We’ve had over 26,000 people cosign the complaint to the FEC against John McCain for campaign finance law violation (Christy has the background here). We’re going to be delivering the signatures on Monday to the FEC with the help of Joe Sudbay of AmericaBlog and Reverend Lennox Yearwood, and we’d love to get to 30,000.
This is what Mr. Straight Talk said on the floor of the Senate in 2003 (h/t bemar):
The purpose of the presidential public financing system is to allow candidates to run competitive races for the presidency without becoming dependent on or obligated to campaign donors. That purpose is undermined when a candidate opts out of the system to raise and spend large amounts of private money for a primary or general election race. Such candidates should not be able to reject public financing and then get the system’s benefits when it suits their tactical advantage. A candidate should have to opt in or out of the system for the whole election.
John McCain doesn’t just change his positions to pander to the fundies, he also does it for his own political convenience. Flauting the very campaign finance laws he helped to pass — "for thee but not for me" — makes it clear that he’s not a maverick, he’s not an independent, he’s just a garden variety Republican hypocrite.
If you’d like to add your name to the complaint, you can do it here.
And if you have friends you’d like to tell about it, you can send them an email here.

Wow!!!!
So wow!
Congratulations Jane! Lookin good on CNN too.
Wow. Wow. Wow.
Well right now on CSPAN 1 is the National Young America’s Foundation, dedicated to Conservative Movement recruitment. Karl Rove being introduced now as the headliner.
w007! 26,000!!!111
I guess he has to do something to drum up money to defend himself as the Siegelman shizzola hits the fan.
Pathetic.
Well I am disappointed. After all I signed that damn complaint 24,632 times. /s
Jane’s stopping McCampaign.
jump around!
Woohoo!!!
rofl, gud 1 ;)
26,000!!!! Holy crap, Jane. You’re a dynamo!
Jane, can you get McCain to divulge his medical records too? LOL I bet you can!
I beg to differ.
This is not just any law, not just a law he helped to pass, not just a law with his name on it, but a law where John McCain gets top billing over Russ Feingold.
This is not garden variety hypocrisy. Rightwing websites are full of that. This is hypocrisy on an epic scale. Instapundit, the folks at RedState, and the BushCo minions at DOJ can only dream of such hypocrisy.
To smack down the very law that bears your name, the law that you pushed to repair your reputation as a member of the Keating Five . . . that’s not garden variety. That’s national monument variety — and the folks on K Street are ready to build that monument today.
I’m shocked!
But its the rightwing thing to do.
I wonder if there’s video available of that 2003 speech? I’m sure CSpan has it.
O/T:
I’d like to call everyone’s attention to a fine but somewhat lengthy essay in the New Yorker on the future of news media, “The News Business: Out of Print, The death and life of the American newspaper,” by Eric Alterman March 31, 2008. H/t to NewsTrust for drawing this article to my attention.
The article starts out with a brief obituary of the terminally-ill dead tree printed news industry, credits HuffPo for setting the business model for internet news aggregators.
It is well worth your time to read this (IMHO, YMMV, etc.)
Bob in HI
T
KKKarl Rove on C-SPAN discussing candidates, mostly his analysis of the Democratic candidates.
one of the things that makes this so tasty!
OT Shields and Brooks on the NewsHour continued their McCain lovefest. Shields is still the dazed nincompoop snd Brooks the tireless purveyor of Republican talking points and backhanded jabs.
This might help you.
He spent twenty minutes mocking the Democrats
well, he hasn’t stopped
Does Shields think this is the good liberal thing to do? The guy is a Republican wannabe. The News Hour needs to hear from their viewers. We need true opposites.
Now Karl Rove is hitting Obama really hard. He’s the attack dog and Obama is his raw meat.
Thanks! that’s a great resource. Unfortunately, it appears that St. John’s remarks on McCain-Feingold were not made in front of CSpan’s cameras.
Exactly. Brutal degrading of Democrats which is Rove’s type of analysis.
I love it
another interruption!
Great initiative and loved the video. One typo – “flout” not “flaut”.
A protester just shouted at KKK.
Karl’s pants are on fire ignited by his
lyingmisspeaking.Arrest him for disregarding the subpoena.
To the chamber pots!
It just goes to show how in the pocket of the Republicans the MSM including NPR and PBS are. As for the NewsHour, I think it is largely a reflection of Jim Lehrer whose principal philosophy is the Beltway or no way.
KKK is talking about OBL tapes…. What? You’re creating policy on that ridiculous trickery???
Somebody needs to challenge the truth about the stupid “tapes” of “OBL” that the Admin. keeps “releasing” whenever convenient. I’m really sick of this crappola. Call their bluff. It is all a Big Lie.
Karl is self-revealing. Clearly Hillary he’s not afraid of but he is scared of Obama. MSM and Fox come off like nice guys showing Rev Wright snippets compared to Karl’s vitriol.
They might have a cot that fits him somewhere in Congress with a cute little pot next to it.
Your thermometer graphic needs to be redrawn, Jane. It said ”25,850” or thereabouts.
Good job on this, by the way. Even if McCain skates on this, which he almost certainly will given how things work these days, he’ll have a bit of egg on his face. ”Mr. Straight Talk” won’t work by his own rules.
He’s not talking to these audience there, he’s really talking to the CSPAN audience. He’s campaigning
Your “self-revealing” perception is really a good way to look at all of these things. Sooner or later they get all puffed-up and drop a load.
For McCain.
Yeah, let’s put our whole military all over the planet just for the hell of it Karl, so we can all say, “Hey, that’s fine with me. As long as they’re not dying or getting hurt what do we care!”.
Gawd I despise this man.
SVG of McCain’s Head. Print it large, cut it out, use it as a stencil and throw shit at it!
Wealthy white men are. LOL
You bet he’s campaigning but C-SPAN and greatly increased giving the lion’s share of presentations to the American Enterprise Institute. It’s so exaggerated that it’s in your face.
McLame is obviously in Rove’s pocket…what a loser. McLame can’t think for himself. D’Oh…
Besides, he’s “technically” and “legally”…broke.
Go Jane!
Staying in Iraq forever will make the Middle East happy? Oh yes, having an American presence (even in the form of nuclear bombs in Israel) in the Middle East will make them love us eventually! Spit.
He’s attacking Obama now….and he just attacked Chris Matthews!!! Woooot!!!
Oh wow. Rove just spilled the beans….Chris Matthews is a right winger.
707
well, they did have a conference this week. Now the question is, will CSPAN cover EschaCon tomorrow?
Another one bites the dust, Hey!
Bush Aide Resigns for Alleged Wrongdoing
Oh. I thought he went after Matthews…I’m sure I misheard…dagnabit. *g*
Did George Bush ever have a record prior to 9/11 as uniting the country? Nope! If there was no 9/11, there would have been no 2nd term for George Bush. His experience as a Governor was not enough…ohhhhhhh….but his Daddy and his friends were.
Rove, you have no idea how “wound up” we are about you….Siegelman is really, really wound up.
He did. He said that Chris Matthews took the Democrat’s side and this was an unusual move.
Was there more to it that I missed? I’ve got a hyper dog in the room barking right now! LOL
He’s kissing himself…how does he do that…
When Bushie was in Reno there were mighty protests he hid from. Karl has no idea how Republicans re-registered and Independents came out to vote for Obama. I was shocked. The Repugs primaries were disorganized and not much of a showing. The Dems had a good time. The Repugs were sour.
Thanks. I thought I was hallucinating.
He’s all over the place.
How dare you, you little snivvling, sorry excuse for a person, discuss the grief of families who have lost their loved ones..oh, yeah, he just said “they volunteered” and “went into harm’s way”….
Arrest him.
“going into harm’s way”
Forker.
“sent into harm’s way”….pr*ck.
Damn, I hate this cynical use of the dead to portray W. as burdened and heroic.
I will now STFU.
Jane,
That’s great news and Good on you. We need more direct action.
We need you in front of some cameras doing a NEWS CONFERENCE in front of the FEC.
Shame them into action.
Get on the Teevee!
“We were led to the conclusion” that he (Saddam) had WMD’s because he wanted us to think that he had them.
Well, then you are all really stuuuuupid.
Karl Rove certainly has his own version of history, he conveniently forgets the facts.
What was Karl’s excuse for not serving in Vietnam? Was he using “student deferrment”? Or was he the one with the pimples excuse?
I’m fascinated.
Didn’t he have a gigantic pimple on his butt..I swear I read that….cellulitis on his “cheek” or something…
Pimple butt.
I think Limpballs is Mr. Asspimple.
The questioners all look like baby Karls!
My reason for not serving in vietnam is because I am a pacifist and it was an unjust war. I received an education deferment and then my lottery number didn’t come up. The only lottery I won. Had it come up I would be a Canadian or something else by now. But I am consistent. I oppose war. I’m with Pete Seeger on that.
Watching Rove reminds me of something I can’t seem to keep in my thick head and that is that intelligence and morality seem to have nothing to do with one another.
In the fall when the campaign is between Obama and McCain will the MSM report about Obama’s failure to limit campaign fund money or McCain’s breaking the law? We all know the answer.
Oh, yeah, you’re right.
I still think he’s a pimple butt.
Ted Bundy was also very bright.
Well. Yeah. ;)
Limpballs/Rover…one and the same…different suit.
Shudder..so was Manson.
He’s attacking Hightower now…
John McCain is dangerous
Alarming to see these young people falling for the koolaid.
It’s interesting how the soul physically manifests itself.
Very dangerous.
“If you do a mistake on the VP it lasts for days and days and days…if you do the right thing it only lasts a day…” Hmmmmm….cough…
He just dropped “Mitt Romney”….as VP..
I would call this the Repugs’ official Swift Boat launch against Obama. Well, Karl. I’m ready for you.
nice distilling
John McCheney.
Rove is talking about all the good ideas their side has on health insurance. Um, haven’t they had eight years to accomplish whatever they wanted to? Six with a rubber stamp congress? Does anybody believe this man?
What Repug do I know who follows blindly and covers for all the
liesmisspeaks of her boss? I think that person is a good choice as a McCain running mate. If, I step out of my value zone and endure the Repug valueless zone for a moment (body and soul goes into shock if longer), I come up with Rrrrrrice. We need a really good picture of McLame hugging Karl Rove…he’s allover all of the McBush talking points…
He’s McBush’s new man without a doubt.
The ad saying…”OBL determined to attack the US”…running over and over…makes her a no starter…
I say Romney. Rove just invoked Romney…saying the VP needs to be “mature”…
Oh, yeah…that could be Cheney though.
That was painful, but necessary. The things we have to do to restore the country.
It’s time for me to turn off the TV and turn on some tunes.
hmmm, more connections? read the update at bottom..

Don’t you all feel safer?

Citizen QuakerGirl:
“I think that person is a good chance as a McCain running mate…”
Are you sure you haven’t Described Hillary Clinton-McCain? If it ain’t Joe Lu*uderman then I wouldn’t be surprised ta see the “bi-partisan” Senator from New York on the fascist ticket if the Democratic Party doesn’t cave in to her extortion.
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNITION,AND HOLD YER FIRE WHILE THEY SORT THEMSELVES OUT!!
Yes, less likely to chip a tooth.
Fox News viewers love Karl Rove. They anticipate his every word with bated breath.
Ouch! I’m afraid to read that…
What???
eureka at 52–
i like to keep an eye on them all……a little hobby of mine.
felipe sixto had no political contributions, strange for such a high position.
but, this guy has me interested-
”White House spokesman Scott Stanzel said on Friday.
The matter has been turned over to the Justice Department for investigation, Stanzel said. He said Bush was briefed on the case and felt that the approriate action was being taken.”
worked for microsoft. then bush.
http://www.newsmeat.com/fec/by…..irst=scott
omg
this next site is rich with info–is he microsoft or is he memorex? he is listed on above link as senior products manager, but in this article, he is public relations in seattle, yet he was in washington, dc for a couple of years. then into bush’s white house.
this is his family blog=he’s writing his thoughts, and it’s interesting. in a repub kind of way.
i like observing other species. this is rare, and very revealing in all kinds of ways.
kinda feel sorry for his naivete being wasted on repub thinking.

Washington, D.C. – An Iowa native was named deputy White House press secretary today, and will be a spokesman for President Bush on issues dealing with homeland security, education and agriculture.
Scott Stanzel, 33, a 1995 graduate of Iowa State University, will become one of the highest-ranking Iowans in the Bush administration.
“It’s an opportunity in the final two years of President Bush’s
administration to really work hard to communicate his vision, and what he’s trying to accomplish,” said Stanzel, currently working in public relations for Microsoft Corp. in Seattle.
Stanzel, who grew up on a Sac City farm, got his start in Republican politics working for former Sen. Robert Dole’s presidential campaign through the 1996 Iowa caucuses. more
i don’t think mccain actually made the statement from the senate floor – looks like it was inserted into the congressional record by mccain (if so, it’s still his statement – but a written one, NOT a spoken one).
we gone through this in several threads, (for example, here and here). if someone could get this info to jane, i’d be grateful. it would be a shame to have the effort in anyway undermined by getting the story wrong.
Eeek!
and i don’t know if anyone has noticed this, but it looks like mccain has a jug of koolaid in his hands, ready to pour it on the ’pork’…………
in the photo up top.
Nipple rings can be scary.
Ahem!
;~P
I noticed in the last few weeks that several people have expressed their opinions about former NYS Governor Eliot Spitzer. I even read a ton of stuff on selective prosecution. I was frustrated when I read it all, but figured NYS politics is inside baseball and I am not a regular blogger, (altho I like to read what America is blogging), so I kept out. Eliot Spitzer was not a good governor. He could not build consensus, which is essential to governing. Importantly, Eliot Spitzer was not a progressive Governor. He vehemently opposed a tax on millionaires that would have helped to fund health care and edcuation — most millionaires wouldn’t have even noticed the tax. Eliot Spitzer and his family are millionaires many times over, real estate moguls. I could care less about his sexual escapades. He was also a mean-spirited prosecutor and executive. See this link. I know it will be difficult for those outside of the Albany NY drama to catch on to all of it — but the nasty parts about scapegoating his communications director and visciously going after the Senate Majority leader and then covering it up may be clear. I enter this only because I can no longer stand reading about how others were out to get Governor Spitzer. If they were, he gave them good reason. I am sorry I will not have time to participate in further discussion. You all seem like a lively and educated bunch with healthy curiousity. Understand what really happened here in NY. It’s dirty stuff. Do some investigating. http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/dailypolitics/
Ok, but isn’t the point that this whole hooker sting/joke is a political hit and that is what is were the ‘facts’ are?
opps were=where :)
