And a really simple way to grow tomatoes is just to buy a box of cherry tomatoes and plant half of them, just as they are out of the box, into a large ceramic or wood container. Your tomatoes will grow as a vine, so you’ll need a wire or stake for them but you’ll have tomatoes all summer long! Just pluck off enough anytime you need some for a salad or other meal.

I’m EPU’d as always.

It’s snowing today in Western Washington. I’m wondering what this is doing to the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival: http://www.tulipfestival.org/.

Spring will be here. Eventually.

southern at 46–way cool, i have a cooper’s hawk that has been landing in my shagbark hickory right by the deck……beautiful bird.

my gpa-pop, used to feed the squirrels by hand……the ones here torment my dog, it’s a big game, they sit above her and spit pieces of nut hulls on her head.

they stretch out in a sunspot on the deck rail by the bird feeders and take a nap.

it’s funny. one of them sits in the juniper by the front and ’chits’ and looks in the window at her.

Thanks Valley Girl for your tip! I’ll do cherry tomatoes then. We eat a ton of salads during the summer more so than during the cold months, so cherry tomatoes makes the most sense. ;-)

That’s such a great story. My mother and grandmother (+ aunts etc) were gardeners. It didn’t much make its way to me, but as a child, I spent alot of time staying near my mom while we were in the dirt. No one ever seemed to mind getting dirty…and yes, TX hot. Those seem like gentle time with much less hurry, but plenty of hard work for sure.

If you cave to that sentiment, they have won.

Being you in all it’s manifestations is the best possible. Nothing else will do.

I’ve been pretty devastated since that post about the kids in Iraq yesterday…and talking about my garden seems completely embarrassing with all that is going on, because I can and those in wartorn areas have lost everything…It just makes no sense.

I know LS. There is this huge disconnect. I’ll read Gorilla’s Guides, and see pictures of little kids in hospital or in a coffin. Then I’ll see my kid enjoying himself with his buds. I can’t make any sense of it. It is an incredible heartache. My son will find me weeping in the kitchen and say “reading the news again Mom?”
