Unsurprisingly, Vice President Imperator Cheney doesn't think that in a democratic republic, the people's consent is required to wage wars:
CHENEY: On the security front, I think there’s a general consensus that we’ve made major progress, that the surge has worked. That’s been a major success.
RADDATZ: Two-third of Americans say it’s not worth fighting.
CHENEY: So?
RADDATZ So? You don’t care what the American people think?
CHENEY: No. I think you cannot be blown off course by the fluctuations in the public opinion polls.
Look, St. McCain is totally on the same page -- they just don't give damn what you think about the war or anything else. The only way to stop them is to vote these authoritarian cultists and their corrupt party out of office.

The sentiment is mutual.
Mr Cheney, go fluctuate yourself.
true that
Truly amazing - we don’t need democracy - I’m in charge.
so, truth is irrelevant in the “real” world.
5 Years of War, 4,000 Dead and Hundreds of Lies
We would not have this problem if Cheney would follow his own advice and f**k himself instead of f**king the whole world.
Again with Cheney’s statement above, does anyone think he won’t try to attack Iran between now and the election?
Come outside and play, chicken.
He doesn’t care what the people think because he doesn’t have to get close enough to even see one.
The nice thing about Cheney is that he IS so f$%^@&! arrogant, so obviously evil, that the best the propaganda media can do is try to ignore him. A hypocrite on homosexuality? A criminal who burns records in his offices? A soulless warmonger who everyone knows is really running the show?
…next on Fox, a blond college girl falls overboard!
I hope Cheney suddenly develops a conscience and lives a very long time.
what does he mean exactly when he says “I think”
he doesn’t think, he is possibly a bigger moron the bush, for a man to look at the biggest monumental failure in the historty this country and actually say it is some kind of success is worse then moronic
he sounds like he has somehow mastered the english language but the man is an idiot
Cheney not only doesn’t care what the people who oppose his policies think, he doesn’t care what his supporters think, or what the world outside the U.S. thinks. Once you get over the reality thing the rest is easy; you can say or do anything you want. After all if your Cheney and it turns out that reality does bite you can be pretty sure it’ll bite somebody else.
And then have the Attorney General Edwards draw up charges against the whole f’in bunch… [edited by mod], but that’s a waste of time since we all know there isn’t a word of truth, not a letter, in any cell of their body. Soulless bastards.
[Mod Note; In the comments at Firedoglake, please do not suggest that acts of violence be carried out on others — including public officials. Thank you.]
intriguing concept.
it’s hard to imagine any opinion but his own would rule
Hah … that would be just desserts …
Reminds me of a cartoon but I don’t remember who the cartoonist is. The white house is surrounded by americans holding signs, one large one says “The Electorate” & the bubble from the wh says, “Who asked YOU?”.
That pretty much sums up the entire administration & the last 8 fubar years.
Let’s start a viral slogan … “Cheney is a Dick”
The next time he appears for a speech, the audience will begin chanting … *g*
Gotta go for now.
Thanks for the company, guys.
there’s somethin’ wrong about that pic with H I M S E L F flanked by all those flags. security fetish?
At least a few people are making a point today. I wish I could have been with them.
No kidding–you wouldn’t believe the entourage surrounding any Cheney who sallies forth from the Naval Observatory. When one or more does, I sit at the red light, a mile from my home, and count how many black Suburbans with tinted windows emerge. The average is fourteen, plus motorcycle cops and Secret Service.
No chance any of them will be accosted, say, in the check-out lane of the supermarket and shown a photograph of one of the 4,000+ U.S. dead…
“fluctuations” in the polls?? “Fluctuations”???
Mr. Veep, you’ve got long-term average support down in the gutter and all you see is the fluctuations about the mean???
Actually, if he meant that, it could by very revealing. Any psych person here who could comment on whether a hyper-authoritarian type like our Veep would fixate on the “instability” of the opposition, rather than the opposition itself? Or something like that …
Standard neocon doctrine is the “administration” of democracy by an elite
that is above the rabble… Cheney, McCain, Clinton, Lieberman all share
this same alien creed imported from Trotsky into american politics.
Jacob Heilbrunn makes clear the root of the neocon creed is ethnic
resentment of american society transmuted into a general attack upon
all things democratic in our form of government. Both major political
parties are infected and need to be reset to more traditional american
values. The neocons know this and will not go quietly, so some asses may
need kicking to get the job done.
I like that! Can you imagine the howling that goes on whenever he leaves the room on his mid-east trip? Can you imagine what they are saying in Arabic while he is in the room? It’s gotta be fun!
If Cheney developed a conscience, the remainder of his life would be very short.
McCain will have Cheney head up a committee
to find a quality candidate for VP slot.
After careful deliberation one is found.
McCain/Cheney 08
Cheney can smirk and say what he wants. His bank account keeps on growing. He’s untouchable thanks to Nancy and Harry. There’s nothing anyone can do and he knows it.
Thanks Blue Texan! Say, whatever happened to the guy charged with “harrassing” Cheney at a public event, who subpeona’d the VP to testify after all the security officers offered widely divergent stories of the incident?
*thought bubble*
((((( Loo Hoo )))))
“White Devil” is a fav ME phrase for Bush/Cheney …
O-man!
Translation: nothing to see here, move along, I’ve got things perfectly in control.
Cheney is a dick, indeed.
Bush/Cheney and the Neocons will do and say anything that makes them oodles of money …
How did MSNBC find a Black Pastor to denigrate Obama and Dems … he was on Abrams last night after KO …
Yeah, that is a funny word considering most people have hated the war for 3 years now.
I don’t know how you all stand on the “reporting” of Jason Leopold. He of the checkered past and promised Karl Rove indictments; however, his fact checking abilities seem to have been in relatively good order when reporting on Cheney four years ago:
http://www.commondreams.org/views04/0819-03.htm
If you consider Mr. Cheney’s personal goals might have amounted to no more than making a butt load of money for himself and his cronies, you’d have to say his war was a spectacular success.
Who cares who was on the self appointed Chihuahua of Justice’s show?
“The Verdict” shouldn’t last as long as “Tucker” if self-righteous opinion shows are on the outs.
Insider trading is perfectly acceptable when you are a Republic.
That was an interesting episode about Leopold. I’d decided that Rove was about to be indicted, someone told Leopold, then Rove testified again & it was averted. Am I right in remembering there was another Rove GJ appearance after Leopold’s false hope?
If you treat it like the repubs do their buget forecasts, out to infinity,it would be a fluctuation. History will vindicate them(right…).
Can you imagine what they are saying in Arabic while he is in the room? It’s gotta be fun!
No doubt the Saudi translator has been asked to memorize an English script …
There’s a very old, very racist joke about mathematics, fluctuations and a student of Asian heritage. It ends with the punchline:
Fluck you Americans, too.
I can’t help thinking of it when Cheney repeats fluctuations.
“…a nuclear-armed Iran would be very destabilizing for the entire area..” Oh, yeah, Dick? Like, the US’s invasion and occupation of Iraq has not be a destabilizing force for the entire area? This man is truly living in a world of his own construction.
If Cheney told the Senate, Leahy in particular, “F..k you” on the senate floor, can we expect him to say anything else to us? Ahhh, Criminal Cheney, may the boomerang you threw out to America and the world be returned to you in like force. Payback is a bitch!
What’s this thug still doing in that role? Get the creep out and send him to prison where he belongs.
I have to go meditate. Every time I read about or hear Cheney I need to cleanse my soul.
True nuff, I won’t be watching it again … I found it funny that Abrams just happened to have a Black Pastor who could go on and counter Obama/Wright …
At least one more as I recall. And there was also the mysterious “sealed” indictment of unnamed persons. I’m sure that was an interesting back room bartering session that the public will never really know the full deal on. Cheney’s Halliburton dealings, though, are a matter of public record. It never ceases to amaze me that the MSM can have so cavalier an attitude as to absolutely NOT report on them. I watch the corporate corruption of the Media on display daily and yet it still never ceases to amaze me. Whatayagonnado?
Yes the Chihuahua of Justice proves his show shall be fair and balanced with overtly opinionated holy folk. Weee!
What an incredible putz!
In the last thread I mentioned this passage from Bush’s speech today:
http://www.whitehouse.gov/news.....319-2.html
There I was pointing out that Bush is maintaining that if we leave Iraq both al Qaeda and Iran win even though this is mutually contradictory.
In this thread we are talking about Cheney and I would just mention here that last phrase “failure of resolve” is a pure Cheneyism and goes to show just how far the President is in the Vice President’s pocket.
I was emailing a list of friends with interesting news events back then, as I was spending more time on the news. Do I emailed the Leopold story, and the subject line of my retraction email was “Premature rejoyculation.”
Stopped the email list when events got repetitive and I was sending the same thing over & over again.
Like you, no matter how repetitive it gets (lies from Admin, media corruption, etc.), I still can’t believe it’s really happening. And happening with no one in charge doing anything about it. Just poor helpless jerks like us who hang out in lefty blogs.

I’m surprised pigs and dogs don’t also figure into those soubriquets! Too bad Dubhaltach is too busy to enlighten us further on the topic!

It’s about as far as Jerry Mahoney was in Paul Winchell’s pocket.
Pocket? Is _that_ what they’re calling it these days? /snark

Cheney
Since July 2004 the majority of Americans have felt that the war in Iraq was the wrong thing to do.
I would not call that a fluctuation in the public opinion.
Not too late to find a vigil in your area.
New Priorities Vigil
Light a candle and help us find peace
F**king the world is Cheney’s substitute for actual sex.
He should just give us all a break and expire by natural causes.
Nope. They’d put McCain in as VP and running as the man.
I hope this comment will pass mod scrutiny.
Back in the summer of 2001 my son & I were on visit to relative in Poland. They did not speak English, my cousin spoke German (in addition to Polich & Russian), and I speak a very little German. Their children (then ranging in age from 13-20) spoke English. So conversation was a strain because of the language barrier. As a result, we spent a lot of time talking to each other. We developed an “oh die already” list, since we’re much tooo civilized to wish harm befalll anyone. Cheney was on top of the list. At least on of the others (who shall not be named) has actaully died in the interim.
President Bush’s speech re-airs right now CSPAN 1
I thought it was unbelievable
vigil in your area can be as close as your own front window.
for those who have served and those who have fallen.
Never forget…never let such lies lead us again.
comment rejected due to the crude nature of what I was thinking about the sexless nature of shooter’s fuck.
Not a nice man in any language, apparently.
A tearless wake.
ecahn-if you’re still here-been wanting to ask-when you are crunching your economic numbers, how do you figure a war into it?
and left you a message at that other thread, not that important.
have appt, will check back later
Froomkin nails it, as usual. The real reason for Cheney’s visit to the Gulf:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/.....777_5.html
Hoe many PT boats did the Secret Service and SEALS have to requisition, at what cost, to keep our hero safe? When you laugh, the world laughs with you; when you fish while “Rome” burns, you fish alone.
For the VP’s travelling MASH unit, keeping Cheney alive would seem to violate their Hippocratic Oath, namely to “Never to do deliberate harm to anyone for anyone else’s interest”. Their work harms the interests of the rest of us.
Never forget…never let such lies lead us again.
Deserved to be repeated. Thanks PS
Maybe a bumper sticker.
Thanks, I have the email for the local vigil but my wife made plans for tonight that I can’t break. I’ll be with them in spirit.
Good work, Comrade Cheney! Less than 300 days more for you to help destroy the Republican brand and then you can return to the fold (secretly, of course). Yes, not long now before, with your help and that of your daughter, we can unleash our most ambitious plan yet on an unsuspecting American public: THE GODLESS ABORTIONIST GUN-FREE HOMOSEXUAL AGENDA (GAGHA)!!!! BWAHAHAHA!!!
Our thanks to you is eternal, oh humorless one. We would not have been so successful had you not been willing to infiltrate the ranks of the RIGHT-eous, get it? RIGHT - eous? No? You nearly gave it away when you blasted that old man in the face, but thankfully thinking critically is not a strong… oh this comment is going on waaaay too long. This is KAOS kommand, over and out.
Nice to know I’m on the same e-mail list. ;-)
We head to the Penn Street Bridge here in Reading (PA) at 4:30.
D made two signs:
1. Enough !
2. Bring Them Home
No, he’s a sociopath. He knows full well the harm he’s doing, but he doesn’t care. There is a big difference between that and idiocy.
Cheenee must be the antichrist.
Still haven’t figured out how to get to Froomkin without going thru’ multiple layers at the wapoo (which no doubt was their intent) so always appreciate it when pups provide an easy linky, if not in the body of the post.
I don’t crunch #s any more.
The main economics impact of the war would be the multiplier effect on the positive side, meaning that it provides revenues for arms manufacturers, which hire workers, etc.
The big negative is the higher price of oil. I think I’ve heard Stiglitz say on his $3trillion war book tour that he factors in only $2 per barrel as war related. He sez it’s extrememly conservative, but my guess is that something more like all the rise in the price is war related,* since you wouldn’t have secondary influences like speculation without the primary influence.
So if one crunched those numbers, the positive against the negative, assuming the bulk of the rise in the oil price is war related, my guess is that the war would be a net negative. But since I don’t crunch #s, I won’t hazard a guess as to how much.
There are secondary influences, such as the diversion of what might have been productively used resources, like reparing infrastructure or providing medical care for kids, to war instead. These are smaller, longer run problems that would be difficult to quantify.
*Some would argue that rising demand for oil from places like India & China are big contributing factors in the rising price of oil. But I’d note that was going on for a long time before the oil prices started to rise, but the higher demand was being met by higher supply at the lower prevailing price. But you can understand why there would be arguements about this kind of thing. If I were still workng, I’d be actually looking at charts of oil supply & demand & price, tracing what had happened pre- & post- war to try to quatify what part is related to war.
Cheney’s version of “supporting the troops” doesn’t seem to include exercising any oversight over defense contractors (or telecoms, or the executive branch), including electrical contractors. At least twelve deaths have been reported:
http://www.atrios.blogspot.com/ [emph added]
Apart from the needless family grief and loss of life, we lost a highly-trained member of the Special Forces. What’s the out-of-pocket cost to replace him? What missions will be delayed or less effective because he wasn’t available? Multiply that by dozens or hundreds or four thousand. Meanwhile, Cheney goes fishing in the Persian Gulf, in the middle of a war, but hopefully not near the spot where those British sailors were taken by the Iranians.
Perris, Cheney uses “I think” to create necessary wiggle room should he ever need to go back on this statement in the future. He’s done this over and over.
For instance when the Democrats do something he doesn’t like and a small minority squawk he can demand they pay attention to “a significant number of people who are adamantly against the Democrat Party’s actions as shown by the recent poll”. (Made up quote but pretty accurate regardless.
I think the WaPoo does that deliberately. They nearly canned him a few years back because Rove complained about the sharpness of his reporting on White House business. Thinking better of it, their “compromise” was to downgrade his work to an “opinion” column. They kept changing its prominence and the location of its link. A few months ago, they relegated him further.
Unwilling to register and allow the WaPoo to track what I read in their paper - which is now only Froomkin - I have to search for and click on “blog directory”, “opinion”, and “white house watch/froomkin”. I give up the opportunity to comment, but his message board was half-filled with komments from Karl’s kids, which made doing so pointless.
Oh, and what’s the pointless, added “wear and tear” on our troops who, even when in their own barracks, can’t take a shower without worrying about whether it will be their last?
In Cheney’s mind, he was elected twice to the office of vice president and that means he has the full approval of the american people.
And how much skill do you need to understand you have to properly insulate electrical wires near water?
I wonder if this was some of the unskilled “voluntary” labor force imported from Asia. Saves money for somebody anyway.
Looking back, it’s a shame Harry Whittington didn’t get off the first shot.
[Mod Note: FWIW, in the future, if your comments advocate violence against another person, they will not appear in the thread.]

thanks, i’ve been wanting to ask, thanks.
ABC News, doing their best to let Cheney off the hook, omits Big Dick’s big fat “No.”
Aren’t the editors nice?
I don’t know the buildings involved and whether they were built before or after our invasion, or whether they were afterwards inspected or modified for use by US personnel. Regardless, the potential and easily avoidable dangers involved in routine wiring would have been obvious to even a modestly qualified builder or building inspector.
Which strongly suggests that either the builder or its workforce was unqualified, or the work was not adequately inspected. (There’s no suggestion that the buildings were weakened by attacks and not subsequently inspected or repaired.) Conceivably, this could also be problem created or worsened by inadequate maintenance.
The predictability and obviousness of such problems — and that they were not spotted, or were spotted and intentionally ignored - says a lot about how systemic and widespread the problems are.
Taxpayers are still paying for these shoddy products, including a considerable profit for the contractors. The Democrats should make clear that this is NOT what an American considers “Supporting the Troops” or making valid use of taxpayer funds. And work to fix them regardless of who takes the White House. Wags compare Bush to a Roman emperor who obliviously allows the Vandals to sack Rome. I’d compare him to a Vandal.
In regards to Froomkin At the WaPo..Try Huffpost links at bottom right of their home page. Click on Froomkin and then save his column to “Favorites”. When finished with the column, simply delete.
Who said America is democratic? It is a capitalistic country. :p (at least as long as these bustards are in charge…)
Americans, it is now to throw away the fantasy - nobody appointed you as a police nation and you are far from a reasonable model - and start fighting for human rights and true freedom. Democrats seem to have a good plan…
One thing that is true is you are strong, darns strong, and have potential to be a terror that you say you are against… you are not, not yet, but the hidden intention behind this so-called war on terror, the intention becoming more and more obvious to the rest of the world, terrifies me.
And you’ve all just been added to the terrorist list, lol.
