It would be hard to imagine anything more politically satisfying than seeing Bush's #1 Senate obstructionist, Mitch McConnell, defeated in his re-election bid this November. Back in February we had a little Blue America session with a man claiming he wanted to run against McConnell, Andrew Horne. It was the only candidate chat we've ever had where we didn't endorse the candidate or put him on our Blue America page. Horne seemed ok but... there was something that wasn't quite right. And, sure enough, a few days after our session, he pulled out of the race under odd circumstances and 2 days ago he endorsed the man he had denigrated and castigated right here. I hope he was rewarded handsomely enough to sleep at night.
Fortunately there is a progressive Democrat running against McConnell-- Greg Fischer, who I've been talking with on the phone and corresponding with for a couple of months. And Greg has won Blue America's endorsement and is on our Blue America page (which I hope you'll visit and make use of to help defeat LunsfordMcConnell).
Before Greg can get to McConnell, he has to take on one of McConnell's long-time allies, a fake Democrat many of us will remember from when he tried defeating first Ben Chandler and then, last year, Steve Beshear in gubernatorial primaries in which Kentucky voters, smelling a Republican in Democrat's clothing, firmly rebuffed him both times-- although not until he had spent $14 million. Don't cry for him; he's stinkin' rich. Which is why he has a powerful ally this time, a senator who has a nose for the smell of money as acute as McConnell's; yep, the Kentucky version of Zell Miller/Joe Lieberman is being pushed by... Chuck Schumer.
It's hard to imagine that there's anyone who reads any of the Blue America blogs who doesn't understand why Mitch McConnell is one of the worst members of the U.S. Senate. But for anyone who's just accidentally wandered in here looking for Barack Obama's bowling score, here are some key points to remember from now until November:
On the Economy:
• McConnell voted NO on repealing the tax subsidy for companies that move U.S. jobs offshore.
• Voted against the Temporary Relief Act of 2007 that would have provided 23 million middle-class families with more than $50 billion in tax relief by protecting them from paying the Alternative Minimum Tax.
• Voted NO on increasing tax deductions for college tuition.
• Voted to block the Foreclosure Prevention Act in February and yesterday caved into pressure and voted to negotiate with the Senate Democrats on compromise legislation.
• Has a lifetime 11% rating from the AFL-CIO.On Health Care:
• McConnell voted NO on expanding SCHIP eligibility.
• He voted against allowing Medicare to negotiate prescription drug prices just as the Veterans Administration presently does.
• Supports President Bush's health care policy of personal Health Savings Accounts. On Iraq:
• Last July he led an all-night filibuster in favor of an open-ended commitment in Iraq.
• Last September he blocked the proposal, introduced by Senator Webb (D-VA), that would have added time between deployments, forced the withdrawal of troops on a substantially swifter timeline and protected troops from serving protracted and debilitating deployments.
• Has continued to block legislation to withdrawal our troops from Iraq.
That's why Greg is running for office. I'm going to let Greg, who-- like Lunsford-- hasn't held elective office, speak for himself on the issues. He fits the Blue America requirements of advocating a safe and speedy withdrawal from Iraq, favoring privacy and choice, favoring equality for all Americans, and favoring real campaign finance reform.
His positions on health care come out of his business experience. And it was his business experience that attracted me to his candidacy, since it was something I was able to assess in terms of my own experience. Like Greg, I founded a small company. Each of us also ran large companies. I learned early on that the most successful way to run a business is to run it for the long term, not just to squeeze out short term profits. A business run with employees, customers, shareholders and the community in mind is a business to be proud of and is the kind of business that succeeds. It's the way I ran my company and it's the way Greg runs his.
Lunsford's business history is a nightmare of lawsuits, Medicare fraud, government raids and bankruptcies. Lunsford has a record of ethics questions to rival McConnell's own. And as Lunsford's newest supporter, Andrew Horne, told us, "We can't beat McConnell with McConnell-lite."
Please take a look at this video of Greg talking about why he's running when you get a chance. And please consider even a small contribution to his campaign at the Blue America ActBlue page.

Greg, welcome to FDL. This community is eager to see Bush’s chief Senate obstructionist go down to defeat in November. And it is a community politically sophisticated enough to know we don’t want to replace a reactionary like McConnell with one of his longtime political allies, Bruce Lunsford, even if he is calling himself a “Democrat.” I know this is going to be a tough race. McConnell, the #1 darling of K Street lobbyists, is reputed to have the biggest warchest in the U.S. Senate and Lunsford is committed to putting in $5 million of his own fortune into making sure Kentucky voters have no opportunity to chose between progressive values and reactionary values in November. My question– something I think about a lot– is why someone would take on the tremendous task, against tremendous odds, to run in a race like this, especially knowing that McConnell is one of the dirtiest and sleaziest politicians in the U.S. What is driving you to run?
Welcome to the Lake, Greg! We’re glad you could join us today.
Welcome, Mr. Fischer
How does McConnell justify his no vote on S-Chip?
It’s time for real change in Washington – and to get it, we need to change the kind of people we send there. I’m fed up with a broken political process and a Senator who over his career has favored special interests over the people of Kentucky. That’s why I’ve accepted the challenge to defeat Mitch McConnell. Now more than ever we have to get fired up for change and get our country back on track.
Hey Howie!
Welcome to FDL Greg. And may I say that as a native of the Bluegrass, I do so hope you are successful in taking out both the DINO and the Obstructionist.
I even visited the Blue America campaign page a few minutes ago and gave $25.00 I can ill afford to try to make this happen.
hi Howie, welcome Greg!
You have a lot of supporters in your mission to unseat the unseemly McConnell
One of the issues that made me decide to enter this race was when the federal budget was passed with billions in tax breaks for big oil just weeks after S-Chip was defeated - the Senate priorities are in the wrong place
Welcome, Mr. Fischer.
Howie wrote:
I am often profoundly embarrassed by my senior Senator,
and the fact that I’ve actually voted for him.
It’s not just Kentuckians that want to ditch Mitch. People all over the country want to see a Senate that works for the good of all Kentuckians and all Americans.
Thank you so much, we share that very important issue!
—————
Now that the former EPA Administrator Christine Todd Whitman testified under oath that the Clear Skies Act of 2003 actually allows more pollution including mercury, will you comitt to improving the Act so it lives up to its name?
I’ve become convinced that Lizzy Schumer wants to keep McConnell in the Senate as cover.
McConnell can obstruct everything and Lizzy gets to feign support for progressive causes and workers but doesn’t have to actually do the hard work and p*ss off the corporate masters.
dakine01 - thanks for your contribution - I appreciate it very much!! I am happy to report that when we file on Monday, people will see that 100% of our contributions came from individuals and over half are from people with contributions $200 or less.
Sandman,
Thanks for your question. One of our campaign values is the preservation of the earth, and in Senate I will work to improve the Clear Skies Act so that it actually does what it’s title implies.
That’s very perceptive and I tried really hard to get an interview with Schumer through the DSCC so I could ask him about that but they wouldn’t let me talk with him.
it is just amazing to me how our representatives are so easily moved off of their progressive issues, a few dollars of contribution from a corporation and bing, their position changes
we really need to eliminate corporate sponsorship of our lawmakers
Hi Mr Fischer, I’m in for a wee bit of coin in your account today. Wish it could be more, but the end-of-quarter pleas from others earlier this week have tapped me out.
When is your primary? Are you finding Lunsford easy to engage? Will there be debates? Are local Democrats responding to the idea of a real Democrat in the race? Aren’t Kentucky Democrats tired of the Bruce Lunsford election-buying-and-losing shuffle?
You remind me of a bluegrass version of Ned Lamont — a soft-spoken citizen out there to make a change in our democracy. Best of luck to you!
Greg,
As I said, I’m from Kentucky originally. And I know that John Sherman Cooper must be spinning in his grave to know how the current holder of his seat operates.
Mr. Fischer, I’ve always been curious about how,
given the number of coal miners in Kentucky,
and the brazen deregulation/nonregulation of mines under
McConnell’s wife, Elaine Chao,
Sen. McConnell doesn’t pay an electoral price back home.
Or has he?
Welcome Greg! So good to have you here. And to echo Teddy, yes, isn’t the Lunsford shuffle getting a little old to Kentucky folks?
Also, have you been to the Elaine Cho shrine? I’m fascinated by it.
We do not need 750 military bases overseas to keep us safe, hopefully that is one place where we can save money, by closing some of them.
I am running for Senate to restore some common sense to our government - it makes no sense that there are more drug company lobbyists than members of Congress - the people of America need to say “ENOUGH!!”
If I remember correctly, and, unlike John McCain, I was just a young boy at the time, John Sherman Cooper covered up for McConnell when he was kicked out of the Army after a few days when a private complained that McConnell fondled his privates.
allan- Sen McConnell says that Kentuckians cannot live without his power and I ask “how has he used his power”? Most every quality of life indicator in Kentucky has decreased during his 24 years in office and 81% of Americans now feel our country is on the wrong track. This sentiment is voiced loud and clear to me as I travel the state. I believe the common sense of Kentuckians will result in the retirement of Sen McConnell.
I appreciate your support TeddySanFran. Our primary is May 20 so please encourage any Kentuckians you know to visit the polls. I haven’t had the opportunity to debate Lunsford yet although there is a state-wide televised debate scheduled for early May and also a debate with the Louisville Forum. I understand that Lunsford is scheduled to attend those.
The support for a real Democrat is overwhelming. Lunsford has run in two state-wide elections and hasn’t won. When people are reminded of his business record and polictical record–having endorsed a Rep. Governor and even chaired his transition team–they find they simply can’t support the pick of the Washington establishment.
You may be correct. I just remember Cooper as a mostly reputable and honest Republican who really did seem to work for the benefit of all not just the few at the top.
As a Republican, he managed to keep being re-elected in a Democratic state. And when he retired in ‘72, his replacement (Dee Huddleston) was a Dem who won the state by about the same margin as Nixon carried it (a lot of ticket splitting that year unfortunately).
Hi Jane - Great talking to you. Like I said to Teddy, Democrats roll their eyes when they talk about Bruce Lunsford. When people are reminded of Lunsford’s baggage, he drops like a rock.
Hi Greg,
What’s your position on mountaintop removal? Do you have any thoughts on preparing Eastern Kentucky for a post-coal economy?
Oh and Greg? I’ve enjoyed reading on the Kentucky blogs about your remarks at the Madisonville dinner about how Lunsford found it more important to go to Dubai than to meet Democrats in Madisonville.
I’m glad you mentioned Dee Huddleston. He’s been very helpful to me and has provided some insight to my campaign. When I asked him what the difference was between now and when he was in the Senate, and he said the fundamental difference was that all the Senators thought of themselves as Americans first and Republicans and Democrats second. We need to restore this “America First” mentality in the Senate.
Donations are trickling in on our Blue America page. I’d like to offer to match all the $5 contributions that come in for Greg for the duration of today’s session. The reason for that is to help him show a large number of donors, which the DC and Lexington Establishments take very seriously. Besides, Blue America is approaching the million dollar mark (since we started in 2005) and the way we got there has a lot to do with many, many $5 and $10 and $20 contributions. And, by the way, Greg is one of only 4 candidates for the U.S. Senate who has endorsed the Responsible Plan to End the War in Iraq.
How does the Republican theory of cutting taxes and spending More work in Kentucky? Because it seems like nutty math to me!
Welcome Greg, I’m a neighbor up in SE Ohio. Love to have more good Democrats in office in these parts!
Energy production has been the lifeblood of Eastern Kentucky. There are some exciting proposals being developed by Lt Gov Daniel Mongiardo such as eco tourism and adventure travel that are seen as ways to diversify the economy for this beautiful part of our country
dakine01,
It was one of the biggest events in Western Kentucky political history. I wouldn’t miss an opportunity to meet those folks and share a stage with Gov. Beshear and Senator Hillary Clinton. But Lunsford ducked the first debate and, I guess, does think the voters in Western Kentucky are as important as his own horses. I’d like a vacation, too. But, I’ll wait until after the primary.
Thanks for the bump Howie! As I mentioned earlier, all of my contributions in the first quarter came from individuals and nearly half were for amounts of $200 or less.
* that should be doesn’t … it seems he doesn’t think the voters of Western Kentucky are as important as his horses.
The great irony of the Bush/McConnell run has been the ballooning of the national debt - all of this from the party of “fiscal responsibility”. Fiscal responsibility needs to be re-established as a driver for all decisions.
You don’t want the Kentuckians I know to go to the polls! *g* My cousin is a longtime Mitch McConnell fan who just accepted a political appointment in Washington with Elaine’s Labor Department.
With the regard to the Washington Democratic establishment, I hope you’ll make good use of the fact that Schumer is trying to pick the Democratic nominee in Kentucky. I think a little anti-establishment sentiment might go a long way in a year when most people are fed up with Washington. Outsider candidates like you should take the chance to run to the outside of everyone!
We look to the victories last cycle of Tester and Webb, against preferred insider candidates, and see hope in Kentucky!
When you win the primary, hang that 363 tons of cash shipped to Iraq to pay Iraqi pensions, just because the Iraqi Finance Minister asked the US to, around McConnnell’s neck like a boat anchor. By the way, it was the largest shipment of cash in US history and makes a very impressive picture.
Ooooh, you bent my arm with that match, Howie! I am always in when it comes to ousting Repugnant toads that deserve a frog march instead of another term in congress.
Mitch Must Go!
I’m in
TeddySanFran - Kentuckians (like everyone else) are fed up with the establishment trying to dictate the candidate. I am running as the candidate of the people of Kentucky.
Thanks for the support Margot. You’ve got a great candidate yourself with Vic Wilson. Be sure to help her out, if you can.
Blue America and FDL are Wulsin territory. I’m glad you recognize what an asset she’ll be in Congress.
The last year of the Clinton admin the budget was 1.9 trillion and now the budget is about 2.9 trillion, except for Medicare, Part D has McConnell mentioned what we got for the extra trillion dollars in spending?
Great suggestion Sandman. As I travel across Kentucky, I’m consistently asked about my opinion of the war. I feel that as a candidate, I need to offer a little more inforamtion than it needs to come to a safe and responsible end. That’s why I’ve endorsed A Responsible Plan to End the War in Iraq. You can see our Web site, www.gregfischer.com for more information.
Greg, I know that Bruce Lunsford is saying he’d like to see the war in Iraq end (for that matter so does George Bush). As one of the only Senate candidates in the country to endorse the Responsible Plan, can you give us an idea how your position on Iraq differs from Lunsford’s and McConnell’s and how the voters in Kentucky who you meet feel about a war that so many of them get suckered into cheering on?
I’m in. Good luck, Greg. Would love to get rid of Mitch.
I am confused, is it over since there is a new post up?
For one, we now know that we entered the War under false pretenses. However, once we all learned that, McConnell still offered Bush a blank check with no accountability.
My opponent, Lunsford says on his Web site that he prays for the safe return of our troops. While I also pray for their safety and return, I demand a drawl down and have a plan to get there. He’s vague and ambiguious and I offer specifics.
We’re spending billions of dollars a month in Iraq while our national debt balloons and our dependence on foreign oil increases. Leadership must call for fiscal responsibility and energy independence.
It’s a new post but it’s not a new post. It’s a cross posting with emptywheel.
So I imagine it is quite acceptable to stay here and continue the conversations.
i think it was a boo-boo - some tubes of “the internets” got tangled up… things are back to ‘normal’ now…
I’m still here and willing to answer as many questions as you can give me.
Are you familiar with Senator Wyden’s (OR) health care proposal and is so what is your opinion on it?
What about mountaintop removal? If elected, what will you do to strengthen enforcement of environmental and safety laws and regulations? Could you support something like the Clean Water Protection Act?
That was a little mistake. And besides the matching challenge for contributions to Greg still holds for another 45 minutes. You can contribute here.
Medical and health issues effect rural America probably more so than urban areas. What are some of Kentucky’s health issues and what would you do to improve the situation?
How’s Bush’s popularity in Kentucky? Will tying McConnell to Bush provide a path to your victory?
Terry,
I wouldn’t begin to presume that I can speak for our guest but it would be extremely difficult to promote things like eco-tourism in eastern Kentucky if the mountains are removed and the streams bespoiled by the mining.
Taking better care of the Earth is a moral issue and America should be leading this international effort. Please check out the campaign values section of my Web site.
In the Bush administration, it’s like the fox guarding the hen house. There is no balance and workers are getting hurt in the process. That needs to change.
I have some familiarity with the Healthy Americans Act. Many of the Act’s themes are similar to what I am advocating. The $2.2 trillion we spend nationally on health care should be enough to give all Americans good quality health care - but transformative change and taking on health care special interests is required. See my health care plan on my web site
I’m thrilled to have any alternative to Lunsford (can’t really pick much between Lunsford and McConnell) but the digs at Andrew Horne don’t sit real well with me. Horne wants McConnell out and, when Schumer shafted the process, he obviously is trying to make the best from things.
Good luck Mr. Fischer. I have to admit that if we end up with Clinton and Lunsford as the choices against McCain and McConnell, it will be hard to drag out to polls.
Don’t you think Mitch will be vulnerable on veterans’ issues? Has he endorsed the new GI Bill of Rights?
Just kicked in $25 to kick out Mitch.
Atlanta is running out of water any problems in Kentucky?
Republicans are so happy when a new high rise goes up in Atlanta and yet went the water runs out, they are silent. By the way Nuclear and Coal power plants require very large amounts of water, so that is double trouble. No water, No electricity.
AZ Matt - thank you very much - I really appreciate the support!!
Bush’s approval rating has been hoving in the mid 30s here. When I speak with people across the state, I get the most attention from them when asking, “Do you want to retire Mitch McConnell?”
People here are worried about the economy, health care and the War in Iraq and they know that leadership under Bush and McConnell are responsible for these major challenges.
What’s more important is for me to show the voters that I have a clean business and political record. I provide them the greatest contrast to McConnell, and therefore, the greatest chance of retiring him in the fall.
Sandman- Kentucky is blessed with plenty of water. We have more miles of waterway than any state except Alaska. The past few weeks there has been flooding conditions as well so unlike our friends south of here we are in good shape.
Availability of water will be a huge challenge as the world develops (and already is in many places). It is important that we treat this natural resource in a sustainable manner.
Mitch’s record on veterans issues is horrible. I have stated on my website my support of Sen. Webb’s proposal for the GI Bill of Rights for the 21st Century. We need to restore the promise of the original GI Bill and provide educational benefits that actually cover the cost of higher education for our troops when they return to civilian life.
I like what the AFT local said when endorsing you. Without mentioning Lunsford, they certainly got the point across:
How is the unemployment situatuion currently in KY?
Since my own congressman does not respond to my email questions, I wanted to say I don’t want any medicine made in China.
Best of Luck in your race.
Unemployment in Kentucky is running slightly ahead of the national average. The real issue is do we have good paying jobs for most Kentuckians? We need a vigorous debate and then decide on action to stop the gutting of the middle class of our country. America cannot be a strong and hope-filled country if we do not have a strong middle class!
Greg, thanks coming by and spending some time with us today. We’ll be following the primary closely and I hope we’ll be able to lend some small help to you in that contest. Once you become the third Democrat in a row to vanquish Lunsford, I hope you’ll come back here to FDL so we can talk more about how to beat McConnell. Earlier someone said you remind them of Ned Lamont. Please don’t take any time off after the primary though. In fact, we’d love to have you back here the day after.
Thanks Howie and everyone else for the endorsement. It was great chatting with you. I am convinced that there is no challenge too big for America to tackle with the proper leadership and all of us working together - let’s move forward!
Greg
I just put in my 200 bits. Go Greg! You are what we need in the Senate.
Greg,
Thanks for being here and good luck! Let’s take back the Bluegrass!
Thank you Howie for all of your hard work.
The matching $5.00 donation inspired me!
(I believe I donated in time, just barely.)
Best of luck to Greg Fisher.
Thanks, Greg, thanks, Howie!
Great chat today. Please come back for more after you’ve won the nomination, sir.
Just donated over @ BA. Thank you for being here, Greg.
