Digby spotlighted an article from Naomi Klein and Jeremy Scahill yesterday that deserves a much, much wider read. Digby concludes her piece thusly:
The netroots chose not to do that and it seems to me we are way too invested in our chosen candidates to try to leverage our support now. But Klein and Scahill, both very fine writers and thinkers, believe it's still possible for the anti-war movement to affect how these candidates deal with Iraq and if that's the case then it may be worth a try. We've got an eternity before the next primary and just about every insult has been hurled and every paean has been written. Perhaps we could set aside our differences long enough to try to encourage our congresspeople to sign on to The Responsible Plan and make sure the Democratic presidential candidates don't waffle on Iraq when the heat is on?
I've written this before and I'm sure I'll do it again:
President Franklin Roosevelt recognized that his ability to push New Deal legislation through Congress depended on the pressure generated by protesters. He once told a group of activists who sought his support for legislation, "You've convinced me. Now go out and make me do it."
We don't help our cause or our candidates by failing to "make them do it." It's our end of the deal.
I'm with Digby. The squabbling and petty personal crap has got to stop. From top to bottom, it has to stop, especially from the campaigns.
Sometimes, a reminder of why I got more politically involved can help me through a rough patch when I'm sick and tired of all the crap. It is worth a pause to contemplate why the continued work on certain issues must be done, for ourselves and every generation that follows. What the craven, self-serving set wants is disharmony and discontent, because that serves their KStreet/consultant/ego/crony perpetuation. I'll be damned if I'm going to help them keep that going, and none of you should do so either. So take a moment this morning and think about what matters to you politically -- and why working on it is so important to you. If you feel like it, share your thoughts in the comments -- you might inspire someone else who needs it.
Also worth contemplating is how to keep that interest going with folks who are just now beginning to pay attention -- how do we encourage active participation in government among the young, the exhausted and the apathetic? No easy answers there.
But right now, we are throwing away our own voices to a discordant cacophony over...what? And the issues which get right to the heart of who we are, who we ought to be, and where we ought to be going get shuffled under -- which only helps the presidential and congressional candidates ignore them as they continue to barrel down the campaign highway full speed. We talk endlessly about how disappointed we are in our political leadership, how they have failed us by failing to lead when we most need them to do so...when what we need to do is turn that question right back at ourselves.
One very hopeful sign this year has been the enormous surge of participation of younger voters -- with voters turning out in record numbers in Democratic primaries nationwide. What this could mean, if it translates into votes in the fall, is an opportunity for substantial change from the local to the state up through the federal races. Meaning an enormous opportunity to put progressive, thoughtful people in office to begin the desperately needed work.
But only if we put the issues that matter to all of us ahead of the silly squabbles.
What we should give the Beltway? A united front. An unbending demand for something better. And a wholesale push for the hard work to be done. We should settle for nothing less -- because we deserve better than we have been getting -- and giving -- for the last few years. And we bear responsibility for that as much as anyone else. We must demand better, from ourselves and from the people we elect...or we will never get it.

STRUGGLE
sew?
Morning all — after a run out to renew my car license tags in the pouring rain this morning, I’m ready to settle in with a fresh cuppa tea and some conversation. How is everyone?
I’ve got huddled, dripping birdies on the feeder, and a very contented cat purring at them nearby.
The field of candidates for president reminds me of the John Glenn quip about sitting on a rocket booster built by the lowest bidder. How did it shake out to this sorry lot? The lock on the political process the two-party has should be broken. Quay-hi!
The “squabbling and petty crap,” is generated almost 100 percent by Clinton and her triangulating supporters.
Clinton needs to drop out of the race. She may not realize it but if she continues like that, she and her husband will destroy the democratic party. She cannot win the election because the only way she can win the nomination is a back-room “Super-delegate” deal, and if that happens, all the new, young voters Obama has attracted are going to say “Meet the new boss, same as the old boss,” and stay home.
I’m an old fart and if that happens, *I’m* staying home. I’m tired of the triangulating Clintons, feeding at the same trough of Saudi oil that the Bush criminal empire has been doing for the better part of 100 years. Time to end the dynasties.
we have sunshine and 40 degrees…good morning…i want a dem nominee already
Good Morning everyone….
the weather folks keep saying that we might hit 90 this week. My easter lily is blooming like crazy…. 10 years in a row of blooming at easter… how does it know?
Morning, Christy. That sounds comfortable. You’re a jewel. Stay well.
Corporate media is the main player in fueling the non-issue related nastiness. Unfortunatley the Clinton’s seem to be too comfortable with this dynamic.
Real change, whether in Iraq or Health care or economic will be sabotaged by corporate media at every crossroads.
It’s a huge uphill struggle but there is no alternative.
was just reading at Kos,that Sen. Clinton took much credit for the family leave act, when it was Chris Dodd who actually did the deed
Oh Christy, Beautifully put.
Things are just so tense and I know it just helps Bush Co and the other Rats when we fight among ourselves, so I’m going to spend the next couple of hours with my kids, because THAT is why I fight and what it is all about and for..
CHS:
Sort of an action alert in connection with yesterday’s McCain posting.
Here is a Washington Post editorial today about the FEC “stalemate”, “Scandal in the Making“.
Is the “scandal” John McCain’s? Well, no, of course. Here’s what they say about him:
Demand better. Do better. Has a lovely ring to it, Christy.
Wonderful post. Y’know yesterday on CNN I saw Obama start to give an answer in Greensboro to a woman’s question on home healthcare for seniors and those with disabilities…only to have CNN cut away to their anchor of the hour to start parsing what he’d said earlier on the Wright thing. Talk about a wasted moment by CNN.
And I vented here about it. But I didn’t pay it forward as I should have by contacting CNN. My bad. Especially because that question spoke so directly to issues our own family is facing.
Matt Taibbi had some great comments this a.m. on Imus about the pack mentality of the media and what drives it. One way we can start to impact that is to keep thanking them when they’re good and criticizing–constructively–when they are not.
He has a book coming out that got a mention, and I have no clue if it’s at all relevant to Salon, but I think he’d be a fascinating guest worth considering.
Hi Christy. We just need to keep asking them about the issues that matter. When the train stops in your town, ask them. Ignore media outlets that are focusing on trivia. Ignore the surrogates. Resist the temptation to weigh in on each charge or countercharge. It’s easier said than done, I know, but I think it’s the best way out of the feedback loop.
Lets bring back government regulation because the GOP is against it. Because I want to buy cat food without worrying what the Chinese put in it. I want meat inspectors to keep downer cows out of my hamburger! I want our solders in Iraq to have helmets with enough Kevlar threads!
I want our government to act like they have a plan. Besides Caveat Emptor and lets get rich off of the Tax Payers money!
Digby makes a great point and I’m reminded of the very positive effect that Edwards had on the campaign. He clearly moved the frame of reference to the left on serious policy issues. Obama and Hillary are vapor-locked right now and not painting the serious disaster a McSame presidency would be for this country. Each of them knows that they will get the lefty vote so they have no reason to speak to us directly. We need to keep reminding them that we are here and we won’t tolerate Broder-like pandering to the right wing.
Good Morning Christy and Firedogs -
Christy - The Responsible Plan - signed on by Major General Paul Eaton (Ret) - he was at the Take Back America conference - did you meet him or hear him speak ?
yesterday the farmer next door told me he would have to sellhis cattle about 150 head…i was so sad…just knew he voted for booooshie/chimp…HE BELIEVED all the media liesabout little chimp…sad for HIM…sad for ALL of us…F-U corporate media

your kitty isn’t watching the Animal Planet
I’ve been thinking back to that video clip I posted what seems like eons ago with John Edwards and the fellow in Virginia, James Lowe, who finally got an operation for his cleft pallette after being silent for 50 years. We must do better. For all our sakes…
The Saturday after the FISA vote in the house I told my AZ Congressman Harry Mitchell personally that I appreciated his vote to keep my 4th amendment right….
In Costco….. Mitchell was pushing the shopping cart with his wife at his side…. Trying not to intrude on their time….. I did a thumbs up and said FISA, he nodded and we went on with our shopping.
Good morning Christy and thanks for a great post. Needed sayin. I’ve had enough of the shit to last for 3 or 4 election cycles.
CHS and other firepups,
Before emptywheel and firedoglake I felt alone in the red wilderness with no one listening. This community gives me hope and drives me to actions such as confronting my Senator Grassley with the Bear Stearns ripoff yesterday in person… and demanding action.
Together we are a potent force, divided we feed the KKKarl Rovian mission to marginalize our power.
Strong Progressive Caucus!
He wasn’t there that I saw, but they had some video of him talking about the plan from a pre-taped interview that I think is available on YouTube if you do a search?
Good morning CHS Yep read that article and was impressed with the thinking. They are right once the “campaign” is over we are all but chaff. Of course a decent, sensible debate between the candidates instead of the silly MSM crap would be of enormous benefit. Maybe some of the issues that we care about could be discussed instead of the regular pablum questions and sound bite answers.
FWIW, our moran dear leader Chimpy is flapping his gums live on CSPAN1
my BIG kitty Harry…loves the song..animail,animail,hot diggity dog its animail! ‘G”
It’s obvious based on what’s left that neither Obama or Clinton are going to go into the convention with the votes to win. Obama will be leading with popular vote delegates, but not by much. This we can reasonably assume.
Hillary will continue to write the GOP talking points for November.
Obama will get more and more negative.
I think it’s time for the Superdelegates to settle this before the party tears itself apart to the great benefit of the GOP.
Boxturtle (Because that’s what’s going to happen anyway, lets get it over with)
BRAVO sir!
In my entry yesterday in a contest to be at a small dinner with Obama, I said that for the past several years, saving the country and the world has been my second job, and that was only half in jest.
That’s why I fight. None of us are Superman, but maybe together we can be.
I love that. Thanks!
Speakin’ of Animal Planet…ever seen those oceanic shows, where the swarm of small fish all move together in one teeming mass and outwit the predators? Netroots are the teeming mass of small fish….we do best when we work together.
You confronted Grassley in person about the Bear Stearns bailout? Great work, Jim!
Good morning.
I ain’t awake yet but I finally won the struggle to get this story DUGG.
McClatchy had proposed a Super Delegate convention after all the primaries…. get them in the same room, have each candidate make their pitch on WHY they should be the nominee and then have them vote in June… then we can be focused to take down McBush…

Christy, I have always been impressed with your clear thinking and ability to cut to the chase. This is one of the reasons I read and support this blog every day. Excellent article, thank you.
And a second player is the tension between old school machine politics and the emerging netroots/populist politics. Old school is very comfortable with broadcast media; they cut their teeth on it, are comfortable with pushing their viewpoints.
But the “new school” is rediscovering the need for human interaction and communication in politics; this was the source of union’s power way back in the earliest days of labor organization as they met over kitchen tables. We aren’t meeting over kitchen tables alone, any longer; we are meeting over our laptops on blogs like this one, person to person, group to group. It’s organic and often unpredictable, making the old school very uncomfortable.
We need to recognize that some of the tension we see is reflective of this generational shift, not unlike the middle-aged parent and the teenager butting heads. The teen-ager is now become adult and a mature entity in its own right and the parent must now let go. It’s important that we as the newly matured entity in this scenario figure out how to inform the oldsters that we’ve arrived and we still love them anyhow if we’re going to remain a family going forward.
i speak up,at 1)the produce dept,2) gas pump, and 3) milk dept of grocery store…people have lots to say
Small issues at http://youthinkleft.com/ last year we got into a big argument about abortion and I got my but kicked a few times because I hadn’t thought about those issues since I was in high school and junior college.
Abortion, Gun Control, NAFTA, etc there are a lot of small issues that I know I haven’t thought about because I’m so focused on Bush the War and the economy.
But if we win in November well then just what do we want and why?
We NEED TO PLAN
Well, credit where credit is due, Digby was my catalyst on this one. That Roosevelt quote is a keeper…
Knock Knock.
who’s there/
CandyGram For George Bush………
i saw the 2 part series on Frontline…there are NO more lies…period
Look at the recent updates of Icasualties.org and listen to this callow and rotten man, Bush, brag about how great a success his Iraq fiasco has turned out.
He’s fvcking nuts.

I have been following this closely and I have a question. When Hillary announced that she is throwing the kitchen sink at Obama and has proceeded to do so, what should he do?
He took the highroad on Rev Wright, He has spoken on policy . All the media wants is scandal and Hillary is using this to her advantage.
In this day and age what should he have done? Saying nothing isnt an option.
Someone say plan?
It seems to me that the big issues facing the nation have to do with our economy. The post from Robert Johnson discussed the potential disasters we face if the financial people that got us into this mess are allowed to fix it. We really don’t have much choice, because as a group, the left doesn’t have many people with a good reputation in the financial community, the kind that could propose the necessary changes with authority and force.
The problem is compounded by the business background of most judges, which means that enforcement of financial laws, both criminal and civil, are handicapped.
Years ago, I did securities law enforcement, and I knew some of this stuff. I am trying to teach myself the current situation, and I am learning that business reporting is a cut above political reporting.
I think we need to focus the attention of our legislators on civil enforcement rules that have been gutted by courts. There is nothing like watching the likes of Angelo Mozillo walk off with millions and millions of dollars while the shareholders and mortgagees and mortgage holders all lose money to remind people that jail has a real deterrent effect on white collar criminals.
Absolutely, Rayne — it certainly makes a number of the Beltway Brahmins supremely uncomfortable. Especially when you are discussing with them why what they are doing is not working well… *g*
Gotta git it done fer the kids, fer the next seven generations!
I’ll only be concerned if the superdelegates don’t end it in June. Another month and a half of the back-and-forth isn’t good, but the engagement of primary voters and building campaign infrastructure and volunteer base in the remaining primary states is, so I think at worst it’s a wash. But once the primaries are over, the supers are idiots if they don’t declare and effectively end this. I hope they’re not idiots, but that remains to be seen.
It helped that I had a quote supplied by the progressive blogosphere where He and Baucus(D- Montana) had sent a letter to Treasury Sec Paulson and the other principals wanting to know the implcations of the 29:1 buyout for taxpayers. I used his own words to spur action and will followup with an e-mail this AM.
The synergy of the blogs gives each one more power. Together, we win. Keeping together may be a rocky road from time to time, but we must always be mindful of the direction we want to go.
I don’t think we can wait until after the primaries. The progressive blogosphere is eating itself and Hillary and Obama are eating each other. I have no hope that Hillary will take the high road in her campaign ads and Obama is going to start responding harder than he is now. Not good.
I’d like to see the supers declare BEFORE the Penn primary. And stick with what they declare. And change the rules for next election to eliminate them and go by popular vote or such.
Boxturtle (I’d also like a brand new Cessna 182, but that ain’t happening either)
Funny, that. Chimpy may be flapping his gums on CSPAN1, but CNBC hasn’t flipped away.
Apparently the wealthy class don’t need him.
Posted comment and link to Washington Post FEC editorial, but it didn’t show up.
hmm Obama more negative? Examples of present negatives that will get worse?
In order to move the party where we would like it to be necessitates that the party be unified and strong. Right now, we are just exposing our juggular to the repugs and it churns my stomach given that this constant silliness is going to ensure that none of what we want to get done gets done.
chimp- “iraqi muthas want their children to grow up in peace just as amurikan muthas do”
funny that. just now heard a young senator from Illinois on the teevee talking about it, equally important he sounded as if he was speaking to adults and not fearful nine year olds - wonder how that’s working out for him *g*
Sign up for the new DNC neighborhood-leader program when it rolls out in your state. It’s gonna be cool.
exactly
Look at the donors who are questioning Pelosi, They are not us. They are all multi-millionaires and a good number of them slept in the Lincoln bedroom.
Obama isnt Washington and he is going up against the head of the Dem party. It is to our credit that he is doing so well.
I don’t necessarily have a big problem with this, but here are my questions.
If April , May and June are too late to have contested primaries, why were these imporatnat state primaries scheduled then?
If August is too late to select a nominee, why was the convention scheduled then?
I don’t think there is an easy answer on that one, either. It’s tough to know in this incredibly supercharged and personal environment how any note you try to sound is going to hit people. Things that I never thought would be the least bit problematic have rung sour from both candidates, and things that I have found utterly jarring don’t even register at times — all the way through this primary from way back in November/December of last year.
It’s a really difficult situation, and one that I think the Obama camp is being cautious about — but how can you know whether, ultimately, caution is the right move? I thought Edwards was being too cautious in his responses any number of times, and that ended up not serving him in the end. But what the Clinton camp is doing isn’t exactly helpful either, now is it?
What BT said yesterday about not screwing with the Democratic/liberal brand ought to be Dem nominee 101. Yet here we are…and I’ve had just about enough from all sides, including especially the media and their fawning McCain coverage.
someone said yesterday, that if this were an election and the numbers were as they are, it would have been called by now.
Hillary cant win by the numbers. The rest of the primaries dont matter.
What it boils down to (imo) is that some people are never satisfied, no matter what it is you do or say.
Anyway, the gist is they predictably avoid one dimension of the “Scandal in the Making.” Here’s all they have to say about McCain:
It begs Letters to the Editor.
Good Morning.
The irony is that the policy differences between Obama and Clinton are relatively slight - hence the lack of substantive talk about issues to differentiate between the two of them but rather discussion of who would fare better against John McCain and simultaneous efforts to make sure that one’s candidate is the correct answer, usually involving trying to make the other candidate do worse.
What a waste of time.
I think knowing what we stand for, and why either Obama or Clinton would be light years ahead of McCain in supporting our ideals is key - and, of course, the willingness to hold feet to the fire to make sure they do what they ought to.
yup
Any religious reference is bad in my opinion. Those of us who are atheists are offended by continued bandying about of religious symbolism.
Hi Redd–
That was a breath of fresh air. I too am sick of all the shit from the candidates and their supporters. As long as it continues, I will stay uninvolved in both campaigns.
General Odierno flew over Baghdad last month and saw 180 soccer games going on!

The thing is, she’s trying to use it to her advantage, but it isn’t really working. The high road does seem to have countered it pretty well; it hurt him a little, but we don’t even know yet if that’s permanent or just a blip.
Attacks always raise your own negatives; you only do them if you think they’ll raise your opponent’s negatives more. From some of the polling I saw on Countdown last night, the Clinton attacks haven’t done that to Obama, and since her negatives are already higher than his, it would be harder for that calculus to work. The most important thing if you’re ahead is not to undermine your own positive message.
The Obama campaign doesn’t always do what I think they should, but based on the results, they really seem to know what they’re doing. (No Mark Penns on this side.)
The soccer surge is working!!!1!
and no shades of gray evah…its either good or bad…ends the disscussion lickety- split

Excellent post, Christy. Edwards was always my guy for many reasons, the way he constructively shaped the debate not being the least of them. I’ll vote for whichever Dem candidate, but deafeating McCain is the prize we’d all better keep focussed on.
The MSM wants McCain for President, it’s that simple. As mentioned so many times, we will fight the MSM’s careful crafting of St. John’s image throughout this campaign.
The networks trivialize our potential candidates by branding them as sniping & grasping for the nomination, while McCain is shown as gliding toward the Repub convention. Enough. If I had a dime for every email I’ve sent to CNN alone about this, I’d pay off my car loan tomorrow.
Off to work. Read you all later & good thoughts to all.
well said
That this man is where he is is amazing. He has won against the Clinton machine. I dont agree with him on everything but I appreciate how he has spoken and more still the campaign that raises money from so many of us.
We have to end the war just to show that we are competent and in charge! If we fail or even worse are betrayed by our own then noone will trust us to get anything else done. The DLC does not seem to understand that they think that they can just go along to get along.
Sure if we don’t win McCain or a DLC wolf in disguise will destroy the economy and keep losing the war in Iraq but being right is cold comfort when the warmongers come to the door after the election looking for cash to pay for the war.
Just where does the GOP business channels find economists who don’t understand that wars are an expense that will have to be paid for in the future is beyond me.
But suppose we do win WHAT IS NEXT?
Money.
(Isn’t that always the answer?)
Seriously — it’s about the money. Campaign finance rules allow a certain amount of it to be raised and spent for the primaries, and another certain amount to be raised and spent for the general election. The party bean counters reasoned that if the party can settle on a nominee early in the primary season, then all that “primary” money can be spent on attacking the other side. The “general” money can then be hoarded and spent in one big blitz at the end of the election cycle (Sept-Oct).
No one could have anticipated, however, that there’d be two major candidates fighting for that nomination all the way into April or even beyond.
he would be a good start imo….seems to be an open minded individual
How did he know those soccer games weren’t the Inter-AlQaeda Deathsquad Soccer Tournament?
Bush is back to yelling at us all again.
His new talking point appears to be that the Iraqi economy is doing much better than the US economy.

sadly no,

I don’t think it’s wise for him to make that comparison even if it is nuts. Some people might ask why.
Clusterfuck pulls down a 30% JAR from Fox- down two points from his previous shitty score.
Americans hate Clusterfuck.
And with whos money would that be?
rwcole, CHS:
Of course, it’s both sides. A pox on both houses.
Let’s examine the two campaigns’ reaction to the Wright controversy, for example:
1. Out of political necessity Obama responds with a speech that is sophisticated and effective, and often inspiring.
2. With the Tuzla Bamboozla story obscuring the fading Wright controversy, Clinton gives a personal interview to Scaife to resuscitate the story.
These things are not equivalent. Clinton is not a demon for using Scaife and Limbaugh, making “liberal” an epithet, endorsing McCain’s C-in-C credentials, etc., but you have to recognize her weak position has made the low road a rational choice. Meanwhile, she’s set a trap for herself with her “experience” schtick, having to improvise to invent said “experience”, which no one is buying, because by her own admission it’s the same “experience” in fucking things up that she thinks makes McCain C-in-C material.
Come one. They’re not both throwing kitchen sinks at this point.
That is my distillation, he didn’t actually make that comparison.
-G
. We really don’t have much choice, because as a group, the left doesn’t have many people with a good reputation in the financial community, the kind that could propose the necessary changes with authority and force.
Paul Krugman, John Keynes, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J.....Galbraith, anyone but Greenspan, Helicopter Ben, Milton Friedman’s Chicago School of Economics Zombie’s and or ANY Bush NeoCon.
But for one thing, our dependence on the oil. Since their is nothing going on to replace it, no meaningful development of replacement technology, No solar panels to provide electricity for the most likely solution, and electric car in every pot (sorry Franklin).
If it weren’t for our completely ignoring reality about the car we jump in, this conversation would be meaningful. But as a result of this “omission”, the arguments seem to fall a bit flat when it comes to supplying oil to a gas guzzling public. Since these two facts can’t be reconciled, it renders this argument moot because we have no replacement value for the equation. Do you have a train near by that you can use to locomote? There aren’t any in my part of the country.
Do you see where we are headed? No one seems to be able to adjust the argument to include a very likely future. Get in your car and you support a terrorist nation. There aren’t any more left that have oil that aren’t according to our government. That makes it so much easier to start a war that appears to be one of xenophobia, to disguise it for one of conquest and theft of resources.
And imagine, all the rage is about a fellow named Wright that tells it like it is. He goes as far as to explain why these countries dislike us. Instead of the fact of the matter, some nebulous idea about “patriotism” and “racism” are what comes from the conversation.
We are a silly lot collectively. We seem able to ignore reality as a culture. If we are to move forward, this must change. I would venture to guess it is either or, what about you?
Sometimes I get the feeling he’s trying to convince himself, too.
Sorry, but somewhat off topic.

“What we should give the Beltway? A united front. An unbending demand for something better.”
Too abstract. You need a policy wiki. Start new sections for policies, as you do for firedoglake, etc., on your banner, one for each issue,
- war in Iraq,
- health care amd medicare
- defence policy (what is the best level of investment in defence)?)
- foregin policy (Many section’s here)
- Labor policy, national & international
- Social Security
- and others.
Key to the wiki’s success is editors. Your contacts, editing is hard work, but it’s also a forum for the editor.
When do you want to start?
That frontline series was sickening.
my 12-year old just walked into the room and asked “so, has Obama gotten the nomination?”
I said “no, not yet, there are about 10 more primaries, and it’s getting nastier and nastier.”
He said “like always?”
I said “Yeah, like always.”
