation and anti-discrimination legislation. BTW, I can’t believe you would say he’s expected to run to the center! He has been one of the most skilled progressive legislators the state has seen in a long time. Even the OLCV said that Merkley deserves much of the credit for the greenest session in the last thirty years. He’s a solid progressive, so please don’t try to push the moderate meme because it’s totally false.
I’d also like to add that I support Merkley 100% and as far as I know I’m not part of the “establishment.” I’m just a fellow blogger/activist who works full time and lives below the poverty line. I’ve seen what Merkley has done for my state and that’s why I’m so staunchly behind his candidacy.
Late to the game, but as an Oregonian I must chime in. petricor, preemptive karma and sarahlane all make excellent points about Merkley v. Novick, and I’m still undecided. Like ‘em both. Imo, Merkley appears a tad more moderate/centrist then Novick (not necessarily a good thing), but I think is an electability issue. I worry about that… And I want Smith to LOSE!
Like others upthread have discussed, this state is either very progressive (Portland, Eugene, Ashland (where I live)) or quite red. (Though the state as a whole also has a very libertarian, independent streak.) I work in Medford, 15 minutes away and a much bigger city than Ashland, and the attitudes are remarkably different. I still see far too many suv’s and ribbon decals there, and some pointedly right-wing views, though a lot less W04 stickers.
Now if only we had one of these guys running against Walden, my horrible Rep. Sadly, neither lives in our district. Ashland is the southern “toe” of a district that includes the eastern 2/3 of this state – vast, empty and red. We were horribly gerrymandered, our voice stifled at the ballot box by an area, that though beautiful, has very little in common with Ashland.
Lastly, I re-registered as a Dem two weeks ago so I can vote in the primary. We even seem to be of some importance this year (though presidentially, in all honesty, Obama’s already won it – you know it, I know it, but the press won’t admit it).
Right on, sarahlane. Jeff Merkley’d take that fight straight to the capitol in DC and do what’s right for America.
As for healthcare, I think Jeff knows a thing or two about affordable healthcare. It’s one of his strongest passions. His wife Mary is a nurse, and Oregons nurses have endorsed Jeff because they feel he’s the right candidate to tackle the important healthcare reforms in DC.
