When I was in Chicago over Christmas, I went to a not for profit art gallery called Iraqi Art that a friend of mine told me about that sells paintings by Baghdad artists hit hard by the war. I wasn’t going there to buy the art necessarily, I was just going to check it out and to meet the gallery owner Charles Trimbach who has made this a life mission. I really didn’t know what to expect, but the art was so damned good that I ended up getting a painting that I absolutely love.
The “Journey” of how this gallery/project/labor of love came to be is quite fascinating. It stemmed from the plight of a Baghdad artist collective that had nowhere to show or sell their art. Three years later, this Chicago gallery is filled with fabulous paintings, (at unbelievably reasonable prices) that arrive rolled up in tubes, and then are stretched out at the gallery. Iraqi Art has a tri-fold mission:
“ A. Humanitarian-- To provide an income to the 40+ artists we support who live in Baghdad. They receive 65% of the sale of their paintings. The money is sent directly to the artist or their designated representative via Western Union.
B. Cultural exchange/ education-- To provide Americans with an alternative perspective of the Iraqi people and their culture than what is portrayed in the general media. We do this, not only through exhibitions at our Chicago gallery, as well as other venues across the country, but through lectures and speaking engagements at Universities, public institutions and public events.
C. Good will ambassadors-- To provide an alternative view of the American people to Iraqis. Iraqis need to know that there are many Americans who care deeply about their plight, and who want to help.”
As a non-profit organization, to keep operating Iraqi Art depends on alternative sources of funding such as grants, sponsorship, and private donations. This project needs our support, people. If you would like to buy some beautiful art or just sponsor a very worthy cause, please visit their website www.iraqi-art.com.

Donita!
Hi Donita!
The page is all screwball for me…Ads are covering the text.
Donita - Congrats on the CD - I’ve ordered it. I heard the review on NPR last week.
The format of this post is messed up, at least on my screen…
The “FDL ACTION,” “FROM THE BLOGS”, and “Tool Box” sections partly block out the test of the post.
Dell PC Internet Explorer
Half the post is obscured by the sign-up for rapid response.
Mods…Help!
:-))))))))))))))))))))))))))))!
Never mind.
try leaving and re-entry, worked for me
Not seeing it myself. Will check the art when I get home….
I refreshed and that problem went away
I think there was artwork before tho…
great art show, Donita, thank you.
Hi fini!
It’s hard to pick a favorite, but I think my favorite -at first glance- was number three
v nice
and in the neighborhood
kinda tight this month, but art is a prefered Mothers’ Day gift chez Mack
and right on the way to the Davis Street Fishmarket for us
Congratulations on getting some great art for your home, and on discovering that incredible gallery. Thanks for the terrific post!
Because of the hate mongering of the right wing this is an excellent reminder that Iraqi’s are frikkin’ people too!
They have been producing great art since before the time of Christ and I see they are still doing it with style.
Great post Donita.
Donita! Fini!
Gorgeous art. Thank you for showing us this.
:-))))))))))))))) Hi Donita! Hi Mista Fini, Hi Mista Thor, Hi guys…
These paintings are beautiful and strange. True! Wich one did you buy, Donita?… :-)))))))))))))))))))))
The opening picture seemed mosaic to me, even the second one.
Hi Everyone, crazy technical difficulties to get this beautiful art to you. Hang in there.
:-))))))))))))))))))))))!!!!!!
Great art show!
Hi Donita! Hope you are ok… Is the painting you’ve buy in the slideshow? :-)))))))))))))))))))
Do you live in Chi-town? It’s up on Sheridan Road.
Hi Cactus! No, the painting is not, but the artist is. It was a very tough choice for me. Guess which artist????
FDL frontpage + Photobucket = disaster. Sorry, the slideshow had to go away because it was trashing the frontpage for some damn reason. If you click the image or link right below it you can view the slideshow at Photobucket. Sorry for the weirdness everyone!
It’s ok fini…. weirdness is our middle name here at The Spin. thanks for trying!
Aloha, Donita and fini! The ‘War’ painting is depressing, the helicopters sum it up beautifully… What a travesty…! 8-(
Thanks, it just sucks is all. I really wanted the slideshow to work. The preview in the backend liared to me!
Oh, Ah! Ok…mmmmmh let see, Kauther?…
Hi Fini! Are you fine? You are not a myspace “addict”, are you? ;-)
It worked for me when I clicked on the picture, altho, it was cropped a tad…!
It works for me too, Mister Finitooo…
Good guess, but no.
Hi Donita, fine art, works fine for moi.
Here are my friends from The California Guitar trio, Playing Echoes in an art Gallery…

Enjoy. A bit shaky though.
Oops, that’s for #30, L Cactus7
Right Wingers, were they able to think, might notice that the women in the potrait are not wearing burquas. That might lead to other critical thought - perhaps that Iraqi people are a lot like us. Alas, Bill O’Reilly will never avail them of such knowledge. Billo may not be aware of it himself. Besides, Billo, John McCain, et al, are assh*les on a mission to teach the opposite.
Not really no, not on my personal space. I did get your friend request on iMeem though, I hope to spend some more time there soon, but have been really busy lately.
In response to Donita Sparks @ 0
Thanks for the link. I like the paintings by Basil Faisal best. The others are a little to abstract for my taste.
In response to Finifinito @ 26
Pages on FDL sure like to freeze IE for quite a time. I don’t get have this problem with FF or Opera.
In response to LCactus7 @ 93 (post from last week)
Darn daylight savings time. It starts here at a different date.
Actually in the US we started a few weeks early this year for one year only for…well some fuckin reason the Bush folks came up with out of their ass.
I understand why you had difficulty to choose one…Ok! I gotto confess I don’t know which one you choose, Donita…Tell us…please! :-)
Ok, it was what I thought… You are too smart then everybody needs you for their pc problems, eh guy? ;-)
Abby the kitty, isn’t it?…
Thanks for the link. I like the fourth one, the black and white untitled piece.
Happy Spring everyone. It’s a new year for seasons, stars and more and better Democrats.
We stars Spring with snow here in Belgium… Ha! A little crazy…
Lol. Not really.
There are more by that artist at the gallery website too.
http://iraqi-art.com/
tra-LA! It’s Spring.
I really liked almost every one, I’m a fool for color and I really really liked the color pallets.
I know, I like the colors too.
Oops sorry! I thought you was somebody else… And the same smart comments (wich I understand 1 on 2 ;-)
Donita,My Goddess!!!
I Wish I could give you a BIG hug right now!!!
Happy Easter!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well we may be getting a little snow here in NJ tomorrow also. The light has changed and it’s really beautiful.
Reply to Donita@47

Wow! I come back and all is well. What a beautiful slideshow.
Donita
thanks for turning us on to this. What an awesome mission statement this guy has. Someone should do a documentary on him.
Do you know if the work sells well? how’s the gallery doing?
-….mmmh, I guess we never gonna see your new painting, eh Donita? ;-)
-Fabi? Is that you?!…
I love color also, however I always seem to gravitate to black and white, and shades of gray if it presents itself as an option.
I saw my first daffodils today! well they were only buds but just ready to pop, the snow will only charge their exuberance.
emphasis on the better
Pierre!!!!!!!!!
yes,it’s me!!!
:)
I really enjoy the abstracts in that collection. There are some other works at that website that are fascinating as well.
I saw an installation at MOMA years ago, and the artist had done all of these amazing paintings in really subtle shades of white…very subtle appearance of shadows…it was really kewl.
Everybody wanna give hugs to the great Donita but if we all do this in the same time (Transmitication?) she will die!!! ;-P
I’m kidding, a Goddess can’t die…
The gallery is having a tough go of it and really just need the exposure. That’s why I wrote about it today, I heard they were having financial troubles. Try and make a donation if you can. I’m very glad that the readers here at FDL are enjoying the art.
sometimes on cloudy days, I try to name all the different grays I see in the sky
Yes girl, it’s me ;-)))! It’s cool to “see” you here Fabi… You look gorgeous 2night darling :-)!
Thanks for the link.
That must be a great show to see in person.
That’s cool…and deep…but don’t try this here in Belgium, buddy!
Awe…Thanks Pierre :)
No Young jess or Cassie today huh?
Must be spring break.
Lol.
My wisteria is beginning to bloom. It’s climbing quite well over a patio cover, and already looks and smells beautiful.
The daffodils have been up and blooming for a month out here.
why, too many clouds?
I can never name them all anyway.
HMM, twofer.
What do you name them?
(I try to find the artist who did the painting Donita have buy…help me Fabi!!…shhhhhhh!)
thankyou donita for the artwork , its areal insight to a peoples culture instead of the images the media want us to see, plus i love transmiticate
These kids today, off galavanting. How dare they?
That must’ve been great. I’ve seen some paintings in galleries that were along the same lines, with the shades of white. I use slighty different percentages of black to create a range of tones in some of the layout that I do. It makes some colors pop even more I think.
Yes sir, there is more clouds than sky in Belgium…
well there’s battleship gray, and tabby grays, moonshadow gray, pavement gray, wispy gray . . .
They Dare Dare, Honey! ;-)
They change so quickly on some days, I’ll have to try it sometime.
Well said, considering the state of some of the members of our party.
Don’t be upset but I thought you gave name like : Bob, Michelle, Alano (;-)
Thee hee! sorry…
lol!
It was incredible. I paint as well, and I tend to “intend” to stay within monotones sometimes when I start a painting (because I love minimalism), but when the “magic” happens when I’m painting…they all end up with strong colors and texture….funny how that happens…I’m not a minimalist I guess.
It is delightful to walk into a place — a concert, a restaurant, a gallery, anywhere — and get bowled over. What a collection of art!
Thanks, Donita!
Hear, hear!! I needed that. I hope they take off!!
I blame all that music that they’re listening to these days . . .
*g*
I also heard the NPR piece, Donita — good stuff!
Minimalism rules! A cactus brain like that a lllot…
Just try and name some.
OK, my guess: Basil Faisal.
The magic is in the process, at least for me. I love when the inspiration and spontaneity collide and I end up somewhere I never intended to go. I have term for it, muse on the loose. For a long time that was the name of my studio.
lol I agree!
Yeah!
Of course then again,I resemble the old joke that if you don’t believe in life after death, stand in the parking lot where I work at quitting time.
Thanks Peterr. I’m glad you enjoyed the art too.
Believe me or not but I thought that too…
Muse on the Loose!
LS, I like this idea of paintings in shades of white. I think I’ll try it with the kids. Got any photos?
Did you ever end up talking with him? What led him to this mission?
LOL…one time I came home from work and I had been
working on a reallyfighting with a challenging painting, and I was so obsessed with it, I walked in the door in my work clothes and starting painting…I completely forgot where I was, completely painted over the painting and reworked the whole thing, and finally…I was satisfied..loved it…and then…I looked down…and I was covered in oil paint…LOLI can’t find my reading glasses,I could’n go see the art yet,it’s hard to type as well:(
Don’t worry guy, I’m a “minimalist” but I don’t want to! ;-P
OT-Someone on Hardball is pissed about the passport issue because someone could use it to steal their identities. Good luck trying to pretend you’re any of these candidates, guy!
(I don’t believe that Hillary and McCain’s passports were “peeked at”.)
No. I wish I could remember the artist…I’ll try to research it..it was 15 years ago in NYC…If I find it, I’ll put it in comments when I see you. The colors were soooo…subtle, you weren’t sure if it was a shadow from the light of the room or whether it was painted a different color…it was abstract and geometric in large segments. One painting may have had a huge field of one white, and a smallish geometric corner in an ever so slightly different hue. Astounding.
Check under the table.
LOL
Ooooh my poor Fabi :-( Don’t worry you will see them another time and Donita is here :-))))))))))))))))))))))))))!
Gawd, I hate when that happens…*g*
Works for me. A very dear friend is very disciplined in her approach to her work, she sculpts and paints. We tried collaborating one day and we agreed never to do it again, our process are so different.
That’s what great about any form of expression, it’s unique to the person.
Yes I did. He said it fulfilled his goal to do something good and positive, and to be surrounded by creativity.
My guess is they peaked at Brittany Spears, Tom Cruise, and a bunch of others too
Was it just white with black, or was there a slight amount of color? I see it with mostly white with black, and letting the students choose one color to put a drop of in the white. Was there a theme?
Yes,I know she’s here…LOL but it’s hard to participate when you can see straight…:(
I just found that on the German Amazon site, the regular CD costs more than the signed version on Donita’s site for foreign customers.
It’s the only answer he’s got? (I’m kidding & don’t know the guy but I’m affraid to leave and miss a part!)
There you go. Sometimes you just have to go with it. It’s great feeling though when you fight through it and it works. Not so much when it doesn’t. At some point though I think intuition takes over when it’s meant to be.
My band’s CD will be available at the end of April.
Roots Rock and Blues. Americana, if you will.
Some of these pieces . . . You know that there’s a story behind them. I’d love to hear the artist’s tales as well.
Wow! Nancy Pelosi met with Dalai Lama! Cool.
Yes, and I think seeing them in person and feeling the emotion eminating from them would be quite an experience.
Good night everyone (7:32pm eastern time)
I’ve got a headache now :(
Happy Easter Beautiful Peaple!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
