I'm starting to allow myself to feel a teensy bit optimistic about November. Consider the week the Democrats have had, versus the week the Republicans have had.

Democrats:

  • House of Representatives stands firm, passes FISA amendment that excludes telecom immunity. House Democrats completely unmoved by Dubya's usual feet-stamping about how The Scary Terrorists would blow up our children the instant the Protect America Act expired.
  • Barack Obama delivers terrific speech about race relations in response to backlash over Reverend Wright's sermons.
  • Darcy Burner, Donna Edwards (who both need to be cloned a couple hundred times) and several other progressive House candidates, along with some ex-military/DoD honchos, unveil Responsible Plan To End The War In Iraq, which also emphasizes ending the war on the Constitution and the war on media independence.

Republicans:

  • Dubya rhapsodizes wistfully about how he's "envious" of our troops' "fantastic... exciting... romantic" experience in Afghanistan. Does not actually attempt to swap places with anyone.
  • Republican presidential nominee John McCain has to be reminded (by Joe Lieberman!) that Iran is actually not al Qaeda's good buddy (see video). Also insists that "the surge is working" and we should keep 145,000 troops in Iraq after Teh Surge is over and just kind of see how it goes.
  • Dick Cheney continues to insist that Saddam and al Qaeda were like this, and claims that the Pentagon report which conclusively debunked their connection actually proved it. Also claims that "the more that Iraqis have gotten to know Americans... the better they’ve felt about the United States of America." (Hooray for Stockholm Syndrome!)

Now really, which party looks like grown-ups trying to fix things, and which party looks like they're just trying to perpetuate a clearly disastrous status quo?

For all of the Democrats' foolish caving and infighting, the Republicans are grimly determined to cement their reputation as the party of corruption, death and failure. If the Democrats can't capitalize on that in November, then they will need to do some truly epic housecleaning and rethinking. Um... we'd be happy to help with that.
