41% of the vote in, 55% Clinton, 45% Obama.
Christy sends this:
After a six-week lull since the last Democratic primary, Pennsylvania voters were so eager to participate in the hotly contested battle between Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama that one in 10 voting in Tuesday’s primary had changed their party registration since the start of 2008 so they would be eligible to vote in the Democratic race. The contest was open only to registered Democrats. About half the party-switchers had been registered Republicans, while the rest had been unaffiliated with either party or were voting for the first time in Pennsylvania.
Most of those new Democrats were mobilized to come out for Obama, and they were nearly one-fifth of Obama’s supporters. Even the former Republicans favored Obama over Clinton, largely invalidating rumors that Republicans would vote strategically in the Democratic primary in support of Clinton, hoping she would be easier to defeat in November.
And Politico sez:
Don’t be fooled by early results. The cities and suburbs usually report their returns first, which gives the candidate favored in those areas a quick – and sometimes fleeting – lead. The conservative-leaning small towns through the center of the state usually filter in much later in the evening.
We’ve got to stop meeting like this.

Dammit. That’s what I get for not cheating.
John Harris was sure the early call for Hillary meant had a “substantial” lead, but he then again, he IS substandard.

Here is my much-awaited Pittsburgh-on-the-ground update:
On my way to Drinking Liberally, there were a bunch of kids on the corner, jumping up and down and waving Obama signs. The bus driver beeped at them.
That’s it, that’s my whole update.

Well, our waitress recounted what happened to her in 2004 when she was in college and all excited about voting for the first time:
There was some group on campus circulating this petition that was supposedly to legalize marijuana, and required the signers’ school and home addresses.
Next thing she knows, they’ve all been registered to vote in their home towns instead of on campus.
Now I want to contribute $5.00 to Hillary because Timmeh made fun of the idea….
ummmm – I’m more in favor of ignoring his Russert ass altogether.
Over the course of his long and indistinguished career, it seems to me that Timmeh has more than earned universal disdain, and the refusal to take anything he says as…… meaningful.
He’s a hired tool
She did win and her camp’s new meme today was, a win is a win
yup … one of the ways she’s disqualified herself. It’s sad …
Anecdotal, of course, but I really don’t see any Clinton signs or supporters here.

I only know one thing. I want every one of the sorry *assed Neocons in our government gone by 1/20/09….
That is what I want. That is what the world wants.
A primary contest is not going to rock my world…one way or the other.
McCain must not win in November. Period. If it takes HRC…so be it…Obama…so be it…
But I want what is toxic in our country gone…purged…forever.
So Joe Scarborough and Keith or Candy Crowley in HD
Or just turn off the TV
Nothin’ wrong with slow. I should know. *g*
hmm interesting. Guess we just have to wait it out.
I get so tired … throughout the whole primary bit … of the constantly changing goalposts. For each state, it’s who wins what delegates and that should be it – no matter who it goes to.
Change the whole thing for next time if you want but these continuous new stories from the pundits of what counts or doesn’t count or whathaveyou makes me nuts. Of course, it all makes them big bucks.

Electing Hillary Clinton is not a victory for progressives.
Well she is entitled to her opinion but I’m staunchly anti-war and the fact that she even put that on the table is a deal breaker for me. add to that the blamket protection for UAE and some other countries, a broken military and her failure to dismiss the hypothetical by saying that the premise of the hypothetical is bullshit because the NIE states the contrary…well chica is not getting any of my money.

Anyone who wont vote for whoever the dem candidate is, doesn’t give a shit about this country. You might as well vote for McCain. There is just too damn much riding on this election to take that stand. The SCOTUS that another republic would put in place would set this country back two hundred years. It is no time to protest with a non vote. IMO.
huh? he’ll get the nomination. the dems do not want to lose another generation of voters like they did with the civil rights movement. It would be suicide for the party
If Obama is not the nominee then we will not win a presidential race for a generation or more. We will have lost the black vote and the youth. They will think they have been robbed. We cannot do that. period.

She’s been taking a bit too much from the GOP playbook for my taste. Seems like she’s trying too hard to look like a tough guy.
Nevertheless I will vote for her in November becuase the alternative is just unspeakable.
No, that is not really true. If she wins this, she wins it, but there is still a long ways to go.
It is still HRC that must win 60% of each of the contests from PA forward to win the nomination – unless the delegates all fall her way. It could happen…anything can happen. Anything. Anything.
We will see.
What a comedian. You see it isn’t about dice. It’s about delegates.

I don’t understand why that’s so difficult for some to understand.
Black people have NEVER had a Presidential candidate they could identify with. Oh, Kennedy made them like him, but they’ve never had anyone who was one of them. Now, they do. Hell, I’m as caucasian as they come and if Hillary is the nominee, by crook (because only a crooked deal could land her the nomination), I’m not voting. There is virtually no difference between George W. Bush and Hillary Clinton.

She voted to authorize, so yes, she did.
I have mute on the TV, but when the closed captioning showed the words “a commander in chief who will bring our troops home from Iraq” my irony meter pegged at 3.5 million decibels. Yeah Madame Senator. Who facilitated their having to go to Iraq in the first place?
Okay, I’m being goofy…but SO? Here’s the current results.
CLINTON, HILLARY (DEM) 582,933 52.8%
OBAMA, BARACK (DEM) 520,256 47.2%
Republican Primary
Candidate Votes Percent
HUCKABEE, MIKE (REP) 31,675 11.4%
MCCAIN, JOHN (REP) 201,262 72.7%
PAUL, RON (REP) 43,85% 15.8%
So either Obama or Clinton has well over twice the numbers of the ostensible Republican nominee. That nominee, despite having all opponents officially withdraw has almost 1/4 in the Primary casting “protest” votes.
Exit polls suggest that “perhaps” 25% of the Democratic loser in the nomination may “jump”. That means 75% of their supporters would support the nominee. McCain would get 340,000 [201K = 140K] vs. Obama at 840,000. What are people getting all paranoid about????
Do the math…those are outstanding odds that I would take!
i have NO idea! I already felt very strongly about this but after the visits from Erdla and the other posters from GG, I feel nauseous. It should never be easy for a politician to talk about entering into war, let alone nukes. Diplomacy is off the table? Doesn’t exist anymore? that is why i got up this morning and did the GOTV calls. I can’t in good conscience let her breeze through to the nomination.

That really doesn’t sound like it will translate into much of a delegate pickup, but I guess it could end up better with the way PA allocates delegates on a district-by-district basis.
Love that show – lots of laughs.
Yes, I read that.
Why would they FEEL a nomination was stolen if it was gotten via legitimate rules in the party?
I’m’ guessing that, if Clinton had more pledged delegates and the popular vote but superdelegates felt that Obama was more likely to beat McCain so made him the nominee, they would not feel it was stolen from Clinton but that rules were followed.
Reminds me of how the Obama camp is about the will of voters and not rules when it comes to the superdelegates but is not about the will of voters and is about party rules when it comes to Florida and Michigan.
At any rate, adult behavior and no temper tantrums might be better.
Just a question. In the climate they passed that resolution allowing bush to go into Iraq does anyone think Barack would have risked being calling a traitor as were all those who didn’t vote for it? Just asking…. It was a different time when that resolution was passed. Disclaimer: I was never for the war, I was part of the million people protesting in the street being called a traitor.

as president, whomever it is, if iran bombs israel, we have binding treaties with israel to defend israel……that’s a fact. that’s a reality.
Obama up
teehee you always make me laugh (even when I don’t want to) ((Petro))
I just walked through the kitchen to change the CD’s and low and behold… there’s Anderson Cooper. *shudders*
Assuming Obama wins the pledged delegate race, are you advocating for the superdelegates to ignore that factor and vote in such a way that Senator Clinton wins the nomination?
just saw that … astonishing since they endorsed her
is anyone doing any delegate projections yet?
Our party leaders (particularly if the sit on the Senate Intelligence or Armed Forces Committees) should read the current National Intelligence Estimates on Iran. The Intelliegence Community was unanimous in stating that IRAN has not been developing or trying to obtain nuclear weapons technology for the last FIVE YEARS!
If I recall correctly, NOT reading the NIE by those that had them available to them in the run up to the IRAQ war essentially allowed the Bush/Cheney cabal to push through a resolution that has led to 4000 US service-members dead, tens of thousands wounded and permanently disabled, hundreds of thousands of Iraqis killed and maimed, and our country deep in debt. Reading the NIE would have shown that Bush was untrustworthy and exaggerating the threat. Some Senators trusted Bush…even failing to vote for limits on the Iraq War Resolution pushed by the Democratic Leadership in the Senate. They TRUSTED BUSH!
In High School if you don’t do assigned readings you can flunk the test. But the only person that gets the “F” is the naughty student. In this case it had a little larger consequences.
Now another NIE is being ignored…and one candidate is beating the war-drums. Makes me want to vomit a little bit in my mouth thinking that I may have to vote for that candidate.
It seems that the “hometown” paper is ready for Hill to bail. (How many hometowns does she have anyway?)
Well, folks, I’m disappointed, but I guess it was dumb to think it would come out the other way. I’ve lived at both ends of Pennsylvania, though not for a long time, but my mother’s family is from small town Pa. Guess I should’ve known better.
BTW, tho a minor point–Buckis County is not the “Mainline.” It’s northeast of Phila, along the Delaware River, across from NJ. It was still mostly rural, tho’ rapidly developing, when I lived there in the late 70’s.
“Mainline” refers to the main line of the old Pennsylvania RR- goes west of Phillly–Devon, Wynnewood, Bryn Mawr..those old towns.
Another piece of trivia brought to you by a brain full of useless info.
ROFL
Is he wearing turquoise also?
I only got bits & pieces as I occasionally glanced at the closed captioning while at Drinking Liberally, but I did see one discussion about, yes, how Obama was at a disadvantage because he hadn’t been sufficiently vetted, and thus all this Wright/Rezko/flag pin stuff was coming out of the woodwork.
Yeah, that sure has had a huge negative impact, all right.
I jest?
Not at all. I’m sure that if that were the situation, Obama’s supporters would say that it is within the rules of the Democratic party that the superdelegates will make the decision if neither candidates achieves the full 2025 delegates required to seal the nomination. I think they would also say that they were doing what they felt was best for the health and strength of the party based on who they genuinely felt had the greater chance to win the General election.
Yes, I’m certain that is what they’d say, and I am not jesting.
Hah! That’s excellent.
…on the teevee, not in my kitchen
;~P
forgot link to Kos
yep, I’m slowly making my way through it.
but Obama is up now, so on pause it goes
critters who live under bridges should not be given nourishment. :)
yeah – both ankles – both sides. I tend to not exercise at all during the winter – it’s coming though, and I’ll be absolutely ripped in about 3 weeks. (I just re-read that, and it sounds wrong, but muscle-memory is a very real thing).
I add salt to nothing. Don’t even know where the salt-shaker is. Does that mean my kidney’s are fucked up?
fwiw, I *am* starting to pay a bit of attention to this….
No.
But, that’s only if Iran launches a nuclear attack against Israel. So, what I want to know is, what would she do if Israel lanched a nuclear attack against Iran, which is much more likely given that:
– Israel has nukes, and per the NIE Iran no longer even has a program to develop them.
– Israel’s supporters in the U.S. are continually pushing for a preemptive strike against Iran.
Seems to me that fair is fair. Justice is symmetric. Iranian lives are every bit as precious as those of Israelis. But I think that Hillary is paid not to agree.
I would love to see Being Wrong become a bad thing, and Being Wrong All The Time something that makes you stigmatized and ridiculed.
What purpose, if any, do you think the superdelegates have?
Although I’ve never seen Christy, Turquoise would be very good on a Redhead (She really is a Redhead, right?)
you and me both hence I will be phone banking into Indiana tomorrow and sending O a little something extra. If she wants to drag this out, may have to bankrupt her campaign
very cute.
Hillary needed at least a 10 point margin, pretty great showing for Obama considering the recent smear attacks
Me too and well stated.
blech.
Wigwam … very good question.
What purpose, if any, do you think the superdelegates have? Apparently none.
DrBong, either you gotta cut back on the good stuff or start locking the back door.
(whatever you do, wash anything he eats out of twice…)
she sure is!
Hey, big hug to you.
Purple Tie … and he will be the Coolest Leader evvah !!!
very much a red head.
goddammit – EPU’d again.
No. The U.S. has no mutual defense treaties with Israel. Israel has never defined it’s borders and therefore cannot enter in defensive treaties.
hmm – shoot me an email at the addy above – we’ll talk
ding!
now on to the umbrella question…
will we, under President Clinton’s Umbrella policy, protect Iranians from an Israeli nuke attack?
No one’s nukin’ anyone.
People need to calm down.
With about 60% reporting, it looks like:
Clinton: 53.3%
Obama: 46.7%
difference: 6.6 margin
well below what the Clinton camp had hoped for.
In the Republic group:
HUCKABEE: 11.6%
MCCAIN: 72.2%
PAUL: 16.2%
27.8% not voting for McCain.
This 28% number keeps coming up; apparently the percentage of people in any given group
that have no fucking clue.
28% of your neighbors.
28% of your city.
28% of your county.
28% of your state.
28% of your country.
Good luck to us all…
A very wise friend/relative of mine advised…”don’t let the pundits get into your head.’
Seems like excellent advise in retrospect….because that is what they want to do..they want to influence our thinking…that is what they are hired to do. Hellloooooo….I know that is not new news…but still….
Are you honestly trying to suggest either of them would sit on their hands if Israel were attacked. We all know better.
thanks so much for the advice.
I feel better.
felix–you sure about that? sovereignty i believe is mentioned. other slippery terms, too. all mean the same thing.

jayt. good! it could be something so simple that you’re gonna feel reaaaaaaal stoopid for not going…….
i had to go today and again tomorrow, just like oil changes and tires for your car, and adding air to the tires, you gotta do stuff to keep the car running smooth……and so it will last a long time…it your car has a ’tink’ you take it in don’t you? and do checkups to see if anything else is goin; on, same as the doctor, if you wait long enough, the list is long for repairs, so get checked and go regularly to keep your ’engine’ runnin’ smooth…doctors are body mechanics…..a good doctor is as precious as a gifted mechanic in my book. i’m lucky to have both.
That does sound like good advice…but after four days of wind (and dust and pollen and cat dander) last week, if they can empty out my goddamn sinuses I’d even let the pundits in.

Jayt, you’ve got this patient stuff turned around – the docs are the ones who make you wait. Where’s the email?
/s
Actually, they might.
But Hillary has not only claimed that she has the right to influence Superdelegates but that according to the rules NO delegate is legally bound to the candidate that they actually ran as representing.
Essentially she is saying that she is hinting is perfectly acceptable to deny the right of the voters to elect those that will abide by their promises to be loyal to the will of the voters. She’s basically suggested it’s within the rules to not only “poach” regularly elected delegates, but to even PLANT THEM! After all, there’s nothing in the RULES that forbid it.
Yet this is the same Hillary Clinton who believes that Richardson, who stated he had not committed to any candidate, was considered “disloyal” to the Clintons for endorsing Obama. Sheesh!
Superdelegates are certainly given broad latitude in who they select for the ultimate nominee. Theoretically they could vote for the candidate they want to lose in the election…if they were bought off by the Republicans (Lieberman might be doing just that if he were still in the Party). But it’s also perfectly within the rights of Democrats to indicate the perils to the Party in voting for a candidate that neither leads in popular or delegate count, who may endanger the longterm future of Party growth, and whose votes will “appear” to be counter to the outcome of a long Primary process.
The Super Delegates should be able to enunciate good reasons WHY they are voting contrary to the outcomes of the established Primary system…why they need to abort the results of that. Or, YEAH, people who followed the rules, will be pissed. AND they could lose their support.
K’pitsch?
I don’t think the superdelegates-tipping-the-nomination scenario is going to happen, but if it *did*… Pyrrhic victory, anyone?
No. But the U.S. does not have a mutual defense treaty with Israel. Period. And depending who is in the Oval Office maybe, maybe not.
Yes, Reddhead has a terrific set of turquoise jewelry and it is beautiful with her hair.
IANAL but it is my understanding that a country must defined and internationally recognized borders in order to enter into defensive treaties.
dude – all of a sudden, I can’t find you e-mail
Please?
Sigh. Kirk, ya could stayed in the nice fungus lab and had a PhD and all your subjects would just stayed in Petri dishes (well, until you ran them through the ultracentrifuge and put their nucleic acids through gel chromotography…)
But nooooo – you had to go work with uppity people, you bonehead.
