I missed Tim Russert -- that's how bad last night's "Michelle Malkin/Steve Doocy" driven non-policy based debate turned out. As was clearly noted by you in several contemporaneous posts by Eli, But don't take it from me or us, take it from Tom Shales:
Charlie Gibson and George Stephanopoulos, turned in shoddy, despicable performances....
At the end, Gibson pompously thanked the candidates -- or was he really patting himself on the back? -- for "what I think has been a fascinating debate." He's entitled to his opinion, but the most fascinating aspect was waiting to see how low he and Stephanopoulos would go, and then being appalled at the answer.
I look forward to the national debates this year, when the Democrat gets asked about some 8th cousins poor behavior on "Survivor" or burgeoning adult film career, followed by John McCain getting to talk about his POW experiences.
From Chris Vlasto to Jake Tapper's obsession with smelling the candidates, ABC news remains the place to go, to reaffirm 'Drudge Rocks their World'...and Sean Hannity writes their questions.
And, as done last night -- here are the feedback forums where you can tell ABC News just how much you appreciated their nearly policy-free effort.
ABC switchboard: 212-456-7777 or per Joe Sudbay 818-460-7477.
Or you can fill out their online feedback form.

I’m telling you this helps us there was no question the debate was biased, ignored the issues, was a waste of time, put the media on trial etc.
When the media is so obvious and crude forceful, clumsy in their attempt to change America’s mind there is no way to avoid a counter reaction from the voters.
How will this reaction take shape? Will it go National? Will the MSM keep helping us by pissing off our base and making them more angry/intent to vote?
I think they will the Bushies never admit to mistakes and the media is letting Judy Miller keep her Pulitzer.
But we need both our Presidential Candidates to respond forcefully and preferably together to respond to ABC.
How should they respond though?
Thanks for the link, Attaturk. I gave them my .02. I said I hoped that, come license-renewal time, they had some serious challengers.
The ABCnews website is of course all about the debate. They offer many highlights so people who missed the debate can see that candidates views on the issues currently facing America:
- Should Dems Join ‘Dream Ticket’?
- Join the Debate: Live Blogging from Philly
- Clinton Explains Bosnia Botch
- Obama’s Pastor Under Fire
- Does Hillary Think Barack Can Win?
- FACEBOOK: Debate the Debate Now
- Doubting Obama’s Patriotism?
- Clinton’s ‘Baggage’ an Asset?
I must have put tin foil sheets on the bed because I certainly had a strange thought that jolted me wide awake.
I wonder if that horrible hit job ABC debate was some attempt by ABC to make nice with the White House after their reporting last week about the WH principals holding torture meetings and even choreographing the torture?
Attaturk - Tbogg says stop parking in his spot or he and the reddhead are gonna TP yer car!
My written complaint to abc news:
What was most appalling??? Gibson’s laughter at being heckled! Does he think he has a right to insult the American voter and two candidates and then laugh when the audience expresses its displeasure?
Or was this an example of choreographed torture? Of 2 candidates and the American public?
Yer supposed to use the tinfoil for yer hat, not yer bedding!
What debate were you watching?
Y’all are just upset that Obama finally got treated like a Democrat.
My dog can outrun bassets.
…although I may not be able to.
hard to believe the party of “all in the familiy” has become the republican tool it is today
now it’s the party of disney, it’s the party of that rediculous hit peace they were able to call “the true story of 9/11″ or something like that and they are going to do their best to see mccain the next president
those dirty little bassets
Worst. Debate. Ever. I’m still reeling from the inanity of it all. I’d say it’s good that the ABC (*cough*) News website has over 10,500 negative comments, but that would require the staff reading any of them.
This is the “democracy” we’re trying to export to Iraq? I don’t want it any more than they evidently do.
No we are upset that both Senators Clinton and Obama were disrespected by the moderators and the American people who face significant challenges were shortchanged at what may be the last debate. The media’s focus on trivialities and frivolity makes it possible for idiots like W. to start foreign wars and candidates like McCain to offer that we must stay in Iraq for a century without his basic strategy being scrutinized. The meme that Obama needs to be vetted because the GOP will do it is horseshit. Our country needs to get beyond “guilt by association” and “soundbites” and debate real issues. The people deserve it. The prolongation of this campaign has given McCain a free ride and the Dems have some real catchup work to do.
1,815 DAYZ AND THE KILLIN GOEZ ON AND ON AND…
Citizen perris and the Firepup Freedom Fighters:
Now are progressive people gunna wake up and realize that the fascists are not gunna allow a simple free election to give a progressive, anti-corporatist politician the reigns of power? We are gunna hafta fight ta get our country back and if the angst-ridden “liberals” don’t wake up and roll their sleeves up and take the gloves off we’re gunna be tryin ta memorize the Bill of Rights in the re-education camps. The American corporate oligarchy trails it’s pedigree back to the ante bellum South and will make the Nazis look like liberal social workers!
KEEP THE FAITH AND DON’T WAIT TO SEE THE WHITES OF THEIR EYES!!
Good Morning,
I ain’t never been to disney
and i don’t watch abc
i’d just rather sit at home and watch
all the snow on channel three
After watching last nights debate we should all treat ourselves to reading an excerpt from Glenn Greenwald’s new book.
http://www.salon.com/books/exc.....greenwald/
Here was the comment I left about the Greenwald piece.
After Last Nights Debate Debacle the Time is Right to Take Back Our Airwaves
In the Clinton/Obama debate on ABC last night we got a ringside seat to watch what Glenn so accurately describes as the media parroting the “shallow story lines” that the right-wing needs to win elections. Let’s hope the outrage and scorn leveled upon ABC last night by their viewers over the inane content of the first hour of the debate will not disipate but will pick up speed and consume all those in the media who would dare to repeat what ABC did last night. But let’s not leave it to chance, let’s make sure that all of us encourage our fellow political junkies to make their voices heard loud and clear that we will no longer sit quietly while the media manipulates the coverage of this campaign.
David Brooks take on the debate last night. WARNING: Read this one after you’ve read the piece by Greenwald. LOL

No Whining About the Media
By David Brooks
http://campaignstops.blogs.nyt.....ex.html?hp
George used to work for Bill Clinton I wonder if James Carville is going to call him Judas Squared after participating in that harsh but LAME attack on the Dems.
I personally hope so cause that would add more fuel to the fire we want this story to have legs for as long as possible.
Good morning, pups. It’s Collins, Cohen and Kristof today. La Collins watched that disgraceful “debate” last night and tells us about the “Battle of the Baggage.” She says that in the first half-hour of the 24th debate Wednesday night, the Democratic candidates for president tossed personal baggage back and forth like a tennis ball. Well, dear, might that be because in the first 45 minutes not one single question on a substantive issue was asked? Mr. Cohen, in “Race and American Memory” asks why the U.S. has produced a magnificent Holocaust Memorial Museum before opening an institution of equivalent stature dedicated to slavery and segregation. Mr. Kristof’s column is titled “Divided They Fall,” and he says even though the policy differences between the two Democratic candidates are minimal, each camp is becoming increasingly aggravated at the other.

The coffee, tea and hot chocolate are ready, and I’ve got banana pancakes today. I think I’ll put on my Hazmat suit and read David Brooks’ bloggy thingy now — nothing gets the heart started in the morning quite like a surge of fury…
David Brooks gives ABC a fucking grade of A for that debate?
Call and leave a message for the President of ABC NEWS!
Call the New York main number and ask for
212-456-7777
David Westin - President of ABC NEWS
I called and told him what a sham of a debate that was. Disgraceful.
George
Carville has been attacking Democrats for a long, long time. He is a dyed in the wool gooperlite, DLC or whatever. As for that little slime staphylococcus he has been a corporate whore for many a moon
Well that certainly tells you like it is.
From the NYT re Bill Ayery:
In case you want to pull out specific questions to quote in your letters to ABC here’s the transcript of last night’s “debate.”
That bit of spin is so weak the press exposes issues like wearing a flag pin? What about Ossama still walking around free in Pakistan while our troops waste time in Iraq.
Oh wait the Press didn’t ask that question they didn’t have time for such (snark) mundane issues when Flag Pins are being discussed!
David Brooks isn’t just throwing weak Pitches he’s spun around Dizzy so much that he’s throwing in Pitches in the opposite direction of Home Plate.
He is the poster child of the media does not get it. He is the poster child for belief over reason or over evidence and experimentation.
Why doesn’t David write another great piece about how Bush never gets the credit that he is due for how great the economy is doing!
Sorry I have not watched those two much for years I just assumed that they were Democrats.
That’s the problem… …supposedly they are Democrats!
Yesterday we received a fund raising letter ostensibly from Carville. We sent a donation to our local, progressive candidate (Carol Shea Porter) is a response. In light of the take over a few years ago by the clinton/liarman DLC of the Democratic Party we only send to specific, progressive candidates now. Ef the national parties!
Totally OT alert. We can see our first daffodil bud this morning! Can the flowers be far behind.
Well that and my stomach rolls over everytime I see them roll over to a GOPer on TV, I have never seen a dog as well trained as. Men should have dignity I do not care how much they pay you to live on your knees no amount of fame and money is worth it.
I include Tweety, Pumpkinhead etc in that category as well.
Well said. 3:52 a.m., but had to log in to respond. Exactly right, thanks!
Along with Joke Line
Also referred to as “Moderate Democrats”
This year’s elections have come down to one thing for this family and that is doing everything we can to get our local Democrats into office. To hell with the two national corporate toadies. As my wonderful wife says, “If clinton is the nominee I will probably vote for McSame and hope like hell that we can get a strong Democratic majority in both houses” No love for that clinton woman here
Just popping in to add my two cents. It’s time to ask Charlie and George whether or not they love America! It seems to me that if they did, they would be concerned about the credit crisis, the housing crisis, the loss of middle income jobs, the war in Iraq, and etc, etc, etc,.. Back to packing since I’m in the middle of a move.
YAY!!! I’ve got dahlia buds. Congratulations on your promise of spring.
Forget it. They live in the 1% bubble, they have not a clue about shopping for food, buying petrol, keeping an old car on the road, worrying about healthcare, or any thing else that the rest of us have to do.
we know as a fact bush’s grandfather was a big supporter of hitler and fascism
I believe scalia has similar roots, loe and behold, scalia and bush both believe torture is a grand idea
apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, does it
You dislike the woman so much you would rather have a 3rd Bush term?
I just don’t get it. We had some candidates I was excited about, they are all gone now. I am left with 2 pieces of crap and McSame.
I choose the crap of either gender.
Well, I didn’t watch the debate (I can’t have ABC on my tv…gives me hives) but did suffer through the comments here last night. It was very obvious to me the fascists at ABC still believe that democracy is a big fat joke. Osama bin Laden would have been proud of Gibson & Snufflofogus last night, because he too doesn’t want to talk about the real issues, because by doing so, he’d have to give up his religious jihad. Gibson, Snuffy, George Bush, Dick Cheney, John McCain, Hillary Clinton and others don’t want that to happen because the war profiteering has been so wonderful over the years!
Assholes.
Thanks for the phone numbers. I too will be calling.
EXACTLY!!! Anyone who’s thinking of voting for McSame needs to repeat the mantra: “Supreme Court, Supreme Court, Supreme Court” as often as it takes to remove the idea of a third Bush term.
By the way, did Gibson & Snuffy wear their flag pins last night? Were they big flag pins (represents the highest amount of patriotism & America loving) or were they small ones the fascists usually wear where you have to go up to the screen to see if it truly is a flag? Spit.
Anyone who is wearing a flag pin is one who is a fake patriot. The End.
I particularly liked the Obama comment about a budget based on a credit card from the Bank of China.
That bears repeating whenever the subject of taxes comes up.
The Bush Administration waged an ‘off the budget’ war which will be paid for one way or another.
The alternative to taxes is to let the Bank of China foreclose the mortgage on America.
Good Morning everybody,
CSPAN didn’t put up today’s lineup, and I missed the 7:00 recap (sorry) but I do know that at 7:30, Susan will be dissecting the debate with someone from Temple University.
I’ve all ready sent in two questions about the questions asked last night. I urge you all to question the quality of last night’s debate, too.
Strike back!

By the way, did Gibson & Snuffy wear their flag pins last night?
Of course not!
Here’s the comment I just left over on ABC. It hasn’t been posted. I wonder why? LOL
“It’s obvious to me ABC’s Gibson & Snuffy continue to click their jackboots together in unison for America’s neo-GOP-Nazi party of America! I fully expect Gibson & Snuffy to wear a US flag pin the size of a dinner plate today to PROVE to America that they love this country more than the rest of us. Hey, it’s the only way to show your love, isn’t it? Spit.
Who has ruined America? Oh that’s right: GEORGE BUSH, DICK CHENEY, THE CLINTON CLAN, OSAMA BIN LADEN. Nice group, huh? They’re all deserving of one another.
By the way, where is Osama? Oh that’s right! He’s been dead for years but is used by those who have ruined America to get what they want!
Take your US flag pins and shove them up your BLEEP!”
Thanks for the Flag Pin Update, Attaturk! I knew it. These two were talking out their asses again. Spit.
If you’re not wearing a US flag pin and you point your fingers at others when they’re not wearing a US flag pin, you are example of a jackboot licking neo-GOP-Nazi. Good for you!
Marion @ 42 is right, nomolos,
just whisper those two words in your dear wife’s ear as she steps into the voting booth :)
Matthews and Scarborough are holding forth this morning about flag pins and patriotism. I guess we need to call their hand on this. Any presidential candidate who won’t have Old Glory tatooed, in full color, across their forehead, is obviously a ‘merica hater.
George is coming up on Imus. (Spare me what you think of Imus, I don’t give a shit)
To my thinking, nothing is less patriotic than asking unimportant questions at such a critical time in our country. Thanks Chuckles and Georgie, you cowards.
OT.
Former GE CEO Jack Welch threatens to kill current CEO Jeffrey Immelt if GE
misses its profit forecast again.
On CNBC, no less.
I’m sure that the FBI will be all over this.
As soon asthey wipe the eggs off of their faces in Miami.
Michael Hagen
Director of Institute of Public Affairs, Temple
Therein lies the problem in this household. We do not think that clinton2 would be averse to nominating an anti-choice SCJ if her corporate masters instruct it. And no, under no circumstances would we vote for clinton2.
ding
Exactly. If I see one person today without a cardboard US flag draped over their shoulders on both sides of their bodies, well then, I’m going to have to point and scream, “YOU ARE A TRAITOR TO AMERICA! OFF WITH YOUR HEAD!”. See? Gibson & Snuffy set the tone last night and it’s my patriotic duty to round up the America-Haters today. Apparently I’m going to have to start with Gibson & Snuffy since they didn’t wear their pins last night.
LOL. We were just talking about their discussion as I read your comment. Chris Matthews babbling on and on about we need presidents like Ronnie Raygun who have a tear in their eye when they see old glory. My gag reflex is really being overworked this morning. It’s like Matthews read Greenwald’s new book and is trying his best to provide as many examples of what Glenn outlined as possible. What a maroon.
Actually it is she (over 30 years in reproductive rights) that is most adamantly opposed to the woman.
“She said that she was working for the ABC News,
It was as much of the alphabet as she knew how to use,”
Elvis Costello, “Brilliant Mistake.”
Does that mean you missed Imus telling George that he and Gibson were “as good as Russert and Briam Williams”?
I missed the debate, but it sounds like exactly the kind of media behaviour that Glenn Greenwald describes in his new book, Great American Hypocrites.
I’ve always valued placing cheap replicas and symbols of the things I value most on any available open space. I did have to move the photo of my parents from the rear bumper to the front bumper. It just didn’t look right next to the nude photo of my wife.
LOL. Yes, at least I was spared from hearing that.
Exactly!
Watch for the spin I bet he will dismiss the complaints as just being from bloggers and not representive of the American people, never mind that 70% of the people do not approve of Bush because of the war.
Nope Flag pins are the made up issue of the day. I bet George has a White House Blackberry so he can get emails direct from Karl Rove.
Cause thats who I bet wrote last nights questions!
I interrupt this blog for the following commercial announcement wigwam:
FDL Book Salon
this Saturday, April 19, 2008 5:00pm Eastern
Great American Hypocrites: Toppling the Big Myths of Republican Politics
Chat with Glenn Greenwald about his new book.
“Do you love your country as much as Reverend Wright?”
I would have held my arms out and said:
“Yeah, this much”.
Frigging infantile.
Yeah, yeah.
He was also devastating on a horsie.
Thank you.
It doesn’t sound to me like they are even going to talk about what “some” are saying about how they handled the debate. Everyone realizes that most people don’t give a flying fuck about how the debate was conducted?
I’ve sent two letters to the Editor so far and left comments with everyone at ABC I could. I did get a letter in the Austin paper Bay’s column in response to Blue Texan’s post the other day. E mail responses were 5 positive, 26 against. The RWers obviously have a fairly organized response team, I had four from them by 0630 & they weren’t very friendly, the nicest thing they called me was an “Dumbocrat Idiot”. Typical level of discourse.
Of the 26, 2 were actually civil.
Chris Mathews said we need Presidents like Reagen? But Chris is Catholic and a *cough* newsman Chris has to know what Ron’s School for the America’s grads did to those Nuns in South America!
I think we need to get bloggingheads to start having regular talk shows every night where various bloggers hold online discussions about the day in politics. We can all watch online and boycott the cable shows like Matthews and David Gregory.
Weren’t those “liberation theology” nuns. I didn’t think the church cared what happened to them.
that’s an interesting response to your letter to the editor!
Mornin All,
tivo’d it just to see if they would run the 30 sec anti torture ad but didn’t find it on the portion we’d recorded - did it run or not ?
Condimustgo
Wasn’t it only supposed to have run in Philly?
I always let them publish my e mail address. I suppose I’m just a glutton for punishment! I have met some really good folks on our side through the responses, though.
OK, you are worried about what Justice the corporate masters may demand of her. McSame, on the other hand, assures us he will appoint judges that will work to
legislate from the benchoverturn Roe v Wade.So Clinton might make a bad choice, McSame promises it.
*whisper* Supreme Court
McCain will most certainly pick right wingers and Clinton will probably pick moderates. I’m hoping that Obama will get a Liberal on the Court. We don’t have any of those.
How many pledges did the immoderators ask of the candidates? Are they going to require H&O to wear pledge pins? Make sure they have the Wurlitzer-approved minimum number of pieces of flair on at all times?
OT: Per http://canadianpress.google.co.....efCmwGLTGA twenty hours ago:
I’m not sure how wonderful a bountiful supply of fossil fuel really is, since burning it inevitably puts more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere (but only half as much as generating a similar amount of energy by burning coal). Nevertheless, you can run cars and heat homes on methane just fine.
Yeah that is funny how the Pope at the time cared all about what the Commies were doing to his people back home. But Capitalists could do anything they liked to Brown People as far as he was concerned and that included any White American Nuns who stuck up for the Brown People.
I hear the Protestants are now stealing huge numbers of people down there away from the one true (snark) faith. I expect religious civil wars to explode all over that region in 20 years.
With the rich staying Catholic and the Protestants championing the poor.
Reap the Whirlwind
I love the flair comment. LOL
you’re probably right. thanks
The debate was the worst television product I have seen in many years…
any candidate who participates in another one of those aipac hit jobs
does not deserve a vote. Both of those fools gave cover for an Iran
war, a regional nuclear pact with Israel and Saudi Arabia… madness,
madness, we just lost another proxy war with China for Israel and nobody
noticed… ugly.
Good morning Cbl.
We need a judge in the tradition of and with the same experience as Thurogood Marshal. I don’t think there is a GOPer on the Bench now with those qualifications.
Amen.
mornin’ darlin’ - missed you by minutes :(
It gets that way around here too, bob.
I see my coment went blank,so I’ll try again.I was saying thanks for the link to ABC to complain about debate, also thanks for the 411 on professor on c-span getting reaction from people who watched it.I didn’t and with the information that I am reading and other sites I have seen I didn’t have too
Interesting…on the front of my Saturn, I have a picture of my family, a US flag, the Evangelical Christian bible, a picture of George Bush/Ronnie Raygun/God, a swastika, the RNC logo, a plastic rifle, all because I want to prove everyday that I love America more than my neighbors, see?
Spit.
What a bunch of fake patriots we have in our country. Next they’ll tell us we’ll have to wear red armbands to show our patriotism! Assholes.
Okay, going to work now. :-)
Remember to contact your local ABC affiliate today.
And the shows syndicated on your local ABC affiliate to explain why you won’t watch anymore
And….
you get the idea. Viral blowback must continue.
ABC web sites usually prevent my posts, or remove them after a short while.
So I am making it a practice to post those same comments in other places.
Here is what I tried to send to ANC News this morning:
Horrific “hit job” on Obama last night. Fortunately for America, “Charles” and George got hit by their own bullets.
It’s not that I think of George or “Charles” as intellectual journalists in the first place. But what I find reprehensible is the effect such trash-talking and insinuating questions by suppossed reputable journalists will have on the on-going election campaign dialogue.
With our economy, environment, and Constitution under seize from more than one quarter, to be asking inane, insulting questions such as the wearing of U.S. flag lapel pins as a marker of patriotism will surely become a classic case study in the role of corporate mass media’s role in the demise of our ability to arrive at any kind of consensus in solving the epic issues confronting the U.S., and the world.
“Charles” and George have made it into American folklore as the avatars of what happens when corporations decide who they want elected, and on what basis those leaders will be selected.
Shame on them both. I will now watch David Gregory at 6:30 PM. (I have never taken George S. seriously so I already find him irrelevant to my getting my news.)
I can watch opposing views being expressed in a civil manner. I will not abide an attempted political massacre by the corporate hired guns.
Do people really expect high priced celebrity pundits, whose paycheck is signed by corporate media honco’s and whose paycheck is dependent on their not understanding things they should understand, to moderate meaningful debates that actually inform the electorate? Gibson and Stephanopolus are members of the “inner circle” of the Courtesan Class, celebrities motivated by ego and the pathological desire to please their masters. If either Obama or Clinton are to be elected it will be up to the blogoshper to provide the necessary information to the American electorate. The corporate media is a lost cause until the media corporations are broken up and the “Fairness Doctrine” is reintroduced. Until then, expect more of the same from the media.
Just for jollies I checked the first 10 pages of Google’s image search, and damn if I can find a picture of John McCain wearing a freaking flag pin. Let’s ask him why.
Like many I have emailed ABC. I also donated to the Obama campaign for the first time EVER. I reached the tipping point when Charlie turned to Hillary and say “I don’t think Sen. Obama answered my question”.
I miss Peter Jennings.
All you need to do is go back to the Communications Act of 1996 supported by the Clintons. Last night was a thank you from corporate media to the Clintons.
