I have to go back and review the background of the Balfour Declaration but if memory serves his “declaration” was more a result of trying to help European Jews, who he wholeheartedly supported, than England’s imperial policies. He may not have been a great fan of the Arabs in what used to be the Ottoman Empire but I don’t think he foresaw what would occur in the next few years and continues to this day.

Used the model of a Protestant Ulster in the midst of Roman Catholic Ireland as a model all over the world. Well, we all know how well that worked out.

The imperial model certainly was divide the locals in order to conquer them. You could find examples in every colony. As you point out, the conflicts generated by that policy have lasted for centuries. There’s a similarity between the English drafting Protestant Scots to emigrate to Northern Ireland in order to create an enclave for English interests, and the Israeli imposition of settlers on what Palestinians consider their land.

This administration’s policies in Iraq are embarrassingly imperial. Like the truth of much else about how they operate, only they refuse to acknowledge it.

sorry for the delay with the promised hearings… somehow i let myself get distracted this morning…

as usual, the complete list is available by clicking on my name (i just tried to pick the hearings i thought might be of the most interest here, but i could have gotten it wrong)

p.s. many thanks to the mods for the quick release of my previous - i shouldn’t have left the links in, that always seems to cause a problem with the filters.
