Barack Obama’s speech yesterday is receiving kudos from lots of folks today who only two days ago were ready to bring down his candidacy because he dared to listen to a pastor angry about America’s history. The turnaround is more than a tribute to Obama’s eloquence; it’s an acknowledgment that the man is capable of leading the country. If he can tackle the most difficult of race issues and force the media to raise the level of discourse with just one speech, then maybe, just maybe, he could lift the whole country.
It was a teaching moment for America, and the means Obama chose was to invite America to church, his church, to listen to Reverend Wright, and not just to the endless playing of selective clips on television:
In my first book, Dreams From My Father, I described the experience of my first service at Trinity:
"People began to shout, to rise from their seats and clap and cry out, a forceful wind carrying the reverend’s voice up into the rafters….And in that single note – hope! – I heard something else; at the foot of that cross, inside the thousands of churches across the city, I imagined the stories of ordinary black people merging with the stories of David and Goliath, Moses and Pharaoh, the Christians in the lion’s den, Ezekiel’s field of dry bones. Those stories – of survival, and freedom, and hope – became our story, my story; the blood that had spilled was our blood, the tears our tears; until this black church, on this bright day, seemed once more a vessel carrying the story of a people into future generations and into a larger world. Our trials and triumphs became at once unique and universal, black and more than black; in chronicling our journey, the stories and songs gave us a means to reclaim memories that we didn’t need to feel shame about…memories that all people might study and cherish – and with which we could start to rebuild."
That has been my experience at Trinity. Like other predominantly black churches across the country, Trinity embodies the black community in its entirety – the doctor and the welfare mom, the model student and the former gang-banger. Like other black churches, Trinity’s services are full of raucous laughter and sometimes bawdy humor. They are full of dancing, clapping, screaming and shouting that may seem jarring to the untrained ear. The church contains in full the kindness and cruelty, the fierce intelligence and the shocking ignorance, the struggles and successes, the love and yes, the bitterness and bias that make up the black experience in America.
And this helps explain, perhaps, my relationship with Reverend Wright. As imperfect as he may be, he has been like family to me. He strengthened my faith, officiated my wedding, and baptized my children. Not once in my conversations with him have I heard him talk about any ethnic group in derogatory terms, or treat whites with whom he interacted with anything but courtesy and respect. He contains within him the contradictions – the good and the bad – of the community that he has served diligently for so many years.
I can no more disown him than I can disown the black community. I can no more disown him than I can my white grandmother – a woman who helped raise me, a woman who sacrificed again and again for me, a woman who loves me as much as she loves anything in this world, but a woman who once confessed her fear of black men who passed by her on the street, and who on more than one occasion has uttered racial or ethnic stereotypes that made me cringe.
These people are a part of me. And they are a part of America, this country that I love.
After chiding right wing talking heads for building careers on bogus claims "while dismissing legitimate discussions of racial injustice and inequality," Obama then directly challenged the media (and the voters) to refocus on what’s important in people’s lives. And he did it by proclaiming what some might recognize as a progressive agenda:
For we have a choice in this country. We can accept a politics that breeds division, and conflict, and cynicism. We can tackle race only as spectacle – as we did in the OJ trial – or in the wake of tragedy, as we did in the aftermath of Katrina – or as fodder for the nightly news. We can play Reverend Wright’s sermons on every channel, every day and talk about them from now until the election, and make the only question in this campaign whether or not the American people think that I somehow believe or sympathize with his most offensive words. We can pounce on some gaffe by a Hillary supporter as evidence that she’s playing the race card, or we can speculate on whether white men will all flock to John McCain in the general election regardless of his policies.
We can do that.
But if we do, I can tell you that in the next election, we’ll be talking about some other distraction. And then another one. And then another one. And nothing will change.
That is one option. Or, at this moment, in this election, we can come together and say, "Not this time." This time we want to talk about the crumbling schools that are stealing the future of black children and white children and Asian children and Hispanic children and Native American children. This time we want to reject the cynicism that tells us that these kids can’t learn; that those kids who don’t look like us are somebody else’s problem. The children of America are not those kids, they are our kids, and we will not let them fall behind in a 21st century economy. Not this time.
This time we want to talk about how the lines in the Emergency Room are filled with whites and blacks and Hispanics who do not have health care; who don’t have the power on their own to overcome the special interests in Washington, but who can take them on if we do it together.
This time we want to talk about the shuttered mills that once provided a decent life for men and women of every race, and the homes for sale that once belonged to Americans from every religion, every region, every walk of life. This time we want to talk about the fact that the real problem is not that someone who doesn’t look like you might take your job; it’s that the corporation you work for will ship it overseas for nothing more than a profit.
This time we want to talk about the men and women of every color and creed who serve together, and fight together, and bleed together under the same proud flag. We want to talk about how to bring them home from a war that never should’ve been authorized and never should’ve been waged, and we want to talk about how we’ll show our patriotism by caring for them, and their families, and giving them the benefits they have earned.
I don’t know if the country is willing to accept this man, ready to follow his leadership. He’s asking much more than the current crowd, who told us to go shopping, more than we’re used to. We’ll have to raise our game, a lot.

Dan Abrams last night accused sheik bin al BaraBlakcHusseinOsamaBama of “attacking the media.”
Caw!
I’m gonna make a not-too-wild guess that Dan Abrams didn’t bother to listen to more than 3-4 words of that incredible speech. His boss ought to make it required reading or fire the -ahem- bum.
Abrams ranted on about how “Obama’s strategy of attacking the media” was unwise. Like, how dare anyone criticize the MSM?
“criticize” = “attack”?
Thanks for the great post, Scarecrow.
Sunday morning, Kurtz’s indignation at Obama for pointing out the media will be epic.
Dan would rather play the stupid Youtube click over and over and try to analyze the implications of this, all the while portraying himself to be a pompous bigot.
Let’s see the wingnuts suck on that for a while.
Fine with me if he did. The media deserve to be attacked. They brought it on themselves.
Are you on spring break – no warping of minds today?
any idea where to see a replay of ‘bama’s live speech this am?
Obama, in 4 words: O Captain, My Captain!
‘Tis true. I don’t warp them next week either–I’ll be at a conference in Vancouver.
Best seafood in the world. Enjoy !
The media’s bread and butter is tied to perpetuating the Josef Goebbels brand of information dissemination. They’ve found an easy way to make a buck. If people are fed a daily diet of crap, and they have no way of learning that there is anything else to eat but crap, and they are too busy and too tired to realize there even exists anything else to eat but crap, I don’t see how it changes.
The power of propaganda is at at all time high in America’s history. It may very well bring down the country created by Jefferson, Franklin and Madison.
On a more optimistic note, Obama is an extraordinary candidate.
How dare Barack Obama criticize The General Electric Company.
No good things to life for you.
it’s a shame he’s giving so many important speeches so quickly. This one needs to be absorbed by the whole country — and most especially the punditocracy & the rest of the MSM.
Mr. Obama’s speech was excellent. He demanded of all Americans what we demand on this site: a sense of their own history, respect for each other’s views and hope. Plus a willingness to stop carping, pitch in and get our communal jobs done, in place of Bush-the-trust-fund-baby’s usual, “I’ve got mine, so screw you; but let me tell you why that’s good for you.”
Not everyone wants to hear that: the MSM “hoarse racers”; the please don’t make me think, I want to shout pundits; the greedy; but also the three-jobs-a-dayers, the weary and worn, and the I’ve been burned befores.
The good news is that the whole job doesn’t have to be done before the election. We just have to get ready for it. And the opposition has a big “Kick Me” sign on its back end, made up from its relentless pre-packaged lies, its gross incompetence and the biblical profligacy of George W. Bush and his neocons.
Most Americans know that; they and not Bush are living with the consequences of his failures. We’ll soon find out if they’re ready to hear it spoken out loud.
Certainly under Bush they haven’t been required to process sophisticated oratory. They’re out of practice.
Thinking people who aren’t simply bashing Obama because their candidate is teh awesome SHOULD be inspired by this.
Then again, thinking people would never have enabled the mess we’re in now.
I pray we’re up to the task.
A humdinger of a speech by Obama.
Abrams would do well to review his own tapes, and look in a mirror more often to do more than just spritz his hairdoo.
Video:
Barack Obama Philadelphia Speech on Race
Video quality not great, but the audio is fine.
Which one? I haven’t read today’s speech. Is the transcript anywhere yet?
I suspect that many of us will be surprised with the capacity of working class people of all races, religions and conditions to answer this call. As a union organizer and leader, I have had the opportunity to work closely with people of all races and with modest or sometimes little education. I have seen them confront serious challenges under tremendous stress and found that there is a humanity, courage and wisdom that they possess that is often overlooked by the media and the bosses. These working men and women, have a health dose of common sense and don’t turn away from conflict. They can be swayed by appeals to fear, or threat, or economic insecurity, since their economic situation is often so precarious, but they are giving and forgiving to the core. If they are given the opportunity to hear the portion of this speech that you cite (which is not being featured in the news coverage) many, if not most, will rise to the challenge. I have seen it. The worker who emerges from the crowd to lead during the union organizing drive against an oppressive and threatening boss. The woman who rises up against sexual harassment by a powerful and threatening supervisor or co-worker. The part-time single Mom who chooses to fight for health benefits at risk of her much needed job. These are the blue collar workers I have worked with and walked with. They are not dumb or stupid or undiscerning. They are wise and deep and world weary, but they hope. They will, like our parents, sacrifice all to ensure the future for their children. They share their dimes on Sunday to answer the call to feed the poor, and share their meal with a hungry stranger. They comfort the lost child and they believe deeply in each other. As I have grown to know them, I have renewed my faith in the America that I was told about as a child, but never saw. They are there and will listen, understand, and respond if we talk to them as adults and treat them with respect and dignity. Sen. Obama did that. I hope the word gets out.
Thank you Bilbo! (22)
Well, he did chastise them, in effect, by saying they succumb to “distractions,” both through issue avoidance (MSM) and deliberate evasion (right wing talk shows). And he offered them a choice.
I imagine that Truthout will have it later today, too.
This is a speech that will be anthologized and written about for a long, long time. It only makes sense that people are casting around for reasons to dismiss it — I am sure that was true of King’s speeches, too. But I do wish every Democrat would watch it through and decide for themselves if this is an opportunity we can afford to miss. Here’s a link: http://www.youtube.com/user/BarackObamadotcom
Scarecrow!
It is just possible that America has been offered the opportunity to step back and examine itself, its motivatiions and its ‘reality’.
We, the people of the United States have, apparently, a chance to use our meager ‘power’ wisely, to actually influence the direction of history; to deliberately choose life over death and justice over the worst aspects of greed, inhumanity and other extreme social pathologies.
We can choose to step back from a new Dark Age, of which the past seven-plus years are but a prelude, and begin to set the world stage for the possibility, however slim or unlikely, of a world-wide ‘Renaissance’.
Our survival, our children’s future and the earth’s capacity to support human life could very well depend upon whom we ‘choose’ and what WE ‘do’.
Seize the day! you readers of dead poets. You have nothing to lose but your cynicism, though I recommend you keep it in your back pocket. I think it was Hillel who described it well: a toiler in the field, having heard a messiah had arrived, said let there be praise, but finished plowing his field before dropping everything to follow him.
If you click on the first link — “speech today,” it takes you to the Obama site where they have both the video and the full printout.
Reading across the blogosphere, listening to the nattering anchors on CNN and MSNBC, who rarely touched the substance of Obama’s speech and left it for political horse race prognastication nonsense, I am left with the sinking feeling that even a speech that so clearly reflects the “he who is without sin cast the first stone,” and “blessed are the peacemakers” element of Christianity, not to mention appeals to the best angels of the American political vision, speaking honestly and openly–that is, taking down the curtain and looking at our troubled racial divisions, even to the point of examining the foibles of his own people–black and white–in our jaundiced devil take the hindmost national mindset has fallen on deaf ears.
And for the first time, I also fear for Senator Obama’s life; history paints a clear picture of what has befallen from the time of Socrates the way in which powerful men who speak the truth have been treated.
I didn’t vote for Obama in the Primary. I’ve been trying to warm up to him for a while. He went a long way to that end for me yesterday.
thanks bilbo@22!
Carpe Diem!!
All I an say amidst the euphoria of Obama’s ‘excellent’ speech, opinion on this is varied, is that you really need to read: The Audacity of Hope to learn how the august Senator feels about:
Democrats.
Unions.
The Progressive movement and it’s antecedents.
For a guy who is so ‘progressive’ he uses a whole lot of right wing memes. Sorry to ‘rain on the parade’ but one speech ain’t gonna change the man’s whole outlook.
Read the book.
plainbrown and all — paragraphs, paragraphs!
Well said about working people. Saw too much concernus trollus amongst the Very Important Pundits last night about whether “working people” would be reached by the speech. To them I say shame on you for your discriminatory bigoted atty-tood about persons of blue collar.
Shame also on the ilk of Abrams, who enabled the mess we’re in and can damned well own their own share of the blame and make it better, perfected…working toward a more perfect union.
And shame on the Usual Suspects–need we name them? Oh, let’s. Buchanan, Scarborough, Elder, Faux News, Limpballs….. they own their share of the blame too for their race baiting and deriding and spinning away from the real issues people want to talk about as adults.
That’s exactly how I saw the speech. Obama and his people have figured out that the problem with this country isn’t the thuglicans, vile as they are, but the corporate press, which has done its best to trivialize American politics, and as a result creating the ’sheeple.’ Is it any surprise that the media including the Nice Polite Republicans come out swinging against our academic and professional elite? Think of the reception they just gave Joe Stiglitz’s report on the costs of the Iraq War? Or the way they have maintained an almost perfect silence on Al Gore, especially after he got the Nobel.
Obama is taking it to the real opposition to democracy in this country. He’s also done it very shrewdly, by playing the ‘you are just givng us distraction’ card, which is right on the mark.
When and if this terrible episode of our history is finally over, perhaps a generation from now, a great historian will study the internal records of the great media conglomerates. That study should be carried out at the operational level — where the producers are. It’s the producers and their media consultants that have created the focus-group media. Show news that sells. It’s not accidental, comrades, that we get so many missing white woman stories. Their marketing people have told them that’s what sells ads.
Obama has figured this all out. The thugs will go after him, but as long as he doesn’t openly threaten media bottom lines, they will play him gingerly.
I didn’t have a chance to vote for him or anyone else in the primary: I live in Michigan.
And I heard on NPR yesterday that he wants to prevent me from having a second chance at a primary– he wants to disenfranchise us Michiganders. Hillary wants to give us a second chance.
I’ll go with Hil.
The more the better.
And someone upthread bemoans the fact that incredible speeches are coming to quickly from Obama?
There’s a problem???!?
So save them up and replay them and fwd them to every corner of this poor bruised country, publish them in book form, …
Seconded.
I’m not looking for a messiah, and don’t suggest Obama is one. I’ll settle for an intelligent, principled adult who actually gives a damn. If he/she can inspire others to grab an oar and help row towards something worthwhile, all the better.
People choose their god and their god is a reflection of their inner self.
It doesn’t much matter to me what organized religion it is, by it’s nature, it dwells on violence, cruelty, hate and vengeance by practically all peoples. I’ve observed this in other cultures not just Western religions. Organized religion spirals downward. No matter how it starts out, in a heartbeat, it can spiral downward.
More harm has been done over the centuries in the name of religion or belief than anything else I know. It’s been a major catalyst for war, executions, burning at the stake, nailing to a cross, torture and discrimination and anything else negative you can come up with.
And, when organized religion is caught in its vile act, it makes excuses and goes into denial. Obama had no choice but to address this firestorm since it surrounded him. I, personally, am not inspired by any religious speeches in defense or opposition. I just endure them until we can move on to issues that require solutions. Organized religion is just an evil we endure. Civilization has advanced in spite of it.
My condemnation of organized religion is not to be confused with an individual’s spirituality. This is separate from another’s belief and the relationship an individual has with a higher entity (or whatever one chooses to describe this). It is greater than our self.
It is time to demand we spend time on issues, policies and solutions. I am so bored with the subject of organized religion and everyone who is offended because of some comment made by another.
Obama’s candidacy poses the greatest threat to the prevailing government “for the few, by the few” status quo in DC. Corporate America likes pulling the strings in Washington. They have “captured” the regulatory agencies, and dominate tax, trade, contracting, and other policies. (It’s my view that Big Oil authored the conquest mission in Iraq — still short of an Iraqi-ratified “oil law” and some enduring “status of forces agreement” in order to be “accomplished.”)
Government “by the People?”
The vested interests of corporate-rule closed ranks to quash Dean’s candidacy (the “scream” tape), and they are attempting to do the same thing to Obama (the “aggravated preacher” tapes).
The Penn/Clinton, Black/McCain tag-team, in cahoots with the whole right-wing/corporate echo chamber, will do everything and anything they can to prevent Barack Obama from leading the American people to real change.
Posted this earlier, but Patrick Cockburn in today’s Independent.co.uk describes both the MSM’s as well as Bush’s legacy from the past seven years:
Obama isn’t disenfranchising you. Let’s not be disingenuous. You brought this on yourselves, Michiganders.
I have had the same terrible sense of dread for 24 hours now. The man has the power to unite the masses. There are many who would like to extinguish that, and keep us all separate and fighting amongst ourselves rather than crashing the gate.
But have you also noticed that the story is no longer exclusively the endless replaying of Wright video; now all but Fox News know they have to put than in context and mention Obama’s speech. They can’t get away with “crazy, unpatriotic pastor.” I think that’s a plus.
I’m hoping Obama will do something similar in a speech today on Iraq. The media’s focus on the Wright video was, IMO, having a narrowing effect on how much any candidate could question America’s foreign policy without being labeled unpatriotic. I think that was as great a danger to Dems and the fall campaign as the race issue was becoming for Obama.
I’m sorry to hear that. I voted for her in the California primary. I know I am going to vote for the nominee whomever that is so keeping an open mind. I understand your frustration. I register people to vote and am always surprised by the people who say they don’t want to register and don’t vote because they don’t think it makes a difference. What would it be like if we weren’t allowed to vote…
Speeches from an American Campaign Trail….
required reading for every American.
hey, it’s spring migration season…flocks of birds, gaggles of geese, now we have a tsunami of speeches.
What’s not to love.
We also see that essentially decency when they serve on juries.
heh.. now, if i could just learn to spell “too”, things would be perfect. *g*
I think it is a bit early to determine what the political impact of this speech will be.
As we move forward through the Democratic primary process, it seems to me, somewhat ironically, that the key demographic group will be white male voters. So far, in most states, their vote has been evenly split between Obama and Clinton.
Over the several days the Wright tapes were being endlessly played by the media, it appeared this group was sliding, rather markedly, towards Clinton. In my view, the political prosperity of this speech will depend on what this group heard and if as a result the trend towards Clinton abates.
Not my take at all.
Cmon Reisz,
That is a bit over the top and unfair to place the blame soley on him for disenfranchising you. The state of Michigan and the DNC don’t earn any of your ire?
When the self appointed Chihuahua of Justice yips, no one of any consequence listens.
The problem with Obama’s speeches is that the media don’t do substance.
This was also a speech to disabuse Clinton of the notion that she can call for a superdelegate intervention because of the supposedly disqualifying affiliation with Wright. Not that Clinton won’t try, but there’ll at least be a little sheepishness on her part and the media’s.
Other than that, the political astuteness and subtlety was amazing. It was very perceptive about how much whites are willing to hear, got in a discussion of white middle class economic concerns, and, of course, it can never hurt to kiss Israel’s ass.
I should probably repeat that even though a given post may focus on what Obama has said, or what Clinton has said (e.g., she had an important speech on Iraq last week), it’s not my intent (or FDL policy) to endorse or reject either candidate.
So don’t turn this into an Hillary vs Obama thread. If, however, folks see Hillary Clinton making analogous pleas to the media — my focus here — bring them forward. They should be acknowledged.
Scarecrow!
Great point about teachable moment. I hope we have more like this.
And since a few of us are diem carpe-ing: Illegitimi non carborundum.
I don’t blame Obama, Riesz. I more blame the idiot party elders that thought it was such a good idea to move it forward this year and get rightly penalized for it. Now we’ve been blocked by the Rethugs in our own State senate, so any hope of a possible and legal by DNC rules re-do has been shot down.
Obama had NOTHING to do with those decisions. More like they were playing politics and lost, badly. My vote will still be there in the GE. But i’m going to call the MDP elders on their idiocy and forgetting that the MI Rethug party won’t let us do anything helpful party wise if they can POSSIBLY help it.
Amen.
surely we can help them overcome that short-sighted, small-minded, lazy, self-serving, mean-spirited….
oh well. ya’ know?
The virtue of this speech is that it is addressed to them in part and will hopefully make them more squeamish about pounding on this Wright thing. It also tickles the vestigial consciences of a lot of them.
I’m seeing a lot of coverage in the major papers, but it would be interesting to know what folks are seeing in their local papers and/or tv stations. YOu can’t do too much in 30 seconds or less.
morning! have you noticed that we keep getting the SAME friggin soundbites from the speech … I’m getting really tired of speeches being boiled down to about 2 15 second sound bites….blech!
Man o man, that’s exactly where I’m at. And you did it in only 24 words.
Intelligent, principled, and gives a damn. Who ever thought that would be asking a lot of a presidential candidate?
You have just ‘nailed’ the ‘universal and timeless truth’ about ‘organized religions’ worldwide and through all our collective attempts to ‘own’ the truth before which all must bow and divest themselves of wit and reason…
Well done!
Yeah but Obama has not agreed to a do-over and Hillary has. Now I realize it’s a political calculation– Obama knows Hillary is favored in Michigan. But I know if the shoe was on the other foot the Obama supporters would be pressing the point for all it’s worth. Am I right?
The speech was front-page in today’s Akron Beacon Journal.
You left out most qualified.
OK. Who keeps sending me all that Jesus spam? Fess up!!!
Don’t discount other the impact on other ethnic groups. Male white voters aren’t the only voting block with racist inclinations. The Latino and various Asian constituents are an important swing vote consideration in the Democratic equation, and perhaps even the general election in November.
And, the beauty of the Unifying concept is that all these factions can and should be analyzed in terms of “speech impact” as a whole. Where the sum total of these humans affected by the promise and purpose projected by Barack Obama in his speech? If the answer is yes, then there is hope for a more perfect union. And the school house rock group from the shadowy Saturday mornings of my childhood will have to update their song. I’m looking forward to that!
NPR is certainly selective in many of the reports that are aired. A number of Democratic voters voted for a gooper in protest of clinton2. These voters should be allowed to vote in a re-do, if there is one, so in this instance I believe BO is correct. Let us not forget that the clinton2 organization was instrumental in creating this mess before the primaries began and she agreed to the ground rules at the outset. Just because the coronation was derailed is no reason to change the rules after the game is played.
(love those mixed metaphors)
I’ll support the Democratic nominee for President, but I don’t see either of the two remaining candidates proposing legislation that would get corporate money out of our elections.
The greatest threat imho to corporate government is corporate government. Bear Stearns was trading at $85/share back in February. It’s now worth $2/share. If Bear Stearns is worth $2/share, what are the rest of the Wall Street banks worth? As a consequence of Bear Stearns, well educated realize their 401(k)’s are at risk. Can they send their kids to college? Will they be able to afford to retire?
By the by, has anyone called out the media yet for claiming that most of Obama’s supporters are black? This is a gross distortion of the Mississippi primary statistic where most black democrats voted for Obama. There were white MS dems who voted for him too. There are white voters elsewhere who are voting for him.
I wish wingnuts would stop saying that only black voters are voting for him. That is a completely misleading thing to say. And the media deserves to be slapped around.
i would think that would be risky business considering the black populace sees disenfranchisement has a historic and epic issue for them.
You may indeed have heard that report on NPR, but that is just a sad commentary on NPR’s veracity these days. The only thing which the Obama campaign is opposed to in a re-vote for MI is dis-enfranchising those Democrats and Independents who might have voted in the Republican primary in January. People were told in January that the Democratic primary would not count. Obama and Edwards had their names removed from the MI ballot, but Clinton did not. All the candidates had signed a pledge that the MI January primary would not count. Now, if there is to be a re-vote, why penalize those Democrats and Independents who did not want to vote in a supposedly meaningless exercise, but decide to have an effect in the Republican primary?
It seems to me to be stacking the deck in an MI re-vote to disenfranchise those who did not want to vote for Clinton or uncommitted but equally unseatable delegates in the first round.
Lastly, my reading indicates that it is more the divided MI state legislature which is the major roadblock, and not the Obama campaign.
Sorry, should have been:
well educated Republicans realize their 401(k)’s are at risk
Absolutely agree. Obama is not the messiah, or JFK, or MLK or FDR. He’s Obama and this is 2008. The Hillel story is an analogy to suggest the following:
a) We’ve been desperately short of leadership for years.
b) Bush has debased the idea of leadership down to his own level of incompetence. Just as his DOJ has debased notions of justice, his actions have debased the religious feelings he ascribes to, and his words have debased the language of statutes, government and democracy.
c) It’s been a long time since we’ve had articulate, intelligent leadership that’s honestly described the problems we face and the tools we have to face them with.
We need hope; we also need realistic expectations.
And since the media utterly controls what most Americans hear, read, and even think, this powerful speech won’t even be heard by the people who might be most moved by it. De-monopolizing the media is essential if democracy in this country is not to go the way of the buffalo.
And why would that be? :)
You mean, politicians would do something political!!!!!????? Say it ain’t so?
The man is intelligent, not a saint.
What I find interesting is how Obama has captured center stage. McCain is off exploring his dementia in Iraq. Who knows what Clinton is doing? The Wright controversy put the spotlight on Obama but rather than being a negative and despite the efforts of a venal media and a rabid right wing it is quickly turning into a defining moment in the campaign and in our discourse.
No, because the point is that the DNC made the rules and that is where my anger is aimed. From reading the paper this morning, the re-vote did NOT have universal support among the michigan caucus and without that it could not have gone forward. You support Hillary and fantastic, great nothing is wrong with that but to blame obama for something that he is not responisble for creating in the first place is unfair and disingenous.
Yeah, I voted for Huckleberry Hound because Edwards wasn’t on the ballot. But I would appreciate a do-over. And I admit that if Obama was favored to win a do-over she wouldn’t want it either. But I know if that was the case the Obama ‘dogs would be flogging it for all it’s worth. It’s kitchen sink time, pups!
hi! welcome to my mid day coffee break!
I have those tapes…government rock, math rock (figure 8 is 4+4) Great memories for me as that is how I memorized the preamble to the constitution
Hello, just came from my swim workout myself!
You are exactly right. I talked to my relatives in Mississippi right after Obama made his announcement and they said “we’re voting for him” – I asked if they wanted to see if they liked his speeches on the trail and they said “no, minds made up.” It’s easy to distort the voting in Mississippi because the AA population is much larger than the white. I was delighted with the turnout and the vote. By the way, I’m white and have many reasons to be proud of what they did.
actually, the media’s moved on to to five years of shock and awe: highlights of our embedding days
imo, changing the rules in mid-campaign is very very unfair.
The DNC & state committees botched this primary-scheduling gamesmanship something awful! There IS no truly reasonable and fair way out of the mess, as I see it. They’ll just have to muddle through, and change rules before the next election, hopefully having learned from this tangled web of misguided monkeybidness. They tried to play a dangerous game of “chicken” and everyone lost.
Obama dogs? knock it off Riesz, your better than that
ooooo, that sounds good
I’m sick of being required to condone murder and torture to be considered patriotic. I too would welcome a debate on what it means to be considered patriotic. Funny, it rhymes with idiotic.
well, it seems to me they shouldn’t be so anal about florida… florida got this because of Crisp and his republican cronies …
Let us strive to keep kitchen sinks where they rightfully belong.
Just ’sinking’ out loud, Riesz…
By Obama ‘dogs I meant Firepups for Obama– I didn’t mean it as an insult at all. Sorry for the confusion– I should have said “Obams Pups”.
it ends with tic … that’s telling
They should all mention Judy Miller prominently. While she took being embedded more literally than most, they are all her spiritual equals.

Obama and race: Candidate must confront audacity of hate
thanks for the feedback from Ohio. Any Pa folks out there? RevDeb?
Coverage on Larry King last night.
LOL !
Cheney, McCan’t and Loverman are hoping to do an insider deal over the biggest issue besides the economy that could derail the GOP’s continued hold over the presidency – Iraq. I don’t think they have a chance, but I think they’re playing the only game they know how to play.
Obama has upped the game several levels. Let’s see who can play at his level.
and dont forget point out where the troops are Geraldo from his Faux Bunker
It is past time for some very serious ‘tic talk.
Misogynistic? Anachronistic? Subject to have a tic? Are we discussing Senator McCain?
When the question my patriotism (by saying things like “the blame America first crowd” I call them on it, and I point out that Benedict Ronald Reagan, their hero, sold Hawk missiles and Tow missiles to the terrorists.
So do well educated DFHs.
See how good I am being today, I waited for your response before I attacked. . .the message of course!
@yup … he’s got plenty of tics….jerk jerk jerk
Understood.
No kitchen sink crap anymore, it’s old, it’s negative and it only gives the repugs ammo on whoever wins the nomination. I understand that there are folks that don’t like her and folks that don’t like him. Fine, but it doesn’t move the discourse forward to have arguments or conversations that aren’t based on the discussion of issues, policies, etc. rather than personal grudges (IMHO)
‘preciate that!
I had a softball team in a league I ran that was named Nine Jerks and a Squirt!
Don’t get me wrong. I’m utterly furious about this. Millions of voters are being disenfranchised by this bungled power-struggle.
Help me here, please. Who’s “Crisp”? I expect to feel like an idiot when you tell me, but fire away. :-P

re: re-dos. It seems to me that the only fair thing is to follow through on the rules as they were written before the primaries got going, before the game began. Before players started scoring, fouling, rebounding, etc.
I really don’t know how I would feel if I lived in MI or FL, but the most valid outcome for ALL candidates is to follow through on the rules. The current result in MI was not valid. Think of how Edwards must feel about a redo now. If they were going to allow a primary then all candidates should have been considered at the first primary. The ship has sailed.
The most valid result is to stick with the rules as they were written before the game started, as they applied to all parties involved. IMHO.
Governor of Florida
I think both Obama and Clinton have been critical of this but I would like a simple unequivocal statement by them saying that they will honor an agreement only if it has received Congressional approval.
From the New Orleans Times Picayune:
“In a region sharply divided along racial lines, New Orleans area political figures gave a mix of positive and guarded responses Tuesday to Barack Obama’s attempt to quiet an uproar about racial rhetoric in the presidential campaign.
In some circles nationally, critics dismissed the speech by the senator from Illinois as a self-serving effort to distance himself from his longtime pastor’s comments about white people, Israel and America’s role in bringing terrorism upon itself. But a smattering of local leaders saw healing potential in Obama’s remarks. In a region sharply divided along racial lines, New Orleans area political figures gave a mix of positive and guarded responses Tuesday to Barack Obama’s attempt to quiet an uproar about racial rhetoric in the presidential campaign.

Good. thanks.
governor of florida
Is there an echo in here?
I sincerely believe in every vote counting so I am troubled by the entire FL MI mess. I would rejoice if the powers that be could find a sane and sensible way for re-dos.
Adie-if you’re still here, the bill that moved the FL primary was a Republican bill, passed by a Republican-dominated legislature, signed by a Republican governor. FL Dems had very little to say about it.
Well, that will certainly elevate the discussion.
that’s why i think National has a responsibility to pay for it for Florida, and once they set that precendece they can’t leave out michigan
dosido: You have a point, and in the same vein I would say we shouldn’t change the rules concerning super delegates.
sorry for my confusing double paste….
here’s the times picayune article again:

Governor Charlie Crist…
Scarecrow, more generally, it’s possible to zero in geographically using the Google News Advanced Search page.
I used:
but limited my retrieval to a specific state in the “News Source Location” delimiter field.
HTH.
IMO, the FL primary was fair-all candidates were on the ballot, and everybody did not campaign here equally. Maybe strip some delegates or something, but this was not the doing of the FL democrats! I can’t believe Dean can’t see that.
I would agree with one exception … a small island in the Mediterranean named Sardinia …
You’re right, sorry I didn’t say it very well.
I think a lot of us already understood that the only thing the private sector is really good at, is driving shareholder value. If it means driving the banking system off a cliff, well that’s someone one else’s problem.
I hang out at a football blog with some real hard core Republicans, guys who work in the mortgage business. Prior to Monday, they were still blaming everything on eff’n liberalz and still worshipped at the altar of Grover Norquist. Bear Stearns changed all that. Now, they want to (insert you favorite torture) Mozilo and the rest. They understand from the inside that the hedge funds and the investment banks need regulation.
I think that too, but I know the Obama campaign does not want to seat them … Dean will have gotten much heat from them …
Dan Abrams always seems to be admiring himself in a mirror, placed strategically near the Camera Lens …
Yes but to be fair, no dem voted against it because in that same bill was the legislation for paper receipts for the electronic voting machines so that there was some sort of insurance of the votes being recorded correctly. This is not to blame the dems but more so to show that they were stuck between a rock and a hard place.
Scarecrow, I should have been more specific, of course.
In the Akron paper, the only thing front page was excellent picture of Obama looking every inch leadership-material, and headline, “Barack Obama tries to move campaign ahead by facing issue of race head-on in major speech.” – all in bold type, above the fold ;->
Body of the article was on last page of 1st section – easy access, above fold, another good pic, flags & all. One couldn’t ask for more favorable coverage, yeehaw!
I must put in a vote for the very small, out-of-the-way island of Cedar Key, FL. Unbelievable seafood. The fishing boats dock right at the back door of the restaurants.
After seeing this speech, I doubt anything short of a coup or an assassination will prevent him from being the next President. The sincerity and heartfelt love for this country with all of its’ problems and potentials is obvious to any but the most cynical and bitter (especially the MSM). As he so deftly demonstrated, he is willing to actually talk about things in a meaningful way. And I agree with him that the majority of Americans are ready for this kind of dialog. Fox may have tried to completely dumb down the country, but that kind of junk food for the brain only goes so far. As long as he handles anything they throw at him with this kind of judo, there isn’t much the chattering class can do to even slow him down, much less stop him.
heh.. thanks…
I can’t go with that because Clinton had an advantage due to name recognition. No one really had heard of Barack Obama on the national level but Hillary? She has been a part of the national political discourse since Bill took office.
sorry, I forgot we are saving the world, my bad
Not to be too picky, but isn’t this a stupid observation?
Isn’t any speech a candidate gives gonna be ’self serving’?
It’s time to admit that progressives need to declare all out war on the traditional MSM. Their pundits, newsreaders, bloviators, sycophants and dipshits are illegitimate representatives of the 4th Estate. They are purveyors of propaganda and ignorance. Their pampered and priviledged position among the ruling elites are threatened by a Barak Obama. They will stop at nothing until that threat is eliminated. It’s time to recognize that the MSM has to be discredited, shamed and exposed in the public’s eye.
Yes. We were. And now we are being punished for it by our own party. Note to Howard Dean: a local Tampa poll two days ago showed 13% of democratic voters will protest vote for John McCain if some solution is not reached. I can’t believe Dean would rather FL Democrats vote for McCain.
I for one would feel more comfortable if you’d either rephrase, or altogether DROP your 1st sentence there. I’ve been thru the 60’s once. Memories have NOT faded and never will. The world as we knew it was crashing down around us, best leaders… *sniffle*
Seriously, just don’t go there in print. Don’t raise the issue publically. Everyone feels it too much as it is. We get your point. Please understand. thanks.
Watch who you are calling stupid
Wobblybits, that’s a good point. I hadn’t thought of that.
Frankly I am starting to be very worried. The press has returned to the outrage meme about Obama and his preacher, they are acting like reThug idiocy is just funny and nothing to worry about, it is the same story that helped destroy the democratic process in the last to presidential elections. We are paying attention and looking at primary sources so it seems obvious that Obama did something great yesterday and McBush is very very dangerous, but the press is playing it in just the opposite way. I am very worried about November.
What? You’ve got stock in the New Orleans Times-Picayune?
((((( VG )))))
Well said !
No but I likes Dakinikat ! :)
Channel that nervous energy into getting our dem candidate elected (if your leaning Obama or Hillary, volunteer) nothing comes from worrying but ulcers and gray hair
My criticism was with the article, certainly not Dakinikat.
Thank you for this beautiful comment!
And you should be worried. Barak Obama is the most dangerous man in America to those that benefit from the status quo i.e. corporations, traditional MSM, Republican Party, racists, religious right fanatics. IMO they will stop at nothing to derail his primary campaign and if nominated, the presidential campaign. To expect the MSM to “come to their senses” and cover a major campaign with the seriousness it deserves underestimates their hidden agenda.
Obama did not agree to a do-over with unknown components. He said he would have to see the legislation. That such legislation is not possible without Republican support is not Obama’s fault.
Sorry Scarecrow, I missed the evening news both locally and from Philadelphia. I should have recorded it.
No matter what happens in the primary, Obama’s unique background makes him the perfect person to finally drag us past what he termed the “original sin” that stains our Constitution and it’s repercussions.
It’s a speech that will be long remembered.
Today’s whole first hour of Morning Joe was devoted to Joe saying what a great speech it was, BUT did it sway any blue collar workers in Pennsylvania?—over and over and over. I am touched by his concern.
Let us pray that when Dems take over, they return all channels and networks to the old FCC Equal Time rules which might force all these pundit wannabees to become real journalists.
I think Cheney/Bush has given us enough of “all out war” – in the Middle East, on democracy here, on the environment, the middle class, the budget deficit, on rational regulation and “good government” (an oxymoron to ReichWingers who’ve never met a government handout they wouldn’t accept).
We could use a little honesty, intelligence, competence and roll-up your sleeves, “we’re in this togetherness”. That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be relentless in calling horse manure, manure.
Seattle Times Wednesday: Front Page; speech reprinted in full on Page 3; comments and reactions on Page 11.
Lead editorial’s concluding paragraph: “Far from Obama’s candidacy being hobbled by the controversy, the moment showed his courage and statesmanship, qualities that make him fit to lead the country.”
I would add only if it meets the new president’s priorities, is in the best interests of the United States, and in the case of any agreement beyond a routine “status of forces” agreement, approved by Congress.
If not, there may be a cost to disengage from a badly flawed “agreement”, but it would surely be less than the relentless damage the current administration leaves wherever it treads. Odds are that if the new president disengages from a flawed deal, they would reap praise domestically and internationally from all but the ReichWing.
I found the most telling media response was delivered by none other than Tucker, who kept sniping at Rev. Wright’s comment that the U.S. Gov’t devised AIDS to kill black people … which asserted Obama’s statement that the MSM does nothing more than take a soundbite out of context rather than delve more in depth into the issue and bring that to the viewer …
Oh and Cheney is a Dick !
Here is the speech Barack gave Wednesday morning on Iraq … Link
The first two videos are clear but thankfully the camera zoomed in on Obama for his phenomenal speech …
yeah tucker is an asshat
oh yeah and Cheney is a Dick
Correction: The first two videos are not clear …
The New York Times must have changed editorial writers this morning:
Every once in a while, they get it right … *g*
The Times’ Modo, briefly comes up and tries to breathe the same air as her editorial page colleague, but in the end can’t quite swallow it:

“Crazy-quilted DNA”? Would Ms. Dowd have us believe that red-headed Romanized Celts are pure as Irish whiskey, as peaceful as a dockers’ strike, and as level-headed as Ian Paisley?
He and his speech writers have crafted a fine speech that should be considered by people of all ethnicity, race, and religion, in spite of the circumstances under which it was delivered. In my mind, this is one of the greatest problems our nation faces, and it is one that legislation and regulation can not fix (cf., war, poverty, corruption, imperialism, economy, lack of health care, global warming, torture, etc.).
But, it fails as an explanation or excuse for his inaction and subsequent equivocations. On the other hand, it probably succeeded in calming his political waters.
For over a year, Barack Obama pretended to be absent during and, to some degree, ignorant of the vitriol being spewed in his church. The main objective of his speech was to quash the growing realization of his denials among his supporters and his detractors. I doubt that he discussed this with any members of his church’s clergy or congregation contemporaneous with the sermons.
For over a year, Barack Obama has hidden behind equivocation, pretense, excuse, and denial when confronted on many other personal and political issues. No pretty speeches will distract the audience from these.
I, a Hillary Clinton supporter, will vote for either of our nominated candidates.
Obama has made it clear it’s up to the state and the Democratic Party to decide how to vote, within the Democratic party’s well publicized rules.
How did you discern it was Obama who is blocking representation from your state?
crazy-quilted DNA?
Oh, you mean like mine — Angles, Saxons, Normans, Romans, Celtic, Picts, Scots, Danes, Vikings, and from any other sailor who came ashore in Britain in the last few thousand years…
I don’t know about your DNA, but mine’s as pure as the loins of Cromwell’s soldiers and Irish maids could make it. Well, plus whatever the cat dragged in after 1845-6. Sadly, I haven’t any Thomas Jefferson in me, at least that anybody admits to.
Who/is anyone fighting back againt the CR..tht Ingraham/Hannity are spouting about Obama? I haven’t heard any Rush, but H. is filth. They must really feel that need to fight hard to justify reaching so low…one would think.
Well, his family tree does have some tenuous connection to the Cheney family tree. That’s some crazy DNA!
two…perfict!
Even when she’s trying to make “nice” and write something constructive, MoDo can’t resist slipping a rotten olive into the martini.
I fail to see the courage in not disowning the angry rhetoric of a father figure (while figuratively shoving granny, the surrogate mother figure, off the bus by way of explanation). It seems to me that Mr. Obama is very conflicted with his inter-racial background and has sought a black father figure to replace the one that abandoned him as a child. Perhaps abandoning the Rev. Wright would be akin to losing his father all over again. None of this should matter except for in a political sense where he claims to be a race-transcendent figure, and where some of his key support comes from white males who can’t abide the thought of a woman President. Despite the MSM spin on his speech, I wonder if some of his independent base will slip away to McCain in the general election because of his mishandling of this controversy. The issue was not that racism exists in the US; it does. The issue was whether black racism and bigotry was somehow different from its white counterpart, and whether it could be mitigated someway. The issue also goes into his judgment and whether he truly transcends race as some have claimed. In addition, whether his initial response to deny hearing any controversial statements from his mentor of 20 years could be reconciled with his speech where he left that door open. Oldgold, dakinikat, I enjoy reading your wise comments here and they are a refreshing breath of skepticism.
Bottom Line…When he thought he might have a problem He lied…..” I never heard that type of language when I was in the Church”. now that he is busted well of course he heard that type of language in his church! I really don’t care about what Wright says he is a loony as far as I am concerned and if people want to go and hear a Looney preacher good luck to them. What this goes to is character and Obama when he had to tell the truth he didn’t and it started back when he nixed Wright out of the invocation the day Obama announced his candidacy for Presidnet. Even then he was aware of hatred that this man spewed and he didn’t want the White voters to hear it or see it so they kept it wrapped up for as long as possible then when it blew up Obama Lied about his experience with Rev Wright. And another thing is this, Obama took his children to this church and allowed the hatred of this man to be planted in their minds. The US government createed AIDS in order to kill black people? WHy would any one allow their children to listen to this crap. Not very hopeful in my opinion…..If as Obama says he wants to rise above this hatred why allow his children to be the next generation to believe this crap?
