Howie has worked his rear end off trying to find progressive candidates for Congress who can make a difference for all of us if they are elected in November. Finding good Blue America candidates isn’t easy, but Howie sure does some fine work for us — and bringing them to all of you so you can talk with them yourselves. But to get them in office, we have to pitch in a little. Donna’s right — we want our candidates to win without having to go begging on K Street. So they are beholden to everyday Americans and not just the corporate special interests.
Can you donate $10 to a Blue America candidate today?
Yesterday, I highlighted a lengthy NYTimes piece on Tom Cole, the head of the RNCC who is having a heckuva time finding people who want to publicly admit they are Republicans and run for office. Let’s all take a little time today to consider chipping in ten bucks to make his job even harder. It’s the neighborly thing to do, don’t you think?
Because, frankly, the GOP has earned it. And our Blue America candidates have worked their rear ends off to put them in just this spot. It’s the end of the fundraising quarter today — let’s show them how real folks make change happen.
Can you spare $10 for the Blue America candidate of your choice?
And, if not, do you have some free time that you could put to good use for a Blue America or local progressive candidate? Because we have a whole lot of folks who could use some help with phone calls and canvassing over the next few weeks. And they’d love to have you on their team!
PS — If you need some extra incentive, contemplate this: Mean Jean Schmidt’s face if Vic Wulsin outraises her this quarter? Or Susan Collins if Tom Allen outraises her? Truly, pick a Blue America candidate…your $10 could be what puts them over the top in fundraising this quarter. Imagine how sweet that would be!

Drive-by on my way to school – Can we PLEEEEEZE find someone in Arkansas to challenge Mark (Gang of 14) Pryor (
DR Wannabe)???Evening all — how’s tricks?
$$ sent. Happy to be able to do this. Go Dems !
Hi, Christy. Thanks for the reminder post. Great job.
How’s your weather?
Hi Christy!
Is it possible to add a candidate to the list? If so, I’d like to nominate Bill Durston, a progressive candidate running in CA-3 against the repulsive Dan Lungren. Here’s a link to his positions on many of the issues that matter to people on this site.
Thanks
I can’t take seriously anybody who hasn’t been endorsed by the DLC.
[yes- this is sarcasm]
I’ll suggest sending money to Gilda Reed here in Louisiana. She’s running against Nazis in David Duke’s area of the state. She needs alotta help!
Ten bucks to Noriega in Texas with a tip for Blue America.
$20 bucks sent to a candidate, with a $5 tip for Blue America. Wish it could be more.
I’m in.
With a progressive Class of 2008 reinforcing the Class of 2006, the next Democratic Congress can do great things.
Another wonderful candidate is Jim Neal in North Carolina. He needs a victory in the Democratic primary against someone who supports telecom immunity and tax cuts for the rich, just so he can help this state retire Elizabeth (rubberstamp Republican) Dole. Jim is an outsider who has run a real grass/netroots campaign, where I am happy to give up a couple of mornings to volunteer. He is the guy we mean when we talk about ‘more and better Democrats’.
Gave $20 to Jim Neal coupla weeks ago. Had a flat tire today, so can’t throw anything in at present, but will next paycheck.
;(
More and Better Dems…!
Howie Klein does most of the legwork on the Blue America candidate list, and central to the decision on whether to add someone to the list is not who that candidate is up against, but what they stand FOR. There are lots of reactionary GOP members of Congress that could use removing, but not all of their opponents measure up to the progressive standards of Blue America.
I’m just passing this along as general information, and it’s not intended as a comment on the candidates mentioned earlier in this thread. Rather, if you have someone you think is worth considering, make sure you push their progressive spirit as well as the lack thereof in their opponent(s).
I would like to see Andrew Rice elected to the U.S. Senate from Oklahoma to replace the abominable Inhofe. Rice is a Blue America candidate.
Yes!!!
If you visit Liddy Dole’s site you will find several references to her “visits back to North Carolina” that she references. Visits, mind you! She herself doesn’t even identify herself as living in my state! Believe me, it is clear that she is only a North Carolinean by virtue of being born here. She only shows her face in this/my state for fund raisers when Bush or some other Repub honcho comes to town. It has been that way since her election.
It is time that NC had its own representative, who is not a DC denizen, born and bred.
Jackie Speier is running in a special election to replace Tom Lantos. She is certainly going to win but will need to run again in November and is a great candidate.
It’s jackieforcongress.com

Weather here was lovely today — thought it was going to rain, it was cloudy a lot of today, but it was nicely warmish (about 50 degrees or so) and all the daffodils and tulips are out and cheery. We’re just on the cusp of the fruit trees blooming, and I’ve got leaves budding out on my pretty shurbs outside the sunroom windows.
All in all, a nice day here in paradise…how about you?
Rick Noriega post and chat: Barnstorming Across Texas, Jan 31, 2008
Sunny but cooler than we normally have around April Fools’ Day. Am looking hopefully at my sandals and sleeveless shirts :)
close to 80 here today and very sunny! … 50 is winter weather for me!
Thanks Peter,
So I should just send my plea to firedoglake [at] gmail [dot] com? Or is there a more direct way to reach Howie?
Digg won’t let me Digg this post.
Scratch that.
Because I trust Howie’s “pre-vetting” of the candidates what I did was find the candidate who had received the smallest contribution from the Blue America page. I thought I’d maybe encourage someone to keep on keeping on that way. I root for underdogs a lot now — go figure — I was born and raised a New York Yankees fan in the 40s and 50s… Maybe I’m paying off some karmic debt?
I think he’s running unopposed.
I de-lurk to report my belated action for Blue America candidates. I popped $10.00 for every listed candidate plus once for Blue America itself plus once more for Rick Noriega of my current state of residence. Even OldDogs have to push the pack in the right direction sometimes.
Thanks so much — really appreciate it! And, now that you’ve delurked, you’ll have to chat more often. *g*
Why is EW’s Yoo post upstairs? Complete with all the comments from yesterday? A glitch in the system?
It isn’t, on my screen…although there is a link to it there…
Now, EW’s post IS on my screen…
I just found out that we will perhaps have a Democratic challenger here in Florida’s Sixth District. I have emailed the candidate to ask for position information. I hope he is a progressive!
Nasty here in North Carolina. Rain on and off heavy, in the mid to high 40 degree range. Daffodils have come and gone. Don’t have any tulips. Bradford pears have bloomed and are now shedding blossoms. Rosebuds are in full bloom. Dogwoods haven’t yet blossomed.
It was 80 degrees Saturday, and in the 40’s on Sunday.
What can I say? That’s NC weather for you. Hoping for a return to 80 degrees.
Heh, When I had first returned after reading a Wapoo article, it was front and center, I did a hard refresh and it disappeared, but the link remained…
Boo- Blue America is one of many sites under the larger site http://www.actblue.com/ So any credit card problems you had (I did the same thing once, too) have nothing to do with BA per se, rather with the way Act Blue is set up.
And, btw, the tip goes to Act Blue, not Blue America. Act Blue sends 100% of the $ to the candidate, and the tips go to keep the site up and running, and to pay their staff.
Blue America does not get tips. Howie and everyone else who works for BA does it on a totally voluntary time-donated basis. If you google around you can find the FEC reports that Howie has filed. At one point he had to EXPLAIN to the FEC why BA had no costs and no overheads. Quite unusual!
Running against whom, Jim? (Your link leads to a site under construction)
Wow, OldDog! Glad you “de-lurked,” and we hope you’ll not be a stranger.
That comment was in response to 34 above. I’m having trouble with my “replies” not showing up as “replies.”
FWIW, I’ve found that if I attempt to reply while the site is processing/loading, the reply doesn’t always take.
Running against Republican Cliff Stearns. He’s one of the worst Bush rubber-stampers around. He has strong ties to the telecom community, so I’d love to see him attacked on retroactive immunity and warrantless wiretapping. The district has a lot of rural conservative people, but I think they will understand privacy issues. It also is home to the University of Florida, so there are a number of professionals in the district, too. About the only time Stearns has come into the national spotlight is when he joined a few other wingnut congresscritters in chastising PBS when Sesame Street in South Africa came out with an HIV positive character.
I knew the site was under construction, but I just wanted to get the name out there. I know nothing about the candidate but did email to the info address to ask for position information. A quick note in the Gainesville paper this week about him attempting to qualify for the ballot misspelled his name.
Thanks, Jim.
Hope he turns out to be a good one.
Hardball (second showing) just showed tape of Bush getting booed at the ball game…LOL…
I wonder if he had armor on under that Nationals jacket…
Whats a KOS?
Thanks for this post. Nice Job.
I also want to make a plug here for Dennis Shulman. He’s running in NJ-5 against Scott Garrett, an extreme Republican ideologue that is way out of touch with his moderate constituency in the district. Check him out and spread this word. Shulman is the type of candidate that makes me proud to call myself a progressive.
