In this week’s ABC debate, Barack Obama gets asked about his patriotism. Yesterday morning on ABC, John McCain gets asked if Barack Obama "shares his patriotism."
But Karl Rove appeared on Fox News wearing a flag pin, so I guess we know who the true patriot is.

Don’t forget to watch Sheikh bin al BaraBitterBlackHusseinMadrassaOsamaBama on Jon Stewart tonight. Oughta be pretty interesting.
Jane!
I’m very disappointed that you and Glenn weren’t wearing flag pins in Saturday’s video book salon, Jane.
The Wizard of Whimsy had the best reply to an Old Glory lapel pin.
One cut to the shape of a bomb.
made it through :15. ugh.
When did George drink the koolaid. Why is he asking a candidate about another candidate’s patriotism instead of his own. jerks.
Jane, this whole subject makes me want to vomit. Hypocritical @#$holes. Just when I think I can bear the lying sack o’turds for a few more (only a few more) months, basically stupid memes like this send me over the edge. And yes, I’m a bitter elitist.
“Senator McCain, does Vicki Iseman love America as much as you do?”
Karl Rove wearing a flag pin is like Satan wearing a crucifix.
Oh, eg, that’s worthy of Coke coming out of the nose, if one were drinking it at this instant (thank gosh NOT!)
Nice!
BRAVO!!!!!!!!!!!!!I’m bitter today.
I guess.
earlier this morning, KayInMaine noted that it’s Patriot’s Day in Maine & Massachusetts,
then nomolos teased her.
This is just so absurd.
John McCain gets asked if Barack Obama “shares his patriotism.”
How the F*CK would he know???
And let me say right now: I am NOT “patriotic” in the sense these criminals are talking about. I didn’t do anything on the 4th of July because there wasn’t anything to celebrate. What I do care about are American ideals embodied in the Bill of Rights and manifested through the lives of many of my fellow citizens.
And I care about the Earth. I care about the planet WAY MORE than I give a damn about red, white, and blue. You can’t see any borders from up in space, and the Universe doesn’t give a damn about stupid American hegemony.
Me, too. But I remain bitter every day BushCo remains in office.
Ding.
I remember a couple of years ago I had one on my jacket at a party and a friend said “I didn’t think you were like that”!
what is patriotism?
Sounds like Neil Young in the Last Waltz!
so which side of his lapel does Karl pin his flag on, right or left?
enquiring minds…
I am so sick of the pin thing.
Let them all wear Constitution pins and recite their oath of office promising to support and defend the CONSTITUTION every morning on the floor(s) instead of the prayers by the chaplains.
really.
and the pundits and infotainers can wear their corporate logo pins…
Couple of random news stats just in, for us bitteristas:
Q: Does it remain premature to speak of $200/bbl crude oil?
That’s outrageous. How can one call oneself a “patriot” and have such elementary disrespect for the Bill of Rights?
Well at least McCain condems Hagees remarks that “are in any way viewed as anti-anything.” I guess that clears it up then…at least for the lizard brains.
“Waterloo here I come!” – McCain
The entire reason for the question about Obama’s patriotism was to allow St McCain to say “Yes, but….” which he obediently said. Stephanopolous should be disbarred from debates, and Democrats should boycott his wee programme.
Hah! Hadn’t thought about that…

Jingoism at its finest. “I wear a pin do you? “
Anyone catch the Kipling special on PBS last night? Res ipsa loquiter.
Does anyone else remember what Bubba did with this question in his debate with 41?
He smacked it out of teh park on 11 October, 1992:
I defer to Samuel Johnson.
If this Ayers cat is an “unrepentant Terrorist,” why has Bu’ush not disappeared him to Gitmo?
Problem is, Snuffleupagus won’t know I’m boycotting him because I never watched his POS talking-head extravaganza to begin with.
Yes. That was totally off-the-hook fine.
Listen to McCain talk about what a swell guy this dickhead Coburn is.
I got a message for KKKarl, courtesy of John Prine:
Your Flag
DecalPin Won’t Get You Into Heaven Anymore© John Prine
Chorus:
But your flag
decalpin won’t get youInto Heaven any more.
They’re already overcrowded
From your dirty little war.
Now Jesus don’t like killin’
No matter what the reason’s for,
And your flag
decalpin won’t get youInto Heaven any more.
Bob in HI
They got run off, not everyone can hang with some of the bullshit up in here.
He’s down there with Lou (No More Brown People) Dobbs, who was running off on this again yesterday, complete with admiring letters from viewers.
I’d like to tell that entire group that if that’s how they decide who to vote for, they really, really deserve the government they’ve given the rest of us, with their flag pins and their ‘who would you like to have a beer with’ cr*p. (The rest of us deserve better government than that.)
Howdy, Jane – my dream is that someone pulls the Rove flag pin off and finds the magic “Made in China” stamped on the back.
It’s not my best dream, but the flag pin thing takes stupid to a whole new level.
Mc Cain’s main homeboy:
Homosexual Panic
According to The American Prospect during Coburn’s 2004 senatorial campaign in Oklahoma, Coburn remarked that in the town of Coalgate, Oklahoma, lesbianism was “so rampant in some of the schools…that they’ll let only one girl go to the bathroom.” [6] Coburn has also been quoted as saying: “The gay community has infiltrated the very centers of power in every area across this country, and they wield extreme power … That agenda is the greatest threat to our freedom that we face today. Why do you think we see the rationalization for abortion and multiple sexual partners? That’s a gay agenda.” [7]
Mind Reading Claims
During Senate hearings on conservative Supreme Court nominee John Roberts, Coburn claimed that he could detect whether or not someone was speaking the truth because of his medical training. He repeated this assertion of practical mind reading ability in an interview with Tim Russert on Meet the Press on November 6, 2005. Coburn explicitly stated that he used his physician training to detremine when witnesses before Congressional hearings were lying although he refused to specifiy which instances. One obvious question to ask is whether or not Coburn believes his own claims of superhuman powers.
Schindler’s List
As a congressman in the 1990s, Coburn protested NBC’s airing of the movie Schindler’s List. Coburn said in airing the movie NBC had taken television “to an all-time low, with full-frontal nudity, violence and profanity”. He also said the broadcast should outrage parents and decent-minded individuals everywhere. Coburn described the airing of Schindler’s List as, “…irresponsible sexual behavior…I cringe when I realize that there were children all across this nation watching this program.” Many people disagreed with this statement.
Heh!
My sis was singing that one the other night during the debate.
(we love John Prine)
Alberto Gonzales always wore a Old Glory Pin.
Scumbag of first order.
McCain sounded so comforting in that “hey little boy, you want some candy?” kind of way.
Ick.
As soon as it warms up a little more, I’m going out to heal my front garden, where I still have my little American Flag on a stick from last 4th of July. As I weed and prune, do I leave the flag or weed it?
I do want to be seen as a patriot, whatever that means.
A loaded prejudicial question based on an assumption:
That question was contrived, deliberated and intended to malign Obama.
Morning, Jane.
Andy Card wears a 12 oz. Old Glory Lapel Pin.
Chief Marketeer of the Iraq War.
Yeah, Coburn is a real piece of work.
Heroically bringing babies into the world.
A small percentage of whom will go on to lesbianistically terrorize school bathrooms.
Assclown.
hypocrisy – thy name is mccain or should i say mcinsane……
I like Coburn. He reminds me that even complete, abject idiocy and mean-spiritedness has a funny side.
Yes. It was painful though excellent. Maybe the males on this site can help me understand why men love war and love to sacrifice their sons to “the noble cause”? It’s gone on for so many thousands of years and not one iota has been learned. I sincerely am mystified.
What a fucking crock of shit, did Charlie repent for kickin our ass?
We remain a morally primitive species burdened with nihilistic tendencies.
I guess Dubya’s BO is the smell of patriotism…
What is the smell of good governing I wonder?
Mention the devil.
I meant that Democrats shouldn’t appear on ABC’s This Week.
That, my dear, is a very serious over-generalization. “Why men love war”
Beware the phony fluffed-up predicate…..
McCain’s patriotism? Is that the kind that stands strong against benefits for veterans?
Michael Moore and Camille Paglia both endorse Obama. Got my One of A Million tee-shirt today–at last! Plannin’ to wear it out to dinner.
George TBF Stephanopoulos is a schmuck. Charles Gibson is an arrogant condescending elitist. ABC All-Bad Channel. The Disney boycott continues….
Don’t look at me. I’m apparently not masculine enough to “get it.”
AT least Stephanopoulos pressed him on Hagee.
Stephanopoulous is more residue of the Clintons although George had to apply twice to get his Rhodes and Bill just once
made in China?
Pressed as in meekly bringing it up and not pressing any follow up.
I think this point can’t be blogged enough. It is the media who is ELITE, who drives the conversation, who dumbs down the discourse, who looks down their collective noses at the masses now. “The crowd has turned against us” indeed.
Make it a public tipping point and chase these people out of town on a rail.
He overcompensating for something? *g*
Doesn’t Rove have the flag tattooed to his body somewhere?
But my mom loves his ties.
Now THAT’s a question
Charles Gibson is/was on the Board of Trustees of Princeton. Wikipedia says he did not go to law school because he determined he could not get into a top ten law school, or something to that effect. This wanabe and wanabe lawyer is now a newsreader, poseur intellect and questioner on the MSM. Thanks for nothing, Charlie, you tiger you.
This is what I have been pushing in pointing out that those we see on television or read in venues like the Times are millionaires who have nothing in common with ordinary Americans but feel they can speak for us anyway. Because Charlie Gibson and George Will are obsessed with the capital gains tax, they think the rest of us must be as well.
I don’t think so, Raven. What is the percentage of women to men who sit in the War Room and architect war? It certainly isn’t 50/50. What is the percentage of males in the Pentagon to women in like positions? Not 50/50 or even close.
How many female generals do you see as the mouthpiece advocating war on TV? Not 50/50.
Have I seen women take to violence. Yes. If you enter my home and try to rape my grandchild, I’ll be a force to be reckoned with.
How many men did the dirty work of slaughtering in Rwanda compared to women? Or Sudan? Or Timor?
I would prefer you did not reduce my observation to “over-generalization” and just give me an answer, if you have one.
And after the question about Ayers Hillary piles on about farrakan and now Rendell is caught praising him …..unbelievable..that whole debate was a joke
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DXum_-8I1TA
Go through this frame-by-frame and count the number of armed, uniformed females.
I find most stories about the media focus on the business of newspapers, TV news dept, advertisers, lack of resources, etc. sometimes controlling the message will rear its ugly head but the point gets lost in the overwhelming unprofitability of doing anything but promulgating propaganda.
Honestly, a story about the wealth of “the people’s spokespeople” would be eye-popping. Do you know of any such stories that maybe I missed? The newsmodels so want to be the story I don’t think they’d mind!
Gibson is a pampered and priviledged member of the courtesan class that is completely out of touch with average Americans. In a debate in New Hampshire he suggested that the average couple who are professors make $200,000 and would lose if the Bush tax cuts were rescinded. The audience laughed at his ignorance. The public is catching on to the duplicity and hypocracy of these shills for the status quo.
its difficult to relate to the average working oerson when well-paid media folk dont know the cost of anything except maybe the cost of expensive autos etc…
If everyone that visits a progressive blog would contact the sponsors of ABC News to inform them they are boycotting their products until ABC News returns to being an honest broker of the 4th Estate. The only thing these people respond to is a threat to their bottom line.
“the average couple who are professors make $200,000″
__________
ROTFL
Nationally ~50% of postsecondary teaching faculty are part-time adjuncts making less than $20k/yr (UNLV paid me about $2,200 per 3 hr course, no benefits; I think it’s now up to a bit more than $2,300). Even the vast majority of PhD level full time faculty make nowhere near $100k each. What crap.
Once again it seems appropriate to quote Keating:
Just in case there’s any doubt left about what kind of man Keating, a close associate of McCain, you might say, since his wife and her family invested in his projects, there is this quote from the instructions given to those selling his junk bonds in the lobby of the bank he owned:
The salespeople were thus advised to take elderly people’s retirement nest egg and invest it in junk bonds with the implication that the investment had the backing of the FDIC. This should prove the qualifications and importance that McSame attaches to his associations.
Except for stray references, I have not found much on the salaries of newspeople or pundits. I saw something once that said a Lou Dobbs makes around $8 million a year. You can kind of extrapolate from there. There was a Frontline on this but IIRC it was back in the 90s. I wish they would do another or an update.
Aww, what a guy,
John McCain just hired Miss South Carolina to watch over his interns.
for some reason they don’t report on themselves.
Why didnt Hillary have a flag pin? Has anyone seen her wearing one?
I hate TV, it’s like all marketing all of the time.
Might clash with the colors she chooses.
The Hidden Persuaders aren’t so hidden anymore.
Any word on whether they’ll come back after the primary process is over and the
poo flingingfervent partisanship stops?thank god the penn primary is almost over!! so much vitriole and mcinsane is just taking it all in…. – when will dems start attacking him is what i want to know!!
yeah, that’s why it’s called programming.
As was famously said, “Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel”.
It is pretty amazing that these guys, who are running for President, are being asked about their patriotism. Are they going to keep asking that when Obama is the President?
Ohhhh…snark
Nepotism is the best way to go to ensure you don’t have to compete for a job. It works so well. McCain probably has a myriad of old military buddies he’ll put in various cabinet positions. Here’s another tidbit on Daddy’s girl.
Ashley Zais graduated from Wofford College with a Bachelor of science degree in psychology and a minor in religion.
Awesome!
I know, it’s so astoundingly stupid. Duh, I’m running for president because i hate the country and think Putin is the Man!
I KNEW that about you! Just knew it!
I personally hope not.
Let us all procure lapel pins, that we may wear them upside down, which might send a message to those who understand what such a display means.
The rest will attack us anyway so we might as well get them foaming at the mouth that their patriotism may be seen for what it is, ‘only mad dogs and’ neocons and their somewhat mindless ‘pack’ go into the midday sun’ (of endless warfare and vicious destruction of … everything.
Howdy Jane, one ‘provocateur’ to another.
And meanwhile, Bush is fucking up the country like nobody’s business! Even I don’t question his Patriotism, but sometimes you have to wonder.
I would wear the fuckin pins if I were running for prez. Why the fuck not?
Probably hangin multiple crosses around one’s neck and wearing a “praying hands” belt is going to far- but a flag pin? Sure.
I’d wear a flag pin, and then a little pin of Bush setting it on fire.
TV in America is merely a propaganda and marketing tool. They think the public has the attention span of a gnat. In France television regularly has 2+ hours of panel discussions talking on topical issues of the day with view points across the political spectrum. In the U.S. the opinions are from center to extreme right of center.
No flag pins here..
just another generation of DFH’S here in Colorado
http://www.dailycamera.com/new…..aws-10000/
What if you there were a small doll of Bush for your lapel that you could then put a smaller flag pin through. Partriotic voodooism.
Surely you’re aware of the struggle over the last four decades for women to be allowed to occupy military positions and combat roles which would qualify them for promotion to higher rank and participation in the highest counsels of war.
Otherwise, I thought it was generally understood that in most cultures, boys have been raised to hunt, defend, participate in warlike athletic events, while girls received training in domestic skills. I mean these matters are at the center of all arguments and issues related to gender.
Did you not know that, until recently, most boys were consdidered something less than perfect representatives of their gender if they were strong, athletic, willing to fight over any threat or offense to honor. Oh well, it’s a long story, but I’m surprised if you seriously aren’t aware of it.
Obama is probably spending millions fighting the flag pin issue instead of spending a buck and wearing one….seems like a pretty easy decision.
“their gender if they were strong, athletic”
Correction: if they weren’t
Nice, but I think they’d crucify Obama for that one.
flag pin protest outside ABC/Disney
Mah flag lapel pin!
Aaaaah!
I’ve lost it ….darn.
Wait, what’s this on my shirt?
Um, let’s see …
Hmm. It’s a guy, yeah it’s a guy on a horse and um… this is upside down … oh, yeah he’s holdin’ a croquet mallet.
Wonder what it means.
I remember when there were alligators there …
Seriously?
Gee, it’s probably too late to point out that both India and Israel were at war with women Prime Ministers. As for the rest of your argument. . .come on that’s just plain silly.
Gibson realized he wasn’t able to continue his college deferment by getting into law school in 1966. So instead of enlisting in the Armed Services sending the bulk of their men to Vietnam, Gibson wrangled a spot in the Coast Guard (it’d be interesting to find out how…it wasn’t easy without connections). While a few USCG vessels did get sent to the Theater more than 95% of Coasties never went near VN. Gibson, like Bush, spent those years patrolling US waters puttin’ down angry crocodiles and making sure than shipd were safe during incoming hurricanes. Dangerous durty, when necessary, but nothing like what Kerry or Gore faced.
