In fact, McCain’s only real “national security” credential is his extended stay at the Hanoi Hilton after the plane he was flying was shot down. And his record as a prisoner of war may have been aggravated by two character traits that are dangerous in a Commander in Chief – stubbornness and an explosive temper.

Could the incredibly harsh treatment McCain suffered as a POW – harsher than the treatment reported by his fellow POWs – have been his captors’ response to his being so stubborn that he refused to cooperate with anything that his captors directed him to do and to his losing that explosive temper repeatedly when he was being demeaned or insulted by his guards, his interrogators, or the warden of the prison camp?

Dubya has shown us only too clearly how dangerous it is for a president to be more stubborn than prudent. McCain’s support of the surge in Iraq and his insistence that we can stay there “for 100 years” if necessary probably reflects his deep-seated stubbornness (among other traits).

And the man who controls the orders to use strategic nuclear weapons, bunker buster nukes, or tactical nukes should not have an explosive temper.

For perspective:

No one connected with any campaign can attack McCain’s status as a “genuine war hero.” However, from the perspective of the Vietnamese civilians that he bombed in North Viet Nam, McCain’s record was criminal, not heroic. American pilots who were shot down in North Viet Nam were routinely beaten badly by peasants or other local residents who considered them war criminals. Sometimes when North Vietnamese officials could not reach the crash site, the pilots were reportedly beaten to death by enraged civilians.

McCain is not a war hero in the historic sense. We think of “war heroes” as soldiers who have exposed themselves to extraordinary personal risks in the heat of battle to aid their fellow soldiers. To the best of my knowledge, this is not what McCain did. McCain never came to the aid of fellow soldiers in the heat of battle nor did he inspire other fighters to fight on or survive by his leadership or example. What he did was to survive incredibly brutal physical beatings when he was a POW.

According to McCain, the beatings were administered because he resisted becoming an instrument of enemy propaganda. McCain’s account is that he was singled out for specially brutal treatment because he resisted more steadfastly than his fellow POWs; because he was willing to endure more physical punishment than most of the other captives. It certainly may be that McCain was more determined to refuse to participate in enemy propaganda than most of the other POWs, but could he have suffered some of the extra abuse because he was as much of an insolent a–hole toward the Vietnamese as he had sometimes been toward superiors at Annapolis?

The video clips we’ve been hearing on our televisions and radios of Rev. Wright’s comments come from a much larger sermon and have been taken way out of context. Shameful that the MSM has allowed it to go on for so long!
