As if we didn’t already know that there were scads of lobbyists on the McCain campaign payroll — and some not even on the payroll, just hanging with the candidate, giving advice and reaping the rewards of proximity to potential power and Commerce and Armed Service Committee connections and doing "a lot of his work by telephone from McCain’s Straight Talk Express bus." (Hello, Charlie Black.)
Given that questions have already been raised about potential deals and connections from the past with some of McCain’s lobbyist cronies and their interested clients, you’d think some attention would have been given to image and PR damage control. Turns out sucking in whatever money can be hoovered into the McCain campaign coffers is more important.
Thanks to some reportage on the biggest donors and bundlers for the McCain campaign, we now have even more names to look into. And — voila — it’s official: the McCain campaign, now with even more lobbyists! (Via NYTimes)
But an examination by The New York Times of a list of 106 elite fund-raisers who have brought in more than $100,000 each for Mr. McCain found that about a sixth of them were lobbyists. The list of “bundlers” was released on Friday by the McCain campaign.
The sizable number of lobbyists, who are outnumbered on the list only by those working in the financial services industry, offers another example of the balancing act that Mr. McCain, the presumptive Republican nominee, is having to strike as he campaigns for the presidency and seeks to maintain his reputation as a reformer….
But the potential for conflicts of interest are obvious. Several of Mr. McCain’s top fund-raisers, for example, lobby for the telecommunications industry, which regularly does business before the Senate Commerce Committee, where Mr. McCain is a senior member and once served as chairman.
Kirk Blalock, of the lobbying firm Fierce, Isakowitz & Blalock, leads Mr. McCain’s young professional group and has raised over $250,000 for him; his clients include Sprint Nextel and Viacom.
Kyle McSlarrow, chief of the National Cable and Telecommunications Association, the lobbying arm for the cable industry, has raised over $100,000 for Mr. McCain. He and others in the cable industry recently butted heads with Mr. McCain over a proposal that would allow customers to pick and choose which channels they received.
In an interview Sunday, Wayne Berman, who is deputy finance chairman of the McCain campaign and a veteran lobbyist whose clients include Verizon and Verizon Wireless, dismissed the notion that some lobbyists might be raising money for Mr. McCain to curry influence…. (emphasis mine)
And then Wayne Berman’s pants burst into flames.
Why, oh why, does the McCain campaign keep sending out lobbyists as ethics mouthpieces on lobbyist conflict of interest questions and to shore up McCain’s "outsider" credentials? Either they don’t have anyone else — or they really are that stupid.
The NYTimes could also say "Wayne Berman, of the McCain campaign and lobbyist for ChevronTexaco, and chairman of Federalist Lobbying as well as an insurance broker." Or "friend of Tom DeLay?" Or how about "AmeriQuest lobbyist Wayne Berman, whose client had interests before the Commerce Committee of which McCain was chairman." Wouldn’t that be informative for the public to dig further into at some point before November?
And that’s just one more person on the list. Imagine what we’ll find as we keep going. (Ask, and ye shall appear…)

So, Christy!
NOw here’s an issue with some teeth!
Here’s the thing. He made the press BBQ. And he gives them unfettered access, and never says “Can’t I just eat my waffle?”
So these lobbyists? Nothing to see here. They are just the “experts” that he needs to have around. That’s all. There isn’t undue influence or anything like that.
Gah, I hate the media.
I got a fundraising letter from Carville a couple of days ago. I MIGHT have considered writing a check, if they were attacking McThueselah. Since they aren’t, I’ll contribute directly to the democrat who is going to take over Larry Craig’s seat.
Morning all! How’s tricks?
, (above)
…will be testifying today on Net Neutrality
(h/t Selise)
The DNC just put out its first ad against McCain. They decided they weren’t going to wait for the candidates to get off their behinds…so that’s something at least.
Oh — and I just saw a whine about access to Dem candidates — specifically Obama — from one of the Time reporters covering the campaign. And he was all over the “McCain gives us access” whinging…
good catch!
i’m listening to the hearing now via the committee website.
OT:
Not to start any uprising but thought this was pretty newsworthy:
Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, told Chris Cuomo on GMA this morning that should Iran attack Israel with nuclear weapons, “I want the Iranians to know that if I’m the president, we will attack Iran…In the next 10 years, during which they might foolishly consider launching an attack on Israel, we would be able to totally obliterate them.”
Wow. I am speechless.
Mornin’ Christy and Firedogs -
a sixth ?!?!?
wonder how NYT defined lobbyist
Here it is — knew I’d seen that recently…the “access whinging” from Jay Newton-Small.
Based on my read through of the names and my search on them thus far, I think they meant lobbyist solely as a “person employed to lobby” at some point. Which is not to say that there aren’t plenty of other folks on that list who work in businesses that employee their own lobbyists — because there are a LOT of those folks, too.
Marcy is all over this over at EW. I haven’t gotten to the post yet, but she’s there.
Morning Miss Christy. I received an email from Bob Wexler – his opponent is pledging a million dollars to beat him because he’s putting impeachment on the table. He’s asking for money. Are we going to do a fundraiser for him?
Because they know, with our current crop of media, theh can have it both ways. They can get lobbyist money and say that they are against lobbyist money and nobody but the DFH’s will call them on it.
No idea, but you can suggest it to Howie if you like…
Bet that comment gets her a significant BOOST in the polls. But it shows a lack of understanding of the situtation. Iran will not directly attack Israel. They will use proxies, like Hamas and Hezbollah, should they so choose.
What will she do then?
Boxturtle (bet Hezbollah is scared to death she might call them “terrorists” in retaliation)
I loved this from the comments threads over at Time:
Jay:
Maybe Obama should hold a waffleQue at his house. Would that make you feel better?
707
She knows it too, which is the point of her comment.
link for finding Howie?
What about her proclamation in the fall debate about not answering or telegraphing foreign policy “hypotheticals”? I guess since it might boost her in the polls she can say or do anything, right?

“McTheuselah”
707! Hope this one gains wide usage also!

Greg Palast reported this weekend on the radio that McSame has received $1.5 million donations in the last month from Big Oil which is more than both Democratic candidates have received individually in total.
So Big Oil knows who will keep their obscene profits flowing.

No, she won’t. Everyone cool down.
hey …McCrony ….hehehehehe
To be fair, though, Obama has also telegraphed similar thoughts. As has McCain. Although Obama has apparently disagreed with using the word “obliterate,” preferring instead “forceful and swift response.” Teh Google — useful little tool.
Oh, ok, I’ve been saying this for a year but since you say it won’t happen . . .

OT: Just had a call from a friend in Pittsburgh. He says he and his son went to vote and there were people out front telling everyone to vote for Hillary. I told him to call the police and call Bob Casey’s office and report the polling station as well as a description of the offenders.
A little more diplomatic, but he also neglects that a direct attack by Iran simply is not their plan.
Boxturtle (But simplistic statements get the poll boost)
let’s not forget mccain’s buddies the former fec chair and another former fec commmitee member.
Can we please not have a rehash of yesterday’s “my candidate is too awesome and yours suxors” sniping? Is that too much to ask? (Apparently so, but I needed to get that out early in the day…)
Tubes Bridge to nowhere Stevens is showing his intimate knowledge at commers right now./s
and the beat goes on
You can stand within so many feet of a polling place here in WV and in PA as well. So long as they were outside of the distance requirement, it is likely not anything illegal. Everyone please take a deep breath, it’s a primary, not the end of the freaking world.
I don’t have “a candidate”.
oh i did not know that…thanks
And yet, I believe you got my point nonetheless? It’s going to be a long day waiting for results — lets not make it even longer by having a snipe-a-thon, eh?
Mike Luckovich in today’s Atlanta Journal Constitution.
Commerce linky http://commerce.senate.gov/pub…..gs.ByMonth
But…but…but….McBush DOES suck!
Boxturtle (Christy, has anybody ever talked to you about herding cats?)
Nah, won’t happen.
It’s campaign talk. If asked, should a presidential candidate basically say to Iran, “you attack Israel, we’ll leave you alone”?
Maybe the problem is with the question – again!
Information on election process can be found on the Board of Election or the Secretary of State website on the various states.
In AZ, you have to be outside the 75 foot line from the door of a polling place. We post signs when it is possible to identify that 75ft line.
Went the same way everything does with her, like giving McCain big, wet, full-tongued verbal kisses one minute by insinuating McCain and she is more qualified to be President than Obama, and then jumping on Obama when he says anything not insulting about McCain during his campaign as disloyal to his party and stupid. She thinks that’s good campaigning and it is good lawyering. However, she seems to think we won’t notice that she is directly contradicting what she said just “yesterday” (so to speak) and I consider that an insult to my intelligence. What makes her think I won’t notice that I’m being played like a violin?
did you guys and gals see this
Another proud legacy of the Bush administration, news you’d probably expect to hear from developing nations, not the United States of America in the year 2008. This is the kind of news that should make people bitter, very bitter:
For the first time since the Spanish influenza of 1918, life expectancy is falling for a significant number of American women.
In nearly 1,000 counties that together are home to about 12 percent of the nation’s women, life expectancy is now shorter than it was in the early 1980s, according to a study published today.
I am forbidden to respond but you just go ahead.
Maybe we can talk about the 385,000 mentally retarded Vietnam Vets that seemed so interesting last night.
Just did. Thanks, dmac.
hey ,hey didja Know…Israel has the 3rd biggest NUCLEAR arsenal ,all their very own…just sayin
I give up. You guys just snipe away…
bye redd
But Obama did not previously proclaim the importance of not answering Foriegn Policy Hypotheticals. Now all of a sudden it is acceptable? To me that is the bigger point.
Didn’t say I was leaving. But if everyone just wants to snipe, than who am I to wish for productive discussion or something that pushes things forward. Clearly, a slap fight over nothing any of us can really change for the day while we sit around waiting for primary results is what folks want…so have at it.
Thanx for the link to the previous post on the Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. I’m on it.
I meant me.
I think it is time for a walk….. and then back to work….
Ooooooooooo, I so badly want to respond to this, but it really would fall under the category of sniping.
drat!
CHS – thanks to the link to the ad DNC is launching against McTheuselah.
My funds this month have already gone to Larry LaRocco, the Democrat who is going to restore Idaho’s dignity by taking over Larry toe tappin’ Craig’s senate seat, but if the DNC keeps that up, they might get some coin.
Huh?
Right, which is why this is a nonissue.
Is it too early for a nap?
Never.
“Is it too early for a nap?”
Better let the Peanut weigh in before you decide!
It’s never too early for a nap.
At this point in the campain, I’m of the opinion that it’s never too early for a drink.
McCain’s reputation as a reformer is as phony as Bush’s reputation as a Christian.
i had a thought for a commercial…how about …start with an orange on the table…flash price of 1.00,then a milk carton,4.00,than rice grains, (trippled in price) than a picture of McGiggolos barbecue party, and and ask him how come middle class folks are left out of the party
or a song . . . how’s that one go? Dum dum dedum, ‘my words but a whisper, your deafness a shout.’
I believe all states have such regulations about proximity to the voting booths by advocates. Had them in IN and now have them in AZ. Surprising anyone who has voted for any length of time wouldn’t know that.
Concerning the lobbyist theme, a faint ray of hope appears. From the SCOUTS blog:
http://www.scotusblog.com/wp/n…..ers/print/
I think it’s time to blow bubbles in the sun.
For me and my dog.;)
My version of this question is ‘Can we declare it four o’clock and go home?’
[You think this is bad? soc.genealogy.medieval has a running battle with a) posters who habitually ignore the date range for the group (usually cross-posted to at least three groups);
b) posters who routinely post irrelevant comments (usually cross-posted to at least three groups);
c) an in-house flame war between one group of posters and another, the first one being bent on demonstrating that the second is not only wrong, but also ignorant and bad-mannered; the second is generally far more polite.
Being majorly rude is part of all three, and it looks like four-year-old kids running off at the mouth sometimes.]
Well, that IS interesting, isn’t it? Thanks much for that link…
Why does that sound like an episode of The Big Bang Theory?!?
Gee, Christy, you’re sounding more and more like Obama everyday! I believe what you just said is his point exactly, but his is on a much wider scale!
and ironically, is one of the 3 foundations of the McRib cult (the other 2 being War Hero and Tousling Their Hair or is it ‘Pull My Finger’ ?
3 Foundations
A few years ago, when baseball players went on strike, a very funny radio comic in Boston did an hilarious piece on “saving the baseball players.” It was scripted and produced to sound like a “Save the Children” ad, and urged people to donate money each month to keep a baseball player living the the lifestyle to which he had become, only instead of the monthly amount being $15, it was something like $190,233 – some huge amount. It was a scream, and really illustrated the greed and ridiculousness of these overpaid game players (don’t get me wrong, I’m a big ol’ Red Sox fan, but they ARE way overpaid).
What if the DNC put such an ad out, a “Save the Billionaires/oil execs/hedge fund managers – Vote McCain”?
I think it’d work, and it’d be something new.
hey – can anyone point me to where Paul Lukasiak blogs ???

Here’s a novel thought too….professional politicians (Bush, McCain, Clinton, Obama) I like Obama, because he SEEMS to get that he is one lucky SOB. Clinton and the rest could learn this one lesson.
That they are priveledged, not US for getting to choose them, they are priveledged to be part of the elite, be paid to govern and be the boss of bosses, priveledged to be able to NOT work back breaking jobs, day in and out, with NO pay, no advancement, not even enough to put a roof over your head and food on the table. THEY get health care, they get to be stars.
I want to start hearing a little humility out of these bastards, instead of the arrogant “you NEED me…!” crapola.
Good morning Christy, Claire McCaskill on cspan2 talking about Lilly Ledbetter now. Does anyone know when Kerry’s committee will be meeting today?
I was stunned when Chris Matthews did not even bring up McCains connections to lobbyist during his interview with McCain at Villa Nova. Not only did Chris Matthews not ask any questions about this issue he allowed Senator McCain to get away with repeating unsubstantiated claims about Iran once again. Did not question him when he said that there is “overwhelming evidence” that Iran is pursuing a nuclear weapons program. Come on Matthews do your fucking job! Ask where is the evidence. How about asking why McCain and so many others are denying the NIE National INtelligence Estimate, and Mr. El Baradei of the Iaea’s statments about Iran.
Listen to the whole one hour with McCain you will hear for yourselves Matthews willingness to allow McCain to beat on the war drums and repeat unsubstantiated claims about Iran.
Hardball yeah right! It looked like Matthews wanted to hung McCain or he wants to go to McCains next barbecue for the MSM. (obviously Matthews has all ready been smoked by McCain.
Can’t wait to watch an interview of Matthews with Clinton!
http://hardblogger.msnbc.msn.c…..96574.aspx
Then this past Sunday George Stephanapolous provided another stage for McCain to repeat these unsubstantiated claims about Iran. In fact Stephonapolous threw some of his own false claims about Iran. Hey why didn’t George ask McCain why he did not have a flag pin on. George did not ask McCain any questions about his relationship with a particular lobbyist. I mean if you are going to ask Obama endlessly repeated horseshit why not ask McCain. It was as if McCain was running the interview. At one point McCain said to George “go ahead” Giving him permission to speak
Watch and listen for yourselves. Some of the more critical statements in these interviews seemed to slip through the cracks.
Watch George interview John..or watch McCain lead an interview
http://abcnews.go.com/thisweek
Lots of “bomb bomb bomb bomb bomb Iran” inferences in both of these interviews with McCain and no mention of lobbyist.
Harball yeah right!
is humor and snark “off the table”?
started at 10am, see my comment @8
Good info, but are they also going to take a look at Obama’s bundlers/lobbyists?
Christy – Here are two items that people might want to know:
An article from the NYT regarding real estate development Don Diamond and his connections with McCain and the favors McCain has done for him over the years. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/…..97955.html
An article from the LA Times regarding McCain’s Navy pension – he’s getting 100% disability payments. http://www.latimes.com/news/na…..?track=rss

Only thing Bush has ever actually earned.
Sadly, yes.
Get it?
Is this post on point?
thanks dmac!
y’all have a FDL Day
McSame is getting 100% disability from the Navy??? I know someone who is getting 100% disability. He was doing some odd jobs. He did not want it to be known that he could get any additional money for jobs as it might compromise his disability pay. He was not in the Navy.
So do we need a 100% disabled person to be the president? How is he able to hold the highest job in the land if he is so disabled? Just wondering.
It is OK if McCain has his campaign run by lobbyists, he is too much of a straight shooter for it to curry favor with him!
Evil POS.
Good Morning Christy and Pups.
I’ve just been watching some disturbing ads. OT, I know, but fwiw, I have to share.
Amnesty International is trying to shock [the U.S.?] into our senses re the raw brutality of torture tactics our country has been using. I say good for them. We simply HAVE to stop those responsible for these hideous acts.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/medi…..umanrights
Since the point is to refute the McCain myth of him as the “straight talker, campaign finance reformer, anti-lobbyist, friend of the average person” then, yeah, it is very much on point.
Sounds like you are referring to the Clinton(s) myth. I think there are much more effective ways to attack McCain.

Completely OT- has anyone heard from tommy yum recently, or how Esten is doing? I’ll be going back to Charlotte NC on business later this week, which I guess brought them to mind…
If the campaigns or anyone else is looking for dirt on McCain, I would suggest going directly to our AZ muckraking paper, the New Times. The reason I mention New Times is that you mentioned Diamond, and I am certain I remember reading an article in the New Times years ago on McCain’s ties to Diamond. BTW, I just read TPM on that same subject. I’m going to check out “the Google” to see if New Times has a website with access to their archives right now.
Just for curiousity sake, where the hell do you get Clinton talking points out of a post refuting the TradMed/McCain myth?
I am still stunned that it is that high.

Our close and dear neighbors who swore never never could they vote for [someone of color] – for reasons undoubtedly related to upbringing promoting irrational mistrust and fear – are now planning to vote for Obama.

Did the nation need FDR? Most people were never even aware that he was unable to walk due to polio. He had a serious disability, probably more serious than McBush’s. I don’t like McBush, but I don’t think his disability is his problem, except of course for a touch of dementia, which has gone undetected by the doctors and the press, of course.

I saw part of that ‘interview’ as well, and it reminded me of something.
That McCain’s whole candidacy is a joke.
All he’s got is former POW status, and that’s it.
Which, by the by, he sprinkled into this interview when healthcare was brought up.
When the bright lights get turned on him this summer, he’s gonna melt down like witch in The Wizard of Oz because of his temper — he can’t control it.
All someone has to do is ask a legitimate question that he doesn’t want to answer — and someone eventually will, maybe even over BBQ — and thar he’ll blow, hopefully in front of the cameras.
Also, in case Tom is reading (or backreading) here, my close friend Tubadude, now having finally landed a steady job as a music director in Upland CA, wanted me to ask “how’s tricks?” ;-)
lessig up now – testifying before the senate commerce committee.
he rocks!
Thus we see the hand of George H.W. Bush helping his good friend Bill Clinton. Try to act suprised when Hillary wins by a larger than expected margin.
It sounds like a case for this link from Digby

That was fun, wasn’t it?
I was referring to your explanation as to why the post was on point. As to my query concerning whether the post is on point, I have always regarded the Clintons as more potentially adverse to the future of the USA and the Democratic party than McCain and the company he keeps. See, e.g., the Clintons support of the Communications Act of 1996 and their BET buddy.
McCain can surely be beaten if the Clintons do not mess it up.
I am still more worried today about the Clintons trying to jam Obama on a VP slot for themselves and forcing Obama to reject them, which he must. Hence, my query as to whether the post is on point
I watched both of our candidates final campaign events last night and thought they were both terrific. We are lucky to have two strong candidates. I am proud of both of them.
Hey Raven. U still here?
Still emitting sparks eh. Sometimes ya just gotta. Redd’s been know to do that…
*ducks*
Just caught (in passing) some guy named from the city of Philadelphia claiming that campaigns are poor indicators of “working or not working” voting machines. Poo-poohed the whole thing, basically saying the campaign is wrong/incorrect.
Hmmmm…. well, it’s going to be interesting to see how the numbers in those districts (primarily African-American) come out tonight.
Sorry, did not catch his name correctly, and didn’t want to put an incorrect one in… bad editing on my part when I took it out. Bad Fish, Bad! :)
Have we heard one MSMer ask McCain any questions about lobbyist or one particular lobbyist after McCain and other slapped down the New York Times article?
Hell the MSMer’s do not hesitate to keep, flag pins, Bosnia, Ayers, Pastor Wright hogwash alive? When will they ask him about lobbyist? At McCains next barbecue for the press?
And the media will say he’s passionate about that. It’s not temper when you’re a repug, or plain insanity, it’s teh passion…

Citizen Hardin Smith and the Firepup Freedom Fighters:
Another great sermon with revelations to the choir but why won’t stories like this get into the election campaign conversation? More that the fact that the corporate media is bought and paid for, we have a fascist stalkin’ horse keepin’ the Democratic primary open like a bleeder from the carotid artery.
Up to this point the contested primary has been good for the Democratic Party to expand the base, register new voters and expose Mrs. McClinton as the corporate shill that she is which will be essential in November…but now, after watchin’ the corporate sluts on cable news last night tryin’ ta spin a loss by Obama in Pennsylvania into momentum for Mrs. McClinton, I am convinced that the elected leadership and Howard Dean hafta put the McClinton campaign outta business and end what could get ta be a long national nightmare.
Why haven’t rank and file McClinton supporters opened their eyes in the last 10 dayz with the revelations about Ricard Scaife, McClinton’s income status and her underminin’ of an essential part of the Democratic grass roots. Since yer pretty well connected to folks workin’ in each Democratic camp, ken you tell us if there are any internal poll numbers that show an erosion of McClinton’s base?
What do ya think the chances are of her pullin’ a Lik*derman and runnin’ as McCrazy’s VP?
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNITION…WE NOW KNOW MORE’N WE WANNED TO AND IT IS GETTIN’ WORSE!!
I get that. But I’m talking about full meltdown; you know — a break dancing, frothing at the lips, macaca-laden blast that can’t be ignored.

“Trust me – it’s coming. He’s got no control.”
You’re absolutely right that it’s only a matter of time…but what if it happens after he’s elected and Mrs. McClinton is his VP?
Scary, ain’t it?
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNITION, NOT ALL FASCISTS CALL THEMSELVES REPUBLICANS!!
“Can’t I eat my waffle?” Were you listening to Laura Ingraham. How crazy can you get? She had a whole spot replaying his answer as if he would never be able to make decisions or answer the red phone. Then she went on to celebrate the Rush Operation Chaos because she thinks it will work so well in PA with thousands voting just to screw the Demo. race. The times they are acrazy.
I am not speechless.
It is to be expected… sadly.
