Neither LBJ nor Nixon dictated the length of tours in Viet Nam. Nixon involved himself in the bombing of Cambodia but did not intervene in ground operations in VN itself. So now we have a military chain of command that goes from the White House directly to the field commander for the first time since the Civil War (ours). Clueless wannabes telling the sycophants how to fight an active insurgency. Yeah, that’s turned out swimmingly. I would imagine the Joint Chiefs of Staff are not amused. Anybody who thinks Petraeus isn’t Bush’s fair-haired boy isn’t paying attention.
