Two contrasting stories on CBS' 60 Minutes illustrated for the hundredth time why selecting the right person for President matters. In 2000, the American people made the right choice in voting for Al Gore over George Bush, but five conservative justices of the Supreme Court overruled the people and instead installed perhaps the most lawless regime in American history. We have paid a huge price for the Court's lawless dishonesty.
The imprisonment and torture of innocent people. President Bush surrounded himself with men and women who have little respect for the rule of law but plenty of zeal for giving the executive branch expanded powers unchecked by the Constitution. The created a Justice Department without integrity that sanctioned massive warrantless spying on Americans, kidnapping, rendition, secret prisons, indefinite imprisonment, the suspension of habeas corpus, kangaroo trials and torture. And the Administration is still lying about it all.
From 60 Minutes' story of the innocent German man we kidnapped, tortured and held for years at Guantanamo long after authorities knew he was completely innocent:
CBS) At the age of 19, Murat Kurnaz vanished into America's shadow prison system in the war on terror. He was from Germany, traveling in Pakistan, and was picked up three months after 9/11. But there seemed to be ample evidence that Kurnaz was an innocent man with no connection to terrorism. The FBI thought so, U.S. intelligence thought so, and German intelligence agreed. But once he was picked up, Kurnaz found himself in a prison system that required no evidence and answered to no one.
The story Kurnaz told 60 Minutes correspondent Scott Pelley is a rare look inside that clandestine system of justice, where the government's own secret files reveal that an innocent man lost his liberty, his dignity, his identity, and ultimately five years of his life.
. . .
"Have you ever in your legal career run across anything like this?" Pelley asks [detainee counsel] Baher Azmy.
"In my legal career, no," Azmy says. "But in Guantanamo, no detainee has ever been able to genuinely present evidence before a neutral judge. And so as absurd as Murat Kurnaz's case is, I assure you there are many, many dozens just as tenuous."
The campaign to save the planet. Had we had an honest Supreme Court, we would have had a very different man as President. However he might have responded to 9/11, it is certain Al Gore would never have invaded Iraq and equally certain he would never have destroyed the Constitution's Bill of Rights through illegal spying on Americans, nor would he have trampled on statutes and treaties outlawing abuse of prisoners and torture for the sake of a mindless "global war on terror." But our nation would have been leading a global effort to deal with the threat of climate change.
From 60 Minutes' interview with Al Gore:
When Al Gore ran for president in 2000, he was often ridiculed as inauthentic and wooden. Today he is passionate and animated, a man transformed. His documentary, "An Inconvenient Truth," won an Oscar, and last year he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Now he's a certified celebrity, the popular prophet of global warming, and has helped change the way the country thinks about the issue.
And yet while 70 percent of Americans believe global warming is a big problem, they still rank it near the very bottom of their list of top 25 concerns.
And so Al Gore is about to wage a new campaign to emphasize the urgency of what he says is the greatest challenge facing our time.
It also matters whom we select as Vice President. When Lesley Stahl noted that Dick Cheney dismisses the validity of global warming, Gore observed,
"I think that those people are in such a tiny, tiny minority now with their point of view. They’re almost like the ones who still believe that the moon landing was staged in a movie lot in Arizona and those who believe the earth is flat. That demeans them a little bit, but it’s not that far off."
In his next speech, George Bush will tell us again why we have to spy on Americans, or occupy Iraq indefinitely. Nobel Laureate and Oscar winner Al Gore will soon launch a $300 million advertising campaign to convince the world we need to act on global warming.
Update: Nicholas Kristof's op ed captures the point well.

mornin firedogs! caw!
al is the man, the man of our times, he will launch that project during the presidential campaign and mccain will be forced to run against it
if there are elections this cycle, we cannot loose
…huge price for the courts lawless dishonesty…
The Court was rewarded though, they got a solid majority of young rabid ideologues that will plague us for decades. So depending on your point of view….
but I am being very optimistic here, I do not believe there will be elections, I believe they have set to grand a table, prepared the constitution too miticulously and they have amassed too much power
I believe the odds are in favor of elections being suspended by this administration and whoever it is that is pulling the strings of these marionettes
that pupeteer is NOT cheney, he is as much a marionette as bush, there is someone/thing else pulling the strings
herhaps it’s the pnac as a whole, perhaps it’s the heritage group as a whole, perhaps it’s the saudi’s, so powerfull they summoned cheney for meetings and cheney jumped to it like he was dancing on red hot coal
By MSM. Gore was/is a threat to unrestrained corporate greed as Edwards would have been. Not so much with the remaining corporate mouth pieces.
they can be run out by the next president, they can be embarrassed into retirement, it has to be overt, these judges and attorneys have to be called what they are, “bush appointees infiltrated to overthrough our constitution”
they must be called out overtyly and immediately
It’s the metal munchin moon mice of frostbite falls, they are coming to get you.
My sense of the 60 Minutes piece is that is was a wasted opportunity. Leslie Stahl stinks. Despite all Gore comes off as a very dignified man who wants to really save our planet and is doing something about it. Politics, it appears, seems to be not the best way to make global consciousness changes.
He’s right.
well, he was wooden, it’s hard to say he was inauthentic since he believed what he said and his record showed it
then I saw his speach about the signing statements and the constitutional crisis, I don’t have a link but that was the most authentic and moving speach I have ever seen by any man, this includes both kennedy’s
Perris,
I agree that someone(s) are pulling all the strings and driven the entire agenda to achieve their objective of hegemony.
Conspiracy? You betcha.
Good morning Scarecrow. Thanks for another thought provoking article.
I don’t normally watch 60 Minutes. Mrs. Bilbo does though, and when I heard they were doing a story on Murat Kurnaz I went and watched with her. That story was devastating. America is the greatest country on earth. I am so proud to be an American. It made me want to cry.
Mornin’ Scarecrow -
thought this (lower image) was sign the apocalypse proper was upon us :D
I believe here is the transcript of the most moving speach I have ever heard
http://www.washingtonpost.com/.....79_pf.html
I’m sure you must see it in person to appreciate
off to the gym, see all later
I just can’t believe that those nasty republicans would keep trying to SCARE us when we can be SCARED of a real honest to good conspiracy. Are you a good witch or a bad witch. Boogie boogie
The 60 Minutes segment was a virtual indictment for war crimes. Yet no one has ever been held accontable. The German man was released only because of German Chancellor Merkel’s intervention with Bush.
The story could have easily been about the innocent Canadian we kidnapped and imprisoned. Or . . .
honest to god
embarrassment is not in the neocon’s lexicon. Getting rid of the judges is a generation or two away. The neocon/fascist judges have been infiltrated into the “justice” system since the raygun administration and they will be there through obama2 if not obama3. The next prez. is/can certainly going to replace all/some of the USAs but trying to change the mindset of the cops and other “law” enforcement officials from that of the jack booted fascist as is preferrd by the neocons to sane and understanding law enforcement is going to be a greater problem.
In case you missed the major league baseball opener for the Washington Nationals, ThinkProgress has the video of Bush throwing out the first pitch. You can boo along with about half the fans.
That link is in the post, second half. And it was a great speech.
Bush is too busy licking his chops and rubbing his hands at the prospect of all that moolah he’ll make on the lecture circuit. Democrats combat global warming and build homes for the homeless.
Republicans? It’s all about the fucking money and personal self-enrichment.
g;mornign sandero, want to comment on your post from last thread before I go;
they have no intention of leaving period, they are building am “embasy” the size of the friggin vatican, they are not leaving
they allready have what they were really after, control of the oil, not access, control, they WANTED less supply so competition coudln’t keep prices at that level
and they wanted unrest, they want no peace in the middle east, they want unending war
this is their very plan, it is their method of stealing the treasure of the entire middle east and the middle class of america
war is a raquet but there must be war for the requet to profti
they invented war, now that they have it they will perpetuate it
now I am not speculating, we know as a fact this is the cheney and rumsfeld plan, they did it with nixon when peace loomed large they invented threats they knew as a fact did not exist so they could have unrest, war and profit
they are the brokers and profiteers of fear and they have what they want, now they are going do their best to keep that product
it will be up to us to end their depravity and bring them to the bar of justice, up to us to confiscate the treasure they have stolen and return it from whence it came, back to the middle east and back the the middle class and infrastructure of this country
our strategy must be an overt one that overcomes their covert strategy to put these activist judges in place
if we call them out for what they are, site their appointment and their decisions, a successfull lawyer can use that information to change venue and jurer
and they will time and again be called out
knowledge is innoculation
ok, must go to gym, bye all
yes raven, they have fear, they are the brokers of fear and the mindless follow their lead
must…work…out
c all later
Yes, by the same Dems who have done such an outstanding job of defending the Constitution and holding George Bush accountable. Sorry, blue monday.
hopefully our new democratic president will erase that yellow spine
I also want to repost from downstairs, it is on point for most topics till the election
you know what I want all the democrats to start asking?
“when did the immediate withdrawal from Iraq become not one of the administration’s goals”
THAT is what I want them to start asking, remember this;
“when they stand up, we’ll stand down”?
or what about this;
“when they want us to leave we will leave”
the administration PROMISED we would leave when the Iraqi’s no longer wanted us there
now don’t jump down my throat, I know as much as anyone this president’s words mean absolutely nothing but here is the point;
the democrats can start CALLING FOR WHAT THE PRESIDENT SAID HE WOULD DO
and make HIM deny what he said, but make it brutally clear, the democrats want WHAT BUSH SAID WAS THE PLAN when they talked this country into this ridiculous unprovoked invasion
Nicholas Kristof’s op ed Sunday nails the difference in Presidents:
I know you’re on your way out but I disagree - they do not have control - that is what the incursion in to Basra is all about - 5+ years, horrific untold loss of life, $3 Trillion, and inability to date to nail this down - they’re not even good at playing Robber Barons
JLML - did you catch Tavis Smiley nailing them on this on Maher friday night ? (his comments come at end of youtube)
What does Sandra Day O’Connor tell herself everyday when she gets up and realizes it’s another day in the “paradise” she created? Has she had all the mirrors in her house removed so she doesn’t have to look herself in the face?
Or the president can nominate professionals to head executive agencies, or he/she can foster cronyism, partisanship, religious mullahs and general corruption. Has Hugh added this one to his list yet? Embattled HUD chief set to resign.
I have no idea what will happen in Iraq in the coming years but if, and I say IF, the reports this AM from Mcclatchy and Juan Cole regarding Irans involvement are true, then I have to tell you that we are in big trouble!
I guess Hugh and Selise are on top of things:
I watched 60 Minutes and, once again, could only shake my head in disbelief that, after everything I’ve been taught in my long life, and after winning World War II and the Cold War, we turn out to be the bad guys.
Yup, Bush sucks. So vote for the Dim Angry Old Man, right?
He’s an FEC crook, but I don’t care.
Yeah.
Vote for the Dim Angry Old Man!
Yay for him!
Here at the end of Amerika’s 400 Year Reich.
“Stupid is as Stupid does.” We’ve tried Stupid. Let’s try Smart for a change.
Well we can’t exactly expect Iran not to be involved, just as we can’t expect Saudi Arabia to call Cheney over to chew him out for Shiite domination (I am guessing that is what is happening.)
D E F E A T E D !
I meant to say we can expect Saudi Arabia to jerk some strings, particularly Cheney’s.
G’morning Scarecrow and crowlets. I’ve mentioned this before, but the concept of Bill Clinton as a Supreme Court justice seems to me the best possible way to extract vengeance on the regressives and make the balance of the Thomas/Alito tenure a living hell for them.
Good morning Scarecrow!
After watching spend so much time trying to define “is” and trying to weasel out from a perjury conviction, he’s the LAST person I want on the court. I want somebody who’s going to uphold the law, not try to weasle it to suit himself.
Boxturtle (I still think he’d make a good Sect’y of State. Weasling is a job skill there)
Also, there was that little issue of the 5-year disbarment and resignation from the Supreme Court bar…
Yeah, because, you know…Gore is a *grown up*…!
And the “wooden” thing always bothered me–what do they want? A clown making faces? Give me a person who represents the United States in a dignified manner anyday!!
I certainly relate to that one! I was in the same boat, raised in a Military family educated in several DoD schools, I believed it all. I knew it wasn’t perfect, but I ate up the greatest Nation on Earth crap…
Where are my manners?
Nice post, Scarecrow. Good morning everyone.
Okay, okay. Clinton on Supreme Court, negatory.
Another clay pigeon incoming: Gore as candidate who emerges from a brokered convention. Fire away, Gridleys.
lol, not me… i just play host.

Citizen billjpa and the Firepup Freedom Fighters:
“…IF the reports from McClatchy and Juan Cole are true, then I have to tell you that we are in big trouble.”
I have to tell you that we have been in BIG trouble since December of 2000 and this Spring session of Congress is our last chance for the Democrats in Congress who let this fascist junta succeed in hollowing out and outsourcin’ our democracy…the last chance for them to stand up and take the bastards down.
I am more concerned about the proposal to give the Federal Reserve complete control of our domestic economy than I am about the continuin’ mess in Iraq…the Democrats are gunna hafta stand up and smack the fascists down with good old fashioned politics. Turn the Federal Reserve proposal around and reinstitute the securities and exchange regulations that the lack of which since Reagan have created this mess. Make the Federal Reserve MORE dependant on the executive and the oversight of Congress…this makes all the decisions about policy and economy POLITICAL with the sunshine of political debate and success or failure hung on folks who hafta seek election or re-election.
In Iraq, there is no way that this country will be faked into supportin’ an attack on Tehran and , in fact, I believe that the oil oligarchy wants Iran ta take over a rump Shiite Iraq with a sunny and Kurd confederacy. The fascists who have run this country since 2001 have been in bed with Iran since 1980. Look at what we are left with when Bush and his fascist henchmen are done in 2009: a bankrupt federal treasury, a fascist federal court system, a hollowed out military that can’t protect the homeland against tax-payer financed corporate mercenary armies and a federal civil service completely packed with fascist sleepers from Bob Jones and the other wingnut Havards.
No, we’ve been in big trouble for a long time but we have an opportunity to change things beginnin’ with this primary contest. I’m all for Mrs. Clinton-McCain stayin in until July, by that time she will have been forced ta vote for the Bush proposals to privatize the rest of America or join the forces of progressive opposition…either case closes the door on the Presidency for her.
KEEP THE FAITH AND DON’T LET THIS MOMENT GO…NO COMPROMISE WITH FASCISM!!
Selise — when does Congress come back? Or have they resigned in mass embarrassment and shame?
Oh, don’t be silly. They didn’t want a clown, they wanted a “regular guy,” you know, someone you’d like to knock back a beer with. Well, they got the clown anyway…
Is it time to throw Liberman out of the party yet?
From Time, quoting Joe on ABC’s this week:
Words fail me.
Boxturtle (If the elections go as I think they will, Joe can kiss all his comittee seats goodby)
you can listen to that gore speech here.
1,796 DAYZ AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND…
Citizen Barbara:
Because he is a “grown up” and a patriot and VERY smart, the only way Al Gore shows up on the ticket this fall is as Vice President. And as for Mrs.Clinton-McCain on the Supreme Court, Lord have mercy have we not all learned that she ISN’T a progressive but a Goldwater Republifascist?
KEEP THE FAITH AND KEEP THAT WOMAN AWAY FROM MY CHILDREN!!
LOL - if only.
today, 2pm.
Money talks bullshit walks is the Neocon mission statement.
Ultimate power corrupts ultimately. Read Krugman today calling Bushshit.
Morals and kindness are seen as a weakness in the good ol boy system.
Neocons have a sworn mission…to destabilize any regime that resist exploitation.
Only top eschalon know the details for hegemony.
Keep a close eye on the nukes.
So where is the UN inspection teams? Russia, Pakistan, India?
Scott Ritter says we have only one months supply of conventional bombs.
Why do you think he said that?
Be afraid…be very afraid…of this conspiracy if they can stop Impeachment…they have no fear…they are about to impoverish America we are to much trouble… their friends around the world are much nicer than we. The wounded animal is most dangerous when cornered and he has the red phone. Struggle every moment.

I don’t see Jane’s name. But Digby and Emptywheel are there.
Bush foreign policy is in shambles, the economy is in the tank, Bush’s poll numbers are scrapping the bottom of the clueless barrel, and McCain says he basically agrees with Bush on his signature decisions. The Democrats should bury the Republicans in November, and yet . . . McCain leads the Dem candidates in most national polls, because the national media think McCain is just a swell guy, Hillary is a walking negative and Obama sat in a pew too long.
The Republicans are easy; the Dems will have to defeat the national media if they want to regain the White House.
On Fox News, yesterday, Lindsay Graham repeated 5 times that the Iraq Army was fighting “Iranian-backed” militias; at one point, he said “we’re fighting Iran” and Wallace didn’t push back. Instead, he tried to divert Jack Reed from contradicting Graham, by asking him something else.
Bobo says McCains speech was wonderfulness iteslf and separated him from Bush; Broder said the same thing. Then Bob Scheifer. Neither mentioned that on the only decisions that matter — to invade and to surge and to not withdraw, McCain violated his “we won’t act unilterally but will listen to our allies” principles — the ones that the media applauded.
In case you didn’t realize. Neither candidate is a progressive. I do prefer however Clinton’s healthcare plan to Harry and Louise, not to mention social security v. social security-problem framed in a republikan manner a la Tim Russert.
i’ve found gore-watching to be a fascinating past time since 2000. in many ways, i think he is a much better leader for having lost the presidency (please note i did not say that he lost the election) and the apparent period of introspection and refocus has done him, and us, a world of good.
i can’t forget that he’s the same person who went to kyoto to represent the clinton administration and sold us and the planet’s climate down the river. i didn’t have much respect for him in 2000, but boy do i ever now.
Hi everyone
I will so love to support a Pres who loves the country and will fight not plunder.
I hope this primary will be over soon. We have work to do.
On that note, I wish you would go over to Kos and look at this diary.
http://www.dailykos.com/storyo.....706/487448
This has upset me this morning as I remember that Larry was a favorite over here for a while. He was even on Keith many times.
Whomever you support, this goes beyond what I can accept.
Do others contribute? Or is it all Hugh?
Has anyone come up with a coherent plan to slap the media back into consciousness? Other than repeatedly e-mailing and calling them on their stenography? (I thought I was depressed before… *G*)
History has witnessed Russia, Germany and China try to correct what was thought to be misguided cultures in their respective countries…that is why Dems need to step up and defend democracy to prevent ‘the people’ from tearing it apart and rebuilding it into something they really don’t want.
Mighty Scarecrow, please no more Gore and the Clintons.Just Obama and thereafter.
Ah, Norkse, there is no redemption, then, is there? Americans have no real way to atone for the combination of circumstances that brought in the clowns. Elections 2000, 2004, Supreme Court appointments et al. I am half-heartedly supporting Obama. The other half circled around Hillary once and resolutely walked away. (Do hearts walk?) I’m a state convention delegate, and I’m toying with the idea of attempting to become a national delegate. Maybe I can get a heart transplant in Denver?
Oh, my Supreme Court thingie was about Bill, not Hillary.
She says the same now as then: “I did it for the good of the country”. You know, the, “anything is better than chaos” argument.
Unfortunately, this is the path that those without courage, take. The path of least resistance…and conflict…with the powers that be.
people do send in suggestions… but it all hugh’s - the idea and every word of it.
(p.s. did you see ET’s “hugh’s scroll” ?)
There is a secret plan to gradually displace the influence of MSM with blogs and other personalized electronic media. Shhhh!
In the meantime, we will hammer them with ThinkProgress, Crooks and Liars, Media Matters, Digby, Glennzilla etc, and that Hamsher woman. and emptywheel, who I suspect is one of those aliens sent here to help our species survive. They do that.
Oh… “that Hamsher woman” … I think I’ve heard of her. Doesn’t she have some bloggy thingy all full of rabid lambs and foul-mouthed feminists?
What, you don’t like fair and balanced?
Mighty?!!! Have some coffee.
Holy moly. What a great display for students. I like the idea of putting it in the student eating holes, (laminated) so they can read as they suck down caffeine.
He’s going to need all thay “moolah” for his legal fees and PR expenses. Once he’s out of the White House, there won’t be as many stenographers following him around, and he’ll have to pay out of his own pocket for the flacks he’ll need to get out of standing in the dock at The Hague.
I remember in college psychology, reading about an experiment: subjects were more prone to like a movie if they received stimulants, rather than placebo or downers.
I didn’t know 60 minutes was (finally) doing a story on Kurnaz. I guess they might just as well and as easily ask themselves why - now that all the MCA debate is over and we have officially killed habeas -NOW, they suddenly decide to report on some of what has been going on and been being reported in foreign press for a long long time.
And remember, even if Kurnaz was treated well and with kid gloves at GITMO, it is a clear and unequivocal war crime to have taken someone who was not a combatant, someone who was a protected person, and disappearing them out of country. Kurnaz, and every single other person who was not a combatant shipped to GITMO. And his is just one story. Judge Roberts has his fairly famous “kafka-esque” references in his case, yet still the press stayed silent.
If there was any good in having the Supreme Court choose against Gore (and this is precious little good, at best), it would be that his choice for Vice President was poor. Would we now be looking at fielding Joe Lieberman as our candidate in 2008? What a strange idea that seems, now.
Bomb, bomb bomb bomb Iran. Agree with it or not, I am glad they take on Conyers for his rather equivocal sorta “we might start impeachment proceedings” if (the worst should happen.) And how are we going to hold both Dem candidates nose to this?:
LOL!!!
Bill hasn’t done any real lawyering in a very long time. I know he’s a smart guy and her sure knows how to parse a question while undergoing discovery, but isn’t he a bit of a stretch for the Supreme Court? Besides, how in the world could he obtain Senate approval for that?
Hey, Mary. yes, our media have been in a fear/lies/false patriotism induced trance, and they’re not out of it yet. America lost it’s soul — the most profound, most gut wrenching political story in a century, and most of our media missed it. How else to explain McCain leading Dems in national polls and no one demanding the White House be purged?
Just imagine that crazy McCain-hand holding twerp in charge of the “football.” *shudder*
thanx selise, from the time I saw that speach and we were given an oportunity to see the actual man we knew as the vice president, my admiration grew exponentially

“In case you didn’t realize. Neither candidate is a progressive.”
And neither was FDR in 1931 and durin’ the ‘32 campaign…he took an overwhelmin’ Democratic majority in the first 100 days of 1933 and LED them into enactin’ the “New Deal”. Now, ask yerself how a child of a white woman and a black man becomes president…well, first by bein’ nominated and then bein’ elected riddin’ whatever wave the people are able to generate. Look at Obama’s voting record “en toto” and his body slam of the DLC…his initial base was the black vote and progressives, and he has voted is constituency’s self interest over since he’s been elected. If you think a black man with the political intelligence and courage this man has would turn to the dark side against his own experience and the collective history of his constituency (which includes poor whites and progressives) then yer watchin politics on Venus er some place like that!
And finally, this primary and the coronation of McCain for the fascists make it politically impossible for Obama to run AGAINST a progressive politics…he can’t win by out Republicaning the two Republican fascists he’s runnin’ against. One step at a time…this black candidate thing is new to all of us!
KEEP THE FAITH AND TAKE CARE OF EACH OTHER…AND DON’T LET THAT WOMAN NEAR MY CHILDREN OR THEIR FUTURE!!
Scarecrow, great post, however I must reject this predicate:
Why do we accept as inevitable that 9/11 would have happened under Gore’s watch?
I think we’ve done far too much acceptance of phony predicates the last seven years. It’s part of why BushCo persists. Yesterday on Meet the Russet, Timmeh framed a question to the CIA chief about NSA wiretapping with the predicate after 9/11….
We can’t let this crapola go unchallenged. Like the people in the stands [conveniently edited out of the old-school Very Important Media coverage] booing Bush at the ballpark, I’m standing up and just saying no more….
in fact, 9/11 could NOT have happened under gore
bush was given PRECISE intel telling him where, when, what, how, how we would be attacked…even the specific targets
the man had a successful template to follow which ANY president would have followed and IMPROVED upon
instead this president STOOD DOWN, he REFUSED to act, he REFUSED to put our assets on high alert and HE INVITED the catastrophe
it is NOT possible we would have been attacked on 9/11 had AL gore or any president that was not a puppet of the pnac been president
it could not have possibly happened
Mary…let’s face it the corporate culture is rotten to the core. And they own the media…the media is very well paid to do what they are told. Their is no empowerment in the American persona…we are all rolling rocks uphill trying to live the middle class life ala “The Rat Race”.
You can’t embarrass people that have no principles. No shame.
Now maybe Al has figured how to educate the masses to enlightened voters Thomas Jefferson style.
To all have yourselves a great week. And remember Freud said…”wit is an intent to injure.” Something Limbaugh has taken to the bank.
If any political personality currently displayed on the world stage is more likely to bomb Iran, Joe Lieberman may be surpassed only by Dick Cheney. If you buy that (and I think it is a valid point for discussion), it is easy to see how the Democratic party can be fragmented, based upon the conflicting choices we seem to make for the highest office in the land. Is something like that happening again, today?
Cheerleading is all good and well. So is wishful thinking but how are you going to answer Naomi Klein?

KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNITION…IF YA CAN’T MAKE UP YER MIND YET YA BETTER FIND SUMPTHIN’ A LITTLE LESS CHALLENGIN’, LIKE TAKE A NAP!!
I have two points to make: first the above statement is based on a false premise, that Al Gore is transformed from an inauthentic and wooden person to an animated man of passion. I’ve never believed that all the while that the press persisted in cramming that down our collective throats. He was perceived as wooden and inauthentic mostly due to his (mis)handlers and the press reporting things in their worst possible light. Much of what he said was deliberately misinterpreted, his statement about having “created” the internet, for instance.
Second, I had hoped to see someone write about Michael Hayden’s interview on Meet the Press yesterday, and I’m still hoping to. He keeps insisting that at no time were Americans on American soil ever spied upon, contrary to all other reports. He also persists in saying that only overseas conversations were tapped.
Christy has a new post up about the Working Poor.
Is there a psychiatric diagnosis for war mongerers like Cheney and Lieberman, I wonder?
I can’t find “evil” in the DSM-IV manual.
Yes P Sunshine good call… I read Richard Clarke’s last book describing the National Security team under Clinton and the lack of interest in early Bush administration he ignored Clarke’s pleading. Too vile for words.
No 911 no war WTF
God Complex
Exactly.
As I offered up yda around here, how does the media get away with ignoring these things?
I mean, they’re ignoring stories that could lead to war crimes?
Watergate made two reporters rich and famous, and they actually had to work to get the story; here, you could go to your public library, spend a half hour online, and come up with literally hundreds of leads that could eventually imprison half this administration.
I do like fair and balanced.
which is why I doubt there will be elections, unless the president resigns from office, the vice president pardons him, resigns from office and then the next president pardons the once vice president, these despots should fear for their liberty
yet they have no fear, I do not think there will be elections
