Leave aside the smoking — do you ever see such a tone of moral condescension when a journalist is writing about a Republican presidential candidate?
I remember a friend sent me one of those chain emails with a list of jokes about the NYC republican convention. A lot of it snarked on gooper hairstyles and dressing. One of the snarks: Smoking allowed or preferred, or something like that. (Either a joke on big tobacco alliances of the Rethugs or anyone who enters the same room as McCain et al will have a toxic rx and lose all impulse control.)
Anyone at FDL want to go to the rethug convention and report back?

Rumor has it, and, believe me, it’s only rumor — but Jake Tapper of ABC News is rumored to have a “thing” with the penises of 7 year-old boys. None of this can be verified, of course, but still we thought you should know about the “rumors”. After all, one should be careful about who is reporting the news — he might, after all, have a “thing” about the penises of 7 year-old boys. I’m not saying it’s Jake Tepper of ABC News exactly, but does he have a good alibi? Of course, he’s not guilty of child molestation, but still, don’t you wonder where he was at the time?

Hold on. News just in. We have been assured that Jake Tapper of ABC respects the rights and privacies of all 7 year-old boys and would never, ever molest them. Thank the good Lord.

Their penises are safe.

Speaking of smelling something, I heard Jake Tapper on the night of the New Hampshire primary and he smelled mighty conservative in his reporting. I’d never heard of Tapper before that night, but come to find out he’s a lead player for political coverage at ABC. He’s a Dartmouth grad, which doesn’t necessarily say anything about him except that there is a strong contingent of right wing students in Hanover, and I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s his spawning ground. My point is why don’t we vet these journalists in the same manner they dig into every inch of a politicians life? Who is this Jake Tapper who suddenly has a leading role in our media coverage? Who are any of these guys who sit in judgement and shape the coverage of any given candidate? This cigarette commentary is not political coverage, it’s not even tabloid, but what it is is gossipy gnawing at a man’s character that has no place in respectable coverage of a presidential election. I don’t know what we’d find out if we spoke to Tapper’s family and friends, but I have hunch we’d find out something about his keen sense of bias.

Its abundantly clear that US corporate media is manipulating the presidential election as easy as 1, 2, 3:

1) First they run out the only viable true progressive, the Democrats best GE candidate – John Edwards – by blacking out his coverage sufficiently to force him out of the race for nothing else other than the masses only know him as the media steortype of a namby-pamby.
2) Then they rip Clinton and soft pedal Obama sufficiently to make the better remaining GE candidate – Clinton – so deep in the hole that its nearly insurmountable for her to win the nomination all the while turning democrats on each other.
3) Now, after making pretty sure its Obama against mccain, they start turning up the smearing of Obama and the beautification of mccain.

There is NOTHING more important to Democrats, progressives, and a better America than breaking up Big Media.

jane–

ed schultz was talking ’to’ a caller today, about the yoo memo and fisa, and he told them that (jello) jay rockefeller was a HERO when it comes to fisa….talked him up and up and pushed what an ally and fighter for the good he was…no mention of jello jay’s backing telco immunity and pressuring for votes. not a peep. i sent him another letter, i don’t think he reads his mail.

i posted another letter i sent to good ’ol traitor ed schultz in the last thread.

and i couldn’t watch the video, dial up, so, i don’t have a vote on ’in’ or ’and’ but i will vote that he brought IRAN up again……and again, and again….really doesn’t matter what words he uses around it, does it?

oh, and in the letter to ed, i compared him to lie-berman. calls himself a progressive, worse than rush.

October of 2002, I ran into Jake Tapper, ABC News, outside the Senate chamber in the Capitol. We chatted for a second. . . .

As any close friend or family member can attest, I have an unusually keen sense of smell and immediately I smelled bullshit and spin on Tapper. Frankly, he reeked of bullshit and spin.

Tapper ran off before I could ask him if he’d just read the Rove fax, so I called his bosses.

They denied it. He’d quit months before, in February, they insisted. . . . But I knew what I’d smelled and I asked his campaign to double-check and to ask him if he’d been bullshitting and spinning for Rove.

They reported back that he had told them he hadn’t had a Rovian fax since he quit. . . .

Except that I don’t like feeling that I wasn’t being dealt with honestly.

What’s significant about this laughable stuff is that the attempt to ‘Clintonize’ Obama is going to fail and in fact may recoil back on the Clintonizer. The aim of trivilializing Democratic candidates — and let’s be clear, it is only Democrats who get the treatment — is to encourage cynicism among the sheeple, so they either won’t vote or won’t trust them. It almost worked with the Clintons. What happened was that the people divided, the majority trusted Bill, but a significant minority believed that his thick hair was hiding horns.

It’s not going to work on Barack. He has successfully copnveyed an image of trust, and it will be impossible to demolish it with stuff about smoking or anything else they can come up with. In fact, the smoking story, if it got around, will probably win him votes among the working class.

Next time you are with a smoker and one of those smokey Mccain ads comes on, notice how the smokers in the room head for the back porch.

Or if you are a smoker, see if you don;t get “the urge” every time one of those McCain ads airs.
