Mr. Phillips, The Romans, Spaniards and Dutch didn’t have one tool that we have to deal with second tier political talent: the internets. I see from your letter to the Times that you are familiar with their power to disseminate information widely and quickly. Do you see a role for the blogosphere in averting or at least softening the impact of whatever it is that is coming?

Very sorry to have missed this thread, particularly as I learned a great deal from “American Theocracy” and also “Bush Dynasty“. I won’t be able to read this book until May, but have it on order. I’m particularly intrigued by the problems posed by ’second tier talent’ in politics (a theme raised in comments 113 and 132), particularly in a post-Katrina world threatened by climate change. The risks posed by suboptimal decision making (by all political parties) seem treacherous given the gravity of the problems we confront.

Thank you very much for answering questions here. I look forward to reading your latest title.

(… and here’s hoping for a good run of Copper River salmon this year!)

This sounds like a good way to frame the issue, perris. In fact, I keep wondering why Democrats who are in favor of such changes don’t describe it that way more forcefully.

Of course, I’m not a good judge of PR strategy.

I’m sorry that I missed the discussion. I used to watch Mr. Phillips on TV and thoroughly enjoyed his ideas. I wanted to ask him whether his absence from TV was his choice or whether it’s because he isn’t being invited to be a guest? If it’s the latter I will certainly send emails to some of the Cable shows to encourage them to have him on as a guest.

Great post/author, David.

Thank you, Kevin. A true pleasure.

Was off to ballet class for youngest, but appreciate all comments, muchly.

I prefer thoughful, learning experiences to the rancor of political ‘debate’ when it becomes diatribe …

Just saying, thanks.

yayyyyy!!!!

thanx for sticking around David, I love your work I might add.

another pet platform of mine;

“A business has to pay it’’s own bills if we are to have a competitive market, just as a business must pay it’s rent, it’s heating bills, it’s electricity bills, there are bills they manage to get everyone else to pay instead of themselves;

just as a business must pay to maintain it’s own equipment, the health of a companies workforce is an expense of that respective company.

it is an obligation for a company to pay wages that will allow a family to put healthy food on the table, educate their young through college, enough to be able to afford health care for their kids, their wife and themselves, and be able to retire without being a financial burden on the rest of the country or their own children

when a company pays so little the laborer cannot afford these obvious necessities, what that company has done is transferred their expense to the rest of the country

in addition, when our country allows products produced in in countries that do not insure these obvious expenses are paid, they are producing product subsidized by the rest of us, that subsidy must be eliminated and the best method is a tariff

a tariff on all products produced by these corporations that export their workforce to countries that allow them to operate by externalizing their own expense”

this is framing for democrats, it takes the very best arguments republicans use and turns those arguments againt their policies.

again, thanx for the response, I thought I missed you and I will surely be purchasing this latest installment from you concerning our economy!

Well, of course, I’d want to see how that penciled out; it would have to be something we could do pragmatically in terms of revenues. But I certainly have no problem with seeking to lower taxes on the middle class and increase them on the upper income brackets. So yes, that’s an excellent idea worth looking into.

Not that I’d have any idea how to get Democrats to pay attention to it … we are, after all, mere DFHs ’round here.

man I came late to this party and do I ever regret not having a chance to comment and discuss here with david neiwert

I have a new pet project concerning the economy and how progressives should address same and I would have loved david’s opinion, hopefully he will come back and answer some questions that remain, mine being one of them;

I think a great platform for democrats to take concerning the economy would be to actually say;

“we definately need a tax reduction and the democrats plan to reduce taxes back to the level they were before reagan raised taxes.

reagan raised taxes, redistributed the burden to those that are able to carry the tax burden the least and that has always been a failed economic strategy that cannot be good for our country, we will lower taxes back to those levels before reagain raised them”

man, something like that would serve us on so many levels;

it would point out to everyone the media has been decieving us all along and reagan was far from “reaganesque”, it would point the finger directly toward the failed policies that have gotten us where we are today and it would take the “party that lowers taxes” meme FROM the republicans and give it TO the democrats
