ls at 139–”

>You are correct. Underpainting (in classical painting) establishes the tonal values…

======foundation

>I use a combination of classical techniques (because I’m addicted to old medium formulas) but I am very focused on texture and color and most of all breaking any rule my mind tries to tell me not to…

=====know the rules so that you can break them with clarity

so that can get really wild…I want to be surprised and allow the chaos and the subconscious to takeover..

===yeah

>until I get a reaction that is not a “word”…more likely a sound or an emotion. The hardest thing I ever did was to paint with “reds”

======red is emotional, so, is hard to do…..picking up on a ’word’ or a ’sound’ or ’emotion’ in the ’receiving’ mode is a quiet thing, red emotes, so, is harder to quell to express

>…Now, I love it, but I found that I had a problem with it initially years ago. Also, I used to buck any tendency to start “representing” something…now not so much.

=====any form of expression represents SOMETHING, finding or understanding your voice, and where it’s coming from probably got you over that.

(i’m assuming. in all of it, in a creative kinda way)

>I love Rothko and de Kooning.

=======nice.

hmmmmmmm, never can name favorites, never could, i’m rare, i know. they change.

email is proxima123 at frognet dot net

my best friend has a paper artist site that is outta this world, but can’t remember his name right now.

ls at 88-”It was incredible. I paint as well, and I tend to “intend” to stay within monotones sometimes when I start a painting (because I love minimalism), but when the “magic” happens when I’m painting…they all end up with strong colors and texture….funny how that happens…I’m not a minimalist I guess.”

ls-you’re doing a process that works for you that is similar to underpainting, another process…..

==========
and millenery manat 57–” I love color also, however I always seem to gravitate to black and white, and shades of gray if it presents itself as an option.”

—it was always pounded into my brain that white, grey/gray, and black ARE colors. and got corrected every time i said anything else.

and i was told that once you learn to paint with only black and white paint, then you know how to paint. then you go to color. it’s true.

so, you must have that ’down’.
