Scarecrow, I just sent a copy of your post above to my Democratic Senator from Colorado, Ken Salazar, with the following message:

Dear Senator Salazar,

You may want to review the below article found at http://firedoglake.com/2008/04.....direction/

This article offers as good a summation as I’ve found on how most Americans (about 81% percent according to today’s NYT/CBS poll) feel about what you guys up there in Washington are doing about such little problems as the housing crisis, which from what I read appears to amount to most very expensive welfare for the rich and other economic issues like the ongoing asinine proposal for making permanent tax cuts mostly for the rich permanent despite our mind-boggling deficit, weak dollar, and energy prices. And though not addressed by this article I’ve copied below, let us also not forget about a few other problems we’d like to see addressed, like the apparently never-ending, three trillion dollar wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, this administration’s despicable torture and detention policies and the erosion of our international reputation, the climate crisis, the lack of access to affordable health care for a huge number of Americans (I’m one of them), and the mystifying support by certain Democratic Senators that would enable some of Bush’s and Cheney’s worst constitutional excesses like their FISA amendment’s proposals for telecom immunity and more warrantless data-mining searches and seizures.

What are you guys thinking? Is there something in the water in D.C. that so many of you seem to lose so much of a connection with or empathy for the reality that the rest of us are forced to live with each and every day? If so, you might want to share these reality-altering substances with your constituents. We could use something to take some of the edge off what our government has wrought over the past 7 1/2 years.

By the way, the next time you are tempted to further enable Bush and his corporate sponsors to do even more damage to the country than they’ve already accomplished, you should check out this article at http://hnn.us/articles/48916.html. This piece says that 98% of historians rate Bush’s presidency as an abject failure. Apparently, based on the NYT poll published today, the vast majority of regular Americans agree with them.

Ooops — my McCain post went up early — sorry all — we’ve got other breaking news on this as well this morning and I hit publish instead of save. My bad! The breaking news on it will be up in a sec…

I don’t think Yoo can or should be dis-tenured for that and other memos. The Right has been trying to break down tenure for years, and they were making a mighty attack on the University in the Spring of 2004, when it got derailed by the Abu Ghraib story. The attack consisted in putting pressure on the NSF and other funding organizations, private and public, to withdraw funding from programmes considered to be too liberal or against the public interest as they defined it. Juan Cole had some experience with this with respect to Mid-east studies but that was just the start. We know what happened at U of Colorado.

So I wouldn’t be to quick to run Yoo out of town on a rail. He is going to be shamed for the rest of his life — though one doubts whether he possesses any sense of shame. Still, the old system of simply sending him to Coventry can make his life miserable, though not as miserable as it ought to be. He’s an ant.
