And the Olympics have taken on the uglier aspects of a political campaign. The protests of China's Tibet policies that have marked the progress of the Olympic torch around the globe measure how much the Games have been distorted into a down-and-dirty ideological battle...
What was once a competition of individual athletes of sublime quality has become a race for medals among the superpowers and a stage for fighting out the issues that statesmen and politicians cannot resolve.
Yeah, other than the Nazi's in 1936, the 1968 Mexico City Games, the 1972 Munich Games, the 1976 Montreal Games, the 1980 Moscow Games, the 1984 L.A. Games, the 1996 Atlanta Games, and so on, when have politics EVER intruded upon the Olympics?
Although to be fair, Broder may be remembering the time he was a young cub reporter with the early teen papyrus, 'OK-aeus! ' back when sweaty naked Greeks rassled [ed. note, not last weekend at Arianna's Blog]. Yes, we're talking back in the good old days, antiquity, the negative aughts. The ancient Olympics, about the time Broder predicted Demosthenes was poised for a comeback.

And then there was Gilda at the Olympics.
Staying with the “Mat…” name game, the viper queen herself, Mary Matalin, coming up on Imus after 8:30 ET. Given the ABC story Jan Crawford Greenburg broke that has since tsunamied through the toobz, whaddya suppose the odds are Imus will ask her about it?
Don’t know about you guys, but I sure remember that post-9/11 picture from the bunker with Matalin hovering in the background…wonder if that was one of those meetings? And how many “Principals” meetings she sat on the sidelines of.
Left up my insta-comment at my homeblog about the Greenburg story, workin’ up something on hunger in Haiti for later.
The crowd loves the post, attaturk — but let’s see how the judges’ marks turn out . . .

7.5? Oh wait — it’s the pesky East German judge . . .
Nope, no politics at the Olympics.
What do you suppose the IOC was thinking when it granted the 08 Olympics to China? And what was China thinking when it asked for them?
Oh, I forgot, “Who could have seen?”

Where is “edit” when you need it?
Next segment on democracynow.org is on Olympics torch protests. Up in about a minute.
Pointing out that torch is scheduled to go thru Tibet, including Llhasa, and expect even bigger protests & crackdowns then.
New academic book, “Nazi Games.” Torch relay was a propagnda invention of Nazis to have it go thru countries that Nazis intended to take over.
im sorry to go OT,but this was so well said, borrowed from huffpo

since bush has been in office.the top 1% of americans earned 21% of american income, an increase of $750 million per household earning $1.2 trillion more this year alone….. while the bottom 50% of americans earned only 12% , meanwhile the middle class is now the working poor………… only once in american history has that happened before and at that was the period prior to the great depression. furthermore, america is the only industrialized nation without nationalized healthcare. the biggest lobbyist against nationalized healthcare is the pharmaceutical industry. america now has, more people in prison per capita than any other nation in the world, the biggest lobbyist for longer prison terms on non-violent crimes is the prison industry itself.. generating up t0 $50000 per inmate.
nice,i read your link yesterday, funny how GRANDPOPPY ,Presscott Bush was a Nazi financier, and supporter of Eugenics……..they put the play book in a locked box, till his spawn took office!
1988 Olympic games in Korea led to significant permanent reforms.
i was thinking of s. korea 1988.
here’s hoping. need more pressure
the Godfather spawned 3 movies…can you imagine a great screenwriter, writing on The Boooooooooooooooshes?
iirc, 1987 was the key year in s. korea. time is running out.
is that true?
that is some friggin factoid if true
Guest on dn said time for world leaders, including IOC officials, to hold China to its bargain, is almost gone.
I’m just liveblogging. That’s what Minky Worden of Human Rights Watch said. I can’t vouch for its accuracy. But yeah, amazing if true.
I read somewhere just this week that Hitler’s boys came up with the torch relay… …it was great propaganda then, still is.
combine THOSE statistics with those of nationalizing petroleum and what we would have would be a middle class revolution and the reclaiming of our assets
those two stats should be combined
Here it is…
everytime i hear about the IOC doing something, it’s not good. haven’t investigated as i should at some point, but i have no reason at this time to think well of the IOC.
OT: Per the Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bakken_Formation
Okay, 300 BBbls, and we’re consuming 20 MBbls/day. So that’s 15,000 days worth, i.e., around 40 years.
Hmmmmmmmmm. What am I missing? Why are we fighting over MidEast oil, when we have a 40-year supply in Montana and North Dakota?
What? You don’t think that Mitt Romney cleaned up the whole mess in 2002? I’m shocked. NOT.
The Viper Queen steps out onto the running track of Imus Show scattering rose petals, agreeing with everything James said about Richardson, talkin’ about going out museum crawlin’ among the little people with her daughter.
Best news evah. Yes, they are movin’ to NOLA. Sorry, NOLA.
[Mr. S. turned the channel part way thru so there may have been a discussion of the ABC report, but mostly it was loyalty, blindered loyalty is more important than anything. Certainly more important than the 4000. Plus.

Watching the disappearing Olympic torch yesterday, confusion everywhere…what I saw was a the “Flame of Shame 2008″.

OT fom TPM but still about useless old farts
Due to the various investigations against Stevens and his family, his favorable rating is now only 50% while his unfavorable number is 47% — meaning that Senate Republicans could have yet another seat to worry about during a bad year.
interesting article from smintheus at dkos on ethnic cleansing in baghdad and petraeus’ propaganda. (with lots of maps for the map geeks.)
Due no doubt to roid rage and hormonal imbalance. The judge blames the finnicky scoring apparatus by Diebold.
Where’s EdwardTeller when we need him? The most amazing thing I’ve read about Alaska pols lately was how no prosecutions have occurred despite ongoing investigations.
Composing a funeral dirge for stevens
Well they have all the crimes well documented but cannot find any Democrats to dump the guilt on.
Yeah, really sucks when there are no D pols to blame for the political corruption.

Department of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff has dropped the bomb.
At a speech to hundreds of security professionals Wednesday, Chertoff declared that the federal government has created a cyber security “Mahattan Project,” referencing the 1941-1946 project led by the Army Corps of Engineers to develop American’s first atomic bomb.
According to Wired’s Ryan Singel, Chertoff gave few details of what the government actually plans to do.
He cites a little-noticed presidential order: “In January, President Bush signed a presidential order expanding the role of DHS and the NSA in government computer security,” Singel writes. “Its contents are classified, but the U.S. Director of National Intelligence has said he wants the NSA to monitor America’s internet traffic and Google searches for signs of cyber attack.”

bad news on columbia “free trade” deal.
must go visit Tim
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_TjyR_3mUsM
FYI — Pelosi’s office is disputing this vehemently, saying that if they wanted the deal approved they could hold the vote now and it would have the votes — but that they aren’t happy with the deal and that’s why there has been a hold-off on the vote to amend it, not fast-track it. We’ve been trying to dig to find out the whole scoop — Jane has been on this like crazy — and will hopefully have more details on it soon as we can…lots of cross-statements but not a lot of clarity at the moment.

Bush: 140,000 Troops In Iraq Will Be Next President’s Problem
AP/Washington Post | April 10, 2008 at 08:35 AM
——————————————————————————–
AP Reports that Bush will speak this morning to sum up two days of hearings on Capitol Hill between Ambassador Crocker, General David Petraeus and members of the House and Senate.
The Washington Post points out that Bush will essentially be placing the fate of all 140,000 troops in Iraq into the hands of the next President.

yaaaaaah, but you are well informed…..he is sucha miscreant
i guess NSA will see i called chimpy a miscreant….bad eugenics product
I suppose this will offend a lot of people, but the Olympics leave me absolutely cold, and have ever since we left town in 1976 to escape the Montreal Olympics. I can understand why afficiandos of particular sports want to see the best compete, but for the life of me, I can’t see why all the events have to be bundled together in a freeforall. The World Cup is my model of an international sports event.
We got left with a stadium that is too expensive to keep up, and too expensive to tear down, and not as beautiful as the Roman Colosseum. Lose-lose all the way round.
the point of sirota’s post is that the plan is to approve the deal, but to do it after nov. to avoid political fall out. i hope sirota has this wrong, but i don’t think there is any way to find out for sure unless the deal is killed outright.
given what happened on the peru “free trade” deal (and how sirota called that one too) and the dems history on this topic, let’s just say they haven’t earned my trust. i hope there’s a ton of push back and that the deal is really killed.
Mc Same and Ny Times….finally
John McCain can’t raise money for his campaign and wants to use the public financing system for the general election. He really wants Obama hamstrung by those spending limits, too. What McCain thinks doesn’t matter because McCain’s already gotten himself into legal trouble with the public financing system - an issue largely ignored by the traditional media. But, today, there was some progress — not nearly as far as we need them to go, but at least an acknowledgment that McCain has serious problems with campaign finance laws:
As for Mr. McCain, he has crusaded against the influence of money in politics in the Senate and has criticized Mr. Obama for hedging on his earlier decision to apply for public financing. But Mr. McCain drew criticism of his own earlier this year when he backed away from public financing for the primary elections. He initially sought those public matching funds, which come with limits of their own, after his campaign nearly ran out of money, but decided to bypass them after donations started coming in.

I’m not an Olympics fan either, but then I’m bored by spectator sports of any ilk. Rather do than see. WRT Olympics in particular, an added sour taste is that almost everybody loses. These wonderful atheletes all deserve to win. Those sports that are more interesting to look at, like ice skating, are always better when they are performances than when they are competitions.
Quote of the day, from Rahm Emanuel:
Iraqis “have got to have some skin in the game.”
No offense taken here.
I cried when President James Earl Carter boycotted the Soviet games.
Now that’s a President.
how about ,blood, blown out brains……..intestines and charred limbs…does that count as skin?
last tid bit
Knowingly violating the spending limit is a criminal offense that could put McCain at risk of stiff fines and up to five years in prison.
That makes McCain a campaign finance criminal.
Keep in mind that the FEC is not functioning because McCain’s GOP Senate colleagues won’t allow a vote on new Commissioners.
Given McCain’s shady dealings with the FEC and his attempt to scam the public financing system, Barack Obama should never, ever enter into any deal with McCain about campaign spending. And, any pundit or editorial writer who challenges Obama’s position is ignoring McCain’s criminality.
new rule;
anyone who thinks we need to stay in Iraq has to have a member of their immediate family on the front line
THAT would end this war pronto

Republican U.S. presidential candidate John McCain said on Wednesday he would not rule out launching preemptive wars against future enemies.

Yeah, fuck that fucking fuck Jack Johnson. Yay for the Dim Angry Old Man! He’ll bring back the White Man’s Olmypiad and Get The Belt to Jim Jeffries! Yay for him!
Hey, someone buy Broder a Brandy Alexander. If he won’t shut the fuck up then, throw his sorry old ass out.

Preemptive wars should be ruled out forever…………
oh, wait– did we not sign a treaty about that already or is the new precedent the one we set?
And the Washington Post wonders why the public is rejecting print “journalism” of the courtesan class? The Washington Post headed the way of the dinosaurs.
