Here we are, supposedly the richest and most powerful country in the world, and the British media is reporting on us like we’re some broken-down wreck of a third world country.
Meanwhile, at the same time, all the Republicans in the California state assembly are working to keep yacht and private jet sales tax-free tax loopholes in place. And did I mention that California has a $16 billion budget deficit?
This is why the Republican brand is like tainted dog food: With the economy nosediving and a massive deficit, their response is to protect tax breaks on yachts and jets rather than help the people who can’t even afford a roof. (Any minute now, Bar Bush will be along to tell us how not having to worry about all that troublesome yardwork is actually working out quite well for them.)
Yeah, yeah, I know, all those extra sales of yachts, jets, and yacht-jet Transformers, and all those sales tax savings, will go right back into the economy, and everyone in the Dubyaville will get totally sweet jobs in the aeroyacht industry and get their homes back in no time. Blow me.
Anyway, if you’re wondering what to do with your tax savings from a recent yacht, jet, or yacht-jet Transformer purchase, why not give it to the Courage Campaign so they can run some Yacht Party ads on cable news and fake news shows. I mean, you already got your tax break, so what do you care if the next guy has to pay sales tax on his? Why, he might use those savings to get a bigger one than yours, and you wouldn’t want that, now would you?
Update/Clarification On Yacht/Plane Sales Tax: If you buy your yacht, plane, or yacht/plane Transformer in CA, you do have to pay sales tax. But if you buy it outside of CA and leave it outside of CA for 90 days, you do not have to pay any CA sales tax at all. True, you’d have to pay the sales tax of whatever state you buy it in… but Oregon doesn’t have sales tax, and it’s right next door.
I would also ask the question: If the loophole is that hard to exploit, then why bother to preserve it at all?

Democrats need to learn how to talk about taxes. Benedict Ronald made it a taboo to talk about tax increases but we have to stand up and say it’s naive to think all that money is just going to come trickling down on us from above. We’re running up the tab on our children.

They listen while they work, and all that is available is Rush/Hannity et al. Here in San Diego, Air America has gone. I know LS said it is gone in her area of Texas too. We need to reach people who should be good democrats, but are not.

This BBC video of the shanty town is out in the Inalnd Empire around the Chino-Riverside area. I saw a report on this in the local news here a week or so ago. This is where they have built the most new neighborhoods during the housing boom and now is being hurt worst by the bubble bursting. If this downward spiral continues, it will become the “dry Katrina.” It is going to become rows of abandoned houses in empty neighborhoods with folks living in camps all around the fringes.

We’ve been headed toward a third-world economy for some time now. The growing gap between rich and poor, the decline in educational standards, and the loss of much of our manufacturing base are trends that have been around for decades. This is just evidence that we’re not far from our goal.

That is true, the banks and mortgage companies are not maintaining the houses they own that have been repossessed and the neighborhoods and home values are deteriorating faster because of the blight of these properties. It advances the situation of them being taken over by the homeless once it gets too large for law enforcement to handle.

The teachers are pissed. Hundreds of pink slips are going out as we speak. In the county next to where I live they had to increase class size from 20 to 36. I say bring on the recall, but it won’t solve the major financial issues facing this state. For starters they need to re-regulate electricity.

I am almost ashamed to admit that I refused to work for Angelides when Arnie was up for re-election because his record was no better than Arnies. I also knew there was NO way he would win. California politics is so screwed. It would be nice to have even a few good dems here. I don’t see anyone on the horizon.

I have not read all of the above, however.
a) California has sales tax on boats/yachts/cars/airplanes WHATEVER
aa) I paid thousands of dollars of sales tax on my 22 foot ‘yacht’ this year for a ‘yacht’ manufactured in California
b) one can TRY to avoid sales tax on cars/planes/’yachts’ by taking delivery out of state, leaving said item out of state for 6 months, then bringing it into the state.
c) to counter abuses of sales tax, states have initiated a ‘use’ tax that is equivalent to sales tax
d) we are talking about a $21 million revenue loss in the face of a $16 BILLION dollar deficit
e) I suspect that there are more car than ‘yacht’ owners avoiding sales tax, more airplane than boat owners as well.
Answer to a $21 million dollar problem = enforce the use tax. Don’t try to say bogus stupid looking things like there are no taxes on ‘yachts’.
You want more sales tax revenue for California – tax the internet (except wine). You want more revenue- California is a donor federal tax state to the tune of 23%, contact your rep to get it back down to the 1995 level of 5%. You want more revenue – raise the property taxes that are less than national average. You want more revenue – raise the DMV reg fee. You want more revenue- give up the idea that food should not be sales taxes – tax corn syrup, sugar and fat laden foods. You want more revenue – fine – but don’t smear ‘yachties’ inappropriately, it only looks stupid.

No one said any such thing. Every republicans voted to keep a loophole in legislation that would keep folks from paying sales tax on those items. Every dem voted to close the loophole.
Boxer checked out the disaster plans for California after Katrina – FEMA had lost them. Not only would we have nor will we have gotten no help, we would not have known what to do ourselves. All those plans that made the Northridge earthquake somewhat recoverable – lost.

There are sales taxes on yachts. There is no loophole. We are talking about the difference between 3 months vs 12 months, and $5million dollars.

I’ve was born and raised in California. I am really glad that you have the ability to own a yacht. My husband and I are both educated and both have to work just to have a few things.. don’t expect a bunch of sympathy for people who can afford to pay a few thousand more for a boat they don’t need. Children are going to bed hungry in this state every night.
A boat/yacht for a sailmaker IS a necessity, the same as car dealers need cars, jet ski dealers need jet skis and so on. My business puts food on 6 family’s tables year round, 10 seasonly, supplies Kaiser healthcare, and a roof over their heads, and I am proud. I can provide custom, quality work, successfully, a rarity in a time when most sail lofts are moving out of the country.
I paid sales tax on my boat, although it would have been easy to take delivery elsewhere and avoid both the sales tax and the use tax. The law that lapsed rolled back a 12 month window to 3 months for out of state deliveries of boats/yachts for in state use. The state should enforce the use tax and the sales tax for slackers who do the out of state delivery scam – but you know what? I don’t think there are many ‘yachties’ who actually do that very expensive route.
My guess is that cars and airplanes make up the bulk of the tax scammers. Somewhere between $5-21 million tax dollars are purportedly lost, on a gross of $1-2 billion. Here is a list of sales and use tax delinquents in California in 2007. Notice how many car dealerships scam their sales/use taxes.
My point is (and was at 240) that knocking boaters/yachties as loophole deadbeats looks stupid in the face of the facts: it is more the land ‘yachts’ (cars) that are killing our state budget as opposed to boats. However, changing the window for all three – cars, boats, and planes will only be a drop in the bucket compared to the projected (at this point in time) $16 billion dollar deficit. My suggestions for real budget relief are up at 240.
