If he wants to fess up and admit he is basically a political hack, that is fine with me.

It is too bad. He could be a good reporter. I recently read a few posts from some kind of campaign blog at the NY Times that I thought were good reporting and almost gagged when I saw they were written by David Brooks. Is that the same David Brooks? If so, he could do a good job as an honest reporter-analyst. But he more or less admitted, in my opinon, that in college he he decided to shoot for maximum success with minimum effort, and I think he has stuck with that decision.

Mind pretzels…

Brooks could be dismissed as little more than a snarky punch-line artist, except that he postures as a public intellectual — and has been received as one.

There are lots of other quotable observations that follow, but I spilled my coffee when I got to this one:

When, in 2001, Richard Posner ranked the 100 highest-profile public intellectuals, Brooks came in 85th, just behind Marshall McLuhan at 82nd, and ahead of Garry Wills, Isaiah Berlin and Margaret Mead.

Isn’t that the cue for Marshall McLuhan to chime in with, “The medium is the message”?
