A little bit of the night before for those of you struggling to make sense of the morning after: Fabulous Irish musician Peter Yeates and friends, performing as The New Shilling, doing it up brown on a little tune that is allegedly based on a true event. Seems that during the time of the Second World War in Ireland, the wood for barrels for alcoholic beverages was in somewhat short supply, so barrels had to be reused whenever possible, and so some cider was stored in casks which had just held sherry. The sherry that had seeped into the wood seeped back out again into the cider, thus creating a beverage of compelling smoothness that seemed like plain old cider but had a kick like a mule's hoof -- hence the name "Johnny Jump Up". Enjoy, and think of the fun you had the night before, or might be planning for tonight, or that you might have had a long time ago, or plan to have in the future!

Good Morning PW
‘Morning, Katy! How’s the new little girl doing?
Harkening back to those thrilling days of yesteryear, AKA, my college life, I worked in a liquor store. One of the little rumors of the time was that folks could buy so-called empty barrels in which the bourbon had been aged. I don’t know the process, but was told that it was possible to “sweat” approximately an extra gallon of whiskey out of the barrel.
Most barrels though I believe were sold to Canadian or Scottish distillers. US law only allows each barrel to be used once in the US but the other countries do not have the same requirements.
Just home from the hospital….. trying to get my son to get around to sending me pictures…. since he is busy taking care of both mom & baby following the c-section….
You would get a big laugh that our local KPHX radio station has put up billboards all over town with McBush & Bush pics together with “More of McSame” in really BIG letters advertising the radio station. Trying to find a link so others can see it.
That’s apparently what happened here, Dakine. The stuff tasted just a fine cider, with no hint as to its potency — until you tried to stand up!
and I’ve used whiskey barrels to plant the flowering Johnny-Jump-Up.
Hi PW!
Growing up in Ireland and England at the end of “the war” we were well familiar with rationing. Butter, sugar, milk, bread, vegetables and meat were all in very short supply. If we had not been on a farm I believe we would have starved! Now we try to grow enough veggies for the year and this year I am going to be growing a whole lot more as costs have gone through the roof. Someone (wonderful FDL!) had a great idea for growing spuds in cages so we are giving it a go this year to, hopefully, increase our production.
As for “enhanced beverage” we put cranberries, sugar and vodka in a container, leave it for a couple of months and end up with the most marvelous beverage which can be used in many ways.
Think I might dig out my fiddle and play a couple of tunes this after (after I finish cleaning the bathrooms that is)
Apropos of almost nothing, except that it’s the only time I’ve heard the phrase: A song (”Letter to Myself”) in the mid-90’s by a band called The Black Watch includes the line, “… and all my johnny jump-ups start to fade.” I never had any idea what it might mean until now — I guess maybe the singer was talking about being hung over?
Hello, Elliott! That’s funny!
Good morning PW.
Your post brings back a lot of happy memories. Gaelic Storm, the band that performed in the movie Titanic was performing in Dubuque, Iowa and it was at Five Flags Center. So crowded, that my wife who had just had a stroke about six months before, had to climb her first flight of stairs to get to the balcony. She did it, and one of the songs performed that night was “Johnny Jump Up” which I really liked on that memorable evening.
Your story behind the song, makes it that much more important. Thank you.
Nomolos: Have you heard of growing tomato plants upside down in hanging planters? It’s apparently a way to keep your tomatoes from rotting undetected on the ground.
Swopa: Could be.
Here is the McSame billboard…..
This Billboard is on main high traffic area …. there around 14 of them across the valley…. HAHAHA
KPHX Billboards
Katy, that’s perfect!
swopa at 8“… and all my johnny jump-ups start to fade.” -”I guess maybe the singer was talking about being hung over?”
or that all of the whiskey had been leached from the barrels?
(kinda like seeds and stems?)
No I haven’t but I will definitely give it a go. We lose a lot to various slugs and bugs so that sounds like a marvelous idea. I am getting very impatient to plant. Our garden is like a quagmire at the moment so maybe I will start some early tomato(e)s and let them hang out on the deck.
Katy.. what a neat picture, thanks for that
Get bad headaches from those things!
pw at 11–is also used when you don’t have garden space, or sun space is not where you can plant.
works great. can also plant other things that way, too. people use 5 gallon buckets for it. can set up hose lengths to hook onto to water if you can’t reach it. works pretty well.
use those moisture crystals and you have to water even less with containers, and osmocote to fertilize if you want.
i’m sold on the moisture crystals. just watch that you don’t use too much or when you go to water the plants in, the dirt slowly explodes over the pot…….really. volcano. dirt lava, science fiction before your very eyes.

this american life on npr is talking about the political career of jerry springer, they are describing the ’magic’ of how he thrived in cincinnati, why people liked him so much.
at least so far that is what they are doing.
i still remember his commentaries on the local rock station, every morning on my way to work, he has a lot to do with keeping my wonder and curiousity honed and alive when i was in a stifling atmosphere…
i will never forget his commentary on why we need unions. unforgettable.
i don’t care where he headed after that, i’ll never forget how many people he fed and affected for years and years without ever side-stepping and without wavering. he put himself out there every time he went out of his house. target rich, and still said what he said anyway.
worth a listen.
Thanks much for the billboard link, Katy. That’s a keeper, heh.

here is a research project to track bee populations in the united states.
they send you native sunflower seeds, and you count bees that land in a certain amount of time.
extension offices are trying to get the info out for the researcher.
Yup. I really suspect Springer did much of what he did/does on the “at least they spelled my name right” principle. It’s really about the only way a lefty can get face time on national TV, aside from attacking other lefties.
Hey, PW, I see Paw-lenty is giving a cautionary tale on what can happen if the Prez were allowed to have line-item veto…. a little political payback to that uppity Minn legislator, Sertich.
Democracy in Minnesota? Not.
Not when you can have the state version of the Little Deciderator.
pw–now they’re talking about all of the speaking engagements and how many times he shows up in ’small counties’ to help get dems elected………he says yes to everyone. he showed up for a city council race here, i forgot about that, they just mentioned it on the radio.
i’m tellin’ ya, he is magic……off the air, or in a commentary, when he talks issues and society, you can hear brains growing. i know mine did every time i heard him.
Thank you. I have now signed up. I am afraid that if I were counting bees last year I wold not have needed all my fingers and toes. Here is hoping.
Thanks PW for the info on hanging tommies (Mods “hanging” is OK here I think)
wow, i hate to be a comments hog, but wow.
i strongly encourage everyone to listen to the ’this american life’ show on npr this weekend. the first half is springer.
in succinct sentences, quotes from springer still sum it up.
imagine, a commentary i heard of his in the 80’s got me to be a union steward, got me to be one of four on the safety committee, got me involved in my own world around me in a way i hadn’t thought of before, and on the radio 20 years later, the same words i heard then and am hearing now are still applicable, and still inspiring.
not many are capable of doing that i don’t think. and the ones that are capable, don’t open their mouths and put themselves on the line….. for what? democracy he says. democracy.
an immigrant from germany when he was five. 1949. jewish.
That’s great! Thanks for posting the KPHX billboard.
thanks nomolos!!!!
beeeeeeeeeee well!
on one of our first warm days, one of my friends had her opposing sliding doors open in her ’sun room’-her animals opened the screens, no locks on them……
she had a bee swarm swoop in and land on her flowering plants, one was the ’fake’ dried goldenrod in a vase….(bees also like/see red and yellow.)
she had to put the plants outside, they followed…….was catching strays with cardboard and a glass all day long….
they hung out all day and then moved on looking for a new hive i guess.
was amazing.
What I wanted to show….. things we discuss on the blogs, how to name McBush… and how that message grows out from here…… to the progressive radio and then into a billboard (for that radio) but then the general public is exposed PLUS the so called MSM…. hopefully they will actually comment about them but then they are really good of putting their fingers in their ears while saying “LALALALALALALA”
Funny thing is that all but $100,000 of the $208 million he zapped was for projects in Democratic-controlled districts. Meanwhile, funding for House Republican Leader Marty Seifert’s pet projects, such as MnSCU, is largely intact: There was a token cut of around $4.6 million from MnSCU appropriations. However, Marty’s school is still coming away from this with $9.2 million in bonding, $9 million of which is for “science and hotel restaurant laboratories”.
The traditional media should always be referred to what they are in fact, the Courtesan Class. Undermine their legitimacy and save the democracy.
Heres-a-hoping . We usually grow a dozen or so very large sunflowers for the cardinals… they have such a nice “thank you” song
Progressives, liberals, intellectuals, free thinkers have been marginalized by the Limbaughs of the world and now the traditional media has joined in on the side of darkness. Out of fear, greed, ego, self-aggrandizement whatever the reasons the Courtesan Class is complicit and corrupted beyond redemption. They will continue serving the interests of the status quo and the moneyed elites. This marginalization is what all dictatorships do with those unwilling to play along. Because of this, without an effective response to the lies, manipulation and duplicity of the ruling elites the marginalized classes will either have been disappeared, silenced into submission, underground or living abroad. These times are more perilous than many of us are willing to admit.
Who could have anticipated….
Start with the CNN “news” of the economy…they’ve adopted Foxspeak.
Needless to say, we switched channel.
Oh, exactly.
hey perris if you’re lurking-one of your heroes is on bob edwards weekend……

HOUR ONE
Dissatisfied with the electric guitars sold in the 1930’s, guitarist and inventor Les Paul came up with what he called ”The Log.” It was a bridge, pickup and guitar neck attached to a piece of fence post – and it worked. Paul’s innovations made rock and roll possible and his playing got him recognized as one of the 20th century’s guitar masters. Bob visits with him at the New York club where he stills plays a weekly gig with the Les Paul Trio.
Bob takes a tour of the Gibson guitar factory in Memphis, Tennessee and learns more about the company’s most popular model — the Les Paul Standard.
Last night, during an interview on ABC News, the President of the United States of America admitted that he knew and approved of a program of torture directed (literally choreographed) by the committee of principals of his National Security Council:
— National Security Director Condoleeza Rice
— Secretary of State Colin Powell
— Vice President Richard Cheney
— Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld
— Central Intelligence Agency Director George Tenet
— Attorney General John Ashcroft.
And nobody is covering this major event. Nobody. So how does something go from “irresponsible speculation” to “yesteday’s news” with ever being today’s news. I suspect a conspiracy of silence.
Unless this nation rises up in indignation, history will not judge us kindly. The least we could do is to call for their resignations.
Contact the ICC!
I raise my cup of coffee in a toast to my fellow patriots wigwam and tw3k!
Great video too, PW!
Greenwald has a good question this morning - are we paying too much attention to what Yoo wrote and not enough to what was actually done. Could be.
Great idea, you had last night, of flooding the ICC.
I would disagree as it was what Yoo wrote that gave the others the “courage” to believe they could get away with torture.
Think of the reports of the torture meetings in the WH that quote Ashcroft on how inappropriate it is to be discussing the topic. They knew what they were discussing was wrong but Yoo gave them the fig leaf of cover.
He is an enabler of torture.
Here is the six minute youtube from KO which every low info citizen needs to see.
Bush Admits Ordering Torture! ~Olbermann (w/ John Dean)
Does anyone know if Bush made his admission on camera and where? We need to get it up on youtube if at all possible.
Agreed but Glenn seems concerned that because of the focus on Yoo that he will get ALL the blame and the others will get almost none.
VERY surprising article about Ray McGovern in the AZ Republic(ian)
Ex-CIA analyst will speak out
McGovern stated that there is a 50/50 chance of a surprise attack on Iran between Oct & Jan this year…
Wigwam,
Remember when the Clinton’s were accused of “trashing” the White House on their way out the door at the end of Bill’s term and the “grown-ups” were now in charge. Of course we all do, but my rage today is that this was done in the “People’s House” and the shame of this Administration will not be wiped clean in a hundred years.
The dumb ass admitted it and nothing is said. Oh wait, this is a Republican administration. Obama says something that comes out on the same day about “bitter” people and it is all over the news. Just like you said, “a conspiracy of silence.”
Sorry for the rant, you just touched on a raw nerve and the rant is not directed at you.
I understand his reasoning but with the news of the “principals” meetings to discuss torture occurring at the highest level of the government should keep it from all being laid at Yoo’s feet. After all, the order to proceed did NOT come from Yoo.

The Bush administration said yesterday that it plans to start using the nation’s most advanced spy technology for domestic purposes soon, rebuffing challenges by House Democrats over the idea’s legal authority
http://www.washingtonpost.com/.....v=hcmodule
In 2002, two of these states, the United States and Israel, ”unsigned” the Rome Statute, indicating that they no longer intend to become states parties and, as such, they have no legal obligations arising from their signature of the statute.[2][13][14]

since you guys brought it up–we aren’t members, so, not a party to the ’law’?…….however, we committed acts in countries that ARE members……so, can that be the way in?
look at the map on the wiki page………we transported and confined and tortured people in countries where it was illegal according to the icc list……and if we didn’t torture until they were at guantanamo, (guess cuba is not a member of the icc or we wouldn’t have built it there)we captured some and transported them through member countries to get them there.
wouldn’t that be violating icc?
remember when we weren’t allowed to do certain things (troops and who knows what else) through britain and we did? and were caught?
whatever happened with that..
Sorry about my previous comment. My computer was getting ready to crash (I know the signs..LOL) so I posted in haste. Here is a cleaner post.

Or, you could have clicked on the More News link inside the front page News box, and scrolled down the first page and found this story from the same source.
Howie’s upstairs with a truly progressive candidate, Joe Garcia, running in south Florida.
Come on by and ask him a couple questions.
