Glenn Greenwald's new book -- Great American Hypocrites: Toppling the Big Myths of Republican Politics -- is working its way up the Amazon bestseller chart. Yesterday at the time we put a post up it was #39, and now it's #13.
If you haven't bought it, please do. And if you're a blogospheric citizen and you've ever thought of writing a book yourself, or you just want to counter the seemingly insurmountable advantage that conservative "authors" (*cough*) like Ann Coulter or Michael Savage have with the wingnut welfare industry, buy two.
The ability of books by online authors to generate sales is a really powerful incentive for publishing companies to sign up liberal voices they might otherwise have no interest in, and exhibit "A" is Glenn Greenwald. Publishers then push political books with online ad buys that keep the entire lefty blogosphere afloat. It supports the development of progressive thought and the dissemination of liberal ideas, and provides a living to people to do this kind of important work in a way that the left has never been able to sustain before such that it could be competitive with the right.
Besides, you know you're going to love it:
Ever since the cowboy image of Ronald Reagan was sold to Americans, the Republican Party has used the same John Wayne imagery to support its candidates and take elections. We all know how they govern, but the right-wing propaganda machine is very adept at hijacking debate and marketing their candidates as effectively as the Marlboro Man. For example:
Myth: The Republican nominee is an upstanding, regular guy who shares the values of the common man.
Reality: He divorced his first wife in order to marry a young multimillionaire heiress whose family then funded his political career.Myth: Republicans are brave and courageous.
Reality: It’s a party filled with chicken hawks and draft dodgers.Myth: Republicans are strong on defense and will keep us safe.
Reality: They prey on fears, and their endless wars make America far less secure.Myth: The Republicans are the party of fiscal restraint and small, limited
government.
Reality: Soaring deficits, unchecked presidential power, and an increasingly invasive surveillance state are par for their course.
Nobody rips the right like Glenn Greenwald. Since there's no Richard Mellon Scaife to buy boxloads of books and force it onto the New York Times bestseller list, you can help do it the democratic way by buying the book here.

hi jane.
Afternoon, Jane.
Spot on.
It’s about externalizing costs, of self interest above the country’s interests, and of profits over humanity.
Sweet Jane.
Another book on my reading list. Thanks for the heads up, Jane.
And if you push the little “Book Salon” button at the top of the page and scroll down a bit, you’ll notice that Glenn will be here at the ‘Lake to talk about his book on Sat, April 19th at 5PM ET/2PM FDL Time.
Given the news of the Yoo memo, I’m sure there will be plenty to talk about.
OT but speaking of Yoo, he’s nothing more than an overly ambitious greedy attorney that hitched his star to the Republican Party and their leader GW Bush. He was/is merely a henchman in a Brooks Brothers suit at the bidding of the Bush regime. He didn’t need direct orders to craft his legal pretzel, he knew what was expected and acted accordingly. It seems to have paid off. A professor of law at a major university and a frequent commentor on the “news” shows. The Republicans do take care of their own, even when they are criminals. It’s really not that dissimilar in how the 3rd Reich functioned. Bureaucrats and even just plain citizens were expected to always be “working toward the Fuhrer” meaning they would, even without direct orders, promote Party policies and ideology. Fortunately those in Germany responsible were held accountable for their crimes. In the U.S., not so much.
but Greenwald is sometimes insufficiently deferential to the Party of the Least Worst, however … indeed he sometimes seems to beleive so strongly in principles like the rule of law and the importance of restoring the Constitution and ending the ongoing war crime in Iraq that he writes withering criticisms of (D) Party Leaders, for enabling and accomodating the crimes of the Bush regime.
hopefully this will inspire others to examine the difficult relationships between principle and loyalty to political faction.
Though this book will no doubt be very helpful to the (D)’s, Greenwalds ability to criticise both sides is a testament to some serious integrity.
Yoo who?
as in knock knock
he’s way worse than that, he’s morally bankrupt
myth; reagan cut taxes
truth; reagan raised taxes more then any peacetime president before him
myth; reagan was for small government
truth; government grew under reagan
reagan was hardly “reaganesque” and that myth must be busted immediatley
Thankfully, most of the 20 Mule Team Borax Demographic is now buried.
Ronnie was devastating on a horsie.
Ha. You remind me of an argument I had with a client years ago on Wall Street over my use of the phrase: Reagan deficits.
Being overly ambitious and greedy go hand in hand with morally bankrupt. Didn’t feel it necessary to state the obvious.
OT
Nir Rosen now testifying on CSPAN3.
I took your advice Jane and bought 2 copies. I will give a copy to my Father-in-Law.
elliot, I believe if congress does not prefer charges against woo and those that asked for and then acted on his memo enjoy the same liability as yoo
I believe they now must prefer charges against the administration, and at least yoo, I believe they have no choice if they expect to shed liability
if pelosi does not put impeachment back on the table I think congress needs to ask her to step down and if she fails I believe they must impeach her
actions have consequences and their failure to act will burden them with the same liability
OT
I guess you’d call this a “reverse endorsement”:
“WALLINGFORD, Pa. — Democrat Barack Obama said Wednesday he talks regularly with former vice president Al Gore and would consider putting him in a Cabinet-level position or higher.”

And now this:
http://www.publicpolicypolling.....040208.pdf
First poll showing Obama lead in PA.
can you say “War Crimes”
we need to prosecute these people to restore our honor, among other reasons.
check this out elliott, as if we didn’t know it;
I have preordered a copy, thanks for the heads up.
torture gets us less information not more, torture brings us perpetual unrest and it creates a never ending source for insurgents against us
it is impossible to be welcomed when we are torturing, impossible
the only reasons to torture would be to to create the envirnement where you cannot win and to do it on purpose and the other reason would be to get your rocks off if you are a sick maniac
we do believe they had both in mind
Me, too. Looking forward to reading it. Glenn is not only a great writer but he is reliable.
The Berkeley Daily Planet has been on the John Yoo case for two years, since 2006. Protest Condems UC Law Professor
http://www.berkeleydailyplanet.....status=301
Me thinks they are currently organizing for more than a protest.
Does anyone know if John Yoo still appears on the Lehrer News Hour as a talking head? PPS has some explaining to do.
Berkeley doesn’t give a FF what the students protest. They’ll only care if the donors protest.
Yoo is worse than morally bankrupt. His memo proves him evil. And evil is not an exaggeration or meant to be dramatic. Torture is evil.
UN would be another role. What a contrast to John Bolton! I think we can get back some credibility. Some serious repairing needs to be done.
Yes, I seem to remember him on within the last month or two.
Nir Rosen just called the U.S. imperialist and Biden said: Why did we invite you?
Ture. On their own the university will do nothing. The South African protests started with student protest until the university caved.
Then…. do it like spocko…. write to the donors…. ask them if John Yoo and his “version” of the Constitution represent how their money should be used?
Does John Yoo speak for the donors to Berkeley U?
Sounds like a plan.
“…the only reasons to torture would be to to create the envirnement where you cannot win and to do it on purpose and the other reason would be to get your rocks off if you are a sick maniac.”
Interesting points, perris. I’d always considered (assumed) the latter, but not the former. But it does make Orwellian sense: “We’ve always been at war with
IraqIranSyriaHamasAfghanistanOceania.”Sen. Lugar is surprised to hear that Iraq is like Somalia, with no central govt & run be warlords.
That is pretty much what happened with South Africa. They may be doners but at some point they sit around the dining table and have a talk. Who wants to be connected with torture?
A large reason for torture is to gain false confessions, a la al-Libi, to support a convenient false hypothesis.
So was Biden joking or being the buffoon again.
Hard to tell. I think it was both. He wanted it to sound funny, but it sounded frustrated.
Syria is reportedly calling up their reserves.

er what?

BTW thank you eCahn for the CSPAN 3 heads up. It is an interesting hearing.
So is it legal for your “State” to spy on you and gather a bunch of information?
http://rawstory.com/news/2008/....._0402.html
Done. Thanks.
VERY! Nice that they’re finally hearing from voices other than the propagandists.
awww hell no!!! Now how do we find out more info on this?
Yeah, something is up…Israel is handing out gasmasks to the entire population….Syria calling up reserves…new moon coming…Fallon gone….it doesn’t look good.
That’s the only story on it that I’ve seen…there is a link in the story.
Refresh your browser and things may look different.
Here’s a link to the FDL News Box with a precis from the original article. It was posted in News Box @ 7:15AM FDL time.
It is a bit overwhelming to think about all that is horribly wrong in this country and the amount of work it is going to take to fix it (let alone to get the information that will truthfully state just how bad things are…e.g. Yoo memo)
thanks
LOL now my …’er what’ is just hanging out there looking a tad out of place..no biggie, i hate having poo on my shoe
Hmmm….Israel admits it bombed Syria to eliminate a nuclear plant….

Already purchased a copy!
Glenzilla rips ass.
Hi All,
I’m a long time lurker and some-time commenter…
I wanted to let everyone know about a different place to buy Glenn’s book…
It’s an independent book seller called Powell’s. In case you’re not familiar with them. they’re based in Portland, OR.
The reason I bring this up is… According to (currently on hiatus) buyblue.org, Amazon.com is a HUGE contributor to REPUBLICAN campaign funds… And considering who WE are, I’d think we wouldn’t want to help contribute to people we’re trying get out of office.
So please consider buying Glenn’s book from here: http://www.powells.com/biblio/62-9780307408020-0
Since I found out that factoid several years ago, I’ve been doing my best not to buy from Amazon.
Thanks all.
Cheers!
That creates a dilemma as I believe FDL gets a small piece of the pie back from Amazon when the book is purchased through a link from here.
Not to mention the project to punch it up the Amazon sales ranking.

I agree. I did buy through Amazon this time for the sake of boosting his book’s rank, but I normally boycott Amazon due to the cock-fighting magazines they sell (the Humane Society has gone after them without success).
Glennzilla reports, as of about 1.00 pm EST, that his book is currently #3 on Amazon’s Non-Fiction List, and #11 overall.
oh no. bummer.
