In a telephone interview shortly after he walked out of a federal prison in Oakdale, La., Mr. Siegelman said there had been “abuse of power” in his case, and repeatedly cited the influence of Karl Rove, the former White House political director.
“His fingerprints are smeared all over the case,” Mr. Siegelman said, a day after a federal appeals court ordered him released on bond and said there were legitimate questions about his case.
(…)
The former governor, a Democrat, said he would “press” to have Mr. Rove answer questions about his possible involvement in the case before Congress, which has already held a hearing on Mr. Siegelman. On Thursday, the House Judiciary Committee signaled its intention to have Mr. Siegelman testify about the nature of his prosecution.
How many lives does Karl Rove have left? He wriggled free of prosecution for outing Valerie Plame, and the clock’s running out on the US Attorney firings/coverup investigation – could this be the one that finally brings him down?
Also, as Scott Horton points out, there’s complicity and stonewalling all over the Obstruction Of Justice Department, including Chuck’s BFF Mukasey:
Committee investigators express concern about the Justice Department’s continuous obstruction of efforts to investigate political influence in the Siegelman case and a group of others in which prosecutors have adopted unprecedented theories in an effort to take down prominent Democrats. In the Siegelman case, Justice Department officials have refused to provide evidence under oath, claiming privilege, they have answered written queries with misleading and openly false statements, and they have refused to turn over documents requested by the Committee. Attorney General Mukasey has been repeatedly asked by members of both the House and the Senate Judiciary Committee to examine the extraordinary evidence of misconduct by the U.S. Attorney’s offices in Montgomery and Birmingham, and he has declined to do so….
Congressional investigations are not just about the satisfaction of taking Republican scalps. They are about demonstrating that the laws of this country still matter, and that there are consequences for breaking them. As long as the Republicans are allowed to operate in a culture of impunity, to use the law as both sword and shield, American democracy is in jeopardy.
Which is why it’s so vitally important that the investigations keep going, past "exposure" and all the way to "prosecution" (preferably by Fitz). When our next president is sworn in, the Democrats must not simply breathe a sigh of relief and declare that "our long national nightmare is over" – they must finish.

Go get ‘em Siegelman!!
Hey Eli!
Hey, LL!
Didn’t Rove remark that he expected to get indicted by December?
Wait until after 1/20/09.
No Pardon!
Aloha, Eli!
Excellent post, and great news. I surely hope KKKarl will be paying for his transgressions…
I think he was just messing with us.
ELI
xxxxxxxoooooooo
Aloha, CTut!
Hiya, sadly!
Evening Fdogs! This is the American Justice system working despite our imperial president and his cronies!
somebody PULEASE wake me up from this nightmare
mebbe impeachment will renew my faith
John Conyers says oral arguments are scheduled for June 23 for the Contempt of Congress charges against Harriet and Josh, and expects a ruling soon afterwards…

I’m hopeful that Siegelman will get off, what with being pretty clearly innocent and all, but it’s an incomplete victory if those who wrongfully prosecuted, those who conspired to wrongfully prosecute, and those who covered up the wrongful prosecution, are not held accountable.
gosh he really shouldnt rush it
To have Karl Rove in jail at some point for any of his numerous crimes would add so much to Bush’s legacy.
I prayer for Don. I wrote for Don. I am sooooooo happy he is out. And talking!!!!!!!!
I think with democratic wins in congress and the senate, we’ll see these things come to fruition. Plus we need to have democratic appointments to federal courts again.
‘Tis a consummation devoutly to be wished, as someone once said. I think it was Andrew Dice Clay.
I love that he was wearing the prison garb for that first mini-interview! Abrahms said that he has handlers now, and that that was why he was unable to be on the program tonight. (Plus, he had to have been beat!)
I need a timeline.
When did Rove leave the W.H.??
What was happeneing those days???
Hey Eli, hope you’re doing fine.
In fairness to Conyers, he did ask for an expedited hearing from the DC Circuit…
Eli, thanks for this great post. Let Freedom Ring!
They should make good
roomates.cellmates with Cheney…menage a trois (I can’t do accents with my puter)…Just sayin’.That sonofabitch Mukkasey is turning out to be as bad as Gonzales. It’s all about protecting his fellow criminals from Bush and Rove on down (note the recent dismantling of the unit investigating loathsome Duke Cunningham associate Jerry Lewis). There is no Justice Department.
menage a assholes.
hasnt it been over a year?
Worse.
No pardon!
See, that’s the only thing that gives me hope about impeachment being off the table. These criminals cannot be pardoned if they wait. Also, war crimes ahead…
Ewww….
BTW, pray that when the Dems take power in January that they don’t decide to let the endless criminal acts and enterprises from the Republicans go unpunished. I personally would hate to see olive branches extended to grifters and grafters and war criminals.
It’s the difference between Can and Will. Absolutely, it will make prosecution possible, but will the Democrats want to keep hunting these people now that the Republicans are out of power?
It *shouldn’t* change anything, and a crime is still a crime, but I have this gut feeling that they will consider removal via new management to be sufficient (”They’re out of the government where they can’t do any more harm – why should we keep pursuing it?”).
Mukkasey is worse that Gonzales cause he is smarter. Fucker.
Ménage à trois.
There ya go!
For the vote in the House for the initial Contempt charges… Of which I blame Hoyer and Pelosi…!
Hey, Quebecois, I’m good, hope you are too.
I think emptywheel actually *did* have a timeline shortly after Rove left, but I could be confusing it with something else. My recollection was that it wasn’t anything particularly earth-shattering, but that might just be because I’m thick.
I think they will, once they have the ability. And I am not by nature, a cock-eyed optimist.
-Thanks! How does one do that?
I need somebody to help me understand why Mukasy took this job? What’s in it for him?
Gonzales could argue he had no idea what he was getting into. Not that he’s deserves sympathy. But Mukasey knew exactly how awful he would be from the get go.
Thank Senators Schumer and Lieberman.
I wonder if he gets extra slack so as not to embarrass Schumer for promoting his nomination.
Personally, I think embarrassing Schumer would be a bonus, but you know how these Democratic congresscritters are – they don’t even like to embarrass *Republicans*.
I think Waxman, and probably Conyers and Leahy, will not want to call off the dogs, but I don’t trust Pelosi and Reid not to pull the plug.
Agreed. Plus he’s competent!
he looks like this guy from RAIDERS

Word
Certainly the democrats have learned their lessons about not prosecuting people after the number of criminals who have been ruining our country for the last 7+ years. Top people from the Nixon administration, and the Iran-Contra people from the GHWB administration. (Who is specifically from the Reagan admin?)
I’m not sure they will maintain house leadership once we get new blood. I think if these folks go home to their districts and they return with a mandate, they may develop some spine and become more active. I think this is what american voters are asking for … i think you’ll see the street fighters gather more allies
As do I, unfortunately.
And Feinstein. Although it seems to me she voted the right way on one part of this…
Don’t forget Diane.
Ashcroft Defends Contract for His Firm
Posted by Mr_Bill on Wednesday Mar 12
Democrats Questioning No-Bid Deal, more than $50 million
Former attorney general John D. Ashcroft defended a government-sanctioned contract yesterday that could earn his consulting firm more than $50 million, saying that nothing is improper about the selection made by one of his former U.S. attorneys. Ashcroft has come under scrutiny from Democratic lawmakers since he accepted a no-bid contract to oversee the operations of a medical equipment company that is accused of giving kickbacks to doctors…
stuff like this
Rove’s gonna play the “broken wing” thing…deflect and get pardoned….
He’s definitely working full force for both McBush and Romney right now…things can and will change…A long time ago, I read that he had big connections to Ahnold….sooner or later someone will try to change it so he can run…He’s in line….but stuck.
I hope Siegelman puts the tubster out of business once and for all.
Siegelman
Spitzer
Governor of PR
All Dems…in a short period of time…come on….
There is a pattern here….W said the Governors must all become Pukes…they have a plan, and Muccus Membrane is helping them….
I fervently hope and pray when the new congress is seated , Dodd would supplant Reid, and kick Liarman off the Homeland Security committee…!
I wish I could be so sure. I think they’re still afraid of the political witch-hunt accusations, although the best defense against those would simply be to point out the industrial-strength irony.
you do not…i met you …hahahahahaha
Not until the Gang Of Fourteen and any other Bush Dogs have been sent packing along with the reps who have been heavily influenced by lobbyists. Lets see, who does that leave remaining?
Isn’t that the kind of free market this government has been all about?
I tried to forget her..) My hands are bloody since I have voted for her more than a few times in my SF daze.
you better PRAY that Mary Landrieu gets re=elected … i don’t want another senator VItter.
I believe that Ahnuld is readying himself to run for DiFi’s Senate seat. He would love to be in DC playing with the movers and shakers.
And my fear is that even if we solidify the Democratic majorities, progressives will still be in the minority of the Democratic caucuses. Meaning that the Establishment Origami Dems would vote Pelosi and Reid back in, because they like being allowed to do whatever they want with no consequences.
Lèt’s see if this wôrks… Works in preview.
i think that’s a legitimate concern. However, i also think the electorate has rated the congress lower than the prez, and that should be sending some messages out
You’ll have to wait until ‘10 for my state to retire Inouye, trust me, I’ll be working feverishly to make it happen…!
The Raiders guy, Jan-Michael Vincent, Leonard Nimoy, and *both* Blues Brothers are *all* people that I have been told I look like.
My little sisters saw Airwolf on TV once and really thought it *was* me. They were pretty young, though…
I’ll put Debra Bowen up against Arnold!
With a bilingual keyboard. We can get those in Canada, no charge.
fukkkkkkerz
He has his eye on the prize ultimately. If the Dems f-up…he will get there
eventually.
Maria. What is wrong with you!
of course ….this is my look alike
http://www.nancyrawlinson.com/images/kim1.jpg
It’s ‘cuz of the obstructionism! Fortunately, if we have a Democratic president, they won’t have to worry about *that* accusation anymore. Just “weak on terror partisans who hate America”.
How? I’m envious that you know and I
That would be good. We don’t seem to have anyone else in the wings although I’m sure there are several who think they are ready.
and I don’t know how that happened!!! LOL
exactly!
i want regime change…now
Awesome. The only reason I didn’t get your number was ‘cuz I already have a girlfriend who is Teh Awesome.
However, IIRC, didn’t Reid win by only one vote over Dodd, when Ben Nighthorse voted for Reid then jumped ship and switched parties…?
Nooo…that’s me!!
me, too.
Thanks, LS. I was half way remembering that Rove quote and about to go look for it. Rove knows it’s coming. I wonder what HE thinks will finally take him down. I wonder if we even know about it, whatever it is.
oh shit the new benz 80 mph to 0 in 4 seconds…hot fer dam

Oh No, Abrams has Kinky Friedman on…! ;-)
This is my latest portrait:

That sounds vaguely familiar, but I can’t find any reference to it.
Shame that someone with a cool name like “Nighthorse” would be such a dick.
aw….thats nice im all about non human animals now,i devote my life to them!
Mary, did you catch MoveOn’s reply to the big Clinton donors and Pelosi fiasco yesterday?
In MS Word “ctrl + ‘” then letter, or “ctrl + `” + letter. Be careful on the ^, cuz you gotta hit “ctrl + shift + ^” then letter.
Try it… You’ll like it.
;~P
You would get along really well with my Teh Awesome girlfriend, then. And my mom, for that matter…
…if ya have Word, that is…
Did someone say Paraguay?
Neil Bush, Moon, Paraguay & US Dept of Education
Hey Eli –
This type of gangster behavior on the part of Rove/Bush Inc is why impeachment is imperative — the power of the pardon is absolute, except in cases of impeachment.
If the House even holds committee hearings on the Rove/Bush/Cheney crime syndicate, a case can be made that said hearings have crossed the Constitutional Art II Sec 2 threshold of negating the power of Bush’s pardon.
Than^ks..I hope I ge^ it. *g*
Seriously, I will try that..I appreciate the help. I’ve always wondered how to get the accents.
Here is one of my responses to the big Clinton donors:
You can tell Susie for me that she does not own the Democratic Party.
The people do.
I find her letter to Ms. Pelosi offensive.

Ok.
Thing I’d like to know; are these the people that put impeachment “off the table?”
You mean it ain’t just ’bout water?
Is that your real hair? *s
“Texas Tea”
I used to be pretty lukewarm on impeachment, but I’ve been in favor for at least the past year or so.
Right now the Democratic leadership looks like a DA who has just said that he won’t charge someone for murder because it would just be too divisive.
I really wish impeachment were something that could be settled by an actual court, rather than partisan congresscritters who will vote their party affiliation and ignore the facts.
Good question.
Just add Kool Aid.
LMFAO
Nice! I’m pretty sure I figured out who you are when you said you take care of animals.
Love it.
yea on a good day
ahwwwwwwwwwww!
thank you
Rove an address in Paraguay? hmmmm. maybe a house at the compound? better be a BIG compound. but my money’s on that he’s got SOMEPLACE, somewhere. You KNOW he’s got SOME kind of plan. Besides the hope of beating everything hands down.
Muck Fucasey.
-G
There’s a place for us…somewhere..a place for us..
that’s what I think, if it looked bad for him, he’d take off and disappear
Karl Rove, Fugitive works almost as well for me as Karl Rove, Convict. Maybe even better.
at least schumer called em out early.
Paraguay could be really buggy…and with nowhere else to go….hmmmmmm…
Where did they send Napoleon again? Alba?
nah, I want him in Guantanamo
May he drown in the aquaphor.
Hola! Beunos tardes, Bon Soirre, and hiya!!
It would be poetic justice to put him, Dubya, Cheney, Mukasey, and Abu-Squared in there… but I’ll be satisfied (and very pleasantly surprised) if they’re locked up anywhere.
Hiya, jayt!
Eli – Thanks for covering the good news tonight. After all this time the whole story is still hard for me to believe.
well, i think there’s a good chance we could, but we need a change in the justice department. There’s going to be a lot of openings when we the dems get the presidency back … my guess is there’ll be a lot to go after
It’s going to be a matter of political will more than anything else. I wonder if anyone has asked Obama and Clinton whether they plan to sic the DOJ on the Republican evildoers or not. I’m still enough on the fence that I would happily switch my allegiance to whichever candidate promised accountability.
Well, except McCain, of course. Even if he did promise it, I wouldn’t believe him.
very good point … some one should do that
I’m pretty sure that I spelled most of that wrong – which would then explain why the on-line dictionaries were telling me to fuck off and die……
We cannot afford another ‘bygones’ President leading our country. These miscreants must be brought to justice. It will take a long time, and much courage, but the American people must demand it of our new leaders.
How about devoting the next Vice President to “cleanup of political toxic waste?” Restoring the rule of law will be a fulltime job. Siegelman is just the start. Let the sunshine in on all Rove’s nefariousness, Cheney and Abu Gonzales too.
eli says-”How many lives does Karl Rove have left?”
as i was reading i thought this was going to say ”how many lives has he ruined?”
someone the other day commenting said siegelman was being roughed up in prison…….then i heard that he was going to speak before a committee–oversight? couldn’t remember, so, i called conyers office, and said that when he was questioned could they make sure to ask him how he was being treated in prison. voice mail.
(sander0 and bonghead, left comments in last thread)
so says the little turtle with the spunky bullhorn. h/t eureka.
My VERY red uncle from South Dakota thinks McVain is a snake and said he will not vote for him. I said “Good on ya… You just stay home.”
I hope he is true to his word. Great guy, he is.
i agree, they don’t stop it if we just slap them on the wrist, either that or they show up on AM radio with some talk show
I can tell you the French one is “bonsoir”.
And don’t forget little DiFi.
I noticed that that was the very first reporter question after Siegelman’s statement, but he wasn’t talking.

just ask who they are going to appoint as attorney general and you’ll have you answer.
How about devoting the next Vice President to “cleanup of political toxic waste?”
Got anybody in mind? I’m somewhat sure that Mr. Lieberman isn’t gonna do it……
Who could we be talking about? I think Gore and Edwards would kick ass, but I don’t think either of them wants to be a running mate again. And somehow I don’t see Fitz going on the campaign trail…
When listing Democratic governors ‘taken down’ by BushCo, don’t forget Kathleen Blanco of Louisiana and Gray Davis of California.
If there’s never another criminal in government, there’s enough here to study for the rest of my life!
I can tell you the French one is “bonsoir”.
Oh – NOW you tell me………….. *g*
eli at 137– if it happened, i hope he speaks up and they pay.
i thought of abramoff in his condominium prison, and it made me so angry.
The history books will be interesting for your grandchildren. Just imagine what they will be like.
Is there such a thing as a “forensic historian”? ‘Cuz they would have a field day with the Bush Era.

Rove Named in Alabama Controversy
He sure looked grim and pissed off as he got into the car, so it wouldn’t surprise me in the least.
oy vey, that’s the statement of the millennium.
So?!!?
How long has he already been in jail?
Backatcha downstairs.
Alice Martin is now head of the Criminal Division at DoJ Headquarters, and slow-walking every prosecution of a GOP, right?
Nothing new here…can’t we get some new news? /s
Get that son of a bitch
And then get the rest of the goddamn criminals that have cast such evil over my country, every last one of them.
ok, this is probably asked but there are so many posts I don’t know if I can find the answer;
is there a pool for how long the president or karl throws out an executive priviledge claim?
I know, I know, even the administration wouldn’t be that stupid but I contend they will be that stupid
so, is there a pool?
I want the week after a subpeona is issued
All in good faith…I’m sure.
Wow. Can this AP headline up on the Yahoo frontpage be anymore loaded?
http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20080329/pl_afp/usvote
At least they left out “Insurgent” Obama, and used raid instead of “jihad,” which was probably how it was originally written.
Maddy for President!
Looks like nine months.
Hopefully he will deliver a bouncing baby indictment. Maybe even triplets!
aha, I just did a search on this page and there is no result for “executive”, which means I am probably the first to bring it up
ir you guys remember, I have always said, “the more exposed they are, the more brazen they become”
and believe me, this is exposed extraordinear, I suspect supreme brazenosity
They have already shown their willingness to use executive privilege for anything and everything, even when they simultaneously claim that Dubya knew nothing about it.
So my pick would be either immediately upon issue of the subpoena, or shortly before the subpoena’s deadline.
Absolute exposure brazenizes absolutely.
OT: The rapidly widening Obama/Clinton spread:
Rasmussen: Obama 46%, Clinton 44%
Gallup: Obama 50%, Clinton 42%
Pew: Obama 49%, Clinton 39%
OTOH, both Clinton and Obama seem to be dropping relative to McCain.
and that will bring them down, I am positive the public outcry will be too great
I said even before this case aired on 60 minutes that this case would be the very cog that broke the wheel that brought down the coach
this is it, rove claims executive priviledge and the wheels come off
I am positive
Dan Abrams (so here’s your saltshaker) said tonight there’s no ExecPriv claim to be made, because Rove’s conversations were with the DoJ HQ folks, not the Preznit. Of course, if Rove makes an ExecPriv claim, that’s grounds for impeachment, since it involves the Preznit in a way not yet known.
ExecPriv, until this Admin, protected conversations with the Preznit only.
nice saying, I will go with that!
eli at 148
good
good sign
that kind of demeanor means it’s personal
he’s gonna make them pay.
Hey Eli!!!
I thought it was telling that VP Pusbag claimed that Gerald Ford’s pardon of Nixon was the boldest thing in the world.
Keep getting that thought out there, right Dick?
-G
May well have ramifications for US elections ‘08. From BBC News:
But they *already* blew that up with the US Attorney firings, where they claimed executive privilege, *and* insisted that Dubya was not involved.

Well, just look at this shit via bmaz:
ok, here’s the scenario;
rove has tied his boat to the pear with a bush on it
rove cannot afford to throw bush under the bus, but bush cannot afford to take the blame bush will throw rove under the bus
rove will find a way to blame cheney rather then bush
man, my mind is fantasizing
this is really gonna
It takes a strong, courageous president to pardon a blatantly criminal predecessor. I don’t think Hillary or Obama have the stones. In fact, I *dare* them. I *double-dog* dare them.
I think the first step is impeach Mukasey. You must light a fire under Justice and this whole administration so that they know you’re serious. The way the Congress has acted so far, they’ve been all dodgy and equivocative, but this has actual backing from 52 State Atty Generals per Abrams (how that works, I’m not sure) both Dem and Rethug. If Mukasey refuses to be forthcoming, you start an investigation into Obstruction of Justice charges based on the letter that gained Sieligman’s release and the fact that the US Atty General won’t investigate how this happened. That is clearly Obstruction and a fellow on Abram’s show said another crime. It must be done this time, even though they’re kinda busy running for office and playing politics.
had to keep it fair and balanced.. release a d from jail means they gotta release an r from jail….
lol, that put a smile on my face :)
Works for me. Being Dubya’s AG would be a lot like being the drummer in Spinal Tap.
wudda worked better if it read FLYING instead of lying…. (sheepish look on face)
that’s not gonna fly, the first step is gonna have to be cheney in my mind
that’s if bush doesn’t throw a hissy
if bush throws a hissy and invokes teh priviledge on rove, and doesn’t back down, the democrats will have absolutely no choice…it will be bush
I am getting carried away
pelosi has no table so there is no impeachment on a table that does not exist
bed, see all mamana or later, whichever comes first
Am I allowed to throw up some music on an Eli thread?
(Serious question)
If not, I’ll be quite happy to STFU, but on the off-chance:

Suz!! A most excellent evening to ya!
It might not take all that much courage. They greased the skids pretty well for Scooter’s
pardonclemency. Sometimes I think they can get away with anything, as long as their guys own the news business.eli was being facetous, it takes a coward to pardon a friend who will turn states evidence if you don’t
believe me, eli was playing the oposite game
Sure, it’s almost Late Nite anyway.
Little background from Take Back the Media: Sept 13, 2004
You can see why the wanted this guy ‘disappeared’.
Now that you mention it, that did sound pretty funny …
hey eli – excuse my bad manners in neglecting until now to say woohoo!
I think if they start proceedings to impeach Mukasey the whole dept. becomes a lot more cooperative in record time. They would have to get amenable, and Rethugs cannot hide or say they’re just trying to go after Mukasey for political reasons, or they can be made to look like they are guilty of collusion. The entire House is up for re-election come Nov. How do they get around this–We desperately need a vigilant press to keep this in the public eye and to stress that the State Attys Gen. were of both parties. That way House Repugs can’t play that game. Does anyone know how long before Siegelman’s appeal?
I really like that idea, and I especially like your phrase, “cleanup of political toxic waste.” I nominate Chris Dodd.
Bob in HI
It’s very handy when your allies control what people read and hear about. If blogs and alternative media can reach a critical mess to start giving people cognitive dissonance, that strategy may no longer be viable – if everyone knows the propaganda is propaganda, it loses all its usefulness.
If you don’t start with Mukasey, DOJ won’t be compliant, won’t do their part of evidence production or arresting anyone for not showing up for subpoenaed appearances. You have to start with Mukasey, as I see it. Right now, he’s the obstruction that’s standing in the way of progress.
Suz!! A most excellent evening to ya!
Ahem.
Why is it that the really pretty ones always ignore me?
I have to say Eli, your icon always reminds me of slashdots’ microsoft icon. :)
its gotta be someone not in politics that does the clean up. someone who has the neutrality, experience, and work ethics of say… fitz
*sigh* do you really want my full attention jayt?
Heh. I was actually trying to take a picture of my stubble, then realized that it was an unusually good photo of me – I usually photograph very badly.

Perris, don’t you see? When Pelosi said impeachment is off the table, I think she meant Bush. I don’t think she’s entertained the notion of impeaching people like Mukasey or Rove, or Lurita Doan or any of the others. But without Mukasey, they won’t be taking anything seriously at the DOJ. They think Dems are already whipped puppies that have nothing left to do. If they want to be taken seriously, you have to prove a willingness to take the major obstruction to task. Everything else then falls into line.
I’m a bit concerned that Suzanne may be a Terminator.
but hasn’t a clue….

If there is any justice left, Mr. Rove will be frog-marched in handcuffs for his role in politicizing our judicial system. He is a despicable person!
