As Mainland (formerly "Red" in ‘the good ol’ days) China crushes dissent and violates human rights, some politicians — most recently Nancy Pelosi — have called on Bush to not attend the Olympic Ceremonies there this Summer so as to show at least some dissatisfaction.
To which Bush replies, "What, not talk to leaders of other countries? That’s preposteratin‘".
The real reason Bush will not do this is two-fold. First, when has BushCo let a little thing like crushing dissent and violating human rights be a problem, if not a solution?
And second, Bush has to go because he has to make the main financier of his "glorious occupation of Iraq" happy. Since Bush refuses to increase taxes, the $12 billion a month Iraq occupation is financed by borrowing. As we now have no money to borrow in this country, we go looking for countries that do. As Nobel Prize Winning Economist Joseph "The $3 Trillion War" Stiglitz, states:
Because "the saving rate [in America] is zero," says Stiglitz, "that means that you have to finance [the war] by borrowing abroad. So China is financing America’s war." The US is now operating at such a deficit, in fact, that it doesn’t have the money to bail out its own banks.
But hey, at least we have Iran nearby in Iraq to handle whatever political crisis occurs and take care of "our" interests.
Bush has no choice, he has made us China’s supplicant. Just 36 years ago, "Only Nixon could go to China" was the saying. Now, "only Bush" would have to go there to keep his creditors happy.
Heckuva Job.

Good post and happy zed, attaturk!
Whoa! Doc, you’re up lat, too!
Hi, AttaTurk!
Now to read
FunnyD
This is one of the most damning things about this administration. Not only have they destroyed the image of the United States as a nation of principles with torture and extraordinary rendition, but they have made us more vulnerable than we have been at perhaps any other time in our history. Our military is stretched out to the point of making us unable to respond to an actual threat if we were to face one and the marionette strings of our economy stability are held by the Chinese.
stabilityI should have edited that word out above. He is a child ……someone told him not to go.
He has to go to show resolve and will power .
Bush will go ,he just needs help with the door .
Good morning, pups. It’s Bobo and Egan in the NYT today. Bobo is being Babbling Brooks this morning, with a thing he typed called “Pitching With Purpose.” He says it’s easiest to change the mind by changing behavior, and that’s probably as true in the office as on the pitching mound. I guess he’s trying to take note of the fact that it’s baseball season… Oh, he neglected to mention that Dear Leader got roundly and loudly booed. Mr. Egan’s column is titled “Fresh Ideas For a Third Crusade,” and he says if it takes a churchgoing guidebook writer who spent his college years as a member of the marching band to call for an end to a tired war, so be it. It’s the war on drugs he’s talking about…

The coffee, tea and hot chocolate are ready, and I’ve got a selection of bagels with LOTS of cream cheese. I know some of you like a buttered bagel, so I left the butter out just long enough to get a bit soft. Have a great day.
Sort of like what a pay cheque is worth.
Morning
I would also point out that come Jan 21st 2009 the feurher will not be able to go anywhere in the world without being subject to arrest for war crimes. Let him have his few remaining moments in the sun and then we can kick him to the ditch.
UBS, the largest Swiss bank, is writing down $19 billion, the chairman is leaving, and it’s associated with the mortgage mess here.
Well, there’s always the enormous compound in Paraguay, right on top of an enormous aquifer. Given climate change, water may be the new oil. Does Paraguay extradite for war crimes?
Probably not but on the other hand will the secret service be able to protect the war criminal there? I would assume that there are quite a few people that would love to earn a few shekels by…… can’t say more or I will be “modded”
Whaaat? Butter, you have to be kidding. About butter and toasted items. I have never understood why some Americans butter toast and bagels while they are hot. Why make a piece of bread crispy only to make it soggy. I never understood. When I put cream cheese on my bagel I want it cooled prior to shmeering.
Thanks Marion and I would love some hot choc!
Condi is doing a heck of a job.
Well, that’s why, thank heaven, we have Thomas’ English muffins!
Aha! Now please tell me the meaning of life.
Ah, the meaning of life… Not sure I can really help with that one, although I do believe it has a lot to do with enough asparagus in the spring.
Mornin’ all!
So you apply that theory to anything which has been cooked; pancakes, waffles, rolls, cornbread? And are you saying that is a British principle, or what nationality?
freedom dip sandwich?
Morning everyone. CNN is about to do a story on Wright being honored. Hope it’s fair.
Occupying Iraq has cost the U.S. three trillion in five years, i.e., 600 billion per year. The U.S. has roughly 300 million residents, so the occupation of Iraq cost the U.S. $2,000 per resident per year.
So, how much is it worth to your family to occupy Iraq for another year. On average, that year is going to cost your family $2,000 per family member. Does your family have ways it would rather spend that money, say putting the kids through school, etc.? Just askin’.
Buenos Dias, although here it’s more like Dreary Dias but it’s snug inside.
nomolos, hard to schmeer cold butter on anything, including one of Marion’s bagles *waving to Marion* but there is something really sensual about watching butter melt on, say, a hot English muffin as it gets closer and closer to my mouth.
.
oh and btw this is what’s on Washington Journal this morning:
7:30 am – Rep. Vito Fossella (R-NY), Republican Policy Committee. Capital Markets Task Force – Chairman
8:00 am – Jeff Faux, Economic Policy Institute, Founder
8:30 am – Ted Galen Carpenter, Cato Institute, Defense & Foreign, Policy Studies – Vice President
Curse you twolf, now I’m gonna be wanting a Freedom Dip sandwich all day.
Only bread items. Definitely English. Growing up there there was no bloody heat so even toast was frozen as soon as it hit the table. One learns to put the best of things one can not control. Of course there was no butter in England or Ireland when I grew up as we had rationing.
that would be a sucker bet
Good good morning morning solai solai
…and water is the new oil
our Canadian neighbors are justifiably nervous
Aha! It was more than just the “taxation without representation.” You guys were trying to screw around with our damned butter and toast!
Sorry, that was responding to nomolos @23. As to twolf1, yes, but not freedom onion dip for your Fritos.
Dreary here as well. And I’ve caught the cold that I’ve been avoiding all winter.
As well they should be, since they’ve got plenty of both.
Where’s Wesley Clarke? He was all over the airwaves awhile ago supporting HRC. Disappeared now.
you know, it really is more than sad that Attaturk is right. Bush squandered every single source of wealth and power we had.
well, the fed can and does print up as much paper as it needs
and there is the very problem, the more paper, the less the dollar is worth, the more inflation
in fact, I have no idea why inflation isn’t even higher, china and saudi arabia should have dumped their notes on the economy a long time ago, the longer they wait, the less their notes are worth
right now they are getting fractions on the dollar if they call in their debt and according to some, this is why inflation hasn’t gone balistic
if the countries that carry our debt started releasing those funds, the money they lent to us would be worth pennies instead of dollars and that is why I am told inflation isn’t far worse then it is
in other words, our economy’s health is at the pleasure of communist china and saudi arabia
BRILLIANT!
you know, there are close to 300 days left of this kind of damage, 300 days and the more exposed they are the more brazen they become
I do not believe we have seen the worst of the administration yet, I believe that will be arriving shortly before the elections
and he turned the international love we gained because of the attack into the most vile hatred our country has ever known, we will be attempting to rebuild our once proud history for generations upon generations, at a price untold, for time unknown
Iran? Marshall Law? “terrreristss” attack?
I believe they are waiting until there are grownups back in the WH hoping that the dollar will become of some value once again.
I know I’ve said this before but I think knowledge is innoculation
the administration has not only amassed more power then any other presidency or vice presidency, they have amassed more power then even they might have imagined in their wildest imagination
and we are to believe these masoganists and bigots are goingt to hand this power off to either a women, a black man, or both
ARE WE BATTY?
I cannot believe a sentient person would believe they are handing this power off
yet here we are, acting as if they are….hoping, just hoping, they are not that depraved, not that brazen, not that zealous
but these are the very same who suspended habeas corpus, who ordered torture, how took a piss on our constitution
all I can do is hope and pray I am a parnoid
Good Morning, everyone.
To both of your posts, Perris–they worry and depress me. I’m with you in that I don’t think we’ve seen the worst of it yet.
And John Conyers, Nancy Pelosi, et al, don’t want to impeach because…? They’re worried about handing the presidency to McCain, but it seems they’re focused on that one aspect…instead of taking a look around and seeing that Bush/Cheney’s worse acts are yet to come…
They need to think the unimaginable. And act on it.
I’ll never forget the overwhelming and so warm and spontaneous reaction we got back then from all over the world.
*sigh*
all three, just to get to number two
the president has even passed an “executive order” that claims not only in a catastrophe is he the supreme leader, but that catastophe can take place ANYWHERE
that’s right, if israel falls, catastrophe, if china falls, catastrophe
and who decides what is or isn’t a catastrophe?
why, he does, that’s who
ARE WE BATTY?
off to coffee, see all in a bit
I agreed with you, Perris, until Bush issued some executive order that would screw the next pres. OTOH, haven’t heard any more shennanigans like that, so maybe they’ve chosen another path.
Those of us who are old enough to remember will recall that,
in the aftermath of the 1980 Moscow Olympics boycott,
St. Ronnie sent his Secretary of Ag crawling on his knees to beg
for forgiveness and purchases of US grain.
A few days later, KAL 007 was shot down.
let’s hope “hit and run” suits their cowardice better, this might be our last hope
what was that order, I don’t know it
He issued an exec order requiring future presidents to account for every penny spent. Something like that. Can be googled.
Where are those dollars?
The oil exporters are raising their prices as the dollar falls so that perhaps their profits / purchasing power remains the same.
Inflation dollars need to be on the street. We’ve already seen wall street “create money” since there is something like 30 trillion in leverage out there and when those trades were made there was transaction fees etc. Those fees turned into yachts and villas and more “investments” which are leveraged and “evaporating.” Make believe wealth – easy come easy go.
UBS basically lied about their net worth / value so a write down is only admitting that their inflated balance sheet was BS.
Oil exporters are spending money on huge projects in their countries and buying up assets/business and properties around the world and HERE in particular because of the general deflation of bubble based sectors. They are also pouring cash into businesses which were severely leveraged and would close when investors run them. Bad bad bad.
Real inflation will be when the gov gives money to consumers. This will immediately raise consumer prices.
But the inflated balance sheets of financial institutions and corporations is nothing new. They do it to drive their share price up, dump stock and or leverage more credit to then trade useless financial instruments. Enron was an ace at this and these wall street wizzes love to create value from thin air and then do what banks to – sell debt!
key thing there is “future presidents” and the “future president” can of course issue their own signing statement that says “bush was a moron and everything he did, said or claimed is illegal”
me, that’s my first order
no
real inflation comes when big buyers are bidding on the goods they need, consumer demand is a fraction of the equation
If the reaction Bush got at the ballpark while he was throwing out the first ball is any indication …. my wish is for the people of the world to give him a piece of their minds should he attend the Chinese Olympics.
Bush NOT go to China for a sporting event? (Real sport, not betting.) Not going would jeopardize our supply of technology, data services, car parts, computers, toys, clothes, shoes, puppets and money, er, credit.
A man of Old Testament profligacy, obsession and excess can’t afford not to see his source; he could never survive the detox if he tried to do without it.
I remember ronnie’s AG sec. I also remember the beginning of W’s first term when the Chinese forced down one of our planes (that happened to be spying on them). Bush rattled his sabre pretty hard until he got a call from his uncle (Prescott?). Seems his uncle was in China on behalf of the US Chamber of Commerce, and the Chinese walked out of the meeting after the incident. Bush backed down the retoric real fast. Mustn’t forget the huge Big Mac / Mochachino market in China is much more important.
Nancy Pelosi… Nancy Pelosi?
She of the hundred-year-old Armenian issue, the Tibetans and the Chinese, and now the Olympics? She wouldn’t be telling Bush anything if she had done her job and impeached him and his co-conspirators.
She should be run out of office and charged with obstructing justice.
Nancy Pelosi. Nancy Pelosi? Jeebus!
