(Please send a letter to the editor of your local paper, telling them to get the word out about Bush approving torture — jh)
This ad, which will play in Pennsylvania after the presidential debate tonight, courtesy Condi Must Go
As you well informed blog readers all know by now, last week ABC broke an interesting little story. It was about how Condi Rice, Dick Cheney, Alberto Gonzales, Colin Powell, George Tenent, John Ashcroft and other Bush "Principals" all gathered in regular meetings in the White House to discuss and approve of the various torture methods being used against prisoners held by the United States in the War On Terror. ABC interviewed the president a couple of days later and asked him if he was aware of these meetings and he said he was not only aware of them, but that he’d approved of them. Moreover, he specifically said he had no regrets about what was done to Khalid Sheik Mohammed, who we know was tortured with simulated drowning — also known as "waterboarding" — which is considered by the entire civilized world to be torture.
As I said, we know all this. The blogs have been writing about it non-stop since last week, stunned and appalled at the picture of these high level public officials sitting around watching power point presentations about the efficacy of sexual humiliation and CIA operatives "acting out" various torture techniques for their approval. (According to ABC’s source, they went farther than the Yoo memos and mandated that certain techniques could be used in tandem to make the "enhanced interrogations" even more painful.) At the CIA’s request, they explicitly signed off unanimously on each instance of torture — torture which included many of the techniques described here by former POWs of North Vietnam. POW’s like John McCain.
They were aware that what they were doing was wrong, immoral. Attorney General John Ashcroft warned them that by doing such things, right in the White House, "history would not be kind." But they did it. The president approved it. ABC reported it. And nobody else in the media cares.
Since the national news is obsessed with the Pope’s visit, "bitterness", "duck blinds" and how and what Democrats drink in diners and bars, they are not inclined to pursue this. Or maybe they just think the top echelon of the Bush administration personally approving specific torture techniques is business as usual by now. It isn’t.
There was a time when many members of the press and many citizens of this country would rend their garments about what they would "tell the children" about sex in the White House. Oddly, they seem to be unconcerned about what to tell the children about torture being devised and approved in the same place. That tells you something about the provincial Village that runs our politics.
So, let’s see if we can go around them and arouse some interest in the rest of the country, shall we? Jane and the Firedoglake crew have put together a letter writing campaign to local papers to try to get them to look into this story and report it to their readers. Obviously, the elites of the national press aren’t going to do it.
If you have a minute and can write a short letter on this subject, we may be able to get some regular journalists and editors who aren’t so inured to Bushian depravity to help inform the public about what has been done in their name.

Finally, someone is organizing a response. Thank you Jane, Marcy, Christy, Digby et al. To the pens indeed!
Water torture.
The constitution says it’s a crime
The congress says it’’s a crime
The courts say it’s a crime.
And Bushie thinks it’s legal because he got a note from his lawyer?
Sure. It’s like the little permission slip pads you get from the elementary school PTA:
“Please excuse [President Bush] from [being punished for authorizing torture] on [all dates starting now]. Thank you.”
there’s no excuse for him.

Dear Editor,
As a person living in and planning to vote in the PA primary next week I am continually stunned that the media including your esteemed newspaper continue to harp on who is “bitter,” orange juice v. coffee, and any other insignificant shiny object that comes your way. The really big stories of the day have to do with the fact that the highest officials in our government have been orchestrating a regime of torture, which, if I’m not mistaken, is illegal both in our own various codes of law and in international law. ABC seems to be the only news outlet covering it. The President, Vice President, Secretary of State, former Atty. General and others have actively conspired to torture human beings and what have I seen in your newspapers? Nothing.
What illegal acts do these crooks in the White House have to do to get your attention?
Do you wonder why people like me might be bitter? It is because of institutions like yours who have totally misplaced your priorities. You have the power to save this country if you would only use it wisely. Please?
Digby! Thank you and all those involved in organizing this response.
Aloha Digby! I heeded your call to arms! With my post of Torturer-in-Chief at M&C
Bush stunningly admitted to approving torture. It’s been public knowledge for a week.
Per Emptywheel, no mention of it in:
NY Times
LA Times
Wall Street Journal
AP
CNN
CBS
NBC
Our media system is truly sick.
Dugg…:)
And, just because….
‘In a series of meetings at the Pentagon following last week’s outbreak of violence in Baghdad and Basra, sources in the White House say the Bush administration has become convinced that Pokémon have supplanted al-Qaeda in Iraq as the chief threat to peace and stability in the country.’

Pelosi and friends must think it’s legal too. Otherwise, they would do something.

Citizen Digby and the Firepup Freedom Fighters:
Welcome to the dogs’ den and thank you for givin’ us the opportunity to write an e-mail to the corporate media. Now the question is how do we get this issue catapulted into the Democratic campaign debate for this next week in Pennsylvania and beyond and how ken we leverage our numbers to put the heat on Pelosi to authorize an impeachment inquiry in the House Judiciary Committee?
It seems to me that jest initiating an inquiry in the Judiciary Committee would force front page coverage for at least a couple a weeks and the issue would be defining in the last primaries.
It is great to have you here…thanx again. How about a guest column from you now and then on one of your pet peeves or favorite dinner recipes?
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNITION AND REMEMBER YA DON’T COMPROMISE WITH FASCISTS!!

Heh, Redd’s post went *poof*…!
I’m not sure which side I should stay on, seeing as how your side has cheaper goods … *g*
How’s it goin’, eh ?
gotta teach a class tonight. This week we tackle Delilah. I wonder if I can find some parallels there?
Well, George had one of his lawyers write a note to another of his lawyers, telling him to write George a note to tell him that his lawyer said it was OK. Got it?
Pretty much how George produced all those notes excusing him from everything at his old school but cheerleading Which is all he does now, all he did as a “general manager” of a baseball time, all he did drilling dry holes in Texas, and all he did in every bar and watering hole in Texas, Alabama, Maine, Connecticut and Massachusetts.
I can’t decide whether George thinks this is all a game, or is so bent that he enjoys it, torture and all. When I recollect that he mocked and cackled at the plea for mercy from a woman about to die in Texas’ death chamber, rather than soberly reflect at the awesome finality of the state’s power to punish, I suspect it’s both, which makes him an occasionally polite sociopath.
If blogs have any purpose other than serving as a virtual, alcohol-free pub, it’s to help spread the word that our traditional media is about to hoist on us another damaged, falsely packaged politician.
I love that video, especially where it’s testified, “waterboarding is missnamed, it should be called “drowning torture” and in fact it has been called drowining torture”
man, I believe he reads me here at the lake, I have been saying that for some time
great post here
The loonie keeps getting stronger! I’m keeping busy with the wife way-laid by a bum knee and posting at M&C…!
His Popiness has arrived at church in the Popemobile- a fantastic contraption which displays him as if he were a present in a box. No sign of the Boy Wonder. Sally Quinn doing the play by play during the early part of the Popiness visit- but we switch to a real priest to explain the PopeSuit and the PopePrayers and the PopeFood.
WHAP!
The whole world is getting loonier by the day.
I guess we won’t be taking a trip to Canada this summer. Too bad.
Is the Pope an anachronism- like the Queen of England?
Digby! I knew you’d show up here eventually!
Down with torture!
there’s food made from pope?
is it called
“solent white?”
“soylent pope”?
“soylent holiness”?
“soylent eminence”?
hmmm, can’t come up with the proper “soylent”
I wonder if the Pope brought a journyman Exorcist with him?
I notice Darth is nowhere to be seen.
I posted this and sent out a notice to my list.
I will die a happy progressive if the full force and might comes down on these vile criminals and…..
I believe it will.
A million dead Iraqi’s are calling out from their cold, light-less graves for justice.
I do believe they will be heard by enough of the civilized peoples of the world that action will be taken.
Whether America is will be part of this remains to be seen. Are we the ‘good Germans…’ of HItler’s era or are we still real Americans ready to do what is right?
Ask yourself.
Ask your friends.
Ask Obama.
Ask Hillary.
Ask every elected official.
And act on their answers.
Heh, Will the real Digby stand up? ;-)
The PopeMobile is totally cool- bet Clusterfuck ends up ordering one.
They know better. They signed off on it also.
They criminals just as the cabal is.
They knew and approved.
Priest on the Pope Channel laments the decline of numbers in the nunneries–the Nun look is apparently not “IN” this year…hell, nice lookin duds if ya ask me.
Things are so bad that they’ve got people who aren’t even pretending to not fuck doin communion. Somethin bad wrong with THAT eh?
His will have tinted windows, thus obviating the purpose. Ever the idjit in a bubble.
I read that obama said he would definately initiate an investigation as to whether or not crimes were comitted by this administration
plays good as far as I am concerned
Is no one aware that we executed NAZI’s for the same behavior that this administration has condoned, and unanimously approved??????
nullify, not obviate.
Sheese!
Nazis tortured with ruthless abandon. Japanese tortured and killed US servicemen. Many Nazis and Japanese found guilty of war crimes, or not where executed or killed themselves to escape retribution. Many WWII Vets who witnessed the depravity of war must be “horrified” at the revelations and realization that the sacrifices they made, for freedom have been minimized by the actions of this administration. Ashcroft knew it and warned them all. But they went ahead and acted Like Nazis in clear violation of constitutional law. They must be held accountable. If not, America has taken the same path as “Silent Germans.”
You’re preaching to the choir here…! ;-)
actually, he wrote the note and got his lawyer to sign it
So, we all agree that waterboarding is the same as incinerating?
bom dia, pups
wonderful post, digby. I will do my part and past this post along to others in the struggle.
If there was some way to get a message to Obama to bring this up in the debate tonight then it would be seen by the masses. Any ideas people?
Why are my cable channels wall-to-wall skygod deathcult pedophile-enablers today? Must all Americans who watch cable news be subjected to this boy Nazi, all day long?
Love that Ratzi has re-introduced the Latin, it must make the altar boys melt.
Do you think it’s that their priority is to divert away from serious matters, to keep Americans uninformed, even dumb, so those in power, which includes the corporate press, can continue their greedy ways?
It’s either that or they’re out for ratings and know that it’s the trivial, personality, petty garbage Americans want, in which case we have no one to blame but ourselves.
Neither is a very good option.
Ashcroft was concerned only with the optics.
Unfortunately, These criminals will never spend a day behind bars- and most americans don’t really give a shit what they do to “Terrorists”.
Obama will not say or do anything that looks like “pampering terrorists”.
My pen has indeed been busy… I just hope these publication get off their dead asses and start reporting on the crimes Bush, Cheney and the entire administration have committed in our name… the fucking shame of it all! I am not as proud of my country as I once was and that not change unless these criminals are held accountable for these crimes.
perceptions “created” are never the realities…..
LMAO uh oh I probably shouldn’t laugh coming from a long line of catholics but then again, I refer to the big dowtown LA parish (home of the LA archdiocese) as ‘Our Lady of the Ugly Panties’
They’ve been given the memos on what to cover. That doesn’t mean that we can’t try to shame them into doing their jobs—not that it will, but it makes us feel better for trying.
I’m starting to get a bad feeling about the presidential election in November. McBush is kickin the shit out of Obama and Clinton in Florida, Ohio, Colorado, and about any purple state you care to mention….
staty tuned, maybe he will bring it up (his campaign reads the blogs)
A tad bit harsh, eh? Many of Shrub’s actions do parallel the Nazi actions… Renditions, Gitmo, …
It’s early yet. Our job is to spread the word about the Real McCain, loudly and often. Once people learn who he really is, we have a much better chance.
I totally agree. The circle firing has been in play. Once they start hammering McCain on the issues, nail him on his inconsistencies, etc. we will see some shifting
Yeah- It’s hard to believe that he’s doing as well as he is with his “agenda” of continuation of Clusterfuck policies- but I saw him last night on the Hardball College segment- and I had to admit that most people will probably find him more likable than the dem candidates..
Yeah, Presidents Dukakis and Kerry were doing the same thing at this point…
Dems need to take all the states Kerry took plus at least another…like Ohio….
As goes Ohio…..
Ohio ain’t lookin good at the moment.
what does likeability get you? likeability gave people shrub.
Done. Modified the letter, mentioned that we convicted Japanese soldiers for waterboarding after WWII, said I would hate to think of the soldiers from the local bases subjected to it (gotta give them a local “hook”) and sent it to all three of the local papers they had links for.
Obama will as he has shown through out his long and distinguished career as a great statesman……
Not do anything….Period.
1,814 DAYZ AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND…
Citizen Raven and the Firepup Freedom Fighters:
“So, we all agree that water boarding is the same as incinerating.”
That’s a fact, Jack…though they’re are apples and oranges they are both fruit and are covered in the same basket, so ta speak. Don’t get tangled up in rhetorical faggot hassles… there is a line somewhere in the sands of nature and humanity which if crossed putcha beyond both and it doesn’t matter how far over that line ya go er what action ya use ta get there.
Trust me, brother Raven, I know whereof I speak and I surely don’t wanna see you arguin’ from the wrong side a that line.
KEEP THE FAITH AND HOLD ‘EM UP BEFORE GOD AND THE LAW, THE FALLEN HEROES IN OUR HISTORY ARE WATCHIN’!!
No, see waterboarding that’s like surfing. It’s fun! Bush wanted to know at one meeting why they were letting ‘Tehhaists’ play Beach Boy songs!
Well…..
It could have happened with this group of Fascistii.
I’m sick of all the candidates.
Could we have another casting call?
that’s not a bad explanation, but i still think the most likely explanation is that they are covering up for the actions of the prior (D) administration. that would also explain why the MCA immunity went back to 1997.
i wish.

EPA to Bring Back Banned Pesticide Uses
Today, EPA announces they are revising their previous risk assessments and seek to re-register certain uses of these pesticides.
Today’s Federal Register — US EPA wants to re-register
certain uses of pentachlorophenol (contaminated with
chlorinated dibenzo dioxins/furans and hexachlorobenzene),
copper chromated arsenic compounds and creosote for
uses previously banned during the Clinton Administration
(note mention that pentachlorophenol poses cancer risks
for utility workers):
more here
That’s right, the Republican EPA is willing to sacrifice your mother, father, wife, daughter, son, brother, sister on the alter of free market capitalism. How many will be diagnosed with terminal cancer? Now tell me Republicans aren’t complicit in murder.
1. What time is the debate ?
2. Is there anyplace, preferably online, where one can go to chat about it ? *g*
Pesticides don’t kill people–People Kill People (like Tom Delay)
debate is on 8 P.M on ABC (tape delayed to the other timezones)
ABC is live blogging on their website as will be daily kos, TPM and possibly here? *g*
Rhymes with “FORE!”
It will also be live in the Central time zone
Digby says: “According to ABC’s source, they went farther than the Yoo memos and mandated that certain techniques could be used in tandem to make the “enhanced interrogations” even more painful.”
I attended a lecture at UCSB, Santa Barbara, in 2007 by Alfred McCoy who’s written a book on torture as currently used by the U.S. government although I don’t recall the title. Speaking to your point about the use of techniques in tandem. McCoy said that the U.S. government is using physical techniques in conjunction with psychological techniques, such as sensory deprivation. I don’t believe this point has been publicized or that the public is aware of this. I may be wrong, but I hadn’t seen this information before McCoy’s lecture. The combination effectively damages a human being if not destroys them.
That was the main point I took away from the lecture, but here are some others. I hope I’m not duplicating any information.
Military Commissions Act (9/06) is based on UN (?) resolution 2340. This Act exempted mental or psychological torture, and allows the President to make a determination as to what constitutes torture (I believe).
The US ratified the UN convention against torture, but applies to physical torture only.
Empathic interrogation was created by Moran who used it first. Empathic Interrogation has been used successfully by the FBI.
Hearing people including presidential candidates say we’re the greatest country in the world makes me cringe.

Thanks to RevDeb (I edited it slightly) and her stunningly beautiful letter – with any luck, we can say the kind readers in Fremont/Union City, CA are now informed.
Letters sent.
I mentioned this on an earlier blog, but Jon Stewart DID talk about it last night. I found it “interesting” that Comedy Central would be the first place to mention it after the interview! Maybe Cheney forgot to threaten them?
What a great site for letter writing! I sent three to my area papers. I hope you’ll use the site for even more issues.
I would also like to draw some attention to some blog postings by, ondelette, one of the commenters from Glenn Greenwald’s blog: HumanityAgainstCrimes.blogspotcom
He has some very thoughtful and insightful posts up, including one about the damage done by the use of euphemisms.
grandpa died last week, and he’s buried in the rocks
everybody still talks about how badly they are shocked,
but me, I expected it to happen, I knew he’d lost control,
when he built a fire on main street, and shot it full of holes!
Think of all the horror stories that the US has been involved in.
I fought in vietnam, Watched great people metamorphise right before your eyes into trophy hunting scalpers. Their humanity was torn to shreds. They weren’t responsible for their actions, the government was. Then their conscience hit them and their minds were mangled. For what?
The nature of man, no matter how you rationalize it, is repulsive.
You,
Who,
philosiphy disgrace
And criticize all fears
bury the rag deep in your face
Now is the time for your tears
