Today, Media Matters releases another report in its series on McCain media myths, documented fully in Free Ride. It goes to the heart of McCain's phony public persona of "do what I say, and don't look at what I do:" his cozy, long-term relationships with some of the biggest lobbyists in town, a lot of whom work directly for McCain's presidential campaign.
That's right, "the straight talking Maverick" is a myth. It's a fabrication meant to be sold by the spoonful to the masses.
To keep up this illusion, McCain needs a willing media which looks the other way. Based on recent reports of media suck-up-itude, "Sprinkles" McCain has that going for him in spades. Here's what all the fawning coverage overlooks (from the Media Matters report and Free Ride):
Even before his current campaign, the senator reached out to lobbyists in preparation for his run. A March 8, 2006, story in The Hill reported that “lobbyists say that McCain has been reaching out to K Street to strengthen his national fundraising network.” A February 3, 2007, National Journal article by Peter H. Stone and James A. Barnes reported that McCain and Mitt Romney are “working overtime to line up influential allies on K Street who can deliver supporters and campaign cash." The article reported that on “January 22, David Girard-diCarlo, the chairman of Blank Rome, which is headquartered in Pennsylvania, escorted McCain to Pittsburgh and Harrisburg to meet with influential donors and fundraisers. And on January 31, the senator attended a Capitol Hill luncheon at the Monocle restaurant that drew two dozen trade association leaders and potential allies.”
According to Public Citizen, McCain's campaign has more current and former lobbyist bundlers -- lobbyists who raise money by pooling donations from themselves and others -- than any other candidate....And a study by Media Matters for America has also found numerous McCain staffers or advisers who were registered to lobby Congress as of year-end 2007 or were previously lobbyists. The current or former lobbyists working for McCain include his campaign manager, his deputy campaign manager, his chief political adviser, his chief fundraiser, and the chief of staff of his Senate office.
For those keeping track, that would be campaign manager Rick Davis, deputy campaign manager Christian Ferry, senior political advisor Charlie Black, chief fundraiser Tom Loeffler, his Senate chief of staff Mark Buse, and a whole host of others we've talked about over the last few months.
Davis bragged about the many corporate contributions that McCain's team has sought from the very industries McCain is charged with overseeing and holding accountable from his perches on the Armed Services and Commerce Committees, saying that they are "very much in the friend-making business." That includes big tobacco and defense contractors. Cozy.
Can you say "all about the benjamins" but not so much about the integrity? Again, from Free Ride:
Unfortunately, such realistic assessments of McCain are few and far between. One rare instance came in 2000 on the Comedy Central program The Daily Show, when correspondent Steve Carell sat down with McCain aboard the Straight Talk Express in New Hampshire. “Senator,” Carell asked, “how do you reconcile the fact that you are one of the most vocal critics of pork-barrel politics, and yet while you were chairman of the Commerce Committee, that committee set a record for unauthorized appropriations?” McCain looked stunned, and after an uncomfortable silence, Carell blurted out, “I’m just kidding! I don’t even know what that means!” Everyone laughed. (Pages 107-108)
Politics is a dirty business, at least the way it is played in the Beltway. Pretending that McCain has clean hands when his highest-ranking advisors are shoveling the muck is both illogical and dishonest. And the media knows it. But keeping "Sprinkles" McCain happy is more important to them than ferreting out the whole truth for the public so that we can know exactly what is and is not on the table for the upcoming election cycle.
Take a look at this graphic put together by Media Matters of McCain's lobbyist ties -- and ask yourself why there has been repetitive coverage of bowling and orange juice and tears, and so little coverage of this enormous network of moneyed-lobbyist interest in the campaign of a man who is a self-styled, self-proclaimed anti-lobbyist kinda guy. Hypocrisy, much?
Especially since the media elites have known about these deep McCain/lobbyist ties since the 2000 presidential campaign.
Americans deserve the whole truth -- not just the finger-licking-rib buddy treatment that the media has been giving McCain. Hypocrisy on a signature PR issue ought to be a big story, if the media were functioning properly in its role of asking the tough questions. But, as Media Matters shows, what we've been getting is the rare glimpse of good reporting on these issues surrounded by a whole lot of fluff and nonsense. We deserve better.

So, Christy?
For McCrazy lobbying isn’t a hobby it’s a life long pursuit.
Morning, Ann — you are up early!
Good morning, Miss Christy. How goes it in WV-land? It was 36 this morning when I left for work — almost a heatwave.
Oh, and do take a peek at the Media Matters graphic — it’s really well done. Scroll your mouse across the page and there is so much information available.
Gorgeous here today — sunny, blue skies, and we are supposed to hit the low-70s by this afternoon. Sorry it’s still cold where you are!
Man, I am seriously beat this morning. The Peanut had a nightmare last night and crawled in bed to sleep with us. I spent the whole night getting kicked in the back, right around my kidneys, because she cannot stay still while she’s sleeping…but the “monsters” in her room prevented moving her back to her own bed last night. She’s such a sweetie, but ayyy-yi-yi, momma is tired this morning…
McCain: All the press are belong to us.
holy dante!
I know — it rocks. I’m gonna be linking that up for ages!
And, based on last night’s debate extravaganza, how many of us think that any of this will come up when the general election debates roll around?
*crickets*
If you are wondering who to boycott re debate…
oh, I’m sure it will be in the 70s here as well - if it’s 36 at 7:00, you can bet money that as long as it’s sunny, we’ll get into the 70s. Yesterday, it started out at 20 and we hit 70.
Ah, nothing like a consumer society.
speaking of hypocrisy - anybody else noticing the media-creep away from the initial disgust with the questioning at last night’s
GOP hit-job“debate”, and now focusing on Obama’s “weak” performance? On MSRNC this morning, Julie Mason (?) said the questions were just fine - the “real” issues *are* in fact flag lapel pins, Reverend Wright, etc, and that Obama should get over it, and deal with those most important issues…
ooo, I love those graphics that show all the connections - sort of the whole “six degrees of separation” - except John McCain doesn’t have any separation from these guys.
One small quibble, Christy:
To keep up this illusion, McCain needs a willing media
which looks the other way.which enables and pushes forward the myths, fully knowing what they are doing. That about cover it, ACE* Gibson?
* arrogant condescending elitist
You weren’t really expecting some regret or soul-searching analysis of where they went wrong from the current bag o’ media tricks, were you? Although Tom Shales did a great job with it this morning in the WaPo, I have to say…
Oh, and do take a peek at the Media Matters graphic…
So?
Looks like your basic “strong Republican candidate” to me…
Here’s my fave paragraph from the Shales dissection of the debate:
Ouch…good on Tom.
You weren’t really expecting some regret or soul-searching analysis of where they went wrong from the current bag o’ media tricks, were you?
Thank Dog for Da Media, otherwise, the poor uninformed general electorate would never know what the important stuff is….
Missed the debate but watched coverage on Anderson Cooper last night. Appalling isn’t a strong enough word. I really wish we could have a Survivor:CNN edition. The first one I would vote off would be David Gergen. I’m starting to cringe every time he opens his mouth.
easy big fella
Good Morning Christy and Firedogs -
rarely are we in the reality based community given straightforward answers to the complex problems we face -
and then there’s Free Ride - they truly crack the code of the McRib cultists - and frankly do it right here in this linked excerpt -
The 3 Foundations (1 page)
buy the book - understanding the basis of their fawning and that it is an intentional McCain ploy will at a minimum, keep you from pulling the rest of your hair out:D
Couldn’t sleep! Up before the birds this morning. Thought maybe it was that horrid “debate” last night. I really hate it when they ask about jewelry instead of substance or policy! I keep hoping that the Dems will start doing the heavy lifting on McCain instead of targeting one another, but no. We are still too busy concentrating on the distractions instead. Very discouraging and disquieting.
Why is a terrorist like a republican?
http://blog.wired.com/defense/.....cross.html
Digby’s point on how horrid and shallow all of these debates have been — and how broken the media is if they cannot lift themselves above the specious din for a presidential debate — was spot on last night. Truly appalling. And I have no idea how to begin to restore any balance or substance to the mess…
At least the Pope’s visit cut off the gasbags on MSNBC and CNN. A whiff of incense and the cablebots swoon.
Hunter over at the orangerie has an excellent piece, too, on the total public meltdown of the media.
How’s those gotcha questions workin’ out fer ya, ACE*?
* arrogant condescending elitist “news”man Gibson
You know they really envy the shoes… *g*
IMHO, last night’s hit job was somehow engineered by Glenn Greenwald to demonstrate the central point of his new book and thereby sell more copies. Everbody who is pissed off by what happened last night should run out and buy one.
right after they call their local ACE affiliate to explain why they will not have dollars for their advertisers’ products…..
HAHAHAHAHAHA Well, it’s true that Glenn could not have asked for a more direct marketing tool than the idiocy on display last night. Proves the entire thesis of his book in one fell swoop, sad to say.
With CNN and CNN Headline News and CNBC and Fox News and Bloomberg, there is a tremendous increase in air time for news and a tremendous decrease in real news.
President Bush made a promise to rebuild Lebanon on national TV, are there any updates?
wow… just got through skimming the liveblogging of last night’s debate. you-all make me so glad i missed it…. well except for the part where i was watching old video of bush.
If you want to get pissed off, read this bullshit, from Brooks…
http://campaignstops.blogs.nyt.....ex.html?hp
One small quibble, Prarie Sunshine!
They should both be able to point out that McCain’s campaign is loaded with lobbyists and name them and turn the spotlight on his two faced doublespeak.
A friend of mine once said “Sleeping with a 5 year old is like sleeping with a washing machine”
Do I sense they aren’t the only ones who envy the shoes?
And so painfully true!
No — waaaaaaaay to garish for my taste, thanks. *g*
Cheney, Rove et al. must be loving this stuff - even when it looks like they are losing - they STILL win.
me too sister ! - especially in comparison to the substantive discussion of issues here yesterday in the Kevin Phillips thread - damn
and jeebus, Christy - just saw your ‘Towel Snap’ post - oy
PRETZEL LOGIC
I would love to tour the Southland
In a travelling minstrel show
Yes I’d love to tour the Southland
In a traveling minstrel show
Yes I’m dying to be a star and make them laugh
Sound just like a record on the phonograph
Those days are gone forever
Over a long time ago, oh yeah
I have never met Napoleon
But I plan to find the time
I have never met Napoleon
But I plan to find the time
‘Cause he looks so fine upon that hill
They tell me he was lonely, he’s lonely still
Those days are gone forever
Over a long time ago, oh yeah
I stepped up on the platform
The man gave me the news
He said, You must be joking son
Where did you get those shoes?
Where did you get those shoes?
Well, I’ve seen ‘em on the TV, the movie show
They say the times are changing but I just don’t know
These things are gone forever
Over a long time ago, oh yeah
Well, if that’s all it takes, we ought to go buy tons of the stuff and send it to all the TV media with a message to go home, take a nice long, relaxing, warm bath and breath in the scents, and most of all, get off the stage and the public air waves! Do this at least until they are able to discover the difference between gossip and fluff and substance and public policy.
The more this media sham goes on the more infuriated I get.
-G
Thanks for another great post Christy.
I just sent that mediamatters graphic on to a bunch-a folk who should be able to make good use of it. ;->
Anyone else having trouble loading Emptywheel’s page?
Loaded fine for me, Neil. Which browser are you using? There have been a few hitches of late between WordPress and Opera, just FYI. But I don’t know of any other tech issues. Maybe clear out your cache?
NP on Firefox
Leave it to David Brooks to be the apologist for ABC News and their tabloid journalism. I bet he would be singing a different tune if they treated Media Darling McCain this way. Brooks seems like he was the kid that everyone made fun of while he was growing up.
Nope!
Brooks is a hollow shell. There’s no “there” there, and he knows it.
He must love the money, because the rest??? nothin
IE7. Worked like a charm yesterday.
Plus firedoglake loads lickity-split(sp?).
Weird huh?
ok, Emptywheel’s loading fast again. Thank you for your responses.
Other than, “Let it be done.” Were you expecting something?
I’m having trouble with everything at FDL this morning. New Comment refreshes are painfully slow at best and most often are failing with a message that indicates a “database error”. Full reloads of FDL pages are taking 4-5 minutes. I’m not seeing this behavior on other sites, just FDL. And I have a broadband connection (Verizon FIOS).
Ahhh, that straightshooter.
That warrior. That stalwart conservative.
That…
…Maverick!
Now if only Mr. Cheney will agree to stay on VP…
seems to work fine here.
My refresh has been slow this morning too.
Wow! For a change, I’m not really having any problems at all. Although this morning Firefox said that it had updated, and for some reason once my system came up, it said there was a problem. Before I did anything then, I rebooted, and I haven’t had any problems since. I’d try rebooting. Usually works.
I tried this out at C&L and got nuttin’…ABC NEWS seems to have ‘Steph Inflection’.
Didn’t see the debate last night- thank God. Did see a bit of the CNN analysis. The part I saw seems to have been brought to you by the Republican Party…Fat Ass Candy Crowley was her usual charming gooper loving self- and everyone else speaking was ripping both dems new ones with every word…
So much for the liberal media…
These people are in the tank for McBush
Scott Horton Interviews Michael Scheuer AUDIO, April 17th, 2008
Scheuer talks about strategy in GWOT and the beginning of the extraordinary rendition program under Clinton.
No, it’s not a reboot issue. I check the path to FDL from a server in Pittsburgh and it’s showing 0% data loss. However, doing the same check on the path from my home to FDL is showing a pretty consistent 10% data loss. Part of the Tubz are screwed up today.
I think that many of us still can’t quite believe how in the bag for the Republicans the mainstream media are. I mean we talk about the corporatization of the media. We point out how this pundit or that has had an incredibly successful career despite always being disastrously wrong. We single out reporters who do nothing but shill shamelessly for the Administration. We castigate media outlets that blithefully ignore major stories, that accept without question even the most egregious White House spin, and that are motivated by the philosophy that IOKYAR but it would be grounds for impeachment or jail if you are a Democrat. And yet despite all this, at some level we continue to feel they are reformable, that if we show them where they went wrong, document it, give them the evidence that they will respond, that they will change.
But as I said last night, the ABC Presidential primary debate was when the mainstream media finally jumped the shark. Up until this point the media would occasionally go through the motions of some kind of balance or fairness no matter how perfunctory but last night their representatives Charlie Gibson and George Stephanopoulos didn’t bother with any fig leaves of fictive objectivity. They came on with all the mindless passion and talking points that we have come to associate with the craziest of the wingnuts. The defining moment came when Gibson threw a tantrum and essentially stopped the debate until the candidates not only addressed his views on the capital gains tax but accepted them. Most Americans are little affected by this tax, but not Charlie and George. You see they are multi-millionaires. The media made them so. They no longer need to be paid to do the bidding of the rich. They are the rich. That’s why the media will never reform. Charlie Gibson isn’t a newsman. He’s a rich man. Everyday we get much of ours news from millionaires. Can any of us be surprised anymore at the blatant bias that we saw last night, that we see every night?
I liked to quote Upton Sinclair’s observation: “It is difficult to get a man to understand something when his salary depends upon his not understanding it.” But this is no longer really the case. Gibson and Stephanopoulos no doubt like their bloated salaries very much but they no longer depend or can be pressured on the basis of them. Their wealth makes them willing tools to the disservice they do us, to the propaganda, spin, and misinformation they feed us.
In its own twisted way, the debate last night was a cathartic experience for me and I hope us. The media are, to distort the words, of Lincoln of the rich, by the rich, for the rich. They may be replaced but they will never change.
Morning all. Do you think the rest of the media will give McSame a pass once the dems get a certain nominee?
Yes.
Thia has been another example of simple answers…
Can i get that info via tracert? How?
Twice this morning I’ve gotten database error message when posting a comment here at FDL but the comment takes.
Good morning! I feel super tired this morning and I had a good night’s sleep though up very early. Perhaps it is debate overload. I listened.
Hillary declared she would support Obama if he won. Her quote, “I’m going to do everything I possibly can to make sure that one of us takes the oath of office next January,” Clinton said. “I think it is absolutely imperative that our entire party close ranks, that we become unified. I will do everything to make sure that the people who supported me support our nominee. I will go anywhere in the country to make the case. And I know that Barack feels the same way.”
Asked if Obama can beat McCain, Clinton replied, “Yes, yes, yes.”
What didn’t feel right to me? She has spent the last several days repeating over and over “bitter”and “elite” followng like a monkey MSM and the Repug line. I don’t think I’ve seen or heard any candidate get more repeated, exaggerated , totally out of proportion, press and media condemnation as Obama. So I am suspicious of Hillary’s support speech. It rings about as sincere as her Bosnia tale.
I marvel that Obama maintains his dignity. It is quite a testament to what one can expect of him in the White House.
And, btw, I see “bitter” everywhere, separate from Obama’s comment. SFGate called this a “bitter primary”. Interesting how it is OK for everyone else to say bitter but Obama.
OT- since comments have closed on yesterday’s FISA action thread, here’s some feedback from the faxes I sent-
Robofax from DiFi thanking me for my concerns, but noncommittal on support. I could paper the office wall w/my collection of those, but continue to fax her on issues because We Are Watching What You Do, Diane.
Mary Landrieu’s fax reply was polite but noncommittal, so I called them this morning. Was told Landrieu welcomes my input as a former resident of her district. Got their attention by mentioning several close friends who fundraised for her brother. Told the nice voice on the line that Dems I know well in the district are hugely disappointed that Mary is sometimes a DINO & had to explain what that was. Was promised a personal fax reply from Landrieu; we’ll see if that happens.
Off to work now. Read you all later.
What really becomes of a country when the corporate media favors the 18% to 28% and not the majority. Russia, Germany, ????
for the first time, you make me think maybe i should have watched last night’s debate…. an historic moment missed? something like reading yoo’s memo - painful and yet so important it shouldn’t be avoided?
I might add that I just heard a report on last night’s debate from NPR’s Mara Liasson. It was a standard blow by blow account. No mention was made of the cheapness of the questions, the bias or triviality. So when I speak of the subversion and systematic distortion of the news, I definitely mean to include public broadcasting. Yes, there are a few islands of sanity, Bill Moyers and Frontline, but mostly this medium which was supposed to be an antidote to the mainstream has become the mainstream.
Assuming you’re a Windows XP user, check out:

Oh. Sure wish I knew how to do those types of checks!
Worse. People in the US still think our media is fair and unbiased.
Same offer for you, Ann. Response seems much better here right now though.
I would prefer if NPR and PBS took no corporate money and definitely no government money. We certainly got less for their money. If the people owned it we would support it more.
It is amazing the number of people who say, ‘I try to listen to both sides.’
As if they were the embodiment of fairness, not realizing …
The myths still blind us …
One could criticize the media for talking about trivia rather than important differences in the canidate’s views- except that there IS NO DIFFERENCE IN THEIR VIEWS.
Fuckin stupid ass election.
Wake me when it’s over.
pacifica radio (including democracy now! tv) is, i think, supported only by donor contributions - no corporate (or gov) sponsorship (as npr has).
I’m worried as hell for the lapel pin american flag industry…SELL SELL SELL.
What if NO ONE wore those little american flag lapel pins? I mean- what if we did away with lapels for instance. Could the country still stand? or is there a magic energy cast off by the millions of lapel pins that makes america great?
The Courtesan Class will do all in their power to see McCain elected. Look at the performance of ACE and Georgie last night. It will be death by a thousand cuts for either Obama or Clinton administered by the corporate media. The celebrity pundits cannot be reformed or shamed into doing what is demanded of a healthy and honest 4th Estate. They are beyond salvation. It’s up to the blogs to inform the American public, to give them the needed information to make informed decisions. It may mean going door to door to every household in the nation.
i see that c-span3 is scheduled to repeat last night’s debate at 12:36pm et (in a little less than an hour).
The reference to the Yoo memo is a good one. Those who will take down the Constitution will not be unkempt wild eyed thugs throwing Molotov cocktails. They will be men in three piece suits spouting endless banalities.
Pacific radio is still holding on as a public station. Whenever I am in the Bay Area I tune it in. Otherwise, I have NPR. Several programs I like but it certainly isn’t representative of the people’s concerns as it once was. Very tame. Under controll.
hey rw -
was so pleased you made it to the Kevin Phillips discussion yesterday - I discovered him through your comments in old threads - when it started I realized it was weds. and you might be at the golf course - could you believe how many questions he answered ?!?!? what a treat
Hugh,
Please consider cross-posting your comment 67 on the current thread at Glenn’s place. It would add much to that conversation.
During late night, we replaced the lapel pins with these. Far more
tastytasteful.Last night’s debate was horrible. But, in my opinion no more offensive than the October 30 NBC debate. Yes, a different ox was gored, but the same shabby, sloppy, clownish pseudo-journalism was on display.
The problem is that the electronic political media has abandoned journalism for entertainment. Unfortunately, the results for the American people, as the last 7 years has suggested, are not going to be very entertaining.
bom dia, pups
I wish Obama had asked the audience to raise their hands if they were wearing a flag pin and then have him ask Gibson and Stephanopoulos “Are all these people unAmerican? unpatriotic?
I don’t think Gibson and Stephanopoulos were wearing them either so I would have had him ask them as well “Are you unpatriotic?”
Pretty sure we can all see the difference in PBS and NPR since most of Federal money was downgraded and it is mostly coporation funding now promoting programming. It’s the Republican way..
Made in China. Probably has high lead levels. Made with child labor. Hummm. Guess that’s all American and the new American values. I wouldn’t wear one.
Flags are plastic. Raw materials supplied by Dupont (probably an oil byproduct).
or as drifty says - ‘bright ties and puddin’ soft tones’
