So it appears TIME magazine has come out with a "Top 25 Blogs List" and ranks the wingnut hate site ultra right-wing blog Ace of Spades as #10. That’s right, the Pajamas Media Ace of Spades whose two most recent highly informative offerings include calling Jack Murtha a "gold-plated douchebag" and "Barack Hussein Obama’s" (deceased) father a "hardore socialist."
You know — the same Ace who accused the woman gang-raped by Halliburton employees of making it up, who thinks approvingly quoting founders of domestic terrorists groups on the House floor is perfectly fine and who wanks to every OMG GLOBAL WARMING IS TOTALLY FAKE AND THE MSM WONT ADMIT IT HERE’S THE PROOF!!!11!!!1! story he can find.
That Ace.
TIME describes Ace as being "the conservative/ libertarian answer to the Daily Kos." Er, not so much, unless by "answer" TIME means, "gets less than a third of Daily Kos’s traffic" and by "conservative/libertarian" TIME means "to the right of Michael Savage."
I think there are two possibilities for this abomination. Either (a) TIME is completely clueless about the blogosphere, and just randomly cherry-picked one of Glenn Reynolds’ endless links to Ace because they needed a "conservative" blog to balance HuffPo, or (b) someone at TIME is a crazy drooling wingnut loon who thinks Ace is funny.
Actually, strike that — I’m gonna go with both.

What a desperate flailing grab for relevance on TIME’s part.
Banging head on keyboard…..Like Kos? OMG…
What about cash does the Ace of Spades make 1/3 the cash Kos does?
Huff Post as #1? There are some good posters there but they do the candidates’ horoscopes, Britney lastest scandal and lots of Hollywood stuff. Who cares? Not me.
Blue Texan,
Time magazine, in an effort to appear “balanced” must feign to the right from time to time. I understand they have been feigning consistently for twenty years. This is balance, for their reporters to tilt so far to the right they wear out one shoe before the other. Still, I want to know what is said about the floppy aces over at Sadly, No! before I make a decision.
Woohoo… AZ legislature overwhelmingly voted down the “Real ID” for residents ….. that it will be 100 degrees this weekend… back to our regular programming… :)
Can Time explain the methodology behind their choices? This sounds like an attempt to be even handed by including the highest trafic Righty blog they can find. Is the Ace of Spades the biggest Conservative blog, the most profitable?
If so I might be right. If not then just what metrics were used Personal Bias?
Both Time and Ace of Spades have no ability to think critically.
Fuck ‘em. (That would be a reactionary comment on my part.)
I’m with Teddy. I think both as well.
congrats. more states soon to follow
So what to do? Well, like everything else, if we want to force a change, we have to act. And in this case, it is easy. Like every other mag, circulation isn’t breaking records, how about BOYCOTTING the rag.Until we act, we can’t just bitch. BOYCOTT! MARCH!
It is hard to boycott something you never buy. But they don’t know that. I will email them.
I stopped my Time Mag lots of years ago. It was too right wing – the days of whiny Hugh Sidey.
congrats katymine – to what do you attribute this – vestigial goldwaterism ?
ps – been dying to ask you about AZ media and McInsane – folks are saying they’re a lot less fawning in their coverage of the good senator
Definitely all of the above.

Go to the Google Finance site click on 10 years on the stock chart TimeWarner stock had a 2 for one split Nov 23 1999, also in Dec 1999 th stock reached a high of $91.75
Today’s stock price $14.69 although they are giving out a 6 cent dividend.
I’m thinking Time needs to start reporting the news cause nobody is buying their
newsstories anymore.Really. HuffPo is just a page full of sensational, tabloid style headlines that just link you to some article in another newspaper. Since Ariana went all anti-Hillary, she has lost her credability with me. She should be impartial to be a “news” source. Whenever she is on TV, she just babbles and never gets her point across. I think she gives progressives a bad name.
OT – iran watch: some bits of news are starting to come out wrt to the deployment of the USS Lincoln (which was reported in these threads days ago) and increasing tensions:

could be intimidation propaganda… i just don’t know.
I’d like to see the criterion for the list…! ;-)

WaPo won 6 Pulitzers today –
Public Service Medal for Walter Reed
Breaking News @ VA Tech
National reporting, for its exploration of Vice President Cheney’s backstage influence;
International reporting, for a series on how private security contractors in Iraq operate outside the laws governing U.S. forces;
Feature writing, for Gene Weingarten’s story on a world-class violinist who, in an experiment, played in a subway station to gauge commuters’ reaction;
Commentary, for Steven Pearlstein’s columns on the nation’s economic problems.
Like many newspapers, the Post is struggling mightily with falling circulation and advertising revenue. It is going through its third round of employee buyouts since 2003.
TIME? Luce seein’ the sky with dim minds.
Guess who was President back when Time’s stock price was $91.75 a share? Funny you would think the bigwigs at Time with their stock options would have been screaming to have him back even as VP.
I look at the Main Stream Media and I see a classic case of cutting off your own nose to spite your face.

Time probably polled some of their internet savvy staff like Joe Klein and Ana Marie Cox.
My magazines – New Yorker, and New York Review of Books. Might seem strange choices for an Alaskan. Before they died in terms of quality cultural writing a decade ago, I also subscribed to the Village Voice. I don’t even thumb through Time when I’m in the dentist’s office. I prefer People or Field & Stream.
Half of those stories the WaPo should have written 3 years ago.
that is really one of your best. nice to have you around. :)
brought up from down thread…
Sorry OT, but the shit is hitting the fan.. going to be a rough few days.
We need to watch Israel and their ‘In case of ‘Attack’ war preparation/practice..
BAGHDAD – Hundreds of people fled fighting in Baghdad’s Shiite militia stronghold Monday as U.S. and Iraqi forces increased pressure on anti-American cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, who faces an ultimatum to either disband his Mahdi Army or give up politics.

Time proved it’s status when they hired cooper. if that weren’t enough?
agree. unfortunately these Pulitzers validate their invalid crap (Dana Priest the exception):
ok Len, how about now ?
Just thinking the other day that I hadn’t seen you around, and here you come up with this one. Nice!
Ace of Spades
icanhasshitforbrains
does time mag even READ blogs?? if so they’d know better….. sheesh ace of fucking spades?!!!
Kickin’ around on a piece of ground in my hometown.
No one told me when to go, I missed the starting line…
Fret not firepups. The weight of its own ideology shall crush it, we need do nothng more than elect more and better Democrats. And get some popcorn.
Ace of Spades was one of the sites promoting the “Who Killed Barack Obama” T-shirts that sold out real fast….
“gets less than a third of Daily Kos’s traffic”
Really? That much? 1/3 of Kos’s traffic would be huge. How much does that site really get?
Please, I beg you — never again use the words “woody” and “Ace of Spades” in a headline. I almost lost my dinner…
MSM media like Time-Warner really want the blogosphere to disappear…. cutting into their dwindling readership….
(*waving* to twain and btf)
The news is very quiet about this story I bet they will report a WIN on Tuesday when the General testifies I bet they
manufacturefind a link to tie al Sadr to Iran.Re Iran, tonight is the last night for the current group of attack dates. There is a less good group on the 12th and 13th and then probably nothing until around the next new moon May 4th and 5th.

BT great Post
more OT – my apologies to BT.
i actually put together this week’s list of congressional hearings, since it looks like a big week and the primary fever seems to have, at least temporarily, subsided. here are some that i think may be of interest for those of you who don’t want to go through the whole list (almost 100 congressional hearings scheduled for this week, a record for me):

Luce was all about who lost China when Time was started I believe seems like they were always a prowar rag. But Prowar ahead of profit stockholders are not going to like that. Still their lower stock price shows that their attempts to control what the masses think by controlling the media are failing.
and where’s TPM on that list ???
The generals and the Administration have shown for the last 5 years that they didn’t understand even the basics of Iraqi politics. BTW this is a charge that they have already lodged against Sadr. It’s a charge that could be lodged against any of the Shia groups and as for example the American allied ISCI with far more justification.
ABC News reported ten US soldiers have been killed in the past two days.
we still need a 2001 revision.

I’m just as irked by HuffPo being number one. It’s a heavily bankrolled zine that relies on volunteer talent and overrated celebrity opinion. They’ve earned their success (the rather standard, mundane way) but calling it a blog stretches the definition of blogging quite a bit.
And where’s the likes of Digby, The Daily Howler, TPM, and the Jane/Christy/Marcy-headed talent pool here?
Ace of Spades? Huffpo? Cmon, Time’s displaying its love of business, celebrity and conservative-leaning politics that goes back to its Luce origins.
I’d rather see a list from Newsweek, or better, Rolling Stone and Mother Jones.
Celebrating hate speech. How droll. But censuring Pete Stark and Moveon
Time worse then Drudgico for its pretense and reach.
Eric Alterman did a pretty good job putting HuffPo – and blogs in general, vis-vis newspapers – in context in this recent New Yorker piece.
Quite the top 25 list:
No FDL. Check.
No TPM. Check.
No Glenn Greenwald. Check.
No clue. Check.
Newscorp stock home of Fox news $19.57 Nov 3, 2004 a 2 for 1 spilt the price was $23.49 which meas Fox is kickin ass compare to Time they only lost a little over three dollars a share in the last four years!
http://finance.google.com/finance?q=NYSE:NWS.A
Right..upon further thought didn’t Time magazine name Ann Counter as a very important person. So this is just part of a pattern
No one from the MSM will even ask questions that force Bush pretend like he cares about the deaths. He doesn’t care because those dead soldiers were not from Bush’s family or from the families of people he knows. He truly gets away with so much.
repeat after mcinsane…… the surge is working … the surge is working and violence is wayyyyyyyyyy down doncha know….
????
Ariana has been against the Warmongers. Why criticize her when there are so many Politico reporters to flame? She may not be perfect, but I love it when Arianna talks dirty.
I like Arianna but Huff Post has too much bling now.
I’m longing for the good ole days when TIME put a mirror on the cover to say it was US who were the Persons of the Year. And now look…Ace of Spades in a g-string! Yuck.
I just don’t want to wake up one day this week and find that WH/Israel blew up the world, cause they figured that whilst ‘WE’ are wondering, What’s next? They went with the ‘Once done, its already done plan and they can always say opps/sorry/FU after the fact..!!’
‘Israeli ministers on Monday were to test their response to the scenario of simultaneous attacks from Syria, Lebanon and the Gaza Strip as part of a major home front defence drill.’
The five-day exercise, the largest in the country’s history, is being staged against the backdrop of increased tension on the northern border, prompting the government to reassure Syria and Lebanon there was no hidden agenda behind the manoeuvres.’
http://www.hindustantimes.com/…..el+cabinet
And this from the news ticker.
Hmmm, I might be a little leery if I lived in Sderot
‘On Tuesday, Israel will begin a nationwide emergency response starting with a 90-second-long siren that will sound across Israel at 10 a.m. (3 a.m. ET) except in the southern town of Sderot, a frequent target of rocket attacks launched by Palestinian militants in Gaza.’
The Iraqi’s do not exist in Bush’s or the Neocon’s minds they only think about What they want and how to get what they want its a manipulative narcissistic behavior pattern common to alkies, junkies, and gamblers.
The thing is time is running short to invade Iran the fighting has to be settled or quieted down a bit before the November elections.
In the newsbox: McCain in K.C.: If we leave Iraq now, we’ll have to go back
I will add on the positive side of the ledger that the HuffPo blogroll is what led me to FDL.
Along with the one about impeachment hearings.
You think McCain reads self help books? That would explain allot!
Hah!
That was a meme that I heard a couple of days ago by some Very Serious Person or other. Like most of these, it is stated without any evidence and with no one questioning it. The truth is that once we leave Iraq we are not going back, period.
What does it say about America that Ace of Spades with global warming denying and hateful false stories pulled out of their ass is considered one of our top blogs by Time.
Did the Neo Nazis and Klan refuse the honor?
Hi gang
so earlier on KO he talks about Debbie Wasserman-Schultz kneecapping BO by bringing up Jeremiah Wright—again. WTF is up with her.
And she had so much promise.
After the umpteenth headline at HuffPo being nothing more than pettiness about the Penn exit from the Clinton campaign, this one being about his downplaying it – yes, a headliner if I’ve ever seen one! – I suggested that, if people want actual news that they go to firedoglake or Dailykos.
I’ve since been banned.
The Huffington Post has become a shockingly hostile blog, totally anti-Clinton, and the venom directed at anyone who supports her is unbelievable. Not sure what’s going on over there, but it isn’t pretty.
What a very bizarre list of “top” blogs. I can haz cheeseburgers is definitely better reading than Time(ly)–which isn’t very.
i have yet to see anything that wright has said that is so horrible. have i missed it, or was this another fake outrage?
Thanks KO! Bill O’Reily is calling KO’s network a financial disaster and then he says that their making millions?
Dang can’t get financial numbers on Msnbc http://finance.google.com/finance?cid=3310210
Same here?
I hope Mukasey has lots to answer for in terms of where the money goes.
“Time” ranks just below “Cat Litter Fancy” and just above “Neo-Nazi Hairdos”.
apparently she had more ambition than promise – kinda like her candidate of choice
I wasn’t dissing Arianna. I was dissing Time’s calling her media outlet a blog.
LOL What was so surprising is the list didn’t have 24 right wing blogs and then FireDogLake thrown in to make their list look ‘fair and balanced’! They must have gotten a note from the Fuhrer to not be so obvious this time around. *sigh*
BTW speaking of things Clinton there was this interesting story about Taylor Marsh that a commenter gaiifonlong (sp?) linked to earlier today.
http://johnbrownks.blogspot.co…..marsh.html
I hope no one ever does a story like that on me and it is well written too.
MSNBC is jointly owned by MSN (Microsoft) and NBC (GE).
amen.
what happened to the blogging ethic of judging a person by what they have to say instead of who they are (or in this case, might be)?
Naw, it wasn’t faked. It was manufactured.
I’m betting Bill Gates is keeping the show on GE gave Reagan work.
I think that Microsoft pulled out of the business a while ago. News is not their forté.
Pulitzer eligibility for the new media is past due.
It doesn’t seem to be NBC’s either.
Oops, That’s just MSNBC.com that is partly owned by Microsoft. The cable company is separate, it’s owned by NBC (GE).
I don’t think the issue is necessarily anything Wright said. Sen. Obama certainly is not responsible for what someone else says. He’s also correct when he says that no parishioner is going to agree with everything their pastor says.
The problem, to me, is that some things Obama has said in response to this have contradicted other things he’s said at other times. He says, for instance, that had he heard the “incendiary” comments at issue, he probably would have confronted Rev. Wright about them. Yet he also says, in the same speech, that he had heard such rhetoric in the past, but there appears to be no evidence that he has ever sat down with Wright to discuss it with him.
He also said in his speech that he could not separate himself from Wright any more than he could his grandmother, yet according to Wright, he told him that he would likely have to do exactly that if he decided to run for president.
I think there are problems for Obama over the Wright thing, but what Wright said isn’t one of them.
It’s all of the fake outrage over his GD America tirade that was taken out of context. He was lifting up a long laundry list of things that the administration has done against the poor, against those in need, etc. Katrina, AIDS, lack of health care, on and on. He’s said nothing that I haven’t at one time or another. I just didn’t phrase it the way he did.
Good point
Saying the US Gov’t. created AIDS to kill black people is pretty horrible, esp. when it isn’t backed up with any credible evidence.
But Wright isn’t running for president. I don’t see how what he said is germane.

Don Seigelman on Abrams. I can’t stand Abrams but it’s good that he has kept this in the news.
The apathy over what the Bush “justice” Dept. has done is troubling.
dont know if anyone here remembers rev wm sloan coffin or the berrigan brothers – priests who preached as much liberation theology as rev wright…. rev wright was just following along in that tradition – all this fake outrage against him is just a smokescreen to bring obama down at least imo
Gov. Siegelman live now on msnbc
And the Obama side is trying to portray Hillary Clinton as a pathological liar who can’t be trusted.
Campaigns try to exploit anything they see as a weakness in the other candidate, and unfortunately, many do not care if they are disingenuous about it.
lol. of course, i should have known!
MSNBC is actually a separate company jointly owned by both GE/NBC and Microsoft.
I worked at MSNBC.com in its newsroom from 1996 to 2000. The Web newsroom is in Redmond, and the cable newsroom is in Secaucus. The cultural differences are as wide as the geographical ones. And the difference tended to reflect the general worldviews of the respective owners. The cable side was all TV-ratings bullshit all the time (lotsa OJ and Clinton scandals) and the Web side was run by a bunch of ex-newspaper folks, many of them from the Mercury News (we called them the Merc Mafia), who were more interested in in-depth stuff and the kinds of things you could do with the Web.
i’m not referring to the clinton campaign…. i’m talking about the character assassination done to rev wright!!
Not being religious, it is hard for me to fathom the dynamics here. My own take on this is that people should be judged primarily by what they say and do. They are responsible but only partially for their social acquaintances. For me it sounded like they were trying to turn Wright into another Louis Farrakhan. It strikes me as over the top. I think what comes across from Obama’s reaction is ambivalence, both personal and political.
cable operation has since been moved from secaucus to nyc as i recall
Luskin says Rove willing to testify…paging Marcy, loosehead, Christy
That was great, Hugh. Thanks for posting it. I thought this part was relevant to our discussion here tonight:
Hysterical. Did you hear that TIME? LOL
I loved John Brown’s update at the end when he posts about his life. Hysterically funny!
Is this one of those behind closed doors not under oath no notes and limited subject matter?
I understand that. I’m simply saying it is a political tool, rightly or wrongly. And all campaigns pounce on anything they think can be perceived as a weakness against their opponent.
omfg
The last few weeks have proven Hillary is a pathological liar. Are you not seeing that? Wow. It’s stunning how she’s making up fake stories to make her points.
‘Saying the US Gov’t. created AIDS to kill black people is pretty horrible, esp. when it isn’t backed up with any credible evidence.’
There are still questions about it though.

Well, this is they kind of hyperbole that I think is unhelpful and unnecessary.
Indeed, there is a news article out now – you can see it on Yahoo News – by the AP noting that what Clinton said about the poor woman dying and being refused medical care was actually predominantly true but that it had some confusion to the story.
No, I don’t think Sen. Clinton is a pathological liar (that is a clinical term). I think all candidates exaggerate and even lie on occasion and try to add color to their experiences and resumes. Obama does too. People need to calm down, I think.
having been religious, i think part of the outrage is over the idea that a person could attend a church and not be in lock step with the “Teachings of the Church.” especially if the teachings of the church were to think for oneself (not saying this is true of wright’s church – just don’t know, but UCC is certainly more open minded than some of the churches i have been a member of (UCC is way too close minded for me now-a-days, but i’m trying to put it in context).
continues to amaze me that americans dont realize how gov’t will do what they will to see how far they can do harmful things to citizens – gas into the nyc subway system… allowing syphillus to ravage black men to gauge the damage … just check history sometimes
They’re trolling for clicks. It’s the “Ha-ha! Made ya loooook!” principle.
For me, the topper was their “sample post” quote for Floppy Ace — a pathetic attempt to create a “gotcha” out of Obama’s call for a dialogue about race, claiming that it was bogus because of course we couldn’t talk about anti-semitism in the black community.
I don’t know whether the post in question was from before Obama’s MLK Day speech, or if Ace is just so woefully uninformed that he doesn’t know that Obama talked about exactly that in the speech, but either way it provides a perfect illustration of how unbelievably lame the blog is.
Hi, pups – doing a driveby – just checked out that list of blogs – what I’m outraged by is the inclusion on the list of “overrated blogs” of I Can Has Cheezburger!/s
First, I don’t really think of it as a blog – it has comments, but come on! Besides, nothing else gives me a quick lift on a bad day as a few pages of ICHC. It truly makes me LOL, a thing that doesn’t happen that often these days.
Sigh. Just another example of the un-kewl kids trying to pretend they’re kewl.
Hey PW, I think you nailed it; either that or they turned to Joe Klein.
I truly am offended (snark/snark!!) that no Latino-oriented political blog was included on the Time’s list. Okay, I am not offended, so as one ’smarty’ among us suggested, I shoulda did it myself. Thus, please be advised:
The Chicano Veterans Organization is going to establish its annual “Obscurity on the Internet” Award. Consequently, should you have any favorite Latino-oriented political blogs, send along to the info to our email address: info AT chicanoveterans.org, and we will post it up on our “Cactus Juice Commentaries” page, and moreover, the FireDogLake, will get the credit.
And lest we all tend to forget, this Lake has a wealth of excellent writing among its many, many readers. Needless to say, I am quite surprised that the Lake wasn’t included, but then Time has not been in pursuit of much “quality” for these past serveral years.
As such, my thanks to Blue Texan. Ya’ did good!
