The imperial model certainly was divide the locals in order to conquer them. You could find examples in every colony. As you point out, the conflicts generated by that policy have lasted for centuries. There’s a similarity between the English drafting Protestant Scots to emigrate to Northern Ireland in order to create an enclave for English interests, and the Israeli imposition of settlers on what Palestinians consider their land.

This administration’s policies in Iraq are embarrassingly imperial. Like the truth of much else about how they operate, only they refuse to acknowledge it.
