Actually I lied, Mr. Gnome has gone to bed and I paused at the computer to say hi on my way to the kitchen and laundry room. Bucky says “woof!” I have to go put the chicken stock away before the buckmeister reaches into the stockpot and slurps it all out. He has been known to get food out of a large pot on the back of the stove without tipping over the pot. His brother steals food right out from under your nose and from the hands of small children. It is some weird gene. The females in the litter don’t do that.

Initial signs are pretty frightening…I think tomorrow is a lost cause, but Tuesday…interesting to see what happens. Bounce back, maybe not too bad, but a deflationary spiral? Very bad. I’m not an economist, but…damn, things don’t look good.

Not surprising, they’ve pretty much raided all the other money available to them. It’s the next logical step for them.

It’s worse than that. Empirical evidence shows that the poor buy latteery tickets, a bad bet, and the proceeds go to the upper middle classes which disprotionately attend state universities, the beneficiaires of lotteries in most states.

I’ve been thinking about Bush’s master plan for the second term: privatizing Social Security. Do you think the plan was to bubble-up our privatized contributions, just in time to pick up the housing bubble’s slack? Seems to me that would be happening about NOW, had Nancy Pelosi not saved our bacon.

And the housing bubble might have gone away, taken over by the SS bubble. Thus we wouldn’t be in the mess we are right now, and for the rest of Bush’s term.

Of course, all bubbles burst, but the housing bubble softened the fall from the dotcom bubble. Maybe the SS bubble would have done the same for the housing bubble.

Alert for all you cat people: On The Trail of the Cat, Scientists Find Surprises

If cat owners know anything about their pets, it’s how enigmatic the creatures can be. But scientists have begun to pull back the feline veil, using the latest molecular tools to get a peek at their origins.

“Cats are certainly more mysterious and complex than we would ever think,” said Leslie A. Lyons, who studies cat genetics at the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of California at Davis. “However, we’re starting to get their story.”

In one of the most comprehensive explorations of cats’ origins to date, Lyons and her colleagues spent about five years collecting feline DNA, poking behind the whiskers of more than 1,100 Persians, Siamese, street cats and household tabbies around the world to swab inside their mouths. The genetic samples came from 22 breeds of fancy cats, mostly in the United States, along with an assortment of feral and pet cats in Korea, China, Kenya, Israel, Turkey, Vietnam, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Tunisia, Egypt, Italy, Finland, Germany, the United States and Brazil.

By analyzing 39 genetic signposts in the samples, the researchers were able to investigate a variety of questions, including which breeds are most closely related and where they most likely originated.

The first thing the group did was confirm a report published last June in the journal Science that the domestication of cats about 10,000 years ago appeared to have occurred in an area known as the Fertile Crescent, which stretches from Turkey to northern Africa and to modern-day Iraq and Iran.

Funny but I hadn’t really put too much thought about it besides it sounding strange that they were bascially paying him in pounds instead of dollars but I just nodded my head like I understood his umpteenth time of explaining why it was a good thing. I used to buy the New York Times every Sunday as an intellectual treat with coffee. They are such whores now that there’s no point in paying $5 a Sunday to be lied to and non-informed. Bad product.

I meant to post this yesterday, but what’s one day? I went to my DFL senate district convention yesterday, and managed to get myself elected a state delegate for our state convention in June. My political interests have always lingered near the surface, but only in the last year or two would I say I have become “passionate”. The people here make me want to get involved and do the right thing.

I know it’s tough to ask for money…I do community fundraisers as some weird penance from another life…but I’ve learned that people need to be reminded on a regular basis, or have the donations setup as a normal, monthly payment.
So, I’ll either remember to send in next month’s stipend, without a reminder, or you’ll send out a reminder, or the powers that be will NOT trust my vigilance and just take it out of my account.
I recommend the latter….I know me.

I did send money snail mail the past 3 years. But the cost of checks vs card is pretty steep. The funds that go to the site are much smaller. I finally caved to the idea of Paypal surveillence because I’m not scared of them anymore. They are all around us. So be it.

Evening all – thanks for the motivating post Teddy – did the paypal thingy albeit modest but pledge more by Friday.

A long time ago I recall there were comments about creating an ebay auction to benefit fdl. Mention this because we have lots of cool stuff in storage we will happily donate from cool vintage concert posters to good jewelry, etc. etc.

As Suz will attest am not computer competent to offer to handle the ebay thingy but happy to encourage donations from friends and family.

I think you have an awesome idea here. What if we looked through our treasures and found one good one that we would donate ?
I have an antique South African necklace that needs to move back into the world, out of my jewelry box.
I could so get into this idea.
