This is a debate that we should have instead of whose preacher says what and the insignificant b.s. that the media feeds the public. Debate our policies: disarmament vs star wars, 720 U.S. bases around the world in Germany for 60+ years and Japan while cutting basis at home that hurt local econnomies. Do our troops make us safer in Korea and Japan and at what cost? What should our force structure be and what weapons systems will we need in the future? Cluster bomds, land mines , depleted uranium? Should foreign aid supply arms and munitions to fragile areas of the world and arm dictators that suppress their people? We need a strong military pressence in the world. We are ,after all, the world’s only super power but to what extent as in Iraq is our posture only inflaming the situation and making things worse ? Candidates need to answer these and other questions and the media should start asking them.

The equally deferential and corporatist English government (though nominally “socialist”, an appellation that would have Attlee, Benn and Wilson guffawing) recently took over a failed bank.

The principal difference is that when it did, it sacked the bank’s top management and determined shareholders’ investment to be worth nil. And is now attempting to re-organize it. The Fed’s bail out of Bearish Sterns leaves its top managers - and their bonuses - and shareholders still in place, with all the uptick from the Fed’s intervention, if any, going into their pockets.

Corporatefare 3.0, soon to be released at a bank near you. Discount coupons for taxpayers not allowed.

Also a partial repost but important enough to deserve another shot:

Three days’ worth of Iraq and Afghanistan veterans speaking out at the Winter Soldier 2008 conference are already archived and ready to stream or download from the KPFA site. So the table is set for us to help break big media’s boycott of the horrifying, necessary truth delivered by some great patriots. Editors, program managers, and news directors of commercial outlets throughout the country deserve a call or twenty urging them to cover and broadcast clips from this historic event.

“No more bailouts of insolvent banks. Govt take over sure, but bailout has too much moral hazard. What is to keep these jerks from doing this again in ten years?”

Actually, the Federal Reserve is currently setting condition so they can do it again in a couple of months!

“It isn’t a humane thing to say, but I wish that same feeling of terror on all the <strike>people</strike> animals who support the practice.”

If you are referring to non-human animals, you are unjustly maligning the animals. Nothing in the non-human world is as deeply evil as these people.

Having witnessed the implosion (and taking credit for it) and capitalist/authoritarian rebirth (and admired it) of the second-largest Communist country, the Soviet Union/Russia, the neocons needed another rhetorical “other” to replace “Communist”. An enemy more politically acceptable than “Jew” or “ni##er”, at least in name. Their leader not being good with words or normal thinking, they’ve settled on three, the better to give him a chance of getting one right: “Islam”, “Muslim”, and “Islamo-fascist”.

Hence, a leading Democratic contender for presidential nominee has to defend himself against the “slur” of being called “a Muslim”, but not apparently, Jew, Baptist, Methodist or Catholic. The president is content to call his war of choice a “crusade”, imagining himself in a Robin Hood movie and not the streets of Baghdad. His generals are rewarded for claiming that “Our god is better than theirs”, as if they were little boys in the alley claiming that it was their little yellow stream that sprayed the farthest along a dank brick wall.

The November election will be only a milestone on the journey to recovering our moral self-esteem. Mr. Bush may have stolen it, and may content himself playing the Hooverian fool in front of us, but we left the door open and unguarded. It’s time to reclaim the neighborhood Bush’s hoodlums have trashed. Not via a host of Charles Bronsons with magnums, but by turning on the street lamps, rolling up our sleeves and picking up the trash one piece at a time.

[Mod Note; edited to clear the filters.]

These are some of the reasons we think Senator Obama should be the next president. He’s smart, intelligent, knows the issues, inspirational, cool under pressure, and has presented aspects of leadership. And this man was a against the Iraq War from the git-go. And there are other reasons for moving Obama and his wife into the WH.

March 17-21: Sunshine Week (Hey, Prairie, you’re on!!)

During ‘Sunshine Week,’ which is this Monday through Friday, various civic, media and government accountability groups celebrate the March 16 birth date of President James Madison and his clear statement of the principle that a democracy cannot function if citizens do not have the means and take the opportunity to look at the records and data that document just what their government is doing.
