.
It’s been hard to keep up with all the stuff crossing my transom these days, so I thought I’d just share in some of the bounty of good reading that’s out there today…
– It’s looking like Republicans are hoping to cherry-pick 10 Blue Dog Democrats in their efforts to force a vote on the execrable Heath Shuler/Rahm Emanuel SAVE Act. (If you go to that last link, you can find contact info for all the Democrats at risk.) Meanwhile, in the video at left, you can see Glenn Beck join in the immigrant-bashing brigade with Heath Shuler. Gag bag recommended.
–Dan Rather has suffered a setback in his attempt to extract, by way of lawsuit, the truth about how the reportage of George W. Bush’s sham service in the Texas Air National Guard was buried by his bosses at CBS: A judicial hearings officer struck down the central parts of the lawsuit (namely, those naming his bosses at CBS). We’ll see whether this JHO’s decision is ratified by a real judge or has been already; the clearly biased CBS report here does not make that issue clear. Meanwhile, there’s background here and here on the Rather case.
– Speaking of Colombia, our friend Lee at HorsesAss reports that Republican Rep. Dave Reichert — one of the few congressmen willing to have George W. Bush campaign for him — is actually trying, in the wake of his recent junket to Colombia, to cajole Democrats in the Washington state delegation to cave to the White House and approve Bush’s "fast track" plan. So much for Reichert’s attempts to paint himself as a "moderate" and "independent," not to mention "environmentally friendly." [And it's just another reason to help out Reichert's challenger, Darcy Burner.]
I know we can hardly wait to get our hands on Rick Perlstein’s new magnum opus, Nixonland: The Rise of a President and the Fracturing of America,. But the first review is out, from Ross Douthat at The Atlantic. YMMV, but Douthat begins to lose me when he posits Daily Kos as kind of equivalent counterpart to Free Republic.
Finally, because no day is complete without a reminder that there really are racist nutcases in our midst, there’s this report about a man who threatened to blow up the Supreme Court because of the presence of Clarence Thomas, and likewise made death threats about a number of other prominent black men. One can only imagine how the prospect of a President Obama fit this guy’s worldview.

No wait … Isn’t it supposed to be:
So?
Hey David nice round of the current news!
Digg it
SO I guess I missed the consensus of SO
I still like it has a nice ring to it.
Seems like everyone is out to dinner?? Ah helloooooo
Seems to be what folks are making the first comment these days.
Incidentally, here’s the video I should have run with the piece.
Seems like we should do it every so often just so someone can tell us it doesn’t mean zero.
Poor Dan, I was relishing the prospect of some serious discovery.
Or complain about how it’s frivolous and demeans the integrity of FDL…
Dunno how many of you have read Jane’s book, Killer Instinct. I really didn’t envy her much of her experiences she relates, except mebbe getting to hang with Donita. But I positively envied her for having had dinner with Peter Gabriel, even if it meant being humiliated by the boorish Oliver Stone by association.
Also, the Gabriel daughter who sat with them at that dinner toured with him a couple of years ago as his lead female singer. She did all right.
Some news of note our friend Scott Horton has decided there is life after blogging… Dam I will miss he incite full writing on the abuses of the law that the DOJ is perpetrating u[pon this nation of impartial laws!
So…?
So?
Not sure what it means, but I think I am supposed to say I owe you a Coke.
Zed is dead baby, Zed is dead…
I agree with that one :>) But I still like Zed it has a certain zing to it and besides aren’t most of us a throw back to the old days!
Ah, getting all retro with “Zed” already.
Some of us go all the way back to “Fitz”
Free caffeine? Hallelujah!
I cannot watch that, nor this, from 4/1/08. Guy’s really sucky.
Not sure what to make of my AR Cong-critters who may be on the Rahm side of the Save Act.. but someone recently posted a link to a similar sounding bill sponsored by AR awful Senator Pryor.
S.2368
On top of all of this.. local GOPers are trying their best to get similar ideas on the ballot this November. Tis so very hard to discern between a Southern Democrat and Thug these days.
Zed came before Fitz, no? Fitz was during the trial, iirc.
My personal favorite is still “Leisure Guy”.
Is this the same Scott Horton or the other one? Interesting timing…:
“In 2003, Rumsfeld’s apparent disregard for the requirements of the Geneva Conventions while carrying out the war on terror had led a group of senior military legal officers from the Judge Advocate General’s (jag) Corps to pay two surprise visits within five months to Scott Horton, who was then chairman of the New York City Bar Association’s Committee on International Human Rights. “They wanted us to challenge the Bush Administration about its standards for detentions and interrogation,” Horton told me. “They were urging us to get involved and speak in a very loud voice. It came pretty much out of the blue. The message was that conditions are ripe for abuse, and it’s going to occur.” The military officials were most alarmed about the growing use of civilian contractors in the interrogation process, Horton recalled. “They said there was an atmosphere of legal ambiguity being created as a result of a policy decision at the highest levels in the Pentagon. The jag officers were being cut out of the policy formulation process.” They told him that, with the war on terror, a fifty-year history of exemplary application of the Geneva Conventions had come to an end.”
Sorry, here’s the link:

The “lone” racist really scares me.
Rahm really ought to get out and mingle with the populace a bit more often. He might notice that Bush’s approval ratings are in the tank.
If Rahm got out a bit more often, he might notice that Bush is a lame duck owner of a war going badly, not a victorious conquerer on his way to reelection.
If Rahm got out a bit more often, he might notice that the current GOP members of the House are
bailing outretiring, not digging in, because they can see which way the wind it blowing in November. If Rahm got out a bit more often, he might notice that BushCo has driven the economy into a ditch, the military into a deep hole, the judiciary into a maze, the Rule of Law into hiding, and the majority of the American people into the arms of the progressive candidates of the Democratic party.
*sigh*
Rahm really needs to get out and mingle a bit more often.
Nixonland sounds like a must-read.
I have, or used to have, a sparkly Nixon pin from 1960.
From Republican mommies and daddies, little Democrats often grow. ;)
I can’t be sure but here is link to his info page at Harpers.com
He has been posting on the numerous abuses by the DOJ for political purposes including Don Siegleman and the US Attorney firing b y Alberto Gonzoo
Leisure Guy!
Read through the comments first, then comment…
;(
Bueller?
I picked up this quote reading me some Thom Hartman about the term”fascism”
vice president Wallace in 1944 which penned for the new york times the following when they asked him what’s a fascist, how many, how dangerous
quite on point as it refers to this administration;
What is a fascist? How many fascists have we? How dangerous are they?”
now check this out and tell my my tin foil needs tightening because the following is frightening;
I am pretty certain this administration is using Hitler and Mussolini as a template for America, “the patriot act” seems as if it is plagiarized from Hitler’s “enabling act” and check this out, a quote also on Thom Hartman’s webpage;
now look, we know as a fact the president has “deputized” corporate big wigs to be our law and our law enforcement in an “emergency”, they can “shoot to kill” and they are promised no legal action will be taken against them, they were not instructed “if” an emergency but “when”
I know it seems as if the president becomes weaker and weaker with each passing day, but the more it becomes obvious they are going to loose their seat in power the more brazen and desperate they will become.
this administration has followed the template created by Hitler and Mussolini
knowledge is inoculation and we need to have this knowledge in case an “emergency” just so happens to occur
credit to thom hartman
David: I took a shower today and everything. I promise.
Geez, where is everyone?
Right here – just lurking like mad
you mad mad lurker you
I rather miss the Fitz days myself.
Lotsa linkies to peruse…
Ah’l be bahk! (in his very best Ahnuld)
;~P
I really was just thinking about Hitler and those awful times. The conditions are ripe, aren’t they?
Let’s see….I bet Bushco will produce either OBL (if he’s even alive) or Zawahiri just in time for Mcshitesunni is
appointedelected as our new fearless leader…soon to be replaced by Romney….wreak havoc on Iran and Syria, and maybe mess with North Korea….oh, and…..claim a cyber attack and institute Directive 51….How’s that for tinfoil!!!Nah. They won’t do that.
Same kind of “patriotism” , different delivery?
”And through the wire/we’re clinging like leeches…/And through the wire/we push our tailor-made speeches…”
Is it????
If they don’t plan on staying in power then why directive 51???
I wouldn’t put anything past this administration…
The anniversary of FDR’s death is this Saturday – he must be whirling at what is going on in the country he
saved. We need one like him now or a Truman.
The plan is coming together nicely.
US shifts enemies in Iraq onced again.
Now it is ’special groups’ that pose the greatest threat.
-G
I like the new aftershave.
Smells sort of woody and weedy. ;)
Yeah, I gotta definition of a frikkin’ “special group”…they can chew on…
What have you been smokin’? I just sniffed my pit and ’bout passed out.
;~P
KO says at the GOP convention the bars will be kept open till 4 a.m. I don’t think anything good will come of this nothing like giving depressed people a hotel room and a 4 a.m bar.
Ever notice how the enemies of the US have strange names…tooties and footsies, and Al-shegab vs Al-kebab, Al-Qaeda in Iraq, Iran, Somalia, Afghanistan and…well, you know…names the average person tunes out on….most of America has no clue as to where anybody “else” lives or how they live, or what continent they live on….Sigh…
Martians…and Green Cheese…I suppose that’s next.
“They” know there’s no chance in Hell they can stay in power. No Fucking Way!. They can see the writing on the wall. Paraguay or Bust!
My humble $0.02
http://www.dailykos.com/storyo…..104/493151
why is impeachment off the table?
Ding. That is typical of how they get you to side with them…food and booze.
with phone cameras & male hookers, it could get interesting.
…and rich twat
Because. Why? Because. Why? Because. Why?
Just Because.
Why?
Sure unless you live there wait a minute Doen’t Norske live there? Bwahahaha!
That’s interesting — St. Paul’s city council was strongly resisting this move.
“They” know there’s no chance in Hell they can stay in power. No Fucking Way!. They can see the writing on the wall. Paraguay or Bust!
Thats only if they fail in their quest to stay in power… I just don’t trust the as far as I could throw them… About this far “.”
they better not have layovers or it’s a war crime tribunal …
. . . crossing my transom . . .
Crossing behind me? Crossing my window frame? I can’t figure out what meaning of “transom” fits here. If he’d said “crossing my desk” or “crossing my path” perhaps?
Agreed they are a bunch of Alcoholic Monkeys with delusions of
grandeuradequacy.And men’s rooms :)
Will Congress stop these madmen? (and Condi)
OR maybe it is just a ploy to get Paraguay’s natural resources for their fat rich buddies??
that too.
Of course St. Paul’s city council resisted the move Senators Vitter and Craig are coming to Town can ex Rep Foley be far behind?
Sorry everyone. Stepped out for dinner.
BTW, I’m not sure that Henry Wallace is the most objective observer of fascism one can find. The Pantload le Doughy in his epic tome made much of fun of Wallace as an analyst of fascism. The truth is that Wallace was a lot closer to the real flesh-and-blood critter than the Spawn of Lucianne ever was (outside of his home life), but, conversely, his analysis is nearly indistinguishable from the Marxist view of fascism. And that view has in fact been long discarded as outmoded, mostly because it is not particularly accurate. (It’s also somewhat self-serving from a Marxist perspective.)
They are determined…determined..deter…mined…to not relinquish power…but they will have to…that is my hope anyway. Any other outcome is unacceptable to the very diminished American economic population…they have a plan…put McCain in and when he cannot serve out his term (he’ll be 80 at the end of 8 years fer Crissakes), they will install Romney when he is toast…President $$$$bags….
This must not happen. It can happen! We cannot let this happen.
One can only hope
someone say martians?
I have all kinds of visions of alcoholic monkeys…that is hysterical!
Bite your tounge! McSame 2008 will not happen.
Heh, heh…:)
Glad you read it so we don’t have to. Hope that you sufficiently rinsed out your brain after the fact to remove the contamination.
The book that lays it all out was written back in 1955 by Milton Mayer. They Thought They Were Free.
Rather sobering.
I’m biting, and my tongue frikkin’ hurts!!!
Sowwy!
Nixonland is going to be my summer reading on the beach …
LS, I really don’t think McCain can be elected. Look at the turn out for dems everywhere. Look at the voter registration numbers. Look at the excitement the democrats have and the monies being sent to dems. Look at what this loser (McCain) has to offer America. It cannot happen again. Can it?
Hey, you’re reminding me. Where is TwistedMartini?
Not in my mind…but 2000 and 2004 blew my mind.
that’s what I kept saying about dubya and dubya’s re-election and I was wrong
Zed is not dead! Damnit!
And I remember 1963 and 1968…shiiiite happens…
Flying
Monkeyser Chimps like in the Wizard of OZ.Darth like to wear a black dress sometimes….when he is feeling pretty.
Zed!!! Did I get it?
Yeah, but “Leisure Guy!” lives on foreveh!!!
;~P
Yeah, that’s a great book I’ve cited more than a few times. Everyone who’s serious about fascism as a cultural phenomenon should read it.
I know. I still have friends who voted for W in 2000, but I can’t get past people who voted for him again in 2004. I should be more forgiving?
saw an op ed piece today comparing Obama to Eugene McCarthy
Feeling pretty…oh..so pretty…worked for Hoover…but Dick…he’s just a jerk of a dick of a jerk.
Aloha, late nite pups, lasagna is in the oven and bubbling merrily along…!
i don’t think ignorance is something you forgive …
Nah…….
Uh, no.
Hmmmm…not….dynamics are really different…dynamics now are much more intense in a sense.
Don’t you all think the media is hyping the McCain popularity and his competativeness with the democrats in the race to keep people tuning in. Once the democrats decide a candidate, the election should break wide open. It will take the democrat to kill MSM’s love affair with McCain.
The neo-Taliban claim to have a new stategy for the spring offensive. Chopping off NATO supply lines. Claim they are gonna use so of the Viet Cong tactics.
NATO folks laugh and say they are just blowing smoke.
Red Cross says things in Afghanistan are not getting better.
We’ll see what happens as the time for the reported spring offensive draws near.
-G
Thanks. I remember when people first started saying that this administration (read people from the Nixon administration, and some from Bush 1) is fascist, I thought they were way out. Now I know that W has added more fascists to the equation. What happened to America?
Argggh!!! I went to far with the Snark I’m Blind, Blind I say Blind! I need some Brain Bleech Stat Cheney in a slinky black dress!
God the Dark Side of Snark is Ugly!
hope Santiago’s axiom doesn’t work here
Would someone please write an op-ed for the WaPo comparing John Yoo with Joe McCarthy?
Absolutely.
But it wasn’t ignorance. It was all about tax cuts, and selfish interests over the well-being of America.
or perhaps goebels
and just exactly what has changed?
Actually, my argument all along has been this: Bush and Co. are not fascists, not Hitlers or Goebbelses, but Thyssens and their ilk — people who enable the creep of fascism because it serves their interests. I think they’ve been creating the conditions for a later outbreak of the real thing.
But anymore, they keep undermining the differences so frequently I’m beginning to wonder …
Why?? They put their heads up their collective ass and never pulled it out…
Not sure that’s an apt comparison. McCarthy was kind of an egotistic megolomaniac. Yoo seems to be more like an obliging tool. But that’s my take on it and I don’t know that much about Yoo other than he appears to be evil.
true dat
They’re walking the walk, too…
I give up. What the hell can we do between now and January 20th if Congress won’t act?
OfT, Audio and Video of a US Marine at a check point just outside Baghdad.
There is no violence and the Marine’s comments are tragically funny.
In the unlikely event that they missed it, someone like Siun or Gorilla Guides might be interested in this. They also might see more than I do. All I see is the complete worthlessness of trying to occupy a foreign country. The Marine confirms this, because of the language barrier. I think he’s also alluding to what they see as their primary mission: “to be bullet sponges.” These people have to endure long periods of undending boredom broken only by bursts of life-threatening terror.
Bring ‘em home. This isn’t what my tax dollars should pay for.
“I have in my hand a list . . .” said Joe.
“We have in our hands a group . . .” said John.
Joe would have had no qualms about torture, but he didn’t have the clout to make it happen. John had no such problems, even if he was a tool for those with the real clout.
Interesting way to look at it.
Would that Yoo ends up like Joe did.
Thanks to Dave for guiding us to Ross Douthat’s review of Rick Perlstein’s Nixonland in TheAtlantic.com. Mr. Douthat’s critique starts off unseriously, transitions to analytical praise, and ends by revealing his reverence for Nixon, a bias he ught to have revealed as quickly as the one he attributes to Perlstein (a “decidedly left-wing historian”). Orwell would have told him to trust his readers and let the author’s words speak for themselves.
Douthat describes the “riotous” 1968 Chicago Democratic convention, but never makes clear his pun. He jumps straight to how well Perlstein recounts its television coverage, skipping the famously brutal treatment of demonstrators by Chicago’s mayor and police, and Nixon’s purported role in encouraging that.
He gives Perlstein good marks, especially for his discussions of Bobby Kennedy and Richard Nixon, but sandwiches that between too thickly cut slices of bread: Nixon and his times are over-researched and now almost boring; Nixon bequeathed us “domestic tranquility”, for which we should be eternally grateful. His condiments, too, are bland and lack unoriginality: “Nixonland is a historical narrative worth savoring—but one worth arguing with as well.” Then he adds the horseradish:
“[P]erhaps inevitably, [Perlstein] tends to be tougher on right-wing shibboleths” than on liberal ones….[he] is unsparing in his critique of the political failures of mid-century liberalism; I only wish he had meditated more deeply on liberalism’s policy failures…. But to do so might have required him to give Nixon’s Republican Party—if not Nixon himself—more credit for restoring domestic tranquillity [sic] than I imagine he thinks the GOP deserves.”
“Domestic tranquility”. Not how Sam Ervin, Frank Church, or thoughtful historians would describe Mr. Nixon’s legacy. He came after the civil rights riots of the sixities, the early anti-war riots, and the global student riots of 1968. He ultimately presided over quieter times, but his leadership did not lead us to them. In fact, Nixon’s legacy is the gift that keeps on giving. Dick Cheney is arguably Nixon II, the former aide who sees himself as the tough political “son” who won’t give in where dad fell down; who will leave America more prosperous and secure – at least more FUBARed – than when he found it.
Douthat admits none of that, instead remembering Nixon fondly, gelded of his paranoia, intensity and capacity for criminality:
Mr. Cheney is also a small man who lacks principles, but his corruptions and schemes are not “petty” or “penny-ante”, and that makes him a more dangerous man than his hero.

[emph. added]
Dave Reicherts claim to fame is that when he was a law enforcement officer he was instrumental in catching the Green River killer, although it did take around twenty years to solve the case. I think Darcy has a good chance to unseat him because Western Washington is heavily liberal, however, that area is tricky. He really is a know-nothing suck up and hopefully his career will soon come to an end.
…”One can only imagine how the prospect of a President Obama fit this guy’s worldview.”
But Obama isn’t Black. He insists he isn’t. He has risen above it, haven’t you heard?
