I saw them in 2004, because I received an invitation to see the Fixx that evening. These guys opened, and by the second song, they got standing ovations. Every day I bump into a lot of folks from all walks of life. I rarely hear much about Obama, Clinton, McCain, Iraq, subprime mortgages, FISA, Ferraro/Wright or any of the other stuff the political class chatters about.
The thing virtually everyone is talking about is the price of gas. People are furious about it and it is cutting deeply into their discressionary spending. There seems to be one hell of a disconnect.

Yesterday I talked to a guy who delivers ice cream to groceries. He told me that sales are way down. He figures that to pay for gas people are cutting back on extras like ice cream.

Ya know, when I see Paul Thorn, I think it’s like when the faithful see a real evangelist. I’m as secular as it gets but music, even music of faith, when played with passion and true belief, is as close to a religious experience as it gets. Paul is the song of a Pentecostal preacher and his background comes through his music, even though hsi music is secular. When they break into “Mission Temple Fireworks Stand,” it’s like being at an old fashioned revival and when they play it you believe. For me, I believe in Paul and the band, and the power of their music to lift my spirits and make me whole.

Very few have ever had that effect on me but Like Pete Townshend, who seemed to have a laser eye into my soul as a kid, Paul Thorn seems to have it now.

The man has a gift and his band is so shit-hot, it hurts. So many more people should get hip to his music.

When I was on the Delbert Cruise back in January, a bunch of gals all dressed in polka dots and they let Paul know they’d be at his show. Well, when he did “Ain’t Love Strange,” when he got to the rapping part, they all clambered up on stage and did their version of “an interpretive dance, to this little groove I got goin” and of course they extended the groove for five minutes so all these gals could shake their groove thangs.

It was a slice, I promise you. The Delbert Cruise is always a pilgrimage and a chance to play music with the big shots (at the late-night jam) and I got to play with ol’ Delbert Himself. Now THAT was an experience.

What I *could* tell you is about the effects of extended sleep deprivation – and what it did to me several years ago. Shortest version possible – it cost me an incredibly lucrative law practice, lost 98% of my memory, and (happily) spent the next 6 years working at the family lumber yard.

Sleep deprivation is serious business – don’t mess with it, or think otherwise…

you are, of course, correct. and i am very sorry to that you have suffered so severely from it.

i don’t have an objection to just about anything short of a 2×4 up side the head to help me sleep. it’s just that i don’t want to mess with anything that could cause trouble from the other meds i take.

a couple of weeks ago i finally broke down and went to my dr. to ask for advice. basically, i got blown off. he told me that i was getting more sleep than i thought i was. it was only after leaving the office that i realized he thought i wasn’t including the drowsy bad sleep as sleep – which i was. moron (and i mean me – i should have been clearer). but it really pissed me off not to have my own doctor believe me – when i have never, ever exaggerated anything to him…. and i didn’t even bother him about the sleep thing until it had lasted well over 6 months.

I’m an RN and I also have sleep apnea, whuch I’m aware is different from what you are experiencinm’, but in the course of gettin’educated about my situation I learned a good deal about sleep disorders in general and I can’t encourage you enough to see a sleep specialist. No matter what the eitiology of yer problem don’t try and treat it yerself – it won’t go away withn jest good veggies and good vibs. No matter whether it’s neurological or cardio-pulmonary jest get it diagnosed and treated.

Dump that quack and go to a sleep specialist…my God there is a lotta bad medicine bein’ practiced and most of it is of the variety you experienced -that doctors won’t refer if they encounter somethin’ they can’t diagnose. Get rid of that guy and go to a good internal medicine person in addition to a sleep specialist.

Hell, i went to a doctor’s office for five years, and when they took my blood pressure, they’d say – “oh well, everybody’s nervous when they come into a doctor’s office…”

Well – *I* wasn’t – christ – a fuckin’ doctor’s office? Hell no I wasn’t nervous – I just had blood pressure at near-stroke levels – which two different doctors, for about five years, just blew off as “nervousness”. I’ve done jury trials for peoples’ lives – a fucking doctor’s office was making me nervous?

Get straight up with your doctor – don’t take any garbage – get in his/her face and get the thing fixed.

(Or get really, really drunk, heh)

go to a good internal medicine person in addition to a sleep specialist.

i have never had such trouble getting drs as here (in MA for crying out loud). completely different experience than when i lived in tx or ca – or my dad’s docs in il (mostly very, very good).

my last pcp doctor was so incompetent that i don’t even want to remember. the one i have now is much, much better (scary – huh?) but it i had to way 7 months from when i made the first appointment until saw the dr. for the first time and was officially a patient. and this was in the family med dept after 4 out of the 5 who were recommended to me where no longer taking new patients. i think internal med is not going to happen – although ever since i had hodgkin’s disease i had gone that route instead of family med.

i just don’t see that as an option unless i move. but i don’t mind looking for a sleep specialist on my own. and if need be, i’m sure my dr. would give me a referral (i don’t think my insurance requires it though) – so long as it wasn’t something that required much time (i think the problem is that they are seriously over worked here – no dr. no matter how good can sustain it, imo).

anybody got a request, musically, to close this thing out?

well, i just signed up for the hell of it – thought it would be fun to try out. will let you know what i think of it.

jesus, jayt that sucks. i’m sorry to hear that… hope your blood pressure is being controlled now.

the thing is, it’s not just me – i have horror stories from everyone i know here who’s had a serious illness. like i said – it’s nothing like the other places i’ve lived (where i’ve had multiple hospitalizations, treated for cancer, etc – so i had plenty of experience with various health care professionals)… this place is an outlier.

I spent two weeks curled into a fetal ball, with only a vague knowledge of who *I* was… luckily, I remembered, when they showed up, the faces of my family. During that two-week period, I lost almost all of my memory – today, I figure I’ve got about 97% of it back, but that’s still a loss.

For example, I can remember trials from years ago, the issues involved, how I argued it, and the outcome – but I have no memory whatsoever of the name or face of the person I was representing. Nor can I put any specific incident into the proper year – that is something I’m no longer capable of.

Serious business – get it fixed – please….

thanks jayt. i’ve been really lucky – the worse days i’ve gotten a tremor and kind of a funny feeling heart beat. and even with nothing like what you experienced – there are days i do get worried. and on sunday, one of my cousins basically said the same thing you are saying… he told me about someone he knew who had it so bad that she was unable to communicate or comprehend what was going on around her (i think he said she just rocked back and forth).

so, i’ve been warned… but in a way, hearing the really bad stories like yours jayt, makes part of me think “oh well, i don’t have it that bad, i shouldn’t complain” – but the other part of me is going to look up a sleep specialist.

One day you’re functioning and getting past it – and the next day……. we don’t wanna talk about the next day.

I thought I was the toughest SOB ever deposited on this planet (and to this day I tell myself that nobody else could have gone that long, self-righteous asshole that I am), but the fact remains that when I went down, it was within a matter of hours. What went down within those few hours would take a long time to tell – don’t feel like it right now.

What *does* matter is that you do something *Right Now* – either tell your regular doctor to fuck off and give you something that helps, or go somewhere else where they understand and will help you.

As doc Kirk said to me the other day – “Get thee to a doctory”.

You are a most valuable voice around here – not gonna stand around idly and lose you – this shit can kill you, or even worse, per Springsteen, “they wind up wounded, and not even dead.”

It’s time to get aggressive, m’dear.
