Between 7:25 p.m. and 7:50 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 21, 1998, the day the Lewinsky scandal exploded into public view, Mrs. Clinton departed the White House for an undisclosed location for discussions with people whose names are redacted from her schedule.
The following day, Mrs. Clinton held a 30-minute “private meeting” at the White House. The participants’ identities are removed from the schedule.
When Mr. Clinton admitted the affair to the nation on Aug. 17, 1998, that day on Mrs. Clinton’s calendar says simply, “No Public Schedule.” The following day, when Mr. and Mrs. Clinton, and their daughter, Chelsea, left the White House for a scheduled vacation on Martha’s Vineyard, the schedule reflects that trip at a time “TBD,” to be determined. No other events or meetings are listed on that day.
What?!? We don’t get the background chatter that she made Bill sleep on the sofa in the private residence for months afterward? Or that she used Kleenex tissues to dry her copious tears or that she sought solace with a pint of Ben and Jerry’s Chubby Hubby? Come on! What in the hell is wrong with these people — this occurred years ago and is none of our business. It wasn’t our business back then, and it sure as hell isn’t our business years later.
This is not news. It is a distraction. From what, you ask? For starters, the fact that John McCain can’t tell the two major branches of Islam apart, and has managed in one "foreign policy" trip to enrage the Palestinians and insult the Jews by equating Purim with Halloween, in a "goodwill tour" masquerading as a transparent bid to court American Jews in the delegate-rich states of NY, NJ and FL.
And quite a reversal from past McCain statements that the press has studiously avoided mentioning in its reportage.
…"I would expect concessions and sacrifices by both sides."…
When I interviewed McCain last month, I asked him about the interview. Did his readiness to send Scowcroft and Baker as his negotiators with the Israelis signify a different kind of approach than the more neoconservative one he had been associated with? "I respect and admire all of those people and their knowledge and background," he said. "They don’t make the issues. The president does." And, McCain added, "What I was saying was that I would appoint someone to go to the region who was well regarded: Scowcroft, Baker, Kissinger, George Mitchell, Tony Zinni, Bill Kristol, Randy Scheunemann. I can give you a list of 50 names of people who would qualify and go over there and make a good assessment of the situation to get the process started."
Clearly vexed, McCain turned his attention to the reporter. "So let me just say one thing about this reporter. I was walking through a crowd of people at Verkunde, and this reporter trails behind me and we had a very offhand conversation. He said, ‘like ’67 borders,’ and I didn’t know what he was talking about, and he had a tape recorder, so I would be very careful about assuming anything."… (emphasis mine)
Let’s contemplate that McCain didn’t know what a reporter meant by the ’67 borders in Israel – in 2006 — or his attempt to tap dance around his signaled shift to a new policy stance toward Israel having to make concessions for peace, and then his back-pedal from it when neocons and wingnuts raised hell. And add in the recent embarrassing failure to comprehend the difference between Iran or Iraq training Al Qaeda, and begin to see the need for some in-depth, probing foreign policy questions that are not being asked of McCain by the press.
He’d send Bill f-ing Kristol to negotiate a peace settlement between Israel and the Palestinians? Is he utterly daft?!? Or just a ginormous press suck-up?
A back and forth and back again on a major point of foreign policy contention is still news, isn’t it? Only if it’s a Democrat, otherwise it is sweep it under the rug time. Would you like more pudding and pie?

Christy!
McCain doesn’t know sh*t from shinola. He not only doesn’t know much about foreign policy sand foreign affairs, but also knows next to nothing about the economy… And Joe-Lie? The less said about that moron the better…(Where’s punaise when we need him?)
My contempt for Joe Lieberman knows no bounds.
—punaise sub
BTW, I dropped him a line just to say howdy and he said to say Hi to everyone.
Lieberman is John McCain’s Nancy Reagan: “We’re doing everything we can.”
Slowly, surely, word will out. McCain is daft.
CHS:
This is a wonderful catalogue of what is more and more looking like McCain’s total ignorance, rather than the cynical pandering to the Israelis I thought it was. He seems genuinely not to understand why Zinni and Kristol, or Baker and Kissinger, don’t go together in a sentence for the consumption of Israelis.
One sentence you want to reword — you’ve got it backwards:
“goodwill tour” masquerading as a transparent bid to court American Jews in the delegate-rich states of NY, NJ and FL.” That
And digging through ten year old records to find completely useless information to use as a shiny object in this manner deserves a swift kick in the…..
So McCain is running on his foreign policy expertise–and he has already said he doesn’t know anything about the domestic economy–this is all he’s got?
What the hell is the matter with the press? Do they care if we elect a Know-Nothing to lead us?
Spotlight this post and get the word out there. Make sure the press hears what we think of their shameful silence about McCain’s ignorance on foreign policy.
This is why I don’t get cable, and don’t have a TV so much as a computer that records the few programs I want to watch and a big monitor.
Maybe you guys pointed to this yesterday, but Media Matters has an interesting article of the press’s lack of coverage of McCain’s foreign policy “expertise”.
That is just amazing to me…I mean, can he really not know this stuff?
Gawd, maybe he IS losing it…I’ve shied away from that view, considering it somewhat ageist, but I can’t believe that he didn’t once know this stuff, even if he no longer does.
help me gaia !! he really is Chimpigula
maybe Short Ride should clue his ass in that no one dons party hats and noisemakers on Rosh Hashanah, puts ashes on their forehead for Yom Kippur, and no one eats ham and colors eggs for Passover
He’s passed the Commander in Chief threshhold!
Christy, Christy, Christy,
When are you going to accept that what is called ‘news’ in television is nothing more than light entertainment and background noise. What gets shown is determined by the information fed to producers from focus groups and advertisers. News has nothing to do with it. It’s Entertainment Tonight.
We have to make up a new word to designate what used to be called ‘news’. The old word has been degraded beyond recognition. Or else we have to make a word that adequately defines what the media call ‘news’ but obviously isn’t.
My only exposure to teevee news is in airport waiting lounges, but if that is representative (CNN) it’s pretty sad stuff. At least when you’re watching sports, you know its out and out entertainment, and nothning more.
You know, the CFO of my company mentioned Lieberman the other day. Told me he was the “only decent” Democrat.
He had to pick his nuts up off the floor after I got done explaining to him that Joe Short Ride Lieberman was NOT a Democrat.
My contempt for Joe Lieberman runs long, deep, enduring, and will NEVER die.
John McCain is a waste, too. I want him to reimburse the taxpayers for this latest campaign stop in Iraq. He can give my share to the Obama campaign.
Hey, has McCain released his campaign numbers yet so we can know for sure he’s broken the law. Not that anybody will do anything about it.
“What the hell is the matter with the press? Do they care if we elect a Know-Nothing to lead us?”
______________
Asked and answered in three words: George W. Bu’ush.
Just goes to show how far you’ll get by serving ribs to the press.
One would have thought Holy Joe would have given St. John the Schicksa’s Guide to Living with your Mother-in-Law. Never, ever let her take a taxi home. I mean, borders are not bookstores, John, they are things people in the Middle East have been fighting and dying over since the pyramids were a new suburb. Stop confusing those little blue pills with your Alzheimer’s medication.
maybe that reporter was speaking Israeli . . .
thinking about it, he made that comment about Purim bec those around him saw him as such a clueless dumbass, they broke it in to digestible Weekly Reader pieces for him
Thank you, CBS, for keeping us with Marquette and Kentucky.(KMOV)
If Joe Lieberman really told McCain that Purim was the Israeli Halloween that is so American it’s almost cute. Purim is compensation for not pulling out all the stops for Halloween, but I will have no costume for either.
A look at his Wikipedia bio convinced me that McCain has never been very detail oriented.
The mitzvah is to have a Purim seudah, or meal. Most of the special foods for Purim are of the pastry variety however.
I usually am interested in Brian Ross’ s stuff, but this is just cat poop.
shiksa: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shiksa
more like an A*PAC suck up, he already has the CUFI loons sewn up
More like dog poop, I think. Cat poop is normally buried.
There’s NO buisness…like SHOW buisness…like NO buisness…I know….
One of my acquaintances says that part of it is that McCain is a fighter jock and an adrenaline junkie. Policy isn’t exciting enough for him; neither is learning from the locals before shooting off his mouth.
I got an e-mail this morning from the National Jewish Democratic Council (I am not Jewish but I have supported many things they work for) and they are NOT buying what McCain is selling. Not at all.
CNN reporting a McCain aide fired for distributing Obama/Wright videos…
Afternoon,Christy and everyone…
My thoughts exactly.
It.does.not.matter.
If Dubya’s blotter sheet and Kerry’s war record were legitimate targets of interest for the MSM in ‘04, it seems timely to review St. John’s military record and time in the Senate.
I’m anguished that he was shot down and endured six years of torture as a POW. But twenty-eight medals in twenty combat air hours? Rickenbacker and von Richthofen must be laughing in their graves. What’s leaked so far suggests that his peace time naval experience is eerily similar to all of Dubya’s: his lineage made him a legacy and allowed him to skirt normal performance requirements.
His foreign policy expertise? It ought to be comprised of more than his aides converting dollars into pesos in order to pay his domestic help. And let’s take a long, close look at his lobbyist relations, and the legion of “volunteer” lobbyists running his campaign. Odds are “volunteering” is new neocon code for “deferred compensation”.
Politico said that he was suspended and did not say for how long.
I found the “schedule” an intereting read. Read a few months, picked at random; it took a lot of physical endurance to keep that pace for eight years.
Google failed me.
Love the song selection, Redd.
We Won’t Get Fooled Again!!!!!
Rock on.
This evidence in this post actually suggests something different. He actually seems not to just be another A*P*C suck-up. If he were, he’d hew to their talking points better. He actually seems inclined towards independent mindedness, but is disastrously ignorant and impulsive.
ya knowww…..
there I thought this was gonna be a youtube of britney’s butt, but nooOOOOOooooo
Suspended is probably what happened. I was only half listening.
It’s a gal; McCain’s a guy.
Used “actually” too much there…
The MSM will probably focus on what a good guy McCain is and how quickly he addressed the problem.
it’s over at TPM
IT should not matter, but it is exactly what is to be expected, day after day, so long as there is a Clinton at the top of the national news. The Clintons have yet to deal directly with this stuff so it won’t stop. Ignoring it has failed. If they don’t stop it now, it will be the stuff that decides the election and probably leads to Pres. McCain with a Republican House and Senate.
And then play the tape, again.
Besides ignorance and impulsiveness McCain can’t restrain anger, or, as they so delicately put it, he’s “clearly vexed”.
His buttons are waiting to be pressed.
Interesting. I do respect the fact that he was able to gain the nomination without going negative or using kitchen sink tactics.
He didn’t have to; he had a lot of surrogates like Huckabee doing so for him.
Awesome video, Christy! The Who at their peak had few peers.
Interesting take on what to do if the Dem contest goes all the way to the Convention:
http://ruralvotes.com/thefield/?p=917
Still don’t think it’s going to come to that, and we’ll all be able to turn our sights on CrazyTrain soon. Wouldn’t that be nice?
News is NOT entertainment. It is propaganda either by omission or commission. We should not be surprised that MSM supports the administration. It represents large accumulations of capital. One thing about those boys is they never have enough money. They, whether they be big Pharma, big agriculture, big finance, or big media will not change any time soon. It is foolish to wait on them. We need alternatives.
Yees, I noe vut it is. I was playing with the Orlando-like interchangeability of the roles played by McCain and Lieberman, and dissing McCain for making such gaffes when he has the oh-so-publicly Jewish Lieberman as a key aide. (I’m not dissing a religion, merely Holy Joe’s manners and politics.)
Bush = War = Recession = McCain
.
believe that is why those cheek pouches are full of xanax ;)
One thing that can be said about Richard Mellon-Scaife is that he is persistent. His attack organization “Judicial Watch”, is now suing to get Hillary’s phone records. There latest spin is that the “schedule” exposes Hillary as Bill’s co-President!!!
more dumbassery – why would they want to help her make the case she has so much exec office experience ?
Now I get it. As Blue Texan asked, “Will McCain have Lieberman next to him at 3:00 a.m.?”
“His buttons are waiting to be pressed.”
Oh, I’m waiting for that day. I’m hoping it comes during the first debate with the Dem candidate where McCain turns to Hil or Barry, jabs his finger in the air and yells, “You little jerk, you don’t know what the fuck you’re talking about!”
And then stunned silence across the country.
Why would Bill be saying all of those supportive things about McBush…makes you wonder what they’re up to…if anything.
OT
Good program now on CSPAN2. British journalist wrote book called Flat Earth News, talking about how bad the press is. Just started.
On topic really,
CSPAN 1 is rerunning a panel discussion with international journalists on the quality of reporting, Nick Davies wrote the book Flat Earth News
Why does the MSM, McBush amd Liebermom hate America???
Reminder that John Edwards is scheduled for the Tonight Show tonight.
http://www.nbc.com/The_Tonight…../calendar/
Perhaps he’ll be making an announcement?
I owe you a coke eCAHN!
They don’t want to run against BHO.
I don’t think Huckabee went negative. Remember he was going to and then decided not to air the add. Romney went negative and it backfired on him.
i wrote this to abc news yesterday when i saw the tacky brian ross article—
This is my last straw with ABC. Because of your article titled/paraphrased– ”Hillary
Clinton in White House on ’Stained Blue Dress’ Day”, I am
now going to call your network
ABC-Anything But Content
I am appalled in too many ways to articulate, from the
title, from the article, to why is this news? so, I’ll leave it
at that, for now…..
You have turned into The National Enquirer, in a time
when there are so many things affecting our populace
and the world, and this is what you choose to print.
Appalling, did I say that already?
When I do get my words back in order, you can bet I’ll
be writing a few letters about this.
I tried to register to comment, but you ask for a
birthdate, noone in their right mind would give that
information in this new era of file breaches. Most sites
just ask for email, that’s enough verification.

It’s the massive accumulation that makes it harder and harder for MSM to disregard the McCain cluelessness. The information builds and builds and the netwoots take control. MSM may control the gross-reach but netroots control the substance. The longer they ignore reporting on McCain’s ignorance the better it is for blogs to get the word out.
My favorite part is McCain sending Bill Crystal to negotiate between the Israelis and Palestinians. I fell over laughing. Send the bigot’s bigot out to negotiate bigotry. McCain is dazed and unable to think clearly. Someone take his driver’s license away! I don’t mean to impugn McCain’s intelligence because I don’t think he has any intelligence to impugn.
One thing McCain makes clear the longer he’s out there making one stupid remark and the other, is that he is a deliberate choice for those who will truly be in power. Who do you think will be the powerbrokers that run the country, by name please?
One thing McCain makes clear the longer he’s out there making one stupid remark after the other, is that he is a deliberate choice for those who will truly be in power. Who do you think will be the powerbrokers that run the country, by name please? Notice all the NeoCons who appear on his list.
Richard has been on a quest to destroy Bill and Hillary for 20 years. Hillary is the evil woman pulling the strings? Who knows how he thinks. The “no exec experience” is the meme of the anti-Hillary Dems….I don’t think the tea and cookie “puff butt” first lady is a Thug talking point..I think their “thing” is that Hillary is “Lucretia Borgia”…. be very affraid.
Holding out my glass. Just pour it in.
Our cable provider Comcast only carries CSpan one these days damn it – would love to catch the author of Flat Earth News but I so appreciate your head’s up.
I hate comcast. Censorship much?
Can’t they get her phone records from the NSA?
it is CSPAN 1
You mean the Huckabee ad that wound up being played on all the news programs with free publicity and air time because he “decided not to run it?” that negative ad?
Lol, just now watching the video at the top.
Me and Pete Townsend could have been twins when I was that age.
I have had people stop me on the street and tell me that.
What was jarring about the proposal to send Bill Kristol was that it was such a shameless stab at pandering incongruously placed next to proposals of people like Zinni and Baker, who are anathema to Israelis. He just doesn’t understand the context of any of this.
I think you mean Billy Kristol (neo-con’s neo-con) rather than Bill Crystal (actor comedian and fan of the fucking Yankees)
We share your contempt for Comcast dear Mary.
I got mistaken for Eric Rudolph a lot after the Olymipc Park bombing in Atlanta.
Not so nice, eh?
McCain might have had better luck were he to send Billy Crystal; both sides might laugh at the same time. Sending William Kristol to such negotiations would be like sending Bush to mediate a dispute between the ACLU and Dick Cheney.
Not so much.
Too bad they didn’t know who Eric Rudolph was at the time, might ahve saved the life of a Birmingham, AL cop.
Do you mean Richard Jewel?
Hey gang — am going to just have a quick howdy here. It’s The Peanut’s birthday today (she’s five — can you believe it?!?). I finally have a few minutes to sit and catch my breath. How is everyone today?
He was a bad person but rather cute. :)
I knew you would catch that, brendan. It was so stunningly inane, I sat there and read it three times before I realized it was, indeed, exactly what McCain said.
Happy Birthday to the Peanut. What a great age – have fun !
obama on larry king tonight, in case it hasn’t been mentioned
and once again, am posting new favorite website…….is political contributions lists since 1978…..easy to use…they have categories, politicos, media, business, celebrity, etc. or search..i’ve been pulling up names as they come up on the news, and as i think of them……and it’s very interesting where some people used to work…….is fascinating website.
lurita doan was interesting, she has deep pockets that were later filled by bush, and so was dan senor-former?iraq cpa spokesman-cambell brown’s husband. guess what? he used to be vp of the carlyle group, small world, huh?
and you can pull up people by zip code, too…….which i did. there’s a few closet republicans around here.
i’m tellin’ ya, it’s an education.

This is happening more and more. When I lived in Sacramento County last year, I woke up one morning to listen to C-SPAN2. Instead I had some raging preacher sending sinners, like me, to hell, unless I send him money.
I was at our family home in Reno which has all (and more than all) channels and there was no more C-SPAN2. I just received a notice from my cable company that they will be adding and remove some channels from my service. I need to call them.
Why is C-SPAN2 being deleted from cable? Any ideas.
Best wishes, and lot’s of fun for the Peanut.
Thanks Christy for all you do. Doing well, thanks.
Nope. Not right after the Olympics, but a couple of years later. Especially after I moved to Atlanta.
Slip of the fingers. Kristol, I meant.
Hippo Birdies Peanut!!!
Maybe..*g* but suing for the WH phone logs is probably a better way to go…I am not sure what they are trying to prove, Hillary has not denied that she was very involved in Bill’s Presidency. It might have to do with she is a “bad person” because she wasn’t a “proper” First Lady. In AR, one “knock” on Hillary was that she was a bad mother because she was the wage earner and Bill did a lot of the child care. Who knows what goes on in these wackos brains.
McCain: “It’s very clear that I have a lot of experience in Iraq.”
Why corruption at the top is so damaging; it’s ripples never stop. With the best will, it will take a decade to rebuild the DOJ. It will take longer to “right” the federal judiciary: re-staffing it with less radical choices isn’t enough to reverse the effects of the decisions they’ll have made while in office. Which is why judicial nominees and seeding the bureaucracy with Cheneyites were such high priorities for Bush. Something the Dems need to think about very hard.
I get a lot of ‘you look like Condi Rice’. My answer.
“Um, no thanks. I’m not as much of a pushover as she is.”
Happy Birthday to the Peanut!!
Happy Birthday PEANUT!!
happy birthday to the peanut and maaaaaaanyyyyy mooooooooooorrrre!
oh, the ’i’m five’ birthday is so much fun! they ’get’ the whole thing!
i know your family will have a blast!
Steve @ 55 said:
Maybe the plan is to say she can’t run for prez, she’s already had her two terms?
Happy Birthday to The Peanut!
For that my standard answer would be is that thanks, but I am not a war criminal.
Happy Birthday, Peanut! Does this include a party with all the works? Bet Mom has something wonderful in mind.
Okay everybody, ready? Let’s all sing “Happy Birthday” to the Peanut (in thousand part harmony!) A-one, and a-two…
*grins* Very true. I”m also a helluva lot younger than she is. (at this point i can’t remember how old she is, just that she has at least 10 years on me.)
busted at 77—-then i’m in love with you. really.
Didn’t mean to be be snippy. Yes, Holy Joe and Mccain seem joined at the, uh, hip, which makes McCain’s repeated gaffes purposeful obfuscations – the suggestion made by EW, Greenwald and Horton, or tells us that Holy Joe is as smart as McCain.
I miss Lawrence Welk.
We have a princess castle cake, balloons and lots of decorations hanging all over the house and we’re ordering the birthday girl’s favorite for dinner — pizza. (Yay, tired mom from her TBA trip doesn’t have to cook! Woo hoo!) Friends of ours are coming over to celebrate with us this evening. :)
And on the posting topic, how lovely that CNN et al are wringing their hands in faux concern whether the Rev Wright controversy will continue to dog Obama. Said as Larry Elder is literally panting to say, oh, yes, it will!!!!
I’m realizing late that John Stewart may have smashed Crossfire with that scathing appearance, but all the little pieces simply morphed into their own institutionalized Crossfire clones across the landscape of cable teevee.
Pox on ‘em all.
Now that’s what I call a great kids party!
Thank you, Christy.
I was wondering if any of the bigger, mainstream left blogosphere folks would highlight this. Hillary is a Democrat, and the netroots loses its way when we forget that we must counter the idiotic treatment of Democrats in the mainstream media.
Geez, I just flipped John Burns (NYT) from “solid citizen” into “flake” column. Not only does he thing the press in first world countries is terrific, he’s now defending NYT coverage of WMDs.
Tell peanut HJAPPY birthday!!!
It is my youngest ones 21 B-Day so
I guess happy b-day to celebrating today!!! :>)
Lieberman will be on one side of the bed, McCain in the middle and Lyndsay Graham on the side with the phone on the nightstand.
What a Mom.
A Birthday ?
ya mean for this Peanut ?!!?
this is my all time favorite FDL pic and today is as good a reason as any to re post it
Happy Birthday Fiona !
he did say he was bureau chief in Baghdad for a year before the war, so he’s responsible for a chunk of the reporting
My peanut, who will be five in November, is calling me to watch the “Aristocats” for the umpteenth time.We have 3 cats and one kitten, so now she thinks she should get one every birthday*g*
Beyond that, she’s a human being. The way that the press seems to think it is more than alright to sniff around her panty drawer or hold up what had to be one of the most painful things she’s ever had to survive and shake it around in her face in a sort of “ha ha” gesture…and that we won’t notice their crass, unfeeling behavior is beyond me.
Really, I just sat there reading this and thinking “why do they think it is any of our fucking business — of course the trip to the Vineyard was TBA — jeebus, he’s lucky she didn’t run over him with a car.” But, again, that’s not really my business either, now is it? There are lines that ought to be drawn — and one of them is that you leave the person who was not behaving badly the hell out of the discussion instead of waving it in their face every chance you get.
But then, my parents taught me some manners and compassion.
Happy Birthday to the nahantling!
Happy birthday Peanut!
MiniRieszette’s 20th birthday is tomorrow!
Best to you, Christy, and Happy Birthday to the Peanut (blows party horn)!
Cutting through the chaff, why would ABC do this story? It’s not as if there are not Bright Shiny Objects aplenty from which to choose.
I get really mad at the MSM for doing this — EXCEPT they wouldn’t do it if it didn’t get viewers/ratings. Just like push polling (”If you knew John McCain had a black love child, would you be more or less likely to vote for him?”) If I received such a phone call, I would cuss the caller out, and then hang up in his ear. As I am sure you all would do. And the 10-year-old Monica stories? Click! Teevee off. Yet, they wouldn’t do this (the push pollers, or the teevee networks) if it didn’t work.
WHEN ARE AMERICANS GOING TO GROW UP? And what will grow them up? Having no health care, no job, losing their homes, on and on … nothing seems to GET to them. It seems that in all their misery, they can only lash out at others. Sick.
Awwwwwww….I love that picture. Thanks for the repost, cbl. Was just playing with Kobe at Jane’s house on Sunday…
It’s more than self-serving. He actually believes what he says, which means he’s completely unaware of what alternatives were available and how easy (with a little work)it was to know which “side” was accurate, in real time. I find that appalling.
Happy Birthday to Peanut! Its good to be five and not have to worry about what the Republicans have done to our country.
Manners – a rare thing these days.
Because it is moist, hot and tacky. Perfect for making a dent in the boredom of most Americans’ lives.
The Peanut is now asking me every ten minutes if she can open her presents yet. It is gonna be a long, long hour and a half until we open them… *g*
Happy birthday, Peanut.
My 2-year old keeps asking for Santa. It’s gonna be a long 9 months.
Oh man…you win. Erm…lose.
For some reason, on birthdays I always think of Bob Dylan:
“I was so much older then, I’m younger than that now.”
You wrote
“He’s passed the Commander in Chief threshold,”
Depends on what the the word “passed” means — there ae many
I like the one that means “voided” as in excrete.
and my favourite
To serve as a barely acceptable substitute: The spare tire was nearly bald but would pass until we bought a new one.
One of my favorite lines.
A good gift for Peanut might be for all the Firedogs to send letters to the editor asking them to report some real news re: John McCain’s obvious cluelessness. He is unfamiliar with the term ‘67 borders. He is ignorant to the delicate sensibilities of our Isr*eli and Pal*stinian friends. He doesn’t know Al Q*ida from Shia. He is another non-detail guy like the idiot we have now. Do we really need another clueless President?
One of the most pithy lines in film, from Twelve Angry Men, has the watchmaker responding to one of many repeated, angry outbursts from the garage owner, demanding to know why he’s always so polite: “For the same reason you’re not; it’s the way I was brought up.”
Given all the plane crashes McCain had prior to the one that landed him captor status, just how did he come to get shot down, crashed, tripped over trees in Vietnam?
His crankiness and his obliviousness about very obviously basic foreign policy facts makes me suspicious about his health. The things that he has messed up on are not things that he hasn’t been aware of in the past…that would be impossible, but his defensiveness and some hesitance about these issues…well, I dunno.
Here are some of my favorite lines:
“I became more politically active after I had my own child — and realized that the long term consequences of allowing governmental behavior like torture or indefinite detention without a full and fair trial, politicizing the Department of Justice so that legal practice became subordinated to “the math” of the never-ending quest for electoral supremacy, the gutting of civil rights enforcement, the stacking of our court system with judges with a Federalist Society agenda to actively service, the disrespect for the legislative branch with Presidential signing statements that override our nations laws with the stroke of a pen…I could no longer look at my daughter’s tiny little fingers curled around my own and sit back and watch my nation submit to a President who sought unilateral executive fiat.”
We don’t but the NeoCon Repugs do. This is the only way they can apply one of their chief tenets, elite rule.
Thanks eCahn and Elliot for the Flat Earth linkie. Good show!
His whole philosophy seems to be: WHATEVER!
I do not want this man leading the country.
ditto that. I raise my kids to have at least a couple of manners and respect for others. I teach them how to behave in church, at weddings, funerals and yes, birthday parties. It means letting other people go first sometimes, even if it’s your turn, saying please and thank you and letting other people save face and just plain being nice and making someone’s day by giving them a smile.
What’s so funny about peace, love and understanding?
Sheesh, I’m not a Hilary fan, but I’ll stay out of her panty drawer, no problem. I don’t want to know if Bill wears boxers or briefs. And if a dude from the other political party dies, I’ll allow people to mourn without interruption. Same for vet who dies in a war I didn’t ask him to fight.
Shame on these pitbulls who didn’t learn respect for fellow human being, who didn’t learn that it makes them bigger and better people for knowing limits and boundaries.
/sheesh
I copied Christy’s speech post and pasted it into an email to my ex and my kids. My ex responded today that maybe he’ll start reading FDL. W00t!
Pardon my OT, but Student Walk-Out Against the War is going real strong through downtown Portland, OR right now. There are just tons of kids out there and I can see cops scrambling into action from my office window.
From the open publishing newswire: Over the past 5 years, the student movement has been growing in Portland. The youth of America are the ones who will feel the true scorns of the war, as we are the ones expected to pay off this debt, our education is being cut, and we are the ones fighting this war. On March 20th, at 11 AM hundreds of students city wide, and thousands nation wide will be walking out of school, directly resisting our planned day to day events. By walking out, students not only take a stand against the war, but also assert our own power as a community determined to enact change. Students are willing to disrupt our education for one day to take a stand against five years of mounting death tolls.
We as students also believe that anti-war efforts have been too moderate and passive to make a difference. This protest (starting at 1 PM by the elephant in the North Park Blocks) has not been registered by the city of Portland, as we do not wish to host a parade. We wish to start a movement that is no longer about feeling good about yourself, but making a change in the world. Patting yourselves on the back after marching in a permitted area is not likely to directly affect war profiteers or anything for that matter. This is why we feel it necessary to make this stride.
The press hounded Kerry with similar queries. It was not just the SwiftBoat 527 group that raised questions about and delegitimized Kerry’s military service. As the press lowered the bar with the treatment of this subject as it related to John Kerry, it must also scrutinize the military record of the current John seeking the nation’s highest office. They won’t do it unless we hammer them.
There are a couple of know-nothings on the panel, dontcha think? And they have high positions. No wonder the press is in such trouble.
And John Burns has clearly drunk the NYT Kool Ade, since his retirement savings are invested in the stock. Wow.
Oh, while I’m ranting about manners, may I add knowing how to give and accept an apology?
I need to apologize (belatedly) for a poo sling last week about HRC. re the GF gaffe. I went off and I’m sorry. Esp. after CHS asked us not to.
That’s the word – WHATEVER. It describes McCain’s attitude perfectly. Been trying to figure out what it was and now I know. Thanks
Thanks for the report! I was really heartened to see people in SF chained to Chevron offices and in the streets outside DiFi’s office downtown. Many people in Gitmo orange too. Thousands of people. and…press coverage.
With the new media, journalists are expected to write a breaking news story in 5 minutes!
It sounds like they are committed to civil disobedience. This brings a lot of attention to their cause. It is hard on the police to deal with a political protest. Many members of the community will become engaged if they want to or not.
Fantastic! We all need to do something every single day to spread the word about FDL and other alternatives to BigMedia. Without the control of the message machine, few Repubs would ever be elected, and Death and Destruction around the world would decrease substantially.
George W. Bush: My United States of Whatever
That’s the BBC! So you can imagine what it’s like at a news organization with a profit motive. And BTW, I have noticed the decline in quality at BBC. It’s almost not worth looking at anymore, except it has headlines on things happening in parts of the world that aren’t reported on here.
Oh thanks — that’s so sweet of you!
I agree, and I did not mean to imply that only Democrats are worthy of compassion. My point should have been that there has been a tendency to dehumanize Hillary lately.
In the more rough-and-tumble precincts of the left blogosphere, I had hoped this type of thing would be focused on, at the very least because these media memes must be countered.
and you can always start off with something ‘non-political’ – like Ian Welsh’s posts – several friends, even my Peanut were surprised by the quality – too many still think it’s all rants and flames by folks who simply “hate Bush”
Its whatever with a lot of stuff, but not with the war. McCain is gung-ho for the Iraq/Afghanistan deadly clusterfuck. He is a staunch ally of the Military Industrial/Media complex. He has continued to lie about the war’s successes like the rest of the Republican Peanut Gallery which includes his BFF’s Lieberlair and the closeted Lindsay Gayham. (Nothing wrong with being gay – plenty wrong with being a sanctimonious hypocrite.) McCain would surely continue to bankrupt the country to the benefit of Cheney/Bushco and their well-connected buddies. He is a corrupt and soulless creep with nary a concern about the lives of others.
McCain was shot down over Hanoi in 1967. Hannoi was heavily defended by Russian supplied SAM sites and the US was just coming online with the AGM-45 Shrike missle as a counter measure. With these weapons, being shot down was not necessary a funtion of pilot skill. I think McCain would be a terrible President, but trying to diminish his military record is not fair and bound to fail.
Puffing up John McCain, POW by Ted Ball on The Smirking Chimp:
ecahn and steve–the john burns thing….i was a huge fan of his, i liked him a lot.
i agree over past few years he has changed dramatically.
he used to be analytically critical, now is critically resigned.
worn out? maybe
but i think it is because they could no longer go out and get their own facts and stories, had to depend on someone to give it to them…….that dependence creates a different mindset and perception.
he even said a while while back, on charlie rose, how the process had changed, how he used to go and get his own info, and that that was no longer the case.
neutered, changes your behavior and how your brain works.

From wiki, on McCain’s flight history:
Well…
HRC kind of brought this on herself. She’s the one claiming “experience” gained in the WH, so she opened the door for this kind of review.
I’m not excusing the press for needlessly opening old wounds, but she walked right into that one.
“That’s kew.”
This is a most awesome song that we play in the car whenever we can. I always play the air cymbals.
Well the most relevant story to come out of releasing the schedules was the NAFTA connection, not the personal crap.
Oh, if I may add, I think it was also a maneuver to appear “transparent and open” by appearing to release “White House documents” and distract folks from the tax return issue???
tom65-i kinda see your logic,
kinda like in rome when the christians got eaten by the lions…….
well, you’re the one who said you were a christian!
so you got what was you knew was coming to you. /s
or getting blamed for being raped because you wore ’revealing’ clothes, in other words, a skirt and a top.
being told, it’s your fault, you shouldn’t have been dressed all girly like or he wouldn’t have raped you. /s
yeah, they left the door open, too.
there are plenty of ways that information can be used to show her experience or lack of, this was not about that, and you know it.
Happy Birthday to the Peanut.
I really think McCain is simply dumb as a post. Don’t forget he was at the bottom of his class at the Naval Academy. Not instantly picking up on what was meant by the ‘67 borders is just unforgivable.
Finally, someone on Glenn’s thread yesterday made a punaise-quality line:
McCain doesn’t know Shiite from Shinola.
While suggestive, I’d say that reflects as much the dangers of aggressive, low-level, naval air combat as much as McCain’s flying skills. I’d rather hear talented aviators evaluate his talent at air combat and command.
I can’t see faulting McCain for getting shot down over Hanoi. At least, unlike Bush, McCain had the guts to actually show up for duty and get in the plane.
Is anybody holding their breath waiting for the McCain adultery and marrying ‘up’ to get in politics put under the microscope?
I clicked on the Glenn link and read his well written piece in Salon. Then I noticed that the Taylor Marsh and TBogg links on his page were highlighted. Not knowing who Taylor Marsh was, I clicked on the link, read, and was appalled. I read all the comments, and was disgusted. There is nothing worse to a brown person, and I am one, than to see white folks not only play the victim, but second Feraro. Not only that, but Marsh and her sycopanths wonder when Hannitty and company are going to “pick up” on Obama’s “racism”. Ugh.
Hillary was livid not because of Monica Lewinski’s attention to Bill, but because it became public knowledge. You see, Gennifer Flowers was around for 7 years, but it wasn’t public until SHE (Flowers) made it public. Publication bothers Hillary, not the act itself.
