A number of folks — notably Ezra Klein and Glenn Greenwald — have already pointed out quite adroitly that while the media have had little compunction about whipping up a phony controversy about Barack Obama’s "pastor problem", there’s almost nothing that white evangelical pastors can say that might bring down similar approbation. John McCain’s "spiritual advisers" Rod Parsley and John Hagee really are only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to this.
As Glenn puts it:
The phrases "anti-American" and "America-haters" are among the most barren and manipulative in our entire political lexicon, but whatever they happen to mean on any given day, they easily encompass people who believe that the U.S. deserved the 9/11 attacks, devastating hurricanes and the like. Yet when are people like Falwell, Robertson, Hagee, Inhofe and other white Christian radicals ever described as anti-American or America-hating extremists? Never — because white Christian evangelicals who tie themselves to the political Right are intrinsically patriotic.
But the Republican right’s biggest problem with having "America haters" as leading exponents of movement conservatism is someone who not only has claimed to be a spiritual mentor but is also a major financier of Republican causes: the Rev. Sun Myung Moon.
As John Gorenfeld explains in delightful and excruciating detail in his new book Bad Moon Rising: How Reverend Moon Created the Washington Times, Seduced the Religious Right and Built an American Kingdom [which we'll be discussing in greater detail tomorrow for the FDL Book Salon], Moon has a long history of saying ugly things about the United States and about Americans.
And yet simultaneously, the largesse he spreads about the conservative movement has won him all kinds of friends, influence, and defenders, if not followers. Certainly, there is no one in the mainstream media who bothers to mention this, let alone play endless tape loops.
Here are some of the things Moon has said over the years, as Gorenfeld has detailed:
The whole world is in my hand, and I will conquer and subjugate the world. I will go beyond the boundary of the U.S., opening up the toll gate, reaching out to the end of the world. I will go forward, piercing through everything …
When we are in our battle against the whole nation of the U.S. — if you are truly in love with this nation, and if you love this nation more than anyone else, this nation will come into God’s possession, and Satan will have nothing to do with it. … With that as the bullet, we can smash the whole world.
Individualism is what God hates most, and Satan likes best.
God likes the idea of a monarchy, because it removes the cycles of election after election which can obscure the focus and direction of the nation.
The whole world is in my hand, and I will conquer and subjugate the whole world.
The time will come when, without my seeking it, that my words must serve as law.
We will be able to amend laws, articles of constitution, if we wish to do so.
Telling a lie becomes a sin if you tell it to take advantage of a person, but if you tell a lie to do a good thing … that is not a sin … Even God tells lies very often.
I have met many famous, so-called famous, Senators and Congressmen; but to my eyes they are nothing. They are weak and helpless. We will win the battle. This is our dream, our project. But shut your mouth tight.
After the demise of communism and the destruction of democracy, all that will remain will be the True Family and True Children system, centered upon True Parents [Moon's title for himself and his wife]. That is what is happening now.
America may boast of its virtues to the world, but look, democracy is now reaching the end of its rope. People thought democracy is the final anchor of the free world, but it is reaching its end. So what is left? America has been telling the weaker nations that they have to accept democracy, forcing them to receive so-called democracy. But look at America. It is rotten, top to bottom. There is nothing to be proud of, not their way of walking or talking or thinking.
When you hear me putting America down, your ears are not pleased. But if we continue living in this hub of the satanic world, this New York-DC area, we are in the darkness.
When Clinton and his policies come into being, the first opposition must come from Christianity. But Christianity has lost its center and its hope. For that reason, they have lost their power, and that is why Clinton was allowed to win the election. It was the failure of Christianity. This nation which is supposed to be Christian has been turned into almost a model nation for Satan, losing everything precious. People are losing their own identity, losing brotherhood, losing their own parents, and losing God. This nation has really become a playground for Satan.
Those "patriotic" conservatives have not fled screaming from Moon for saying these kinds of things. They have not denounced him. They have not even discussed them — nor, for that matter, have the media.
No, they not only continue to sturdily defend him and his many operations — most notably the Washington Times Moon’s newspaper, which has employed many leading conservative pundits — they positively embrace him, mostly because of his money. The most significant of these has been his embrace by the Bush family.
George H.W. Bush has appeared at major Moon-sponsored events and taken large sums of his money. Neil Bush has toured with him and also enjoys his considerable largesse. And President Bush has gone so far as to name a former Unification Church leader — Josette Sheeran — as his undersecretary of state for economic, business, and agriculture affairs.
But have the mainstream media dealt with any of this? Er, no. In fact, when the subject of the Bush clan’s ties to Moon have come up, people like the New York Times’ David Brooks — who got his start as a pundit at the Washington Times — call it a "bizarre assertion" and an instance of the "paranoid style in American politics."
Obviously, you don’t get to watch Moon’s "hateful" and "anti-American" remarks being replayed endlessly on CNN and Fox, nor watch every media outlet in the nation obsess over whether Republicans should repudiate him.
Funny how that works, isn’t it?

Hi Dave! So good to see you take this on … and give us the pointer to the Book Salon. John is a superb reporter – and his book is amazing!
That pic! He looks like he oughta be sellin’ Burger King Whoppers.
Finally someone is pointing this out!! Good work!! Digg!
He is one of the most dangerous people in this country, and why he’s walking around free is beyond me….people either don’t know about or remember the scandals in the 60’s and 70’s when he literally brainwashed tons of young people, meanwhile buying up everything he could get his hands on…his tentacles are deep and dangerous.
The other icky part about Moon is that we could be inadvertently supporting that freak if we’re eating at local sushi restaurants. Never had any idea this could be happening, hate to think it since I really like the Korean family that owns the local sushi shop. [sigh] So insidious.
If you want to bone up before the Book Salon tomorrow, you can catch an interview with Gorenfeld here, with Ed Brayton of Scienceblogs.
No YouTubes of the famous Reverend?
I’m off to read a book.
Gorenfeld is a great reporter – and has really dug into all the Moon nonsense. I’m so glad someone is chasing this story, even more glad it’s Gorenfeld who refuses to back down.
Having spent 134 months in Korea anything I have to say would cause an immediate earthquake at the lake! Emmie shemee peck pogi dah!
That’s 13!
This is an extremely good point. I have long wondered why the left didn’t make a bigger deal out of Moon’s deranged proclamations, and his financial support of conservative causes/pundits.
Another freakshow is the family behind Regnery Press–a long, long history of support for fascist causes (the founder was pro-Hitler) and the current publisher, his grandson, owns a whites-only dating service (and maybe even some sort of whites-only “resort,” IIRC).
Regnery publishes (maybe published? I seem to think they may have been bought by another right wing publishing company) all the biggies–Coulter and others–and no one has ever, ever called them on this.
The lack of interest on the part of tradmed has always blown me away. Likewise the fact that no one on the left has ever drawn attention to these powder-keg whackjobs. I would have a field day with this stuff.
Might want to make that Gorenfeld’s book, so as to be able to enjoy tomorrow’s book salon a bit better.
2PM FDL time/5PM Eastern time
Don’t have it around & close to the end of 3 other books which I am now determined to finish.
Yea, I was trying to think of something to do beside watching march madness :)
Thank you David!
remember the bizarro ceremony?
Hail to the Moon king
The “New Media” at work again:

The girl from the “3AM” cut her own commercial for Barack.
I don’t see it in the post, but is or isn’t the UN leader a relative of Moon?
Well lookee there…Charlie Black, current McCandyCain senior adviser was there to kiss Moon’s ring.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/…..92771.html
This is all getting really scary.
Great video, she explains the stage craft that makes the Clinton ad seem so ominous.
I think most people think the Moonies disappeared when they no longer saw them at airports. They would be shocked to learn everything the Rev has got his little fingers into & how cozy he has been with the bush family & others. I would be delighted if msm would focus on him. The msm couldn’t ask for a more bizarre, way out story with all their required winning elements, corruption, sex, religion, politics, money. It should be right up their alley but if msm didn’t bite on that crowning ceremony at the Dirksen Bldg (IIRC) a few years ago, I doubt they’ll start now.
I guess this is a full MOON day
I’m sure hoping Gorenfeld’s book and Dave’s post help to change that … a good reason to toss in some Digg’s on this … we can help drive attention to this story.
In Korea, the family name comes first, not last. The UN Secretary-General’s family name is “Ban” and his given name is “Ki-moon.”
I’ll say it again, nothing is more depraved and perverted than organized religion. Those who lead and those who follow have one goal – to destroy.
It doesn’t surprise me that some nutcase calls himself a spiritual leader and builds a commercial religious empire. It’s big business and tax exempt. What is difficult to wrap my head around is that people follow and obey such madness. I thought that what separates humans from the rest of the animal world is their mind. Apparently, not.
Ya gotta love it.
Moon is a not so well kept secret, the back door go to guy for some of these vile characters.
it seems the MSM is even slower on the uptake than I gave them credit for if they keep hammering on this meme.
Can you say Pushback?
I can.
They throw out manufactured controversies, one after another, looking for something to stick and in the mean time are leaving themselves wide open to the very swift counter punch that seems to keep hitting them square in the eye.
look at my link in 21 by Sam Harris.
This circus geek figured out how to out MaoMao Tung himself, and make a lot of bread, and own countries instead of running them. compare this scum to the Dalai Lama. Talk to an ex moonie sometime, if they are coherent yet.
I remember that back then his “religion” was always referred to as a “cult,” a dangerous “cult”. I still think there is much to be very wary of with him throwing his weight and wealth around. His speech alone is enough to turn off anyone with an ounce of sense. Our society would be better off without him.
Elliot has the link to that crowning ceremony story at 17.
The DC media doesn’t know what to do with Sun Myung Moon. When the Washington Star was on the verge of going under and closing, the media folks were lamenting the fact that DC was about to become a one-paper town. Along come the Moonies, and now they’ve got a second paper again . . . sort of. They don’t want to attack it much for fear of being labeled “religiously intolerant” and there’s also the old dictum of not attacking people who buy ink by the barrel.
Yeah, people in Washington were sort of afraid to talk about him, let alone oppose him publicly.
When I lived in Berkeley, I had a friend who had been “rushed” by them, she pulled back and didn’t fall in but it was a creepy story. She told me to warn me.
It is so odd. I have a friend that lives near the HQ for Scientology, and I usually get a chill walking near the “campus.” Just can’t understand how completely intelligent and capable people can let these rigid doctrines completely take over their lives.
In the immortal words of Mittmo Romnutz, “Religion requires freedom, and freefom requires religion.” Uhhhh….yea.
That’s a mighty broad brush you’re using, QuakerGirl.
As a pastor, I’m a leader in a religious organization, and my goal is hardly “to destroy.”
You can say “many” or “lots” or “some” or “a few” — but not “all” or “every.”
Let’s keep the discussion civil, please.
There is a key difference between the two circumstances. Obama declines to disown the people in his church, even though he disowns some of the sentiments that they express, and the media does not understand why he would do this.
The Republicans’ relationship with Moon is all about money. This the media can understand perfectly.
And let’s not forget who recently became Exec Editor of the Moonie Times…John Solomon, who was a common target of us in the Liberal blogs for his consistently false stories in the WaPoo, until his trek into Moonieland.
http://www.sourcewatch.org/ind…..hn_Solomon
Good point. As a non-religious person, I have a tendency to lump all religions together as well, when there are massive differences between most.
Via Froomkin,
I think Dana Perino is going to pass into the American language. “Dumb as Dana” “pulling a Perino”, we already have “pig missile”. What a godsend for the language and what a disaster for the country.
…that requires people not to like them.
MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.
Remember the story about the Moonies taking crosses out of churches and burning them? What happened to that, and why isn’t it being reported?
D umb

D ogshit
anyone know moon’s wife’s name?
trying to track political donations, so far, nuthin’ on record under his name or his church……..if there are any, must be under another business name, or wife.
can’t find link of money to bushes.
This is a great post. Well said. It must be the season that is bringing out the worst in people as they act out the crucifixion scene across the world.
My god would not send his “only son” to die for my sins. Please, let him live and I’ll take responsibility for my own bad behavior. No torture, cruelty and slow death to save me from anything! Why would I accept something so vile to save my selfish ass. Such a belief is dark, primitive and unevolved.
If someone here hasn’t read Sam Harris’ post, here is an excerpt.
Sam Harris at Huffington Post writes:
“to hold themselves to a standard that requires people not to like them,’ she said.”
Heh, doesn’t take much to meet that standard.
I haven’t been following Moon closely over the years(although my brother used to work at one of his papers – which tanked).
What’s the reason he supports Republicans? Is Moon against abortion? Evolution? Does he like being rich?
Yes.
OMG! That list of quotes!
and forgot to add—why was moon never arrested after the brainwashing became public? remember when parents kidnapped their kids to get them back?
weren’t some of them underage?
i remember all of this kept me the hell away from any ideology/relationship that didn’t let me think for myself.
dunno.
what is he Korean? Somebody oughta check his passport file.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/…..92757.html
Here’s another one about Parsley and McCain.
had a friend or two that were in it, one, long removed, may still be lost somewhere. The other came out wondering what happened for 25 years. Was it just me or were they really needy people that followed this piper? The folks that don’t feel like they have anything going on and just jump up and go?
Oh Dana….
I do think there is truth in what she is saying…she means it.
Actually, no. This basic unfairness is making me scream. The corporate control over our media is worse than ever. I keep thinking of Foser’s “It’s the Media”.
I do see signs of change, however. But they’re so small that I don’t know if it’s enough. If it were not for the media (especially Rush and FoxNews) this would be a much more enlightened nation.
Moon has some Democrats on the payroll also. He has more Republicans, though, partially because of his views, and partially because the Republicans are simply more willing to be bought.
One of the saddest things that has happened under this administration is the ruining of religion. In the past I went to church and now the very thought of it makes me feel soiled in some way.
I don’t know. I just don’t know.
hugh at 41 says—”I think Dana Perino is going to pass into the American language. “Dumb as Dana””
HEY hey hey
don’t start that as a new phrase, please, that’s MY name you’re messin’ with, though i do spell it differently, it sounds the same……… *g*
I think Moon ”supports” the Pukes, because they are the war-mongering party, and he was recruiting ”followers” so that he could order them to go fight against N. Korea. He wants to be King of North Korea and the world.
Why won’t The NewsHour play tapes of Moon? Maybe we should ask Lehrer? Maybe we should ask the producing station, WETA?
I knew saving this link would come in handy some day
Video
Just where does Moon get all those huge sums of money (more zeros than I can type) and not give an accountability? What Republicans received contributions from him?
Like so many cults, Moon goes after the young to bend their minds and plant fear if they don’t accept him as their lord and master. Sadly, it can take a lifetime to undo the damage to a young mind.
Organized is so vile! Show me organized religion and I’ll show you where racism dwells.
I know what you’re saying. They even tried to ruin Christmas and succeeded to a degree. It’s my fave time of the year and they made it political.
Why do I feel like I should put my beverage down before clicking on that link?
Then again The Star was run, for about 5 years before it’s collapse, by the South African government. They were basically shilling for apartheid…but careful not to rock the boat too much in terms of domestic politics. That might get people snooping. Moon brought in a whole new approach, much more in line with pushing “politics of personal destruction” when issues couldn’t bring someone down…and while still taking vitriolic anti-socialist stances, they also began enunciating very odd religious views. Notice that there were no more exposes of “cults” and other things like that…these were common in the 1970’s.
:-)
The link is fine but the youtube of the ceremony at the website is creeeeeeppppyyyy
The msm is a very peculiar bunch.
I still have an old book on my shelf published in 1978, “Snapping, America’s Epidemic of Sudden Personality Change” by Flo Conway & Jim Siegelman. It delved into all the cults at the time including Hare Krishna & how people get sucked into them. I think I should reread it, it probably still has a lot of relevance today. I do remember one part about a young person immersed in a cult who made a rare visit back home & the family dog growled at him, thought he was a complete stranger.
When I lived in Seattle, years ago, I knew a young lady who became a Moonie. They sought her out, and she was seduced, and treated royally. Her grandfather had some kreosote patent, and she got a penny for every telephone pole, a nickel for every piling, manufactured in the USA. She gave her trust to Moon. They then stopped treating her royally, and eventually disowned her, keeping the pennies an nickels, which have really added up over the past 35 years or so…
iirc they got a lot of money from fleecing Japanese widows.
Wow! What a rich link.
Moonies, Nazis, or Bin Ladens, the Bush family has always been for sale.
Hi cinnamonape
Was it you who told me about their recruiting methods?
One global nation under God,
He is upon us.
That is so sad. No way she can get it back, I suppose.
That’s a pretty broad brush. I am part of organized religion, and try as part of that to help fight racism.
This was back around 1970-71. She sued them and lost.
And let’s not forget the most recent aspect of the Reverend Moon’s reach into the Presidential Family.
Neil Bush recently gave a speech at the Universal Peace Conference in Paraguay as a guest of the Moon-affiliated sponsors.
Neil Bush Consorts With Moonies
While there the Moonies, “First Brother” in tow, gained an audience with the El Presidente Duarte. It’s reported that they discussed with Duarte the scheme to build a 50 mile underwater tunnel between Alaska and Siberia. It’s unclear precisely what benefits such a tunnel would have, or whether the Moonies expected Duarte to fund such a venture with Paraguayan tax dollars.
The Moonies have large tracts of ranchland in Paraguay, and some have wondered why the Bush family have spent so much time in the nation recently. They have apparently purchased several thousands of acres of ranchland themselves, although the previous owner is not reported.
Moon bailed out Liberty University. Jerry Fallwell went to him when the univ. was on the brink of bankruptcy.
Moon also paid George H.W. Bush something like $10 million to speak in South America.
Fifteen years ago, I worked with a guy who sniffed model airplane glue. That was pretty much the same kind of statement that he was coming out with.
Something tells me that she and the Prez are building a life size 747 in the basement of the W.H..
you are so wrong the puklicans have NO problems/ great brand, wunnerful brand/
are you kiddin?
That was un-be-lieve-able
show me a pile of corupt stolen money ,ill show you a puke, trying to cart it away
Yeah…the tale of one of the students under my “protection” in Berkeley. The Unification Church was notorious for luring students to their “free dinners” and using individuals there to seduce members of the opposite sex away. We’d warn our dormies about this, and make sure their roommates knew when they had taken off on such opportunities (there were others doing similar stuff Scientology, EST, Jim Jones’ Church, etc.) so we could come and “intervene”.
We would basically threaten police and University involvement (”The University will have to deal with the family”; “You’ve encouraged them to break their dorm lease and University Registration, etc.). Eventually they would back down. But it made us RA’s wonder how many young people disappeared down that “rabbithole”.

These people are batshit crazy. I think they must all be on drugs…the whole lot of them.
Actually they’re not crazy – that’s too easy. They are greedy, both for money and power and nothing else matters to them. If pigs had money the Repubs would be wallowing with them.
it’s the smell of dollar bill green ink
Nope. Not kidding. I’ve posted a link here several times to an article by Robert Parry, published in December of 2006, called The GOP’s $3 Billion Propaganda Organ. Robert Parry broke the Iran-Contra stories and was black listed afterwards.
it’s always the kool-ade
I’m sorry if offend you Peterr. I was brought up in the Lutheran Church and I was close to the Catholic church. I am even a graduate of a religious college. The deeper I went into doctrine the more disillusioned with organized religion became. In the end, I found not one wise, inspiring person I could “follow”, nor any doctrine I could follow.
Ministers I considered fine, moral people could be silent in the most horrific of times. The Lutheran Church remained silent on Vietnam. They didn’t give guidance or even mention it except in an occasional prayer. Other than that, it didn’t exist.
I studied the Bible and I found a violent disturbing book with a god (a trinity of three guys) who loves vengeance. It was about killing, oppression and lots of animal sacrifices.
I still don’t understand how someone can stand on a pulpit, above the masses, and give advice and spread The Word. Yes, I do paint with a broad brush. The same hierarchy runs the organization. It is male oriented that may consider women as long as they abide by the male hierarchy.
The more I studied religion, the apparent it became they were cults. An individual’s spirituality is something totally different. This is between me and something greater than myself which I call “the light”. There are no human sacrifices, no hell and damnation, no heaven. It is a fullness of peace.
I use no war language to celebrate the spiritual. No might swords, Christian soldiers, might fortresses, or other militant words. I know you trust your beliefs and I respect that. I still have found no glories from missionaries, conquering crusades, spreading the word. Only, the destruction of peoples and environment.
I hope we can still be friends.
Well la dee dah
Absolutely. More can be found from googling “Bush Moon Argentina”. Running into this stuff a few years ago was a big hint to me that we’d gone far around the bend from, you know, regular political stuff, if you know what I mean.
”The Associated Press later identified Stanley, Inc. as the Virginia-based contractor whose two employees were terminated. One prescient blogger who guessed correctly that Stanley was the contractor in question noted that its CEO is a GOP donor:
…[O]ne thing that would add to the appearance of impropriety is that CEO Nolan has, according to the Open Secrets database, been a campaign contributor to Sen. Joe Lieberman, a leading supporter of Obama’s Republican adversary John McCain. In March 2005 Nolan gave $1,000 to Lieberman’s reelection campaign.”
http://rawstory.com/news/2008/….._0321.html
The NBC News ’Deep Background’ blog has more on Stanley, Inc.
O/T. Friday’s news dump:
A company called Stanley Inc contracted for the DoS passport breaches.
Seems there may be ties (tin-foil) to McCain?? (through old Joe Lieberman). Hmmm.
The wife’s name is Hak Ja Han. I would suspect that any political contributions are well-concealed and laundered through others. We do know that he often uses the Universal Peace Federation as a way to give “speaking gratuities” to influential individuals. Several politicians participated in his coronation a few years back…some have said they were unaware of who Moon was, or what the event was about.
Moon has subsidized the Washington Times by about $3 billion in losses…and has given $1 million to the George H.W. Bush Library through intermediary “cut-outs”.
i love the guy…forgot the name of his sight ..but he is terrif, thanks
Very much so. There’s surely room for us politically like-minded folks to run the gamut spiritually. What brings us together here is our politics – the politics of the people, for the people and by the people. Some of us have very deep connections to our spirituality. Personally my connection to my spirituality is actually what transforms the parts of me that have been destructive. The religion I follow is about love, mercy, justice and freedom.
Here’s another article, also by Robert Parry, that’s part of a whole series on Moon. It directly addresses Jerry Fallwell’s trip to SE Asia to talk to Moon about Liberty. Parry saw a possible link between this infusion of cash and Falwell’s participation in the Clinton chronicles that accused the Clintons of every possibly imaginable crime.

yeah, well i’m not laughing. It’s about way past time that the Christian religious extremists get back into the woodwork from which they crawled. And I know of what I speak, I was raised by some of these people. They are as destructive as Islamist extremists, ideologically. not as violent, but every bit as destructive.
Parry is an excellent writer and researcher. I have saved every column he has written since June, 2006.

OT: Reported so far. The contracting company sited in the State Department Passpartgate has been identified as Stanley, Inc. which provides services to government and military agencies and was just awarded a 570 million dollar contract to continue passport support program.
Bush admin are some contracting outsourcing fools, aren’t they?
Yes, we can remain friends, and in that spirit, let me say that you still are using that same broad brush.
I’m sorry that your experience of the church — and especially the Lutheran church — was as painful as you describe. Your experience of it, however, is not universal. My pastors in the 1960s and 70s did speak out against the Vietnam War, and most of my female clergy colleagues (including a number of female bishops) would be amazed to hear anyone describe their style of leadership as following (or bowing to) a male hierarchy.
I have no problem with criticism of religion in general, Christianity in particular, and my own personal religious beliefs — as long as the criticism is backed up with facts and not generalizations and stereotypes.
this must stop
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A teenager died after police used a Taser on him inside a grocery store in northeast Charlotte.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police homicide detectives said they will investigate why police used the Taser on 17-year-old Darryl Turner Thursday afternoon.
His mother, Tammi Fontenot, told Eyewitness News, “I want answers. I want to know why. I just want to know why.”
Police said an argument escalated between Turner and one of his supervisors at a Food Lion on Prosperity Church Road. Officers said the teen assaulted a store manager by throwing an object after officers arrived on scene.
Police released a statement reading, “[Turner] was highly agitated and refused all verbal commands and began walking toward the officer.” At that point, the officer used his Taser on Turner.
Turner went to Carolinas Medical Center-University, but he died a short time later.
There are many of us in organized religions whose tenets include not to discriminating between races, sexes, etc.
I don’t like organized religion so I don’t participate. I also don’t presume to judge other people for what they do.

is moon still alive?
QG – I’m really uncomfortable with the broad brush here … in my day job, I see religious organizations leading some of the most significant human rights work, in my personal life I see so many church communities doing superb work on behalf of the poor and oppressed … and so many members of churches leading progressive efforts. While I am not involved in an organized religion myself, I am honored to get to work with so many of them and hope that their work and beliefs can be valued.
only problem with it,is peeps seem to die in the millions because of it
sadly, yes.
Yes, though I don’t recall any very recent news of him.
On the tasered teen-ager: Apparently he was not armed, not even with a throwable item. Why in the world would a trained police officer, and one of more than one on the scene at that, have fired any kind of weapon at him? If you practice your techniques, then you should be ready to use them as needed.
it? Yea but in my opinion people would find another reason to kill each other, say politics. My main point is I am not convinced that anyone here needs to be giving all these high falutin lectures about how spectacular THEY are.

and i tolerate atheists, i tolerate agnostics, i tolerate all religions, as long as they tolerate me. if not, then the conversation ends.
I certainly do not wish to offend an individual’s personal beliefs. If I offended anyone, for that I apologize. I know religion is a very touchy subject.
There are good people who feel the pain of others and do a great deal to easy the circumstances of someone in need. They can be part of a religious group, professional group, organization. They want to assist others. That is commendable and greatly appreciated. It is desperately needed and necessary. Compassion is a beautiful trait.
I have come across such individuals in various religious groups, Catholics, Protestants, Hindu, Muslim and I am moved by their humanity and compassion. I have come across such people who have no religious affiliation with the same kindness and compassion. It is a gift to be in their presence.
It is the humanity and kindness of the individual who stops to help a stranger in need. Such people have befriended me and I am grateful to them for their goodness and kindness. Such compassion is uplifting.
and david, in my digging i found that josette sheeran is now josette shiner, and that she left the church in the mid-90’s, but that last part i wasn’t able to thoroughly verify.
i still can’t believe moon owns the washington times, i couldn’t believe it when it happened and i still can’t believe it.
how has this hamster been able to do all he has done?
dunno.
great post
and UPI
sadly-yeah, that too, i found that one to be more scary than the ’times’……..he owns a lot of things, i’m trying to track down a master list…….
dmac, in my opinion, the best source for a master list, if there is one, is consortium news. Robert Parry.
I always thought Michele Malkin was a moonie /snark (or maybe not, now that I think on it)
It is indeed. Well said, my friend.
I, too, am moved by similar people with their own motivations for acting with kindness and compassion.
Ban Ki-Moon is not a Moon relative. He is now playing ball with Moon, though. Ban sent a letter of support to the Washington Times on its 25 anniversary. EVERYTHING Moon is able to accomplish now is the result of the conservative movement in America accepting him, working with him and letting him get away with the fraud that the WT is somehow “independent” of his goals to to bring about a right wing theocratic leaning, homophobic, authoritarian governance to our once great nation.
The country is simply not aware of who has had more to with our political direction than anyone.
Moon is the “True Father” of today’s conservatism.
that was supposed to be a response to #19
lindy–yeah!
i love his brain………he probably does have it.
thanks, lindy.
i keep wanting to ask, but is never a good time in the thread-
aren’t you the one that made the pelosi bumper sticker for me a while back?
if so, i gave it to him, mom and dad’s neighbor, he loved it, he put it in the back window of his mini-van…..
he’s 80, a democrat in boehner’s district, and loves to stir it up.
Moon’s relationship with the conservative movement/Republican Party is NOT all about money. Moon has created front groups to mold and guide conservatism.
Read about the American Freedom Coalition as one example. This was a front Moon created to gather the Christian “right” for political power at a time between the demise of the Moral Majority and the creation of the Christian Coalition. Moon supplied the cash, yes, but he also supplied the personnel and “leadership.” Moon called the the president of the AFC one of his “three musketeers.”
Moon is the “True Father” of today’s conservative movement.
it’s back to the tired old RePIGlican Rules , , ,
Rule # 1
Punish ALL sinners !
Rule # 2
Republicans NEVER sin .
Actually, dmac, Gorenfeld has the details on this: Sheeran is Josette’s maiden name, the one she uses now, and she did indeed leave the church in 1995. When she did, she also divorced her Moon-chosen husband, whose last name was Shiner. When she was ME at the Times, for instance, her name was Josette Sheeran Shiner.
As for the authenticity of her church departure: Gorenfeld also points out that his sources tell him that certain of the “apostates” who left in the mid-’90s were actually being groomed to surreptitiously carry out Moon’s work in the mainstream, and there’s a high likelihood Sheeran was one of these.
Trying to “track” Moon’s contribution is a waste of time for the most part.
Sure he has given a lot of money to his favorite shills like, Bush 41, and he gave 250 grand to the Cheney Bush 2005 inaugural but that is not how Moon operates and you miss his methods if you go there. This is why so many miss what he HAS ALREADY done. That is, Moon molds the entire political environment – he does just pay someone to do something for him. At least that is not his usual MO.
Moon funds fronts and individuals that create the environment – fronts like the American Freedom Coalition designed to gather the Christian Right for political power, or the Washington Times to give hard right politics backbone and spread or create their lying talking points.
He does fund some individuals like key shills such as Bush 41 for obvious reasons, Bush brings him credibility around the world. But mainly it is individuals who create the political environment he wishes. People like Falwell and LaHaye who help empower and gather Moon’s beloved theocrats but don’t show up on normal donor lists. He props up the backbone of the right – people like Richard Viguerie or the little known but important father of the individual attack ad, Terry Dolan.
Read about one source of Moon’s cash – the swindling of widows – here.
Shiner does claim to have left the Moon “church” but there is a whole lot more to it.
Should note: Moon does not believe in “churches” or “religion” – he thinks there should be no religion now because we are to all follow him as the leader of the Kingdom of God/Moon which they call “Cheon Il Guk.”
But she can deny being a “member” of the Unification Church the same as Moon himself could do – for the “church” was disbanded and renamed the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification(FFWPU) – which makes it easier for other religions and people to work with Moon – they can rationalize they are not Moon followers but just working with the “federation.” In fact they are his unwitting and witting chumps.
Shiner also claimed to not have anymore contact with the “church.” Yet when she went to work for Bush at the State Department she had as her senior adviser, a long time and still moonie.
Read some of that here. Embedding Links not working here it is:

It should also be noted that Shiner was not just some regular moonie, she was integral to his media. Many think she actually ran the paper not Pruden and that she gave Moon the idea to start the paper in the first place.
here’s a quote from former member who entertained Moon around the world.

The odds of Shiner not still not supplying intel to the Moon organization are as close to nil as one can get, imo.
The point is – when is the conservative movement going to disown and reject their ENTIRE movement for it was guided, molded, funded and propped up by the “True Father” of the conservative movement, Sun Myung Moon.
Absent Moon’s conditioning billions in overseas, often swindled, cash
http://www.dailykos.com/storyo…../94/234851
…the Republican Party would have never nominated someone like Bush 43. Moon created the environment for this to happen.
Moon has more to do with the political direction of the United States the last 30 years than anyone. It is not close if you look.
Scaife is said to have given 3 to 400 million to the Conservative movement over the last 45 years – maybe a billion in today’s dollars. Moon spent 3 billion on the Washington Times alone in 25 years.
It’s an issue which is exemplary of how the media is NOT liberal. It is not even knowledgeable about how we got where we are today politically.
Moon brags about using the WT to influence the nation.
Here’s one for you – if people really look at the Moon organization, see how they “debate.” You will see that today’s conservative rationalizes and makes excuses for evil and lawbreaking the same way a Moon follower does. They relate just like moonies to the world. Always feeling they are being persecuted, always thinking they and they alone are going God’s will, the “us vs. them” stuff….the whole thing is all there.
Moon made today’s conservatism into his image. Homophobic, authoritarian, theocractic, and fascist with no regard for the law.
You must understand Moon molds, he absorbs, he does not just buy off people.
Moon calls what he does “subjugation” – we appear to be going willingly or “naturally.”
No doubt conservtaives are helping Moon subvert our political system.
Let’s put it bluntly, today’s Moon molded conservative movement worked with Moon to subvert our political system. This is what is going on today but people don’t want to admit it – they do not even want to look.
Subvert? Sound too harsh? Not my word…
James Whelan the first editor of the Washington Times, in a 1991 “must view” panel discussion about Moon’s media, said this – a quote from it which ALL of the people who have or intend to help Moon should read very closely. It may be the most cogent statement about the Moon organization I have ever read.

Conservatives and the Republican Party worked with Moon – the theocrat – to tear down the wall between church and state. They did this when they helped Bush promote his Faith Based Vote Buying Scheme.

As I recall, Reverend Moon was reported to have close connections with South Korea’s intelligence agency. This agency was initially funded by the US government (especially the CIA and the military). This raises the possibility that Reverend Moon’s rise was some back door intelligence operation to influence American public opinion. This may explain the reticence of the MSM to explore these connections.
No. The leader of the UN is not a relative of Moon’s. However, thanks to decades of the conservative movement working with and accepting Moon, Ban Ki-Moon is forced to play ball with Moon. Moon has at least 4 NGOs and his own United Nations, the culmination of his life long plot, the Universal Peace Federation. Ban sent the Washington Times a letter of support when they had their 25th gala last May.
speaking of the WT 25th gala…
Another of the thousands of things about Moon people ignore is that Bush 41 drank Moon’s “Holy Wine.” He participated in a Moon ritual, one of the two most important – which ties you to Moon’s “lineage.”
41 was not conned into it as some may say. He did it willingly AFTER he was told by a Moon preacher that by drinking it he would doing similar to taking Moon’s communion, that he would be making Bush’s “a Blessed Family for America.” That means you are accepting and willing to promote Moon’s agenda. Being a “Blessed Family” is a short step below being a “Blessed Central Family” which means a full fledged dues paying Moonie.
see the video here:
http://realsunmyungmoon.blogsp…..myung.html
Does that mean Bar drank it too? Is that what happened to them?
The only good thing about all of this is that Moon will soon be passing on to his heavenly reward and there is no one like him, anywhere, to carry on. Also I have heard he has gone crackers. as in Dementia.
They say he has a bank in Ecuador where the Bushies haul their cash.
none of the so-called christians seem to take into account that in order for their version of the second coming to occur that a full 87% of the world population ..which is not christian.. will have to be “dealt with” ..
the only survivors of armageddon are supposed to be the true believers .. and there are several religions who claim to be among .. or “the one”..
fact is .. for the soecond comers to get their dream .. about eight and half billion people will have to be eliminated from the face of the earth .. yeah ..eight-and-one-half-billion people … whoa …
what sane person would be willing to sacrifice eight-and-one-half-billion people in order to acheive their “paradise on earth”
hell ..even the radical-islamo-muslims aren’t that crazy … their goal is to first convert the whole world to their religion .. then establish a caliphate bringing sharia law to every nation on earth ..thereby turning it into paradise-on-earth .. which is pretty far out in and of itself i admit .. but they aren’t openly wishing for .. nor willingly working to bring about ..nor fanatically enamoured of an event which would require the slaughter of ..that’s right ..there oms that number again .. eight-and-a-half-billion people ..
thank ya kindly .. but my gawd is not nearly that bloody and murderous …
and most amazingly .. we give credence to these born again mass-murder-on-an-unheard-of-scale adherents ..
i gotta go .. i’ve used up today’s allotment of hypens and periods ..
