I love this clip with Rick Perlstein and David Frum. David posits a need for a more authoritarian hand, and Rick appeals to historical accuracy and to reason. And through this very short clip, you see the differences between Democratic and Republican worldviews -- and how failing to learn all of the lessons of our history can distort your present view of politics. And I find that fascinating. (You can watch the Bloggingheads debate in its entirety here.)
We did an extended book salon on Rick's superb history on Barry Goldwater and American politics a while back (Part I and Part II). And something that Digby said in her introduction to the discussion in Part II has stuck with me:
Before the Storm does have a lot to say about movement politics. It’s not Goldwater who’s the main protagonist in Perlstein’s account; it’s the conservative activists who used his candidacy to rebuild American politics from the grassroots. But Perlstein also is interested in ideas – as the subtitle says, the book is about the “Unmaking of the American Consensus.” Perlstein wants to know how the smug liberal consensus underlying the Affluent Society of 1960s America was shattered, and replaced by a new, conservative-friendly, set of received wisdoms. “Before the Storm” only begins to describe how this happened, but suggests that it surely had its origins with Goldwater’s supporters. In short, Perlstein tells us that you have to understand both movement politics and ideas if you want to understand why the conservatives won.
Ideas are at the fore of Perlstein’s pamphlet The Stock Market and the Super Jumbo, where he draws out the lessons of the conservative movement for today’s Democrats. Perlstein argues that the Democratic party’s key problem is that it isn’t prepared to commit to a long-term political vision. Goldwater’s conservatives “made sure everyone knew what it meant to be a Republican” by committing to a set of ideas which were pretty unpopular at the outset. They pushed these ideas again and again until they gained legitimacy, and finally became received wisdom among the political classes. They spent sixteen years in the wilderness before they won; but when they won, they took the prize. They were able to reshape the political consensus in their image.
This is the reason why ‘centrist’ and ‘bipartisan’ pundits like David Broder are so damaging to the Democratic party. They’ve internalized Republican talking points about where the political center of gravity is, and how to enforce the boundaries of ‘acceptable’ debate. Progressives are at a perpetual disadvantage, because the terms of political argument are rigged against them. Perlstein’s solution is for the Democratic party to reconnect with the core interests of its voters by “making commitments that do not waver from election to election.” Specifically, they need to commit irreversibly to economic liberalism, and “stick with it even if they lose, in order to win big.”
The Democratic party establishment has forgotten how to effectively fight back, as Rick so effortlessly does in the clip. Refutation of false narratives requires advance preparation and a willingness to stand up and say "wrong" when one is confronted with an ideological or factual falsehood.
But the mumbled responses of the party elites have been ingrained over years of loud, rampant buffoonery by the Newt Gingriches and the bombastic stylings of Rush Limbaugh and his ilk. Democratic party elders never understood that a response was needed -- that simply ignoring the loud goobers in the corner was not nearly adequate. And the media -- suffering from Battered Press Syndrome -- simply wants the meanness to stop, but fails to understand that until they start doing their jobs and being skeptics instead of perpetuating the self-created Republican myths, it is they who have backed themselves into corners of their own making.
Those of us who have spent the last few years doing progressive pushback saw that immediately. Jane's series On Image (Part I and Part II) is seared into my brain precisely because it was so clearly needed -- and because the only folks who learned these lessons were the ones who don't make money perpetuating the status quo of political consultancy and meme-repetition.
Which is why the recent conservative whining about the vast resources of the message machine on the left (HA!) is so supremely satisfying -- and humorous. The right has an enormous web of monetary support and institutionalized perpetuation machinery. But what they have failed to do with all of those resources is to learn the lessons of their own conservative history -- failed to take note of the bad, and to change it rather than simply screaming they were right at the top of their lungs until everyone else just agreed so they'd shut up.
The sole reason the right's message machine is failing is because their lies aren't working any longer. Because people are too worried about affording necessities and keeping their jobs and their homes to shell out for some snake oil falsehoods on the side.
But that tiny group that is still buying it, including GOP stalwarts and party elders? They've either bought into the lies altogether, or they are too steeped in them to ever publicly admit they are part of the problem because it would ruin their reputation and their access to all that wingnut welfare fundage.
As a result, they replicate these failures over and over again. And we are all reaping what they've sown with George Bush and Dick Cheney, who have so run the Republican brand into the ground that, as Sidney says, their candidates for President this year tried to avoid mentioning him at all costs. With a media which is more suited to repetition of the prefab narrative PR image of John McCain, we are all going to have our hands full from here to November if we want to see any change in the status quo.
Here is what I know: people are hurting right now, and our political and social structure is so off kilter that we could have started rectifying problems years ago and it still would not have been soon enough. What we need is real leadership on a whole host of issues. And we need it now. Would that the leadership were coming from those we elect as our representatives.
To that end, I'm making a plea today on behalf of more and better Democrats: we need more of them in office shaping the policies and actions of the Democratic party. Let's call this another $10 day -- pick a Blue America candidate of your choice and make a donation. Call up their election HQ and volunteer to make calls or stuff envelopes or knock on doors. Do something to help get better people into office in November. Let's get to work...

Good morning, Christy.
Morning Christy, Lindy :)
Morning all! More coffee?
Put it in bold, Christy!
dmac just posted something OT downstairs but definitely on topic here:
* * *
OT—i just started a revolt, HURRAH!!!
the local radio show, called about the lilly ledbetter fair pay act, people started calling in about it……voinavich, he voted nay-he said because amendment procedures weren’t followed…..
people call in about issues, their own, but this time people started joinin in on each others’….
took a while, but it’s happening…..wow it feels good to hear people asking for more info and using it…..wow…..
some around here do, but i’ve heard a lot more new voices calling in for phone numbers and giving info…..
the host just now said let’s get 500 people to call, flood his officesl……i didn’t say that part…
i also reminded people to call harry reid….
202-224-3121
800-450-8293
and then a lady called about an article in a union magazine (don’t know which one) about elaine chao–it gave a website.
www.shameonelaine.org
thanks fdl, without your guidance and information i never would have developed a plan on how to get info out, and wouldn’t have done it in a miilion years.
(and i forgot to say, cuz i’m humble, guess i’m not anymore by saying this, but many many people keep saying today during their calls how much they appreciated my ’reasoned’ opinion and information…one guy said if i don’t want to give my name, could i give a nickname so they can quit calling me ’that lady’……hey es-so ya think turtle with the spunky bullhorn would do?)
bbl, gonna go plant some herbs…..just had to share.
((((fdl))))
Reid switched his vote to a “no” at the end for procedural reasons, so he can bring the bill back up again later. Just so people know when they are looking at the vote tally link…
christy-
i was epu’d–but it is on topic, push back includes getting info out and when your representative isn’t representing you, and if the feet don’t move, then put someone else in office……the more informed people are, the more they demand to be represented……….that is what i have come to believe…..that is what i have learned here.
and diane rehm is doing a show on the lilly ledbetter fair pay act right now, i am disappointed that she didn’t do it before the vote….
take care and hope you don’t mind the OT, i just wanted you to know that i appreciate what you and everyone at fdl do, and that i am using it….calls and letters…every single day.

thank you dmac!
Yay! Good work!
To a large extent, the “leaders” of the conservative movement didn’t lead it at all. It was fueled in part by grassroots reaction to such diverse things as:
Brown vs. Board of Education
Sex Education
Anti War protests
Civil Rights Legislation
Court decisions outlawing prayer in schools
etc.
Putative “leaders” of the conservative movement merely wrapped all that fear and anger under a banner and declared the birth of “conservatism” which found it’s most perfect political expression in Nixon’s “Southern Strategy”…
The conservative movement was born in rascism- not fancy ass speeches. It continues to feed at the same trough.
Great work! I’ve got something coming up on Ledbetter in a bit — really good job calling in and getting the ball rolling on Voinavich. He deserves some “shame on you” calls in a big way today!
ahhh Perlstein - the wonky hotness !
answers the question of where the next Terkel or Hirsch will come from now don’t it ;)
still reading through all your links Christy - but firedogs I cannot recommend those 2 Book Salon threads enough - have a look !
Christy, my candidate for the House from my district is not on Act Blue. I’m giving her support through volunteering. She’s running in a June 3 primary against a real bush dog. Both the republicans and the democrats lobbied him to run, and, judging from the televised debate, he would be more of the same. So…Cheryl Sabel for Congress!
sorry christy, i didn’t clarify, i told people to call harryreid to bring it back up again……
dakine pointed out the procedural aspect of it last night, i forgot about that……
so much to learn, i need a book or two about congressional procedure, anyone know of a concise one?
it can be a little deep, but ianal….
ok, gotta go do a few things, will check back later.
and i am disappointed about diane rehm waiting until after the vote to do the show……very.
I was in school with Frum (though I didn’t know him.) It was a great environment; it amazes me how he managed to learn so little.
I’ll be working for Leslie Byrne again this weekend (after spending Sun-Tues in PA for Obama.) I’ll either be canvassing or going to a fundraiser on Saturday, so please count me in for the $10 day even though it won’t show up on Blue America.
That’s a very common procedural tactic used by both parties for generations, and one reason why trying to track the positions of the party leaders based on the vote tallies is very tricky.
Good reminder to everyone.
Per your request Christy, $20 to Rick Noriega in Texas.
FWIW, Feingold is supporting him too.
Oh, and also, that’s pretty weaselly stuff from Voinovich. He may think he’s clever, but normal people have no trouble at all seeing “I voted against it because proper procedure wasn’t followed” as the same thing as “we’re denying your claim because you filled out the form wrong.”
The “religious right” had it’s early beginning in California with a woman’s one person war against sex education….It turned into a national movement and some religious leaders began to see the possibility of jumping on the bandwagon…
Roe/Wade came along and enabled the right wing christian movement to wrap that into the anger equation. Prior to that time, none of the fundie churches gave a shit about abortion- it was exclusively a catholic issue.
we have a golden opportunity to offer an alternative - and the dems in congress aren’t doing it.
i don’t care about more dems any more - just give me better ones, even if that means less of them in the short term. because i think without a decent vision, more of the same is not going to cut it.
I agree with this post 100%, particularly the excellent points about ingrained Right-wing framing, the need for a long-term rectification plan, and the need for a grassroots effort to elect real progressives. All of it is 100% on target.
Where I would add to this discussion would be to point out that some of the symptoms described - the Democrat’s inability to respond, and the role of the Press - are not simple failings of incompetence or perception.
The Press is not simply negligent, incompetent, or “battered.” The press is complicit. The mainstream media is owned by the same war-profiteering corporations that perpetuate the occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan, and the press actively suppresses news that would hinder the Right. We’re having a clear demonstration of that right now. While willing to point out that gas prices and food prices are through the roof, the press makes no attempt to explain these phenomena - prices are simply higher, and gosh-golly no one is to blame.
If a Democrat were in the White House, the press would be inflamed with apocalyptic hysteria, blaming Democrats for everything. There would be outraged calls for public action to address these problems.
Instead the economy is burning while the press fiddles with trivia. That’s because the press is owned by the Right. One cannot analyze the current political environment without acknowledging the erosion of a true independent press.
Part of the reason that many Democrats fail to respond is that they are part of a self-protecting ruling class, and they work towards their own interests and not those of the nation. And I don’t mean this in a star-chamber conspiracy sort of way, I mean it in the very unconscious “why would I do THAT” sort of everyday fashion, wherein those accustomed to privilege and power simply internalize the policies and attitudes that benefit them, to the point where policies that would help the nation simply look ridiculous from their point of view. Certainly there are also those who are aggressively self-serving, and a few who are Republicans in Democratic clothing, but a lot of Democratic Congresspeople simply suffer from Beltway Blindness, and need to be removed from power because they are simply out of touch.
Bottom line:
If one wants to imitate the “success” of the conservative leadership. then one does not try to selll a package of programs but rather sniff out some things that people are already pissed off about and find a way to exploit em.
Christy - I’ve been “spending my money at home” and helping Eric Massa. He’s not going to be “my guy” but I figure anyone who can beat Randy Kuhl deserves help.
Excellent points all!
I think that’s a great idea. And I think spending time is as valuable, if not more so, for folks who are feeling left out of the donor process. I can remember all of the canvassing I did early on for the Kerry campaign and how great it felt to run into a couple of people on whose doors I knocked standing in line to vote with me for the election.
It really can make a huge difference. And if all of us put in some hours for candidates we really felt would do better than what we have, imagine the ripple of change that could get started nationwide…
Good Morning Christy and Firedogs -
Christy - thank you for the Let’s Get to Work ! reminder
far too much sniping and far too many ‘doom and gloom in November’ firepups - understandable but not acceptable
am set to work for a less than progressive but not Bush Dog dem - yeah, I would love to work to install one of you in Congress but for now he’s all we’ve got - housebound dfh’s with phones can do phonebanking - check out MoveOn, Progressive Dems, your local Dem HQ, etc. to see where you can help out
Truer words have never been written.

thank you until people REALLY get this w3e are doomed
Another important factor is the question of why the Right holds together better than the Left. The answer is plain and simple MONEY. It’s the glue that has kept the Right unified so long.
The profit motive is what supports the ability of the right to keep its various factions - the religious right, the anti-immigrant fearmongers, the hawks - all on message. At the top you have wealthy individuals willing to invest money in a propaganda infrastructure (”right-wing think-tanks”) to keep their movement unified, with the massive return on investment being highly profitable control of the machinery of government.
And it has worked. The Right has invested and every financial trend analysis of the past thirty years shows the rich getting richer and the rest of us suffering greenback anemia.
One of the big challenges of Progressivism is that we don’t have an equally immmediate and compelling unifying motive. Altruism is all well and good, but it’s not immediately profitable, and requires a thorough education in history and ethics (and these days, environmental science) in order to illustrate the benefits of the investments it calls for.
The Right will always be easily motivated by money and power - the Left is challenged to find as powerful a set of motivators with which to galvanize and unify its disparate elements…
You hit it right. Look at the heirarchy of the Dem. party(besides Dean, of course). A lot of them seem conservative type Dems. They seem more in it for the money & prestige then to make a difference. Take a guy like Ed Rendell. A DLC’er through and through. He thinks he can solve PA’s budget problems through legalized gambling. He used to be a pretty popular mayor here. No more. The state has basically ran all over the city to get the slot parlors built. And he has an ego the size of Manhattan. Did you see how often he was on TV the past six weeks. He’s so full of himself.
It appears that the gooper coalition is showing it’s age and crumbling a bit before our eyes…The religious right and the libertarian right are natural enemies in an unholy alliance..The “Country Club Republicans” just want to keep their taxes low and get lots of WEALTHY WELFARE checks from the government
The Right will always be easily motivated by money and power - the Left is challenged to find as powerful a set of motivators with which to galvanize and unify its disparate elements…

right now it seems to beFOOD ,SHELTER,and Gas
i post the salaries of the elite media all the time
i guess about 10 years or so ago
THE MULTI BILLIONAIRE plutocrats that run this countery ,got the idea,to give SOME MORSELS in the way of multimillion dollar salaries to the press,WORKED like a charm
THEY HAVE BEEN BOUGHT ,lock stock and barrel
It is just gorgeous here today — sun is shining, light breeze blowing the lingering fragrance of the last of my flowering plum blossoms in through the windows. Birdies are all over the feeders this morning, storing up for egg laying, I suppose. Gorgeous sunshine and not a cloud in the sky. May have to take The Peanut to the park this afternoon, if the weather holds — it’s too lovely to stay inside today.
Bravo!!!!
But, do the Rethugs hold together…really? For example, in the PA primary, only 791,205 Republicans voted (vs. 2,304,495 Dems); and of those, 27% voted for someone other than McCain. If they were going to “hold together”so well, wouldn’t that number have been very very small? I think the Rethugs are breaking apart, frankly. I think the socalled moderates are royally pissed off at what the right wing Cheney-ites have done to “their” party. I think a lot of the Evangelicals have woken up to the fact that they’ve been turned into warmongering anti-ecology oppressors AND they did not get what they were promised. I think as more and more sunshine is being directed to the corruption and destruction to the country that has come down from Cheney, Ashcroft, Rumsfeld, Rice, Gonzalez et al.(with Chimpy McFlightsuit along for the ride), a whole lot of people are asking themselves some hard questions.
I haven’t lived in a cold winter location for many years- but I remember one of the best parts of it—-the day you finally say “spring is here” and run outside in your shorts and tee shirt.
You have to remember … the Republicans had no reason to go to the polls Tuesday … there were very few contested races … if any at all
the new meme is that our GRASS ROOTS canidate, supported by 1.5 MILLION voters online,is that he is “wishy washy”,not strong and VIRILE……oh puke
Good Morning Christy and Firepups.
On behalf of all sane Canadians, I would like to apologize for David Frum … just goes to show (along with Harper and his Neocon playpals) that Canada is not perfect …
I think we’ve had quite enough of “strong and virile” candidates who are actually manipulative, sneaky, dishonest, craven jerks. “Strong and virile” means sometimes standing there and taking it, not striking out at people thousands of miles away who never did anything to you.
McBush leading both dem candidates by one point each in today’s national gallup polling. It’s WAY early, but this is a bit unnerving.
second your emotion
That would require both the press and the electorate thinking through long-term consequences of actions. And, some days, I despair of this ever happening on a large scale… SIGH
Anyone else needing a vacation from stupidity lately?
not really the man has been fed NERF BALLS ,since he threw his hat in ther ring, cept for the little blip, about MISS VICKY member her?
After Obama is officially anointed, groups of informed citizens will have to show up at these news outlets and counter all the dirt that will be dished out.
Vocal grassroots support will largely determine who will win their contests in November.
yea, gonna go watch the baby calf and her mom,in 10 minutes and plant the lavenender (bushes) the only good bushes i know
yup,….PITCHFORKS AND TORCHES
LOL !!!
((((( sadlyyes )))))
I agree rwcole. The “conservative movement” succeeded only because there was so much societal change post WWII and that equaled FEAR to a lot of whites in this country. Those racial and sexual changes are past history now (yes, I know we still need to go further on both counts) but the younger generations just accept a multi-polar world and aren’t afraid of it.
CHS said,“The sole reason the right’s message machine is failing is because their lies aren’t working any longer. Because people are too worried about affording necessities and keeping their jobs and their homes to shell out for some snake oil falsehoods on the side.”
This is it in a nutshell. The conservative ideology is just that “ideology.” It has FAILED at running govt. Politics has become the ends and the means for them, and 70% (and growing) of us can see that they don’t know how to actually “run” anything. It’s all falling apart around us and all they can say is things aren’t so bad. The conservative movement has failed US.
Josh Marshall had a post about this yesterday. Here’s a rather large quote from his post. He makes a lot of sense.
beam me up scotty!
Dems tend to do well during tough economic times, and sadly, we appear to have some of those ahead…
thanks…poor guy sold the herd, and these 2 are the last vestiges…(hay gone through the roof) …..sigh
I may have to go on another baking spree. I feel a batch of banana blueberry muffins coming on today if I can find the time. No idea why, maybe it’s the repetitive nature of it or the association of it with my grandmothers, but cooking really relaxes me.
Yes- that makes sense and all indicators point to a dem victory in the fall- but it’s not a good time to get overconfident.
Speaking on lies that aren’t working anymore. In my local dead tree paper, there was an article from the NYT. It covered McCain’s forgotten places tour. There was a line that St McCain is trying to market himself as a different kind of republican.
Christy - you know, I think something a lot of us on the left-hand side are sort of guilty of is that we think that anyone with two brain cells to rub together should recognize all of this stuff. That what is happening should be self-evident to anyone above the level of a houseplant, so we don’t get involved, we don’t talk back, we don’t argue with people about their BS. We want to be nice. We want to be liked. We don’t want to be “like them”. And the problem is, in my estimation..that because of that, they have been able to own the landscape for years and years so that their crap now sounds like some sort of common wisdom - very acceptable. WE MUST NOT GIVE AN INCH TO THESE PEOPLE. EVERY BS LINE MUST BE MET WITH A PUSH BACK.
Don’t forget that Presidents Dukakis and Kerry both had far larger leads in the polls at a comparable time in ‘88 and ‘04.
Oh wait a minute, that’s right, they LOST!
yes.
and a goat or two.
do it with humor,i usually drop some line with truth, and make it PALETABLE
Totally agree with the overconfidence part. Just because the conditions are perfect for a Dem victory doesn’t mean we have a lock.
I only mention it because the conservatives have had a pretty good run- and for years the left has looked over their shoulders to figure out what we should copy from their playbook……often we attribute their “success” to the wrong things. It’s exploiting fear and hatred that led to their success.
You have goats,we were talking about them earlier…ok gotta go …see yall
holy cow! i forgot to send you the vanilla!!!!
better tell scotty to leave me down here with the stupid. damn.
That’s okay — I had totally forgotten about it until just now. LOL
dmac - start here,
note the ‘visiting capitol hill’ link to the right of the post head
believe these folks also offer training, virtual and otherwise about campaigning - still googling that one
Arg, makeing me hungry! I’ve been having a mean tamale craving. gunna cook up a big batch this weekend.
Sorry, but I’m taking a break from writing to browse FDL … there are a couple of reasons why baking makes us feel good, I do it often with my kids. One thing is the fond memories, the other is that it is a creative and nourishing exercise, which allows your love to flow … kinda like positive affirmations or dancing …
BTW, when the kids were younger, we would bake and dance and we once baked a Chocolate Chip Cookie which was 14 inches in Diameter … a memorable mistake … *g*
I have much the same opinion. When I used to hear Rush, it was beyond me that he actually had those thoughts, much less that anyone would pay attention. Of course, I was in for a shock. Ive had the same thougts recently about Ingraham and Hannity. Hannity has run that Ayes and Wright stuff so much, he doesn’t have to do a program. Just same tracks over. And the Ingraham world view is nuts, in a word, but she seems to think she has the information and correct view on everything. Obviously, I am totally out of step, but something about those opinions is very powerful and catch on. If I sound in shock, I am. To hear some of their stuff is like listening to crazy people, but the majority? Wow.
btw, for those of you who are thinking, “god, this is a long, rambling post,” you’ll be happy to know that I cut an additional 573 words out of it before it went up this morning. *g*
I’m not sure that Rush/Hannity et al convince many people of anything. The people who are already predisposed to their drivel tune in and fire up the anger meter..
I don’t want to say that the media has no effect on people- but we’re so polarized currently that the true believers search out media that matches their beliefs rather than getting their beliefs from the media.
Not many in this country have changed their minds about much politically until LATELY- when the shrubbery pleasure machine started throwin rods and crankcase parts all over the landscape.
(((tw3k )))
All the snow has finally disappeared so I’m gonna be on point duty with the Barbecue this weekend … first order of duty is filling up the cooler with Belgian Brew … *g*
Maybe you should give us a footnote, so we get more of the story. :)
Sad, but true — until their own bottom lines were seriously impacted, most of America could have given a rat’s ass about the failures of the Bush Administration. It was “so long as it’s not in my back yard, I don’t give a shit” writ large for a whole lot of people, and damn the long-term consequences.
simple sign by FREEWAY BLOGGER thanks Scarlet
WAR IS EXPENSIVE……PEACE iS PRICELESS…now im gone
mmm Belgian beer. makes me think us pasta w/ mussels :)
Spring just poking out here too!
Unfortunately it is so…
Few, for example, give a shit about the torture issue or the warrantless wire taps issue. Doesn’t effect their daily lives and they figure it’s just dirty ol moslems who get effected.
Mooove along … *g*
Back to the manuscript for me … thanks Christy for the visions of Banana Blueberry Muffins … might have to whip up a mid week batch …
outline for your book? :)
And I got my bumper sticker yesterday for my Dem in the contest against imcumbent W clone, McCaul. The Dem is Doughty who was on FDL conversation about a week ago. He may have a chance; McCaul has been sort AWOL except when he was voting against things like Childrens Health care, etc. I will be glad to go door to door for this guy.
Just heard on the Weather Channel (of all places) that the airlines beginning with Delta are going to start raising fares unilaterally as much as 20% because of fuel prices. Have to wonder how that’s going to affect the economy, the travel industry (and my job). Damn.
Well when airlines get married- as they have frequently of late- it’s usually bad for fares.
Fortunately–many of their attempts to raise fares are unsuccesful- someone like Southwest comes along and undercuts the shit out of em and they go back to fare wars.
Wait and see.
I heard similar coverage earlier with the comment that travel is going to be harder in general, $$ + fewer flights, the whole thing, and more lines likely to go out of business. None of it sounded good. Sorry to say…

McCain dismisses equal pay legislation, says women need more ‘training and education.’»
Today, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) skipped the vote on the Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, which “restores the longstanding interpretation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act,” overturned last year by a 5-4 Supreme Court ruling. In New Orleans today, McCain explained his opposition to the bill by claiming it “opens us up to lawsuits for all kinds of problems.” Later in New Orleans, he added that instead of legislation allowing women to fight for equal pay, they simply need “education and training“:
“They need the education and training, particularly since more and more women are heads of their households, as much or more than anybody else,” McCain said. “And it’s hard for them to leave their families when they don’t have somebody to take care of them.
Oh Lord, now I’m really hungry … *g*
I made one of my ’snobby’ friends try Belgian Beer instead of wine with his sirloin and he was bowled over …
thanks for the ((love)) everyone, cuz lately i felt i was doing it in vain, like an excuse to be occupied and wasting my time, a few little blips on the radar screen here and there saying something there, but TODAY! wow, people were calling in right and left……it was wonderful.
so, just wanted to give christy and fdl some of it back…..
rw at 35–i like the day when the trees are still asleep on the outside, on the inside waking up, sap starting to flow, and sun is bright bright and it’s the first day warm enough to roll down the car windows, still have a vest or light coat on, and you can smell the earth thawing…..that’s the one that hits me deep.
thanks for the link cbl2! i need to go do my herbs, but will check it out later today.
and tw, i love tamales…..yum. make extra and invite friends over and show them your latest creatiive endeavor. nothing like a captive audience. : )

Seems that high priced beer is beating out high priced wine at least among the younger set. Sell yer vinyard stock!! BUY barley futures.
You forgot the rest of his statement at the end…”and, I am an idiot.”
i think this points to the larger cultural problems - that affect us all.
for several years now, i’ve thought it’s like we’re living in the middle of one of stanley milgram’s or phil zimbardo’s experiments. all the cultural forces and societal expectations encourage us to act in ways that are fundamentally contrary to our beliefs and our values. how we deal with that conflict varies, but i think denial and angry defensiveness are high on the list.
Up Up with Tamales- nature’s most nearly perfect food.
lol :) yeah, stomach is starting growl, can’t keep my mind on topic.
