Five more US troops were killed in Iraq over the weekend. Why is this still happening, St. McCain?
“We’re paying a huge penalty for four years of a failed strategy that I fought hard against, and I believe this [new] strategy has succeeded and will succeed and can succeed,” McCain said. “But it’s long and hard and tough.”
I’m getting pretty sick and tired of hearing how St. McCain fought so valiantly and bravely against Bush’s failed policies and criminal mismanagement of the war. It seems to me that there actually was a candidate in 2004 who was publicly opposed to Bush’s failures in Iraq: John Kerry.
Kerry was calling it a failure — not Bush. Kerry was calling for Rummy’s dismissal. Not Bush. Kerry was saying there weren’t enough troops on the ground. Not Bush.
So why didn’t St. McCain endorse him? Or, failing that, run as an independent against Bush? Or just sit on the sidelines in protest?
The press needs to push back on this revisionism and hold St. McCain accountable for helping re-elect the guy who’s responsible for the failed strategy — a strategy by the way, which continued for two additional years after the election. A failure that’s still getting our men and women killed, as St. McCain himself admits.
When it came time to course correct and hold people accountable for the failures in Iraq — the people known as "the Bush Administration" — St. John of Arizona the Maverick backed Bush solely to tee-up his nomination in ‘08. In other words, he put his personal political ambition above our nation’s national security.
Enough of the revisionism.

Anybody listening to Petreus & Crocker testimony? How big are their a**holes?
McStain,McStain go away
Don’t ruin my country another way.
Take your lies and your media too
You’ll soon wish we had never heard of Yoo.
Yeah, and speaking of paying what is the exact limit on this Conservative Credit Card you want to use anyhow St. John? 3 trillion, 4 trillion, something higher? At what point does the National Debt, falling currency and national insolvency not become a National Security Issue?
Mr. National Security Guy, any answers…? -crickets-
The lost art of the follow up question:
Can you name some specific failures?
Was Abu Ghareb a failure?
Was Paul Bremer a failure?
Was torture as policy a failure?
You say the US dare not fail in Iraq. Describe success.
oops, wrong quote. heh. bad macintosh, bad.

I think it is totally unfair to bring up Kerry in the context of McCain. Kerry was for it before he was against it. McCain on the other hand was against it before he was for it. See, nothing could be more dissimilar.
If McCain is serious about keeping our troops in Iraq, and also serious that Bush has done a crappy job, then why doesn’t he step up to the plate and say something? Why doesn’t he come up with a military strategy, or a mission, or some new ideas? As long as he’s just cheerleading for Bush, then he’s got nothing to add. Blaming the Democrats for losing in Iraq is hardly a strategy, or a reason for us staying there.
WTF? If “this strategy has succeeded,” what does it mean to say that it “will succeed and can succeed” ? Either it has succeeded or it hasn’t.
This man visibly has no idea what he is talking about. He should sit down and shut the fuck up.
And what ever happened to “return on success.” If we’ve succeeded, why are the troops home?
“Success” never seems to mean “lots of troops coming home.”
Petraeus & Crocker are Tuesday, aren’t they? Will be useful to see how the three Senators question…McCain, Obama, Clinton. All sit on the committee. Will Lieberman be there to write McCain’s questions for him? Maybe Feith can stop by between classes and pass him some foney-facts. Dubya doesn’t seem to have much to do these days, he could take a break from vacationing with Putin to lift up the hearing room table curtains still lookin’ for those WMDs. And if Condi really is trying-out for veep, she can bring along directions to the men’s room. Or get together with Vicky Iseman in the second wives club. Oh, wait, for McCain it’d be the third “wife” now wouldn’t it.
Prairie Today: Personal Prisms
McCain is a Pollyana. Repeat after me…McCain is a Pollyana. He thinks the Iraqi troops are functioning very effectively even thought thousands of them abandonded their posts during the Basra conflict. McCain is a Pollyana, he has hinged his entire political future on the Surge being a success so he has to make up success stories. McCain is a Pollyana. Keep repeating that McCain is a Pollyana. His campaign hates the label and criticized Jake Tapper at ABC news for claiming McCain is being Pollyana towards Iraq.
I think that is the one question that might make McCain lose his temper in a debate “If it has been a success, why are we still there?” There is no good answer he can give.
I’m sure McCain had some stern words for Bush in private. Perhaps he even used some of those he used with his wife in 1992 in front of a number of reporters.
No, NO, NO!!!!! He’s the best speaker we have as to why McBush is a bad choice, given that Obama and Hillary are still sniping at each other. The last thing we want is for him to shut up.
Boxturtle (He’s VERY lucky that neither of them has turned attention to him)
“I believe this [new] strategy has succeeded and will succeed and can succeed,”
More death, more death, more death. Is. Not. A. Strategy.
Here’s a strategy: “Go fuck yourself, Senator McCain.”
McCain’s denunciation of the decider’s strategerie is pure rhetoric. There are few options for a warmonger to employ that will represent any significant change (other than increased deaths). More troops, more equipment and more funding – that’s McCain’s war plan. Same as Dubya’s, but more.
My question to McCain would be, “Senator, the Iraqi people have said they want us to leave. The American people have said they want us to leave. Why don’t you believe in democracy?”
“Because I know better.”
I keep thinking nothing will surprise me but things keep doing just that. I can’t imagine a man speaking to his wife in that way – especially since she has the money. And why is she still with him – I believe that was the standard question for Hillary.
Hello Blue Texan
Here’s my take on this. The press won’t push back and we are asking them to do something they are not willing to do. So, where do we go from here? Keep this on the front netroots burner so it is a message constantly getting out there, daily.
Call McCain’s office enmass so they hear from thousands of us objecting to his revisionist train(wreck) of events. I think calling the cuprit’s D.C. office and his campaign office will let him know he’s not pulling the wool over our eyes.
People hate when they are told the truth, repeatedly, and have no place to hide. Like shouting out that the emperor has no clothes.
As for the press, let them know, too. Expect nothing much from them.
Our bud Cliff “Wingnut Destroyer” Schecter likes the Shrub/McLame hug photo as well. So much so it’s on the cover of his new book!

I can’t wait until we all can turn our collective sights toward McSame.
1,805 DAYZ AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND…
Citizen Blue Texan and the Firepup Freedom Fighters:
I spent the mornin’ drivin back and forth for an MRI and listenin’ ta “Big Ed” Schultz hammerin’ on McCrazy as “warmonger” and he’s gunna be all over the cable bullshit factories tanight with the same message. Now I ain’t an Ed Schultz fan but he knows what he knows and he knows how ta “brand” and “label” as he calls it in this case. I am gunna be really interested in how the multi-million dollar corporate shleppers are gunna deal with this former right-wing talk show host…and I don’t care if Schultz is doin’ it for the exposure, what’s wrong with a little exposure for the truth here. I think this may jest be the beginnin’ of the undressin’ of John McCrazy. As of today, the race for the Democratic nomination is the race for President…McCrazy is toast, done, basted and broiled!
KEEP THE FAITH AND LET’S GET ON WITH IT!!!
And he needs to be made to say it again and again and again.
How about asking McCain if he is also firing people running his campaign who present a conflict of interest like Hillary did with Mark Penn? If you are in bed with them at night you are not objective towards them in the day.
Is that like killing people to maintain peace?
“We’re winning in Iraq, I don’t care what anyone says. I’ve been there.”
Repukes learned long ago, and refined it under Cheney/Bush; tell a lie often enough and loud enough, the dumbass American populous will believe it.
I guess the problem is what the definition of “win” is.
“Ah got five rugs fer five bucks!” – Lindsey Graham, McCain’s BFF.
Hmmmm…lessee, an EyeRack that is democratic, peaceful, stable, prosperous, capable of defending itself, not not posing a threat to its neighbors.
Yeah, sure, we can engineer that precise delicate balance.
707!
McCain can’t afford to cross Clusterfuck- on account of he isn’t getting many contributions as it is- and if he goes anti-clusterfuck he’ll be down to nothin- what to do?
He’s not above (or below) criticizing clusterfuck if it will help him- and he will once the general election starts- but for now- he needs money from the gooper mentally unstable
Froomkin is all over it today:
bushco’s telling mcinsane that supporting the iraqi war is the ticket to keeping the WH….. oooooo boy!!!
This is all now nothing more than The Fallacy of Sunk Costs writ large for the massage of the Bu’ush et al egos.
The good news is that McCain is tying himself to Clusterfuck so effectively, its gonna be hard to undo. The MSM will help him untie himself from Cluster, to be sure. ….though, McCain’s warmongering attitude will not change. At 60 percent public opinion against the war, McCain’s stance is crazy, no?
But not if there is another terrist event.
We should assist him in that whenever possible.
Boxturtle (Helping McBush, doesn’t that prove I’m not a DFH liberal?)
I always say, if you like the war, vote for McCain.
If you are not willing to put your personal political ambition above our nation’s national security, then you are not welcome in the Republic Party.
Are you all amazed at how quickly and thoroughly word went out that the new talking point is that “Americans don’t want to lose.” Besides all the others that have been mentioned, Russert said it this morning on Joe Scar’s show.
The good news is that McCain is tying himself to Clusterfuck so effectively, its gonna be hard to undo.
McCrazy Glue
Are any of you actually expecting McCain to tell the truth about something? Or for the corporate media to tell us when he’s acting insane?
Most of the TradMed can’t tell what’s sane or insane any longer because of all the Kool-aid they’ve swallowed.
Howdy Dakine!
Yeah, we can thank Cokie for that one.
http://www.salon.com/opinion/greenwald/
Howdy Ma’am!
Every time I hear that woman I imagine her father turning over in his grave.
Americans are sick of the War, but I think he economic issues will capture the forefront of everyone as the impact increases (high fuel, food prices, unemployment, credit costs, etc.) The Democratic Party needs to link the cost of the War to the economic downturn. That way, they can speak to both issues in one swoop. That will intensify the anti-war sentiment and bring attention to the failed leadership of the GOP that is effecting everyones daily life and well being.
If we do that successfully, we’ll win regardless of any other issue.
Boxturtle (Obama, are you listening?)
McCain supported the invasion.
McCain’s criticism of Bush policies has been not enough military, even though military says that there is no mainly military solution.
McCain wants to continue with mainly military solution.
McCain is identical to Bush in that McCain cannot explain what we are trying to achieve.
So, McCain wants more of failed strategy. There have been minor points of disagreemnt with Cheney and Bush, but they are very minor.
Those are the key points in my opinion.
Let’s see Tax cuts fr the rich = 4 billion
Iraq illegal invasion/occupation/oil theft = 3 trillion
1 trill a year aint hay seed…..
oops tax cuts 4 trillion
Put your right wing in,
Pull your left wing out,
Your right wing in,
And shake it all about.
You do the hokey Cokie
And turn yourself around.
That’s what it’s all about.
Over the weekend I saw the YouTube “Babies for Obama” reported on by Judy Moes[?] of CNN. I heard on Reliable Sources in a conversation with the young politico blogger that YouTube is the megaphone of the MSM because a major portion of what’s on YouTube originated in the MSM and thus it gives them a bigger audience. And Brokaw has noted he mixes Internet reading, places like politico, with trad print.
Clearly, we have an opportunity zone we need to start workin’. “Mini-docs” or other video-collages to get our message out. The audience, the numbers are there.
Rather than talk about what the Democratic party or individual candidates should or shouldn’t do, can or can’t do, let’s talk about what we can do. Contemptible Cokie and Russethead and their ilk are irredeemable roadblocks…so let’s go around ‘em, direct to the people.
I think that the public already has them very well linked. They are ahead of pundits and corporate media in this as in other ways. But, we have to counter the propaganda, so public does not wander from the truth.
cokie = straw woman for DLC
McCain will soon say “I fought hard against Bush’s economic failures by making his tax cuts for me and him permanent.”
It’s been awhile, but I’m pleased to have to adjust the track lighting.
Please forgive the correction
forgiven and applauded
I may dim from time to time, but no danger of becoming a CFL…
Hmmm! I wonder if Senator McCain isn’t mentioning his stepson being in Iraq because he’s going to use that “sacrifice” down the road when he asks all Americans to share in the sacrifice of creating the “bigger military” he’s talking about.
It’s be a great talking point for bringing back the draft to support his 100-year occupation, and all the other things he says we need the military for.
Next up…Iran!
Actually I believe it is his son, not his step-son who is the Marine that the NY Times did the story on yesterday.
I want to nominate the current administration for “meanest Presidency of the past 100 years.”
Meanest to the troops (shall I count the ways?)
Meanest to the poor and middle classes
Meanest to all minority groups
Meanest towards future generations who will have to pay for Bush’s War
Meanest towards our “allies”
… and guilty of attempted meanness towards
* future social security recipients
…ummm, who have I forgotten?
Bob in HI
Like all of us, he had to choose between one or the other. That Bush has been bad does not show that Kerry would not have been worse. And I do not see lots of troops coming home. I just see more and more tragedies happen in Iraq. And I also know how billions of dollars were wasted in Iraq that Joseph E. Stiglitz told us: http://dealstudio.com/searchde…..038;ru=279 , and it seems that the Bush administration makes no mention of the long term costs of the injured soldiers returning from Iraq.
That first part looks awfully familiar…
McCain wasn’t hugging Bush! He was trying to hold him back!
