…you might want to send Stephen Colbert an apology. And a few dozen roses.
Far from hurting the careers of the Democrats who go on his show, as both Speaker Pelosi and powerhouse Congressman Emanuel feared, a new study has found that donations to Democratic lawmakers appearing in his "Better Know a District" segment spike upwards rather dramatically:
Stephen Colbert, the host of Comedy Central’s The Colbert Report, claims that politicians who appear on his show will become more popular and are more likely to win elections. Although online discussions cite anecdotal evidence in support of his claim, it has never been scrutinized scientifically. In this article I use "facts" (sorry, Stephen) provided by the Federal Election Commission to create a matched control group of candidates who have never appeared on The Colbert Report. I then compare the personal campaign donations they receive to those received by candidates who have appeared on the program’s segment "Better Know a District." The results show that Democratic candidates who appear on the Report receive a statistically significant "Colbert bump" in campaign donations, raising 44% more money in a 30-day period after appearing on the show. However, there is no evidence of a similar boost for Republicans. These results constitute the first scientific evidence of Stephen Colbert’s influence on political campaigns.
The PDF describing this can be found here.
Nancy! Rahm! Go give Stephen an apology — or go On Notice!

Phx Woman!!
I hold in Rahm in extra special contempt. Remember Christine Cegalis…
PW!
Seigelman is on Abrams, saying Rove’s fingerprints are all over the case…! ;-)
Colbert Bump could be the new hip dance.
One of the most courageous acts of comedy ever performed!
Hi PW! This is so cool. I’m thinking Colbert is bringing in lots of younger voters. Colbert Nation!
Yes it was. Bush didn’t even see it coming. A work of beauty!
Pelosi may be the first woman Speaker of the House but she has proven by her inaction and her complete cluelessness that America deserves better.
Rahm and Pelosi need some new advisors.
Bush had a chance that night to act like a real person and all he could do was sit there with that “I’m 4 years old and I’m mad” face. He makes jokes about others but isn’t man enough to take it himself.
Her ineptitude has nothing to do with her gender, she is just another politician who desires to be amenable to everybody. Whereas Rahm is simply irredeemable, he is nothing more than a classic machine politician.
He was definitely sulking! 1 800 Wa fkn wa
Nancy and Rahm, you’ve got mail!
I suspect that Blue Dogs would get less of a bump.
Rahm would likely get a boot in the …..
I would bump Colbert.
Oh, wait….
Digg it, pups!
Step to the Left, Swing to the Right.
Claws in the air.
Rahhhhhhrrrrrrrrrrr.
Yep. I gave John Hall money based on his appearance on The Colbert Report, and I’m an Iowan.
Nancy Pelosi will go on Colbert right after she declares her intent to press impeachment proceedings, which is about the same time she’ll grow a pair. Which is never.
Because you know, Tim and Cokie and Andrea might say nasty things about her being [gasp] partisan.
Indeed!
Well, you know the difference between us is that she leads and we advocate.
Step to the Left, Swing to the Right.
Heh, One can only hope that she would become partisan and impeach the b*stards… The sooner the better! BTW-New post up!
Good for you!
I mean, really: If you can’t go on the Colbert Report, you’re a weenie. Most Democrats should have enough gorm to survive an appearance.
Wow, this whole ‘anti-semitism’ thing is getting nuts…Thought Crimes, ANY question of criticism of the government of Israel etc
Isn’t ‘anti-semitic’ not liking Arab Languages???
‘In addition, the report marks the first time that the U.S. government has made it a policy to apply the label of anti-Semitism to some criticism of Israel.
“Anti-Semitism has proven to be an adaptive phenomenon,” the report said. “New forms of anti-Semitism have evolved. They often incorporate elements of traditional anti-Semitism. However, the distinguishing feature of the new anti-Semitism is criticism of Zionism or Israeli policy that — whether intentionally or unintentionally — has the effect of promoting prejudice against all Jews by demonizing Israel and Israelis and attributing Israel’s perceived faults to its Jewish character.”‘

Dude, you saw it!
and then the pose like they did in Karate Kid,
you know with the knee bent and arms up.
Rarrrrrrrr.
(thank you.)
Far from simply “all publicity is great if they spell my name right,” Stephen Colbert humanizes the Congresscritters he interviews. He even got one of them — a Florida Dem — to repeat after him how much he enjoys snorting cocaine, a clip Colbert repeats endlessly when promoting the BKAD segment.
The non-voting delegate from DeeCee, Eleanor Holmes-Norton, is the paradigm for how these interviews should be handled. Any ‘critter who is invited should first talk to Eleanor, not Rahm. She browbeat Colbert around the head, accepting none of his premises and acting — but clearly acting — as if his persona was real.
Remember how well Huckabee did on Colbert? Also a created persona, and perfectly willing to interact at the persona level with Colbert. New style Democrats should beg to appear, and after this study, I bet they will. Money trumps all (even for Rahm!)
Rahm and Pelosi want to control the narrative of the candidates and the media to bad they never thought of creating a story people would want to hear. They are stuck on this GOP idea that the story can be boring and a lie if you repeat it often enough.
The problem with that is the Iraq war has destroyed so many GOP narratives with an opposing reality and more importantly the voters are paying attention now. Lies don’t work when voters are not fat happy and looking to blame someone.
Some basketball game on now. Think I will go watch. *g* Good night.
Of course she might be “ambushed” like the World-Class Moron Georgia congress critter who made a fool of himself not knowing the Ten Commandments after making a big deal about them. Colbert might ask her what’s in the Bill of Rights, and given her performance since her ascension to the Holy Order of Speakership, she might fuck up the answer, Jeebus knows she isn’t paying much attention to them with respect to the 1600 Crew and their malfeasance.
We have a Anti-Semitism special envoy???
‘President Bush named Gregg Rickman the first U.S. special envoy on anti-Semitism.’
I give a “Wag of the Finger” to Rahm and Pelosi. And a “Tip of the Hat” to Phoenix Woman!
Good one!
I tend to think it’s the New Media that has busted up the DeeCee racket. The smoke and mirrors games played by BigMedia have covered up all sorts of “wars” over the years and they got away with it then. Now we’re able to mount organized pushback against the B.S.
Still just taking our baby steps, but I think the cat’s outta the bag now. The next generations are growing up with this new dynamic so the New Media should keep getting stronger over time.
Now we do need to watch out as BigMoney tries to find a way to control this (Politico is one…Ruturd’s spawn are buying up all kinds of New Media), but as long as we all keep bringing new people into places like FDL, I think we’ll be OK.
steven colbert rules…… after KO ;o) btw whats up with jon stewart? repug guest after guest…..
OMG, I thought I’d never stop laughing when he asked that republican bible thumper to name the ten commandments! Can’t remember his name, but the freaking hypocrisy!
Westmoreland from Georgia I believe…
trying to be fair and balanced? ;-)
Heh, some game? Only the NCAA National Title game…! *g*
hmmmmmmm…. ya think? lol – good one revdeb
Gold Bars Luskin called in to Abrams show, according to Abrams, and said that “Sure, Rove will testify before the Congress blah, blah, blah…” Governor Seigelman was right, we must find out what all was done to subvert this DOJ as badly as it’s been. They need to find out who should have been prosecuted but didn’t get prosecuted, and who did, but shouldn’t have been. They need to insist that the Congress’ subpoena’s are not to be ignored, and they need to prosecute those that abused their power, and their positions as well. Jerry Lewis prosecution should be something folk insist proceed; Jeff Sessions may well have some prosecutable offenses in his background and there are others. If it can’t get done because Mukasey is putting himself between these people and justice, then Mukasey needs to find out the meaning of the words obstruction of justice, abuse of power, and contempt of congress means in regard to impeachment. He didn’t know whether waterboarding was legal; maybe he didn’t know you can’t stand between Congress and your own department without showing contempt for Congress or that the Attorney General of the US can be impeached. Or maybe he just didn’t think the current bunch of fluff Senators would actually do it.
Talk about dazed and confused!
Every Sat nite at the Beach Theatre on St Pete Beach FL for the last 200 years. It’s always an experience. Live band before. Far fuckin’ out.
That was a classic moment.
Crane.
And it’s the pelvic thrust
That really drives them in sa ya ya ayane.
I remember going to Santa Monica on Saturday nites, Nuart I believe at midnight to watch it. And the trippy part was the audience participation.
Who would have thought that line would have such meaning today?
Ain’t nothing changed. The audience is the best part.
Right. Only, this version would be the Eagle.
Exactly. Exactly, exactly, exactly.
OT but the AOL welcome page asks the question “Do you doubt Obama’s patriotism?” There back. I think we all know that the corporate media is in the process of manipulating the public to insure a McCain victory. Until ALL corporate media can be neutered the nation is in grave peril.
Gold Bars is such a tool.
I watched it in different states and the audience thingy was exactly the same.
Wouldn’t it be fun to do an FDL commenters version of the Colbert Bump?
Crazy, but it would be fun and funny.
Pipe dreaming.
And this is AFTER we reamed these bastards out for pimping such a bogus theme. Do they really want us to fill up their voice mail and e-mail boxes again?
It’s just a jump to the left…
Zep…Hell yeah! Dude could only name like 3 of the 10 commandments, even though he says he named 7 but the rest were edited out. Regardless, he says, “What better place to display the 10 Commandments…” than in a public building. Uh…that’s probably the worst place. He deserves to be mocked endlessly. I bet Charlton Heston coulda named all 10!

IMO it will probably be necessary. The corporate media has the memory, not to mention attention span, of a gnat. This is a war and not for one minute can progressives let up. We’ve been silent for far too long.
ot for any steve novick fans: a new susa survey gives him a double digit lead over the dscc candidate merkley in the or-senate democratic primary.
really good news.

Well, if we all got up together, say, three times a day and did that dance, it could be a healthy exercise against sitting in our chairs at the ‘puter all day. Ha ha ha ha.
Now you’re making me ROFL again! That was so sad cuz it was laughing at someone instead of with ‘em. Not really my style…
Agreed, but the formulae he’s following have worked for his clients so far, and that’s why they pay him the big bucks…I’ll believe Rove’s testifying before the Congress when I see it, and not until.
Prolly just another glitch in the system,
But, I can’t help thinking it’s
The Time Warp Again.
Damning with faint praise
Evenin’ Phoenix Woman and Firedogs -

Hi cbl!
Rahm is a WALL STREET wunderkind who got his and ran for the congress…
didja see this from AP…….
McCain’s campaign nearly succumbed from weak fundraising and overspending last summer. But he rebounded and bypassed public financing for the primary — a step that gave him more flexibility on spending in the early presidential nominating contests. The Arizona senator has been a leading proponent of limiting the influence of money in political campaigns. His decision to seek public financing in the general election appears to be motivated by a pragmatic realization that he would be hard-pressed to raise more money than the $84 million available to him from the federal treasury……………………….oy, tell Jane

My guess is, Kirk is livid and charged at the same time … what’s happening in Tibet is unconscionable. I’ve spent time among those people and they are the epitome of peace and tranquility at all times …
Are you referring to the protesters that were dangling from the Golden Gate Bridge? ;-)
((( CT )))
Was Kirk one of them ? *g*
Good question! *g*
Haven’t seen Kirk yet. I’m anxious to hear his take on all of the festivities too!
