Joe Sudbay of AmericaBlog and Reverend Lennox Yearwood delivered 32,000 signatures to the FEC, cosigning the complaint filed last Thursday against John McCain and his campaign. It took three reams of paper and 1,400 pages to print it all out.
This morning at a McCain event in Alexandria, McCain was introduced as a "hero" because of his work in campaign finance reform. Right. The guy who helped to write the law now doesn’t want to obey it, just because there’s nobody around to enforce it (thank you George W. Bush for gutting the FEC). The McCain campaign’s defense is "Obama did the same thing," but that’s a crock. John McCain applied for public financing. Obama never did. John McCain was accepted into the public financing system. Obama never was. The chairman of the FEC, David Mason, says McCain is therefore still in the system and bound by its limitations, but McCain is just ignoring him.
It goes to McCain’s character. He believes the law is for someone else, not for him. He’s chiding Obama for not agreeing to public financing, even as he’s 4 million dollars over the $54 million spending cap imposed by the public financing system.
For Thee But Not For Me. The John McCain story.
You can still cosign the complaint here, and you can tell your friends about it here. We’re now at 34,350 signatures. We’re gonna keep doing this until somebody starts paying attention.

Yay!
Go Jane!
No media on this yet? No NYT? No WaPo? Not even McClathy?
This seems overdue–maybe they are waiting for 50k in co-signers.
So!?
“So?”
;)
IOKIYAR
Good job Jane. And everyone else invovled.
Go, go, go!
Do as I say, not as I do.
Send to Olbermann?
Wasn’t Edwards signed on? McInsane is probably confusing Obama the terrorist with Edwards. /s
This is so frustrating, I know what’s going to happen.
1) McCain will ignore the FEC and spend away.
2) The FEC can’t really do anything as it lack a quorum and will continue to do so until 1/20/09.
3) After that, the FEC will find the campaign gulity, fine them the Max ($25K?) and the campaign will acknowledge their interpretion of the law is incorrect.
Boxturtle (Lather. Rinse. Repeat.)
I thought Howard Dean was their excuse? Either way, they’re full of it.
You need to hold a press conference about this!
Goose the press!
Bush/Cheney have pissed all over the constitution. Why should anyone expect McCain to comply with FEC’s rules. This should be no surprise and considered par for the course.
Btw, my above was NOT intended to imply what Jane is doing isn’t worthwhile. It’s the only chance we have of getting any attention of the issue prior to next year, even if it’s a slim one. But if we keep hitting both his faces on this issue, we just might make inroads into the Vital Middle voters.
Boxturtle (I told you McBush would be our best spokesman!)
dan balz co-wrote a piece in today’s wapo about mccain’s fundraising plans and nowhere in the piece was it pointed out that mccain was in defiance of the law.
FEC McCain!
w00t, great job!
digg it!
The one attribute, more than any other, that would make McCain’s the Third Bush Term.
I’ll say it again, what a jackass
Sam Stein, over at HuffPo, mindlessly repeats this line from the Boston Globe without faulting it:
I think we should try to get Feingold to sign it
Feingold?! We want publicity! Get Paris Hilton to sign it! Or Bradjelina (sp)!
Boxturtle (Happy April Fools!)
O/T
can you all help me decide what to bake to take over this afternoon? Apple cinnamon cake or banana bread/ cranberry bread?
Good afternoon all. I signed.
Dan Balz is just another priviledged media elite insider. Just another of the courtesans.
Didn’t I read somewhere that if the FEC doesn’t act on this complaint within a certain number of days (120?) then a complaint can be filed in the regular court system — or am I confused?
cranberry! and drop a loaf off here if you don’t mind.
Also OT, Cassie has posted a wonderful video of some high school kids in the Bronx talking about race, politics and Obama. These kids sound inspired.
Definitely need to call attention to this…someone mentioned KO. But let’s face it, no one in the media wants to be disinvited from the rib parties
Wow..powerful video and it is thrilling to see high school kids engaged in political and social discussions.
Of course, I would make a special loaf for you *g* I have way too many leftover frozen cranberries in the freezer
Banana Bread–with pecans!
The man (McBush), is an amazing candidate in that no one, no freakin’ ONE, really believes anything he says and yet he skates over daily issues like Hans freakin’ Brinker.
Jane points this out.
Hell, Ron Paul supporters point this out, but the MSM are breaking their spines trying to bend over backwards for this guy. What gives?
I watched today on MSNBC (The liberal network????), several pundits do the heavy lifting to get Johnny Boy out from under the “Hundred years in Iraq,” comment.
They can’t lift a finger to explain Reverend Wright never said the victims of 9/11 got whats coming, but they’re breaking their freakin’ backs to explain some shit that fell out of McCain’s mouth, as it frequently does.
I ask again, what gives?!!!?
While I am blogwhoring, today’s news and blog posts just popped over at my place.
He’s practicin’ for when he’s Preznit, thinkin’ of all the fun he’ll have signin’ laws he won’t havta obey, ‘cuz he’s the one s’posed to enforce ‘em. Jus’ like Bush.
And OT, but Fafblog!’s back.
Jane – Thanks for staying committed.
Perhaps contacting the “friendly” media will force MSM to stop ignoring McCain’s blantant law breaking.
Aiming at the General Public:
Have you contacted Bill Moyers, NOW, 60 Minutes, Frontline, The News Hour, Washington Weekly, KO, Air America. I know people can add to this list. I figure more people watch TV and listen to their car radios than read print media.
for you, I would make it with nuts, but some of the kids have nut allergies so I have to leave them out.
… add California Golden Raisins with the Pecans … and a nice pot of tea with cinnamon and cloves …
*Give em heck,
HarryHamsher !!!Homeopathy cures nut allergies, and most other kinds … we’ll go O/T on Late Nite … *g*
oooh! We have food allergies–milk mostly but my son just had a mild reaction to peanut. What will help?
Remember all those people yelling what we need is campaign reform? Where are they now? Lots of Conservatives were in the front row yelling how this is the problem. Even Rughtwingers. Have they melted into the ether?
There are BigMoney-approved politicians. BigMoney owns all major media. The bosses tell each newsroom what and how to cover most stories.
I used to work for a BigMedia news outlet. We got the daily fax (at that time) with “suggested” stories from Corporate headquarters thousands of miles away.
There are individual reporters/producers that believe in the essence of Journalism, but they are handcuffed by those signing the paychecks.
My fellow Liberals often act surprised by the ridiculousness of BigMedia over the last 20-30 years, but this is all carefully planned to be this way. It’s all ON PURPOSE in order to keep the electorate voting in BigMoney candidates.
When you keep this in mind, it’s much easier to understand, and makes clear what we need to do, which is what that video shows. Which is what the New Media is all about. We’re just getting warmed up. We all need to get more people hip to what’s goin down, and we need to get them onboard
looking forward to hearing about it but they aren’t my kids and they already think I’m weird because I am a raw foodist.
Seconded.
Who are you baking for?
Contact me via FaceBook, I’m a yoga/meditation teacher and I know a few good Docs in the field or you can go through a referral …
I thought the video was really well done, unscripted, right on point.
Can Congress pass a law to change the name of the McCain-Feingold act?
Someone here can probably come up with a good name to rebrand it with.
I know what you mean, some people are close minded to alternatives …
I sent the CNN video on Jane delivering the notice to the FEC regarding McCain breaking campaign law to my most Liberal family member. I didn’t urge her to sign just check out what was going on as reported by CNN. I received an e-mail back saying, “I wouldn’t sign that. Are you nuts!”
Hummmm! Another reality. Lurking but keeping a very low profile.
woo HOO!
I like Jane’s
Thanks Bonkers.
I knew that was the deal. You can smell it like a carcass decaying in the other room but I didn’t know whether it was horse or zebra. It’s good to hear the gist from someone who’d been in the trenches.
The whole Punch -n- Judy show that is the daily MSM offering would be less able to occur if there were simply a more discerning ear on Joe public.
I mean, alls ya gots to do is listen for shit that you hear again, and again and again. I’ve lost track how many times I’ve heard the term, “Honest broker,” today. The irony is that some balls on dishonest broker put them all up to it.
It’s a twofer, Bush wrecks FEC and McCain exploits that and breaks the law.
McCain has learned well from his mentors. So, who’s going to do anything about it even if I break the law. Who’s gonna make me obey it? How? Naanaanaa!
I like,
Compliance Is For Suckers-Feingold Act
Seriously. Talk about another “I am the law” freak executive.
Yay for the Dim Angry Old Man!
He got 32,000 signatures!
Yay for him!
Wish I had health care…
yay
Wiping liquids off monitor.
cbl2, was that yours or did someone else coin it?
it was me -
belated thanks for the link you provided me the other day :D
Thanks, I will (if I can figger out how to register)
That is what needs to be emphasized…he’s willing to break the law and hide himself behind those who repeatedly break the law in government…to get where he wants to go. He represents everything the country hates about the current administration. Everything. He’s a phony.
family friends (their mother suddenly passed away)
Oh, so sorry. Glad you are there for them.
well, i just sent out more letters…..more letters……more letters…..
i attached the 24 contest quotes at the end. i’m tired and rushed today, could have beeen worded better, but since last week, since Ali’s murder, i have new rules about letters, better sent rushed and sloppy than not at all…
if you get stuck in the perfectionist side of whether they’ll read it or not because of how it’s prosed, then you must not be laying out the facts quickly enough.
just write the freakin’ letter and send it.

Dear —-;
News outlets are not mentioning something about the McCain presidential campaign this week.
The FEC sent a letter to Senator McCain saying he is in violation for procuring a loan using his federal funds agreement as collateral for a private loan. (Not to mention he is, as of today, $4 million over the $50 million of contributions he is allowed under public financing rules, which is another violation.)
I have read the two letters from the FEC to Senator McCain, I have read the private loan agreement, I have read the letter that Senator McCain sent to the FEC.
It appears he did violate the same rules he helped make into law. He is not cleared until the FEC has a quorum, meets and ’rules’ that he did not violate them. As it stands, the FEC says he is in violation.
Why aren’t reporters reporting this?
Dan Balz wrote about McCain’s campaign finance plan today in The Washington Post, no mention of the violations.
so, if he is on your show this week, or if this is a topic, would you please bring it up?
(After having read the documents.)
It is ironic that a presidential candidate is trying to flout the same laws he pushed to enact.
And noone in the press is covering it.
McCain has two former FEC members on his campaign committee, he was quoted, after it was announced that he was in violation-”Mr McCain said: ”We think it’s perfectly legal. One of our advisers is a former chairman of the FEC, and we are confident that it was an appropriate thing to do.”
Hmmm…could we maybe beat McBush’s BBQ with Wobblybits baking? Then the MSM would be on OUR side!
Boxturtle (FDL baking contest? I Volunteer to be a judge. Winner tries to bribe the McCampaign bus!)
Jane, here is another suggestion. He is a heavy hitter ubt it’s worth a shot.
New York Times reporter Eric Lichtblau. He has a new book about Bush¹s Law: The Remaking of American Justice. Lichtblau won the Pulitzer Prize for exposing the Bush administration¹s warrantless wiretapping program in December 2005.
Remaking justice has multiple tentacles and one of them is disregarding campaign finance reform.
I like your style dmac
“keep doing this until somebody starts paying attention.”
…how much did that Petraeus ad cost?
Latest FaBlog — John McCain: Pet Shop Boy
PS… if this war lasts as long as Johnny McFlounder plans, he will be 180 years old!
Seriously, though, this is worth a fundraiser appeal for an ad in the major markets…
It’s part of my DFH mantra…we have to help one another
That’s how I live my life as well.
There’s something odd about this picture…can’t put my finger on it:

here’s the battle cry for democrats;
“when did the goal become staying in Iraq?”
January 2001?
This is PNAC’s plan since the nineties. Cheney is on PNAC’s board.
thanks elliot–back atcha….
(bbl have to go clean out my car now–dropping it off at the shop later.)
We have to do something, we have no justice department to file charges now. No one to stop him from being the nominee no matter how he may not be qualified according to the requirements of the job description itself.
It is a sad joke. wonder what the punch line is going to be? Will we know before November?
McStrayCoque is the kind of guy that would be on his knees thanking the king with all hands and orifice if he declared martial law because he knows he can’t possibly win the election but soo, soo wants to serve. He will serve an important place in the new regime entertaining guests with his whimsy as the new secretary of war.
oh, just caught the numbers at the top as it was loading– i got a number wrong $54 mill cap, not $50–thanks jane!
and thanks everyone for your links and facts, i use them. for good. really. heh heh.

Per CNN: Bush is poking sticks at Russia now…way to go W.
Keep your eye on who is his veep. McCain is a silly puddy puppet who will be molded as the power brokers see fit and discarded when they are through using him. His dysfunctional mental capacity and age make it easier to move into phase two.
Platinum Plated, First String, UberPhony -
ya know LS, before the Isemann story broke, thought I had a good handle on his crap and his ‘base’ and their fawning deference – since then I’ve spent a little time almost everyday looking stuff up and we are up to our eyeballs in hypocrisy
Can you imagine what they would have done to Feingold had he, upon passage of the bill went out and opened an anti-softmoney advocacy group in a lobbyist’s office ?!?!?, or when they found out said advocacy group was mere cover for the Kings/Queens of soft money to donate to Russ and his lobbyist BFF Davis ?
do ya think they would’ve let ol Russ just quietly resign from the group’s board without hanging him from a bridge over the Potomac first ?!?!?
beyond disgusting
perris-been waiting to be on the same thread–after what you said about your dad the other day—-i sent this-
((((goodguyperris))))”I just don’t want him to be alone” most powerful thing you have ever said.

and i posted this a couple of times today, can’t get over it–not an april fool’s joke!
this is ’rich’ with irony-
news announcement that 1,100 lawyers in ohio are volunteering to advise homeowners in financial trouble to help them keep their homes.
then,
usbank commercial advertising equity loans, ’interest rates lowest ever’
When you start messin’ with China or Russia you gonna get your a** whipped real bad.
I noticed that too. MSNBC has actually been doing this all weekend. They were comparing Obama’s somewhat confusing remarks about McCain’s 100 years statement and then McCains rebuttal of what Obama said. They are making it appear that McCain knows what he is talking about and Obama is inexperienced. They always give McCain the last word.
I wouldn’t get my hopes up. This will siphon down the same drain as Ron Paul supporter’s claims that McCain is an illegal candidate because he wasn’t born in the USA. Well, the technicality is that he was born in a Panama territory and that’s only a slight bend of the rules. Similarly, he was in…now he’s out, the FEC–if there even is such a thing anymore–won’t waste an hour on a “technicality.”
Thanks to the historical revisionist machine of George “I never went AWOL from the National Guard” Bush, a Republican candidate should never have to face the music from now ’til kingdom come. Everyone’s bitching about it, but it seems to me it’s a great time to be a Republican. Why be a Democrat? Ya gots ta answer all them pesky questions and be truthful and all…yek!
I’m down for that. I make some mean lemon bars
Marshen, I want to hang with you if it’s still the weekend in you’re part of the world, regardless of what the talking heads have been instructed to say by the pointy heads in ivory towers ;-)
thank you so much dmac
Ha, ha, I meant they have been showing the Obama-McCain clips since last weekend. (It is always Saturday on Mars!)
Wouldn’t every single campaign expenditure beyond the legal limit be a count, with a $25,000 max fine for each?
It’d be nice to see a hefty fine for, say, every carryout order from Starbucks . . .
ls at 73–i looked for that the other day, to send to a friend, and i hadn’t bookmarked it!
thanks
Balz was on Washington Week last Friday. He’s so full of Beltway cw that his iris’s are brown. I don’t have cable so I force myself to watch this National Journal sponsored circle jerk each week. Sun Tzu says to know your enemy. Geez, what a bunch of hacks. Raditz drives me crazy when she goes on there and says how good we’re doing in Warforeverland. I give her lots of credit for spending as much time as she does over there but for cryin’ out loud, one would think she’d open her eyes once in a while. She was on Charlie Rose a while ago and I thought I was gonna puke. Balz doesn’t have any.
Maybe there was a Bush signing statement that makes it so.
Hi Petro, are you familiar with the NAET program? What is your opinion of it? (I’ve had 3 episodes of reactive pneumonitis, the last with 9 days in ICU on a vent, so, yes, my queries are real serious!) I’ll check late night to see if you respond.
