Is anyone else getting deja vu? Back in 2000, the media did all they could to portray a blueblooded New England fratboy as a genial salt-of-the-earth cowboy, a likable reg'lar fella who you could have a beer with. And people were fooled.
The media went along with it when a sneering, mean-spirited man who mocked a condemned woman marketed himself as a "compassionate conservative." And people were fooled.
The media touted a clueless, empty-suited company-killer whose economic plans didn't add up as a reasonable, moderate "CEO president." And people were fooled.
The media derided a serious, accomplished, lifelong public servant as an insincere, condescending, know-it-all phony and serial fibber, in thrall to consultants and focus groups. And enough people were fooled that George W. Bush became president and flushed the United States and Iraq right down the toilet.
And now it's 2008, and what's happening? The media are telling us that corrupt, angry, out of touch John McCain is a straight-talking, independent-minded, maverick reformer.
This is the same John McCain who was a member of the Keating Five. Who cheated on and dumped his invalid first wife for a much younger and richer woman. Who made one grand campaign-finance reform gesture to rehab his image and turned his back on it forever, to the point where he actually ignores campaign finance laws. Who shielded Republican senators from the Jack Abramoff investigation. Who has swallowed whatever pride he once had and embraced corporate lobbyists, the religious right, George W. Bush, torture, warrantless wiretapping, telecom immunity, the occupation of Iraq, and the scapegoating of Iran.
At the same time, the media are telling us that Barack Obama is some kind of Muslim or Muslim sympathizer, that he's an angry black separatist or angry black separatist sympathizer, that he's all hope and no plan or spine, that he's The Most Liberal Senator Evar, and his supporters are all sexist. They're telling us that Hillary is some kind of calculating, ruthless she-beast who will sacrifice the Democratic party on her altar of ambition, and her supporters are all racist. Okay, I might be exaggerating a little bit, but not much.
This is why the liberal blogosphere has declared "an all-out war against the mainstream media" - not to completely discredit them as an institution (although, come to think of it, that might not be such a bad thing), but to hammer them ruthlessly every time they attack Democrats with lazy stereotypes and high-school sniping, and every time they fawn over McCain or any other macho Republican manly men who might set their loins a-quiver. And maybe, just maybe, we can scare some of them into occasional honesty, or raise a big enough stink to damage the worst offenders' credibility.
In 2000, it was just Bob Somerby howling into the void. But in 2008, the liberal blogosphere has grown big enough to be heard - and not a moment too soon.
America simply cannot afford to get fooled again.

zed, april fools again??
Evening Eli. I am not fooled.
Zed?
So?
Evenin’, Betsy.
It took all my willpower not to pepper the post with Rick Astley links…
well it is a great post! I just read the headline and that is the first thing that came into my head–after zed, of course
Tell it like it is, Eli!
This kind of thing helps:
CNN catches McCain making contradictory statements about Sadr.
Thanks! The media’s love for McCain, and love for the straight-talking maverick narrative they constructed around him 8 years ago, has scared me for quite a while now. I was so relieved (not to mention surprised) when it looked like his campaign was dead in the water, but… well.
Al Franken in “Lies and the Lying Liars Who tell them” on pages 41 and 42 used a HLMP Matrix to look at the percentage of positive, neutral and negative stories about Al Gore and Bush.
Is there anyway we could use that to get a running tally of media bias Bobo Brooks alone should push up the numbers he loves McCain more than he ever loved Bush.
There’s nothing wrong with Rick Astley! Aargh, my DSL provider played a grand April Fool’s day with Hawaii today… I was just able to connect now!
If I wake up after the election and McCain is crowned president, I will have a major conniption and take to the streets, and I’ll bet the whole country will too.
The media is basically despicable in their misrepresentation of each of the candidates.
Fill in the blank:
Most Americans are ________.
My choice would be “gullible.”
My friends, it is going to take a lot of educating.
A hundreds year war for oil???? Retarded!!!!!!!
brainwashed…………..
Most Americans are against the war and the current Neocon administration and want change.
Just stop by my place in South Austin and I’ll go with ya! I already have sugns and everything! What the hell, I haven’t been arrested in years…
So? /s
Ronald Reagan Diaries says of George W, “A moment I’ve been dreading. George brought his ne’re-do-well son around this morning and asked me to find the kid a job. Not the political one who lives in Florida; the one who hangs around here all the time looking shiftless. This so-called kid is already almost 40 and has never had a real job. Maybe I’ll call Kinsley over at The New Republic and see if they’ll hire him as a contributing editor or something. That looks like easy work.”
Have you clicked on any videos on the YouTube front page today?
You worry to much the only way McCain can win is if there is a military takeover of the country. In which case I’m sure that we will all be picked up the night before:)
That was actually satire *by* Kinsley, so appropriate for 4/1. It certainly is a thing o’ beauty.
Nicely done… But your description of the “media”
is spot on for the liberal blogosphere actually…
At least for now…
I still can’t figure out if this one is an April Fools story or just very scary: Attack of the third graders
I never agreed with Reagan before?
The media is spinning McCain’s popularity. He is not that popular. Look how little money he has. The Neocons want him, because they can control him, and the corporations want him, because they think they can control him. That is about it. They control the message. They are lying. Look at the vote numbers. It is BS. If he wins, it is going to be because of major stumbles on the part of the Dem nominee combined with media support and Diebold. They are not going to be able to convince the majority of voters that Iraq is okay …they won’t be able to do that. But the media are corporate run and they are threatened by the idea of not getting the tax breaks the Pukes want to make permanent, and they don’t give a sh*t about human beings.
JMHO
You betcha…I’m a stone’s throw away.
I assume you’re talking about the Obama/Clinton part. Alas, too true.
2004 ruined me!! *G*
Uh-oh, no I haven’t this was my first stop! *g*
Where is Nancy Grace this seems like her type of story.
Sound like they where getting ready to torture someone. Learning by example?
Not a joking matter…hmmmm.
…. are not finding what they are looking for.
3rd grader…….. WTF!
In response to James Joyce
Maybe “brainwashed” is more descriptive than is gullible. As an old-timer I remember when a dash of cynicism was totally American.
In response to LS
True. And the 28% who tell the pollsters Bush is ok are totally loyal to their Corporate Masters.
I meant if they thought it was an April Fools joke…I wasn’t mean that to be directed at you….*g*
The corporations do want him I was watching CNBC and all the business experts were pro McCain.
But nobody believes he can keep the war going without raising taxes. Thanks to debt financing the Dollar is down. I think that when adjusted for inflation the DOW is lower than it was 7,8 years ago when Bill was in charge.
But these business experts put politics ahead of making money.
We need our own damm business channel!
evening, pups
My son and a friend broke a lock on a door at school trying to get into the classroom because the toys were inside and the kids were outside. They were six. But these kids are a whole different kind of kiddie criminal.
Can’t we just get rid of these silly elections and determine the Presidency based on who gives Chris Matthews more feelings up his leg?
Double-talk Express
Oh the business blogs is where I got this information CNBC is a waste of time if your looking for real information.
Sounds like a Who song… You Can’t Get Fooled Again. What song am I thinking of???
We Won’t Get Fooled Again.
Chris uses his Gaydar I take it to find the most manly candidates.
Yeah, we need a CSPAN type of Washington Journal show that is strictly for the Constitution, Peace, and anti-Neocon programming. Democracy Now is great, but a call in blogger/comment show would be great. Dreamer me…
I think The General gives him pointers.
Heh, I’d trust you more and the tingles up your leg, Teddy…! *g*
Clueless, too.
Cynicism is American. It is the cynic who challenges conventional wisdom!
Having been labeled the consummate cynic by my prof in college my response was you are wrong!! I’m a pragmatic realist who believes the glass is half full! It’s like criticizing America and first thing challenged is your patriotism. This is what Nazis did to those who challenged Hitler!!!
There was a big box in front of it, Tex.
…………..then killed them!!!
General? does Chris have a new man crush?
Not funny.
Jesus’ General, a well-known authority on manliness.
“Get on my knees and pray…”

From the huge voter registration response, I think the country is waking up finally, but the dirty trick brigade will do anything to keep the power…anything. That is the problem. They are ruthless. They don’t care if people get blown up or anything else (just look at Iraq…just look at how they let people die during Katrina). They have an agenda. There is plenty of proof out there. The sooner everyone realizes this, the better. They are way, way worse than we even imagine. I’m serious, and I’m not paranoid.
pound c-span with emails……………….
Aww, I meant no harm, I’d much prefer any pup’s take on the candidates, than Tweety’s…!
Eric Altemran had a good piece on the MSM in last week’s New Yorker:
how could that be?
I wonder if we were to switch the biggest Obama and Hilary scandals and replace their names with McCain’s what would a biometric reaction test show when media people read about these scandals with McCain’s name put in.
What would the media’s biometric reaction be about McCain scandals with Obama or Hilary’s name added in?
Eli - What about Gerald Ford? He also made some uncomplimentary comments about W. Was that also satire?
I don’t have the same easy feeling about it.
Yup. I do love that they let anybody call in and email. Washington Journal is quite a bit like a TV blog. The problem is, they don’t correct the facts when they have someone one…they don’t challenge the position with facts…I’d like to see more challenge by the hosts, but we are lucky to have it.
“Thanks to the Web, we can all join in a Deweyan debate on Presidents, policies, and proposals. All that’s necessary is a decent Internet connection.”
until it is shut off!!!
Chris loves Jesus now! in that way…well the guy did have 12 disciples.
Our own business channel. Yes, I like that idea.
Wonder why they haven’t shut if off yet?
Well, I’m saying that Reagan didn’t actually say any of that. Kinsley was joking. I’m sure Ford was not.
I think newspapers are great, and it saddens me that the print media is fading…I just wish they would not go down the road of the powers that be…like J. Miller….that sort of thing.
Then it would be back to the print media.
They love it too!
Things that happened today that Countdown didn’t cover because Keith and his guests are fixated on the Pennsylvania primary: testimony of BigOil CEOs on Capitol Hill; 95 weapons programs overbudget and late; FBI sez parachute isn’t DB Cooper’s; Vytorin makers held bad news, also on Capitol Hill; and all regulations essentially suspended in building of our “border fence.”
Weren’t any of these stories worth covering instead of another round of “who said what about Wright” and “Clinton’s Bosnia gaffe?” The same commentators saying the same things about the same stuff — at least Dan Abrams has the guts to have a segment called “Teflon John.”
I mean, we DFHs get only one hour of teevee news that’s remotely worthwhile, and I think its host is going off the rails. BushCo is the enemy within, not either Democratic campaign.
Ding.
I am writing to KO now.
…and vice versa…imagine..the Vicki story or the lobbyist story…or the FEC story…
Obama and HRC would be toast, yesterday.
No, that was actually news, but held at Gerald Ford’s request for a post-death article by once-journalist-turned-insider-hagiographer-to-the-stars Bob Woodward
Abrams was just showing McBuush’s appearance on Letterman… He delivered his lines like a corpse, oh wait, it was a corpse…
Spotlight and Digg this post!
How about funding a lobby group after the election to challenge the corporate lobbyist. Small donations from Americans…… Lets set up an FDL Lobbyist.org to represent the interests of Americans. I motion to appoint EW as the lead lobbyist for the American people. We should be in the face of politicians everyday!!! Americans would contribute dollars to such an organization if it represented the interests of Americans to counter balance the corporate sleaze in this nation……….
On MSNBC now.
Life can be worse than fear or any Hell another can create. Its your own choices that make you miserable. Bush with all his wealth and power knows that we all think he’s a fool, he knows that we think Cheney is the real power behind the throne, he knows that he is losing in Iraq.
Me I’ll be laughing at him regardless of my own circumstance the entire time until he leaves an thats my choice:)
I must say I thought KO’s take down of the Scaife Clinton meeting was hysterical.. But you are right about the amount of wasted time overall. Perhaps he needs to keep the whole election crew busy?
Like Pete Seeger sez, “If you’ve been to jail for justice, you’re a friend of mine.”
And with all the vid capable mobile phones the heat is kind of watching how they treat people. A video of jailers dumping a quad out of a wheelchair onto the floor in the Tampa slammer has really gotten their attention.
eli–i’m gonna ’come out’ on your thread about a few things……..i hope you consider it an honor.
i was/am an original who fan, actually had a copy of pete townshend’s first solo album, who came first, where he says–let’s see action let’s see people, let’s see freedom, let’s see who cares. seen them countless times, last time in dec.
woke me up, i was a junior in high school, and i’ve still got that original thrill locked inside of me. playing over and over again.
let’s see who cares.
i wonder who cares.
the media……?
well, since ali’s murder-brother of mohammed, nephew of dr. maryam of gorillasguides.com, i have taken a new tack in my letter writing.
more direct, less emotional.
i have always been a letter writer, from a letter-writing family, in the traditional way, monogrammed paper and best pen, when the calls to action are announced, i am on it.
i have never believed that emotional letters, reeking with threats, opinions and rhetoric have a place in changing the opinion of anyone, they certainly don’t affect mine.
but the facts do.
my new approach, when i hear/see something that contradicts the facts, or leaves them out, i write to inform.
i made a timeline, with facts gathered from here and other sources about the basra debacle.
sent it every freakin’ where.
with links.
i do this with every single thing that happens that shouldn’t and things that aren’t reported accurately.
noone can read everything, that it how i phrase it, and they are better equipped to circumvent irrelevant information on their shows next time.
that their reputations depend on succinct, factual presentation.
that is how i am doing it now.
anyone who has been in an argument can attest to the truth that you lose, every time, to someone who has the facts, or someone who turns the emotion, but bring it back to facts again, and you win..
keep doing it, facts, back to the facts, list the events, in order, again and again.
so if you want to be a winner, you better base your argument on them………
the times are changing in that regard, i think, that the bush demagogory(sp?) is now out of style, the reciting of imagery is not winning, because facts are winning, so, pups, jump on it, send out the facts.
everywhere.
lots of email addresses are out there, every time you hear something that isn’t accurate, send a letter, to inform, and include a factual link.
: ) that’s what i do.
Would love to see EW take on Rahm - in fact, I would pay to see it.
I thought it was most excellent, too! He sounded just like Dithers…!
You know what? I’m almost more pissed at the media than I am at McLobby or Bushco…I know they suck, but the media is infuriating…they don’t have to be this way…
I’m hugely disappointed in people like Mika Brzezinski who backs down and allows Scarborough to run over her. He even admitted that he is paid to be an a**hole.
Another excellent idea!
eli - i’m not sure about this… but i think, it may be much, much worse. the timing suggests to me that mccain didn’t just bury the scandal - first he investigated and got a hold of the evidence, then had some meetings, out of which it looks like he became mcbush… and only THEN did he shield anyone. not making any accusations… but it sure looks like there may be some blackmail involved (or at least a quid pro quo for keeping some folks out of jail).
mary beth is really the person who knows this story the best (she has followed it in detail for years)…. and here is a recent summary from suburban guerrilla.
How about we get rid of lobbyists and just publicly fund elections?
Hey, I’m honored! And thank you.
I saw the other night on CNN that Sela War(d) was hosting a fund-raiser for McStain… I used to think she was HOTT. Not no more.
:(
He is a lively chap, isn’t he? *snort*
Shouldn’t they pay him to be another KO or do they like low rated programs.
Who is attending when the revolution comes we can go after them next.
The corporate media is ultimately digging their own collective grave. They have lost what little integrity they have had left. When the walls come tumbling down the heads of celebrity pundits and bloviators will be on pikes adorning the castle walls.
I’m sorry for your loss but it was better that you found out now *g*
The politicians where suppose to represent the governed! Corporations have gamed the system and we must act as a collective unit to hold them in check.
I do not believe all corporations are irresponsible. However Jefferson’s fears and distrust of corporations is well founded. The concept of the corp is to minimize individual liability, while maximizing profit via less than noble behaviors in most instances. Wake up America!!! I doubt any of us would walk a mile for a camel cigarette today, knowing what we were told was not true. Cigarettes do cause lung cancer, in spite of the tobacco institutes, meritless claims to the contrary! Sound just like Oil’s claims that there is no nexus between greenhouse gases and global warming, or the trillions of dollars that have left America via “middle men” to Oil rich countries…………
He would be sliced by the slicing machine!!!!!!!!!!
That is an excellent synopsis, selise! I still want to know why the emails haven’t been released and why have they been redacted, no national security reasons could possibly exist with them…!
I will settle for a day when everyone realizes that the media have no credibility, and read them like Russians used to read Pravda, turning to the blogizdat to get the real story.
Umm… executive privilege?
Well, that’s kind of an odd comment.
It sorta begs a response….several come to mind, but….
IRT KO, it seems that MSNBC has become a one-trick pony. They talk about nothing but politics. It’s getting annoying. I’m watching the truly dreadful Abrams show now and though I tuned in late, nothing I saw was anything but politics. And not spoken of intelligently, either.
That damn pixie dust is industrial grade, I swear!
That was my dream also but time is running out and another Republican administration will be the final straw. Then, the corporate media sycophants and courtesans will realize they are fair game in more than a figurative sense.
LMAO KO doing scaife’s voice a la Mr Burns on Countdown. Eggscellent
What level the playing field? Sure How about congress fund C-span 5 the Candidate’s Channel. So instead of running all over the place they can communicate with Americans and still do their jobs. To simple to pragmatic to fair for the leverage seekers seeking to manipulate and game the system!
eli at 94 thank you
and to add to my 87-
i would like to stress the importance of what i am trying to express.
my uncle was/is a historian, has book binders of letters and letters sent back that would rival quebecois autograph album…… he worked at the guggenheim institute, sent letters to social and political movers of his time, he had a picture of fdr on his wall. why?
my parents have a picture of fdr in my father’s home office..why?
why?
they say he was the first president that was able to commicate enmasse to the public…
he received feedback from the public.
now, think about that……
jane just said that conyers brought up the inundation of calls and emails to his office, he said that at the take back america conference.
his office was affected, he was affected.
so start affecting things with facts.
facts rule.
facts are great.
emotion and platitudes and rhetoric and opinions are not what someone can use to change things.,
facts are.
we are so many.
one letter would be a barrage.
i send lots of letters, lots of letters. i send, they receive.
they cannot read everything, or be informed on everything, so, let’s inform, send facts.
a hypothesis: because then mccain leverage. he can’t threaten to release what has already been released.
